    Tips and Trends
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers (ABC | 1 PM ET)
Ten days after making a blockbuster trade that drastically changed the look of both teams, the Cavaliers and Bulls will meet for the first time this season. Cavs star LeBron James is averaging 20 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists in five contests since the trade. James said he "is looking forward to this matchup." EDGE: CAVS
Chicago has become more of an up-tempo, fast-break team since the trade, but is not necessarily finding more success. The Bulls had allowed a modest 98 points per game prior to the trade, but have given up an average of 107 since. "We've lost are defensive edge," according to guard Kirk Hinrich. EDGE: CAVS
Bulls are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road games.
Cavs are 15-5 ATS in their last 20 games against the Central Division.
The home team is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)
The Lakers are 11-2 since acquiring Pau Gasol, and are now scoring an average of 109 points per game. The Dallas Mavericks are fresh off allowing 106 points to a lowly Sacramento Kings team on Friday night. EDGE: LAKERS
The Mavericks have also found success through trades, as they have won four of six since acquiring Jason Kidd. Kidd is fresh off a 21 point 11 rebound game against the Kings, and recorded a double-double while a member of the Nets last time against the Lakers. EDGE: MAVS
Lakers star Kobe Bryant is averaging 35 points in his last 12 games against the Mavs. In that stretch, he has four games with at least 40 points, including a 62-point performance. EDGE: LAKERS
Mavs are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Sunday games.
Lakers are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
The underdog is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics (6 PM ET)
The league-best Celtics are gunning for their fifth straight win and eighth in a row at home. Boston already hammered Atlanta 106-83 on Nov. 9. That game saw the big three Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce combine for 64 total points. EDGE: CELTICS
Hawks rookie Al Horford, has been solid all season, and is averaging 16 points with 13 rebounds in his last three games alone. It's been easier for Horford to make plays with Mike Bibby in the lineup. Bibby was acquired from Sacramento on Feb. 16, and has averaged 13 points and 7 assists in Atlanta. EDGE: HAWKS
Hawks are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 road games.
Celtics are 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 7-3 in the Celtics last 10 games against the Eastern Conference.

Denver Nuggets at Houston Rockets (ESPN | 8 PM ET)
The Denver Nuggets lost three straight games Feb. 22-25, but has bounced back with consecutive wins. Carmelo Anthony had 30 points, 14 rebounds and six assists in the team's 110-104 latest victory over the Clippers on Friday night. Allen Iverson is also hot of late averaging 30 points and shooting 53 percent from the field in his last five games. EDGE: NUGGETS
Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson combined for 73 points against the Rockets in the Nuggets 112-111 double-overtime win on Dec. 20. EDGE: NUGGETS
After blowing out weak opponents in their first two games without All-Star center Yao Ming to cap a 13-0 February, the Rockets face a tougher challenge here. However the Rockets are 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings against Denver, including a big 28 point win last time these teams met in Houston. EDGE: ROCKETS
Nuggets are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games.
Rockets are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 5-3 in the last 8 meetings.

Tennessee guard JaJuan Smith said the Vols have a good chance to grab revenge for that loss. "We've got to treat this like a championship." Tennessee will honor a face from its past before the game by retiring All-American Ernie Grunfeld's jersey as well. EDGE: TENNESSEE
Tennessee guard Chris Lofton always finds a way to shoot well against the Wildcats, including going 7-for-14 from the field with 22 points in the first matchup this year."This is a big game for me." EDGE: TENNESSEE

          NCAAB Gameday
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three big conference matchups hit the college hardwood on Sunday, as Kentucky faces No. 1 Tennessee in the SEC, No. 12 Indiana takes on No. 19 Michigan State in the Big Ten, and Villanova visits Louisville in the Big East.

          Kentucky at Tennessee (1)

The Wildcats stormed past Mississippi earlier this week 58-54 as a 4.5-point favorite. Joe Crawford and Patrick Patterson each netted 15 points for Kentucky, while Ramel Bradley chipped in with 14 points. The Wildcats were dealt a huge blow on Friday after it was confirmed that Patterson has a stress fracture in his left ankle and will miss the rest of the season.

