    Six-pack for Tuesday

Six top minor league prospects for Chicago White Sox.......

    6) Chris Getz, 2B-- it .289 with .382 OB% in AA LY, he split his college career between Wake Forest, Michigan. Pitched a little bit for Wolverines, will start season in AAA at 2B.

    5) Jose Martinez, OF-- At 6-5, 170, reminds some of younger Juan Gonzalez. Stole 12 bases in 14 tries last season.

    4) Jack Egbert, P-- 12-8, 3.06 in AA last year; batters hit .232 against him. Will be 25 in May, little old for prospect who has yet to reach AAA, but he will this season.

    3) Lance Broadway, P-- White Sox traded Garland to Angels, giving Broadway big chance to be #5 starter on South Side.

    2) Aaron Poreda, P-- Was 4-0, 1.17 in Pioneer League; hitters batted .181 against him. Pitched at U of San Francisco, got a cool $1.2M to sign with Pale Hose.

    1) Fautino de los Santos, P-- 13-8, 2.43 in two seasons in A ball; batters his .184 against him. Shows unusual poise.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) Best first-round conference tournament game for this week looks like Friday afternoon’s Bradley-Creighton game in MVC tourney in St Louis, rematch of Bluejays’ 111-110 double OT win Saturday. It’ll be third time teams played in last 15 days.

      12) In Tuesday’s Ohio Valley first round games, three of the matchups are rematches of games that took place Thursday, including Tennessee State-Morehead, where TSU lost after leading by 18 at the half.

      11) ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb is opinionated, he says what he thinks, which is what TV people should do. I’m sure he ruffles feathers, but wouldn’t you rather listen to him than someone who pats the same people on the back year after year? Gottlieb doesn’t seem to have an agenda, he just speaks his mind.

      10) Ben Roethlisberger cashed in with 8-year, $102M contract from Steelers; wonder if there are any no-motorcycle clauses in there? You would think there are, or should be.

      9) Seems to be mixed opinion on Jets signing Alan Faneca, the Steelers’ guard; lot of writers seem to think it is bad form to overpay for a guard, while others think Faneca lining up and blocking in between young lineman Ferguson and Mangold is going to give Gang Green a hell of a left side of the OL.

      8) Mets still own Scott Schoeneweis, their hideous lefty long reliever, $7.2M over next two years. Isn't this a great country?

      7) Speaking of the Mets, what if Carlos Delgado’s hip is really bad? They don’t have a viable option as everyday first sacker- they’d have to act quickly to fill that big gap.

      6) Tom Glavine has pinch-run four times in his career, pinch-hit twice, been in playoffs ten times, but has never once been on the disabled list. He's also back in Atlanta this season.

      5) If you're a lefty pitcher and Tampa Bay releases you, it might be time for a new career, but Casey Fossum found his way into Pittsburgh's camp, and is trying to win a job there. Pirates have added Fossum, Doug Mientkiewicz and Byung Hyung-Kim, as they steamroll towards a 16th straight losing season.

      4) Cleveland Browns are spending a lot in free agency, in part because they don’t have pick in the first three rounds of next month’s draft, so this is only way they can improve their team.

      3) One of the strangest things about teams trying to get an NCAA bid is that, once you beat a team, you root like hell for that team the rest of season. Baylor, for instance, beat Notre Dame, so they're going to benefit from how well Irish are doing this season. Notre Dame's success could get Baylor a bid.

      2) Underrated college hoop analyst Bob Wenzel was saying how he didn’t think moving 3-point line back nine inches next season will make much difference in the game; my hope is that it results in teams trying less 3’s—think it has become as big an unpredictable variable in games as turnovers are in the NFL.

      1) March Madness officially starts Tuesday, with conference tournaments in Horizon and Ohio Valley getting underway at campus sites. Most of big boys have their tournaments late next week. Excellent time of year.

                    Tuesday NHL Gameday

The battle of New York takes center stage on Tuesday night, with the Rangers playing host to the Islanders at Madison Square Garden. Here's a look in your NHL Gameday:

New York Islanders at New York Rangers, 7:00pm ET

The Islanders have lost four of their past five games, and they've had trouble putting the puck in the net over that span. New York fell 4-1 to the Flyers on Saturday, and they followed that up with a 1-0 loss to the Panthers on Sunday. Wade Dubielewicz filled in for Rick DiPietro on Sunday; the Isles' starting keeper was absent for personal reasons.

The Rangers moved up the Eastern Conference standings with a 5-4 win over the Flyers on Sunday afternoon. Brendan Shanahan scored the shootout winner for New York in that game, while Stephen Valiquette stopped 17 of 18 Philly shots after replacing an ineffective Henrik Lundqvist. The Rangers are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games.

