National Basketball Association – Hot Lines

          NBA
          Hot Lines

          Thursday, February 21

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Thursday’s NBA picks
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Houston Rockets (-11, 188 ½)

These teams are polar opposites. The Heat have dropped nine straight contests and are 23.5 games off the pace at the bottom of the NBA Southeast, while Houston has won nine straight and is just four games back in the NBA Southwest.

There is also major disparity between how each team is doing against the spread. Miami has covered just twice on its current losing streak, while the Rockets have won against the spread in six of their last seven.

Houston has won and covered in two of its last three meetings against Miami and that trend is likely to continue when they meet on Thursday night.

          Pick: Miami

San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves (+8, 179)

The Spurs won six of nine games on a difficult road trip ahead of the All-Star break, so Thursday’s road game in Minnesota won’t be too daunting for them. It also helps that Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili are ripping it up at the moment.

San Antonio’s big two have averaged 46.8 points and 9.2 rebounds over the last five games, including a massive 46-point performance from Ginobili in the win over Cleveland before the All-Star break.

The last time these teams met, it was Ginobili who did most of the damage. He had 22 points, five rebounds and three assists in a 105-88 Spurs win on Jan. 12. That was San Antonio’s third straight victory over the Wolves and the sixth time in the last seven meetings it covered the spread against them.

          Pick: San Antonio

Seattle SuperSonics at Portland Trail Blazers (-7, 191)

The Sonics managed a home win against the Grizzlies in their first game after the break, despite persistent speculation about the future of the franchise and the absence of their star rookie.

Seattle has been rocked by rumors that the team could be moved to Oklahoma City in the coming months, something that’s bound to have an effect on the players. Meanwhile, one of their biggest stars, Kevin Durant, was sent home ahead of Tuesday’s game with a bout of the flu.

What all that means for Thursday’s clash in Portland is quite simple. Seattle is a franchise under pressure with a star player who is unlikely to be 100 percent, facing a team it has not won or covered against in its last two attempts.

          Pick: Portland

Ice picks: Today’s best NHL bets
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            San Jose vs. Philadelphia (-120, 5 ½)

There is a difference between when a team should be tired during a tough road trip and when they actually look tired. And if you’ve seen the Sharks the past few games, you know they fall into the latter category.

The Sharks play their fourth game in five nights tonight in what is the start of a nasty eight-game Eastern Conference road trip. The signs of fatigue are both visible on the ice and the boxscores.

San Jose is getting fewer odd-man rushes than the club is used to and a lack of backchecking has led to more than one opposition goal over the past three games. They have also lost the game after jumping out to a lead in all three of their games on this road trip, the worst of which was a 2-0 third-period collapse against the Islanders two games ago.

It didn’t help that the Sharks had to start this swing with a pair of matinee games on back-to-back days against the Rangers and Islanders, just to be sure their body clocks were good and screwed up from the three-hour time difference.

That makes it five losses in a row now for the struggling Sharks. Though the Flyers have dropped eight in a row, a physical attack against a tired club like this could be just what they need to snap out of the funk.

            Pick: Flyers -120

St. Louis vs. Los Angeles (-110, 5 ½)

Desperation is a good thing. Not Night at the Roxbury desperation. But the type of desperation that has you three points out of a playoff position with season’s end collapsing on you.

That’s the Blues right now. They’ve responded with four wins in their last five games, thanks to their most inspired play of the season.

Manny Legace is on fire between the pipes with only seven goals against over the last five games. Guys are blocking shots. Checks are getting finished. Even the St. Louis power play is clicking. The Blues no longer hold the distinction of worst power play team in the league after six goals on 13 PP efforts in their last two games.

So games like this are a must-win for the Blues. They can’t afford to lose against the worst team in the league if they hope to meet their goal of making the postseason.

            Pick: Blues -110