The Volunteers lost their first game as the top-ranked school in the nation after falling to Vanderbilt 72-69 as a 2-point favorite on Tuesday. Chris Lofton led the Vols with 25 points, but Tyler Smith was the only other Tennessee played to score in double figures with 11 points and 15 rebounds. As a team the Volunteers shot only 32 percent in the loss.

Kentucky already has one upset win over Tennessee this season. The Wildcats defeated the Volunteers 72-66 as a 5.5-point underdog back in January. Patterson unleashed 20 points and eight rebounds for Kentucky, while Lofton led Tennessee with 22 points.

Indiana (12) at Michigan State (19)

The Hoosiers posted their fourth straight win on Tuesday after getting past Ohio State 72-69 as an 8-point favorite. Armon Bassett led Indiana with 23 points, and Eric Gordon started to find his shot again with 17 points. D.J. White just missed his usual double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Spartans are in danger of dropping out of the Top 25 after losing to Wisconsin 57-42 as a 6-point underdog on Thursday. Goran Suton led the Spartans with 14 points and 15 rebounds, while leading scorer Drew Neitzel failed to show up after scoring only three points on 1-of-10 shooting.

The Hoosiers and Spartans collided back in mid-February when Indiana defeated Michigan State 80-62 as a 4-point favorite. Gordon poured in 28 points for Indiana, while Neitzel led Michigan State with 21 points.

          Villanova at Louisville (13)

Villanova’s troubles in the Big East continued as they dropped to 7-8 in the conference after losing to Marquette 85-75 as a 1.5-point underdog on Monday. Scottie Reynolds led the Wildcats with 14 points and Dante Cunningham had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

The Cardinals are making a charge for the Big East title after winning their last eight games. Louisville defeated Notre Dame 90-85 as a 7.5-point favorite on Thursday night to climb up another rung in the Big East ladder. David Padgett scored 26 points for the Cardinals in the win, while Earl Clark chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds.

              Additional

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Arena Football 2008 Preview

The Arena Football League kicks off its 22nd season, and each of the 17 teams will have the same goal in mind…Reaching Arena Bowl XXII, scheduled for July 27th in New Orleans. San Jose returns as the defending champion, and is widely regarded as one of the favorites to return to the throne in 2008. Other top contenders figure to be Dallas, Chicago, and Georgia.

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Preseason AFL Power Poll

Parity in the Arena Football League is at an all-time high. Over the last 10 years there have been seven different ArenaBowl winners. In fact, no team has repeated as AFL champions since the Tampa Bay Storm won consecutive titles in 1995-96. The San Jose SaberCats, winners of three of the last six championships, have been the closest thing to a dynasty the League has seen in some time.

With 17 teams (two less than last season) vying for the title this year, every club has the talent to win it all. The key to a championship will be consistent play, good health and a little luck.

Last year in this preseason column, I was somehow able to predict the San Jose SaberCats (over the Georgia Force) in the ArenaBowl. Let’s see if I can make it two years in a row.

Power Poll Rankings (2007 records in parenthesis)

17- Cleveland Gladiators (2-14) – Moved from Las Vegas to Cleveland in off-season and will have a brand-new look in ’08...Will be much better this season but doesn’t have the depth of the top teams.

16- Columbus Destroyers (7-9) – A year removed from the ArenaBowl but will take a step back in ’08...Only nine players return from the National Conference championship team from last year...Looks like a rebuilding season for head coach Doug Kay and the Destroyers.

15- Arizona Rattlers (4-12) – New coach, new quarterback, new management...The Rattlers are hoping to turn things around in ’08 but face a tough schedule in the Western Division with the likes of San Jose, Los Angeles and Utah and non-conference battles with Georgia, Orlando and Dallas..

14- New Orleans VooDoo (5-11) – Losing free agent WR Derrick Lewis (torn ACL) in training camp is a huge blow for the VooDoo...Without a go-to receiver on offense and their top pass rusher on defense (traded Henry Taylor to New York), New Orleans doesn’t have the horses to cash their ticket in this race.

13- Grand Rapids Rampage (4-12) – New head coach Steve Thonn brings an offensive mind to Western Michigan but the Rampage lacks “big name” talent with the exception of DB Ahmad Hawkins...Will be better in ’08 but the key to the season will be how an inconsistent QB Adrian McPherson adapts to Thonn’s timing-based offense.

