    Six-pack for Thursday

Top six minor league prospects for Arizona Diamondbacks, who traded four of their top eight prospects to Oakland to get Dan Haren from the A's........

    1) Jarrod Parker, P-- Indiana high schooler has yet to pitch professionally, but he got a $2.1M bonus to sign.

    2) Max Scherzer, P-- Struck out 106 in 90 IP in Class A-AA a year ago; could get to majors quicker as a reliever.

    3) Gerardo Parra, OF-- Best pure hitter in Arizona minors; he has .333 BA in three years. Doesn't have so much power.

    4) Emilio Bonifacio, 2B-SS-- Hit .217 in 23 AB with big club last year; late bloomer who was in minors for six years.

    5) Reynaldo Navarro, SS-- Struggled in first minor league season; made 28 errors in Pioneer League, hitting just .250 with only six walks in 218 PA.

    6) Barry Enright, P-- Went 35-8 in three years at Pepperdine, then managed to throw only 15 innings while pitching for three different minor league teams, as Arizona didn't let him pitch much, after throwing 131 innings last spring.

      Thursday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts..........

      13) Of the 64 players at the World Match Play championships only 20 are American, although three of four top seeds are.

      12) Adam Scott was only #2 seed to survive the first day; this isn't like NCAA tournament, where 2-15 upsets are rare. Ernie Els was the only #1 seed who lost on Wednesday.

      11) If you like pro football, this is good week to have the NFL Network; they have lot of coverage from Scouting Combine in Indianapolis-- interesting to see what the prospects have to go through as they try and impress the NFL scouts.

      10) My godson Tom is in Dominican Republic this week, at a baseball tournament with his summer travel team, two weeks before his high school team starts practicing- their first game was against a Minnesota Twins developmental team, so team of 17-year olds was playing pro players who are lot older.

      9) Francisco Liriano was at the game, which didn't go well for Tom's team, understandably; Liriano is awaiting resolution of a visa problem, before he can report to spring training.

      8) Falcons cut 31-year old TE Alge Crumpler last week, and 11 other NFL teams jumped into the fray to try and sign him.

      7) Memphis-Tennessee game Saturday will be fifth-ever game pitting #1-#2 teams from same state; #2 team won first four.

      6) There is kid playing college ball at Tennessee-Martin who is third-leading scorer in country; Lester Hudson scored 36 at Vanderbilt, 35 on Memphis, 27 vs Mississippi State; he was a Memphis playground legend who, at age 24, finally found his way to the D-I level. Funny how the coach's career swings on whether the kid comes back for his senior year next season.

      5) If you were a Texas Rangers' fan, would you be confident in CJ Wilson as your closer? Nah, me either......

      4) A by-product of Shaq trade is emergence of DJ Strawberry as a contributor in the Suns' rotation. Former Maryland Terp and son of Darryl fits in well with what the Suns do.

      3) Sonics GM Sam Presti, who came to Seattle from the Spurs, helped his old team out by trading them Kurt Thomas at the trading deadline. Western teams have to react to Shaq going to Phoenix; they all need an extra interior defender now.

      2) Knicks had an overtime win in Washington Tuesday, then followed it up with a 124-84 disaster in Philly last night, which has been typical of the Thomas regime. Look at 76ers' roster; how do you lose to that team by 40 points?

      1) Indiana's recent win streak puts school in a tricky position, as far as the Kelvin Sampson situation; they want to maximize this season, since White/Gordon are both gone after the year but if they ever let Sampson finish the season, the NCAA will probably give them a worse penalty for the violations. Looks like he will be suspended now, then fired down the road.

          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Houston Rockets (TNT | 8 PM ET)

The last time Houston won 10 straight games, the team went on to win the NBA championship. That's exactly what the Rockets will be looking to do here against the Heat after winning 9 in a row and going 7-2 ATS during that stretch. However, only 3 of those wins have been decided by double digits. EDGE: ROCKETS
Miami is riding a 9-game losing streak and has gone 2-6-1 ATS during that skid. The Heat surprisingly closed as a 2-point road favorite at Chicago last Thursday only to lose, 99-92. EDGE: ROCKETS
Miami star Dwyane Wade has certainly picked up his play since Shawn Marion joined the lineup, averaging nearly 10 points more per game than in the previous 5 without him. Wade is averaging 26 points and 8.7 assists in those 3 games while Marion is averaging 20.3 points and 13 rebounds during that stretch. SLIGHT EDGE: HEAT
The Heat should also get a boost inside with the return of power forward Udonis Haslem, who has missed the last 8 games with a high ankle sprain. EDGE: HEAT
Heat are 18-43-2 ATS in their last 63 games overall.
Rockets are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 vs. Southeast Division.
Underdog is 19-4 ATS in the last 23 NBA on TNT games.
Underdog is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Houston's last 8 home games.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Houston's last 8 Thursday games.