Buffalo Sabres at Philadelphia Flyers, 7:00pm ET

Buffalo was all over the Predators 8-4 last Wednesday, but since then they've dropped back-to-back decisions to the Canadiens and Red Wings. Montreal knocked off their division rival 6-2 on Friday, while Detroit was good for a 4-2 victory on Sunday. Ryan Miller had 35 saves in the loss on Sunday, and Jason Pominville scored his 20th goal.

The Flyers had their three-game winning streak snapped with their loss to the Rangers on Sunday afternoon. Philadelphia had knocked off the Sabres, Senators, and Islanders in their previous three games. Jeff Carter had two goals for Philadelphia in their loss on Sunday, while Antero Niittymaki was yanked after allowing four goals on just 14 shots.

Chicago Blackhawks at Minnesota Wild, 8:00pm ET

The Blackhawks are coming off a 4-1 win over the Canucks on Sunday night, with leading Calder Trophy candidate Patrick Kane scoring twice and adding an assist in the contest. Chicago had been pounded 7-4 by the Stars in their previous game, but overall they have won four of their past six outings. The Hawks will meet Anaheim Wednesday.

The Wild continue to hold down top spot in the Northwest Division standings, and they picked up their third straight win by beating the Kings 2-1 on Sunday night. Marian Gaborik scored his 34th goal of the season for Minnesota in that victory, while Martin Skoula had the overtime winner. Niklas Backstrom had 27 saves in Sunday's contest.

Vancouver Canucks at Colorado Avalanche, 9:30pm ET

The Canucks have now lost their last three games in a row, although two of those results were overtime losses that at least allowed them to pick up some points in the tight Western Conference standings. Ryan Kesler had the lone Vancouver goal in their loss to Chicago on Sunday, and the Canucks managed only 10 shots in that contest.

Colorado has now won four of their past five games to get back into the Top 8 of the Western Conference standings. The Avalanche handily defeated the lowly Kings 5-2 on Saturday, but forwards Ryan Smyth and Marek Svatos both left the game with injuries. Colorado is also waiting for the debut of Peter Forsberg, which could happen Tuesday.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Toronto at Orlando (-8.5, 209)

Chris Bosh stole the show the last time these two clubs hooked up, dropping 40 points on 14-of-16 shooting from the floor to help the Raptors spank the Magic by 17 points. That won’t sit well with the Magic and this time the Raps won’t have Bosh to lean on. He’s out for about a week with a swollen knee. Toronto probably won’t shoot almost 59 percent like they did last time either.

Toronto has a lot of guys who can hit shots, but a lot depends on an inside scoring presence to open up those outside looks. Without Bosh, they don’t really have that - Orlando does.

Dwight Howard went for 37 points in Orlando’s latest losing effort against the Raps and has recorded six straight double-doubles including a 26-point, 22-rebound effort against the listless Knicks on Saturday.

Plus, if you’re in the market for look-ahead spots, Toronto might be thinking about tomorrow’s cupcake at Miami to end this mini road trip.

                      Pick: Magic

                      L.A. Lakers at Sacramento (+5 ½, 220)

It’s hard to go against the Lakers these days, especially when they’re favored by less than a touchdown. But they have dropped three of the last four against the number over a few hard-fought games. That slide likely ends tonight against a Sacramento club that had lost four straight before beating the Heat on Sunday.

The Lakers will be looking to make a statement here; they play Sacramento four times in L.A.’s last 22 games. L.A. has won and covered four of its last five meetings with the Kings.

"They're certainly a spoiler," Lakers coach Phil Jackson told the Los Angeles Times. "We are serious about how difficult it's going to be to go there and win."

In other news, Ron Artest was fined – again – for statements he made about Sacramento’s coaching staff following Sunday’s win over Miami.

                      Pick: Lakers

                      Charlotte at Minnesota (-5, 196)

Things are looking up for the Bobcats, at least for the time being.

Charlotte hung tough with Boston over the weekend in an eight-point loss as huge 18-point underdogs and then pounded the Raptors in the battle of the boards to score a 110-98 upset at home to Toronto.

The Bobcats outscored the Raps 32-0 on second-chance points in a win that makes them feel a whole lot better about themselves considering they pulled it off without Gerald Wallace.

But defense is still a concern for Charlotte. The Bobcats are allowing 109 points a game over their last five, playing over the total in each of those. Minnesota isn’t much better in its own end, allowing about 102 points over its last five.

                      Pick: Over