12- New York Dragons (5-11) – If QB Aaron Garcia can stay healthy the Dragons have a chance...New York must do a better job of protecting the passer (allowed 26 sacks last season) or it could be another long season on Long Island.

11- Utah Blaze (8-8) – Lost top WR Siaha Burley to Arizona but added a slew of top defenders in free agency, including pass rushers Dwayne Missouri and E.J Burt, and DB Reggie Doster...QB Joe Germaine will have to spread the ball around to a number of receivers and the secondary will have to make plays for Utah to compete with San Jose and Los Angeles in the West.

10- Colorado Crush (8-8) – Losing WR Damian Harrell to free agency hurts... Veteran QB John Dutton will have to step up his game along with young receivers Ben Nelson, Brad Pyatt and Willie Quinnie if Colorado wants to make any noise in the Central...If Dutton continues to turn the ball over (tied for AFL lead with 17 INTs in ’07) it could be a disappointing season in the Rockies.

9- Orlando Predators (8-8) – Despite losing WR Jimmy Fryzel (season-ending injury) and DL Greg White (signed with Tampa Bay Buccaneers), the Predators will be in the mix again in ’08...Jay Gruden is too good of a coach to let his team slip...QB Shane Stafford didn’t play up to expectations last year but should benefit from a full season with WR T.T. Toliver.

8- Los Angeles Avengers (9-7) – My pick for surprise team in ’08...Third-year QB Sonny Cumbie is a star in the making in head coach Ed Hodgkiss’ offensive system...The defensive line of Jason Stewart, Ken Jones and Josh Jefferies gives the Avengers one of the top pass rushing units in the League.

7- Kansas City Brigade (10-6) – Could be another sleeper team in ‘08....Coming off a solid 10-6 season a year ago and added quality players (DB Jerald Brown, WR Mike Horacek, DL Mike Sutton) on both sides of the ball...The key to the season will be the play of veteran QB John Fitzgerald, who was out of the AFL last season coaching in af2...If Fitzgerald can manage the game and play consistently, the Brigade will surprise some people this year.

6- Tampa Bay Storm (9-7) – Caught fire at the end of last season and returns all the key contributors on both sides of the ball...There are high expectations for second-year QB Brett Dietz, who will be surrounded by veteran receivers Terrill Shaw, Lawrence Samuels and David Saunders...

5- Georgia Force (14-2) – Will need to replace 67 touchdowns with the loss of receivers Chris Jackson and Derek Lee to free agency...Biggest loss could be offensive coordinator Steve Thonn (now head coach in Grand Rapids) but head coach Doug Plank is confident in WRs Troy Bergeron, Brent Holmes, Carl Morris and Jamin Elliot, along with new coordinator Jim Kubiak.

4- Philadelphia Soul (8-8) – The addition of free agent WR Chris Jackson gives the Soul the big-play threat they’ve been lacking...With QB Tony Graziani and Jackson, expectations are high in the city of Brotherly Love...The quarterback and receivers garner most of the headlines, but the key to Philadelphia’s success will be the likes of defensive linemen Gabe Nyenhuis and Bryan Save and the rest of the Soul’s defense.

3- Chicago Rush (12-4) – The Rush lost their top two offensive players during the off-season (QB Matt D’Orazio and WR Bobby Sippio) but didn’t miss a beat with the addition of free agents QB Sherdrick Bonner and WR Damian Harrell...The defense has been the heart and soul of the club for the last few seasons and should be among the League’s top units again this season.

2- Dallas Desperados (15-1) – Will come out with a chip on their shoulder after dominating the regular season the last two years (28-4 combined record) only to fall in the playoffs in back-to-back seasons...On offense, veteran QB Clint Dolezel returns the nucleus of his receiving corps, and an overachieving defense got even better with the addition of free agent DB DaShane Dennis.

1- San Jose SaberCats (13-3) – The SaberCats are the champs and will remain so until someone knocks them off...Has won three of the last six championships and will be in the mix every year as long as QB Mark Grieb, WR James Roe and DBs Clevan Thomas and Omarr Smith are on the roster...The receiving corps is getting a little older but Grieb is the most accurate passer to ever play the indoor game.