San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves (8 PM ET)

San Antonio point guard Tony Parker is expected to return to action after missing the last 9 games with an ankle injury. “I think he’ll get some minutes in Minnesota,” Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said. “Not many, but he’ll play.” Parker has averaged 19 points and 8.5 assists in 2 games vs. Minnesota this season. EDGE: SPURS
Parker's status could be a key factor against the Timberwolves after Randy Foye made his first start of the season in Tuesday's 104-88 win over Philadelphia. Foye missed the first 3 months of the season with a knee injury but had 13 points and 5 assists against the 76ers after being paired with Sebastian Telfair in the starting backcourt. “They’ll determine that for me,” Minnesota head coach Randy Wittman said. “When you put new combos together, they’ll tell me how it’s working by how they play.” EDGE: TIMBERWOLVES
Spurs are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
Timberwolves are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 games vs. Southwest Division.
Timberwolves are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
Home team is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
The UNDER is 13-5 in San Antonio's last 18 road games.
The UNDER is 23-9 in San Antonio's last 32 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Minnesota's last 9 games overall.

Seattle SuperSonics at Portland Trail Blazers (TNT | 10:30 PM ET)

Seattle rookie phenom Kevin Durant is suffering from a bout with the flu and is listed as questionable for this game at Portland. Durant is averaging a team-high 19.4 points per game and missed Tuesday's 108-101 home win. EDGE: BLAZERS
Portland is suffering through its second 5-game losing streak of the season but has not dropped 6 straight since the end of the 2005-06 season. The Blazers are just 3-9 since winning 20 of 24, including a 13-game winning streak in December. They have won the last 2 meetings with Seattle both SU & ATS after dropping the previous 2 in the series. EDGE: BLAZERS
Trail Blazers are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games overall.
Trail Blazers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games vs. Northwest Division.
The UNDER is 10-3 in Seattle's last 13 road games.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Seattle's last 8 Thursday games.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Seattle's last 10 games overall.

Pittsburgh at Notre Dame (-5, no total)

Notre Dame (19-5 SU, 9-12 ATS) hasn't faced Pittsburgh since its 100-97 double-overtime road loss Jan. 4, 2006. The Panthers have won all five meetings since Jan. 12, 2004, including a pair of victories at the Joyce Center, but Notre Dame covered in three of those.

Pittsburgh (19-6 SU, 12-8 ATS), though, has never had to face Notre Dame's Luke Harangody. The sophomore forward leads the Big East with 20.4 points per game and is the conference's second-leading rebounder (10.3). Harangody scored only 10 points in Notre Dame's most recent game, a 71-68 victory at Rutgers on Sunday, but the Irish improved to 9-3 in the Big East, their best start since joining the conference in 1995-96.

Pittsburgh lost their last game to Marquette, but one bright spot in the defeat was the return of Levance Fields. The junior guard broke his foot in a loss to Dayton on Dec. 29 and missed the next 12 games. He had only four points in 20 minutes Friday, but was averaging 11.3 points and 5.2 assists before the injury.

                            Pick: Pitt

Oregon State at UCLA (-28, no total)

A solid defensive effort last time out in a 56-46 win as six-point faves over USC helped keep UCLA atop the Pac-10 standings. The sixth-ranked Bruins could be in for another strong performance Thursday when they host Oregon State, which hasn't won a conference game in almost a year. The Beavers are 4-8-1 ATS in Pac-10 play this season.

Even if the Bruins struggle on the offensive end Thursday, the Bruins - allowing 58.0 points per game - should be able to handle Oregon State (6-19, 0-13), which looks to avoid extending its school-record losing streak to 16 games.

While the Beavers have been solid defensively, they are averaging only 61 points per game, which won't get it done against UCLA. The pointspread in this game offers some hope for OSU, however, because they are 5-2 ATS as an underdog of 12.5 points or more and 1-0 ATS as an underdog of 20 or more points. The Beavers have not covered against UCLA in six straight games, including last year's 85-62 loss in Beaverton.

                            Pick: Oregon State

Duquesne at Xavier (-11, no total)

Josh Duncan hasn't even started a game for Xavier since December, but that hasn't stopped the 6-foot-9 senior from becoming perhaps the nation's hottest player while the Musketeers have won eight straight and burst into the nation's top 10. He was perfect from the floor in the Musketeers' last game on Monday as he scored 23 points in a win over Rhode Island.

Xavier (22-4, 10-1) has needed almost all of Duncan's shots to fall over the last few games. He made his final shot in a 76-72 win over St. Joseph's on Feb. 10, then went 7-of-7 from the field - 5-of-5 from 3-point range - as the Musketeers won 62-60 at Charlotte last Wednesday. Despite Duncan's efforts, Xavier has only covered the spread in one of its last five games.

They'll probably need plenty of scoring against Duquesne, which has eight players averaging at least seven points and the team scored 100 or more twice during their recent three-game winning streak, which was snapped on Saturday in a 66-63 home loss to Richmond.

Duquesne has lost 21 straight games against ranked teams since winning 78-70 at then-No. 16 Xavier on Jan. 25, 1997. The Dukes also upset Xavier in a high-scoring affair last season, winning 93-91 at home on Jan. 31, 2007, to snap a three-game losing streak against the Musketeers.

                            Pick: Duquesne