              Looking into the crystal ball...

              American Conference Playoff Teams
San Jose, Chicago, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Colorado, Utah

              National Conference Playoff Teams
Dallas, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Georgia, Orlando, New York

              American Conference Championship Game:
              San Jose over Kansas City

              National Conference Championship Game:
              Dallas over Philadelphia

              ArenaBowl XXII (New Orleans)

Dallas at Los Angeles (-5.5, 207.5)

These teams made two of the biggest trades of the season recently, with the Lakers picking up Pau Gasol and the Mavericks acquiring Jason Kidd. So far it looks like the Lakers may have done the better deal.

Los Angeles has won 11 of its last 12 games with Gasol in the lineup, including 10 straight. The 7-foot center is averaging 20.6 points per game since his arrival, and the Lakers have covered the spread in 10 of the games he has featured in.

Kidd, meanwhile, hasn't made quite as big of a splash. The formers Nets guard has played in five games for Dallas, and the Mavs have dropped two of them, winning the other three against struggling opponents. He is averaging just 8.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

                  Pick: Lakers

                  Atlanta at Boston (-11, 195)

The Celtics responded to their first three-game losing streak in the best possible fashion, by winning the next three consecutive games. That blip is now long forgotten and Boston is seemingly back in the swing of dominating its opponents.

It has faced Portland and the Clippers on the road and Cleveland at home in its last three, and beat them all by an average margin of 14.3 points. The win over the Cavs lifted the Celts to an NBA-best 24-4 at home, where they have covered the spread in 16 of their 28 games this season.

This will be the Celtics second time facing the Hawks this season, and if they play anywhere near as well as they did the first time they won't have any problems. They beat Atlanta 106-83 at home on Nov. 9, easily covering a 9.5-point spread.

                  Pick: Celtics

Portland at Golden State (-6, 211)

The loss of guard Brandon Roy cannot be overstated ahead of Portland's trip to Oakland. He leads the team in points (19.3), assists (5.7), and steals (1.1) this season, and the Blazers will struggle to score without him.

Roy has missed the last two games with an ankle sprain, and the Blazers scored just 82 and 83 points respectively in those game. They lost to the Lakers in the first, and then defeated the Clippers 82-80 in the second.

A road game against the Warriors is always a tough task, as several big teams have found out in recent weeks. They have beaten Seattle, Boston, Phoenix and Sacramento at the Oracle Arena, and are certainly capable of adding the Roy-less Blazers to that list.

                  Pick: Warriors

                    Vancouver at Chicago (+105, 5.5)

After two disappointing home losses, the Vancouver Canucks might welcome a trip to Chicago. The Canucks look to get back on track while trying to continue their recent success over the Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon.

Vancouver (32-22-10) opens a brief two-game trip after falling 3-2 in overtime to Columbus on Friday. The Canucks blew a 2-0 third-period lead, two nights after giving away a late 2-1 advantage in a 3-2 shootout loss to Northwest Division rival Colorado.

Vancouver has a good chance to rebound Sunday as it tries for a fifth straight victory over the Blackhawks (30-28-6) and sixth in a row in Chicago. The Canucks, who won 3-2 in a shootout at home over the Blackhawks on Feb. 10, are 7-0-1 at the United Center since a 3-2 loss on Dec. 17, 2002.

Though Chicago lost 7-4 at Dallas on Thursday, it has won three in row at home, recording shutouts in its last two. The Blackhawks finished 7-4-2 in February.

                    Pick: Canucks

                    Detroit at Buffalo (-115, 5.5)

This is just isn't right. The Detroit Red Wings have now lost 10 of their last 11 games, which is bad enough, but it's just not fair that Detroit economy, which is already decimated by the layoffs and cutbacks in the auto industry, is probably taking another hit from all the money lost by loyal backers of the Red Wings. Good thing the Pistons are winning.

The explanation is simple: without Lidstrom, Chelios, Rafalski, this just isn't the same team. They're still a good team, but they're seriously thin at the blue line right now. But so is Buffalo after they dealt their best defenseman, Brian Campbell, at the trade deadline. Not surprisingly, they've allowed 10 goals in two games without him.

                    Pick: Over
