Six-pack for Monday

Top six fantasy outfielders:

6) Carl Crawford-- Is especially valuable in leagues that use stolen bases as category; should hit more home runs.

5) Magglio Ordonez-- .434 OB% LY, with 117 runs, 139 RBI, and thats playing in pitcher's ballpark.

4) Grady Sizemore-- OB% went up LY, but his extra bases power dipped LY, down from 53 doubles, 11 triples to 34-5.

3) Matt Holliday-- 70 HR, 251 RBI last two years, but if you only watch games on ESPN, you had never seen him play, until the playoffs last season.

2) Alfonso Soriano-- Red-hot September made up for year that was disappointing, but that happens a lot when guys are in first year of big contract. Was 40-40 guy in 2006.

1) Vladimir Guerrero-- Has OB% of .382/.403 last two years, but he swings at anything. Fun to watch, for sure.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

13) Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it. Why in the name of Lloyd Carr is LSU playing Appalachian State in football next August? How is that a good idea?

12) ASU is a I-AA team that won at Michigan last year; they are good, so why not play some crummy Sun Belt team that could use the money, and provide less resistance? Couldn't that financially strapped schools in Louisiana (La Tech, or UL-Lafayette, or UL-Monroe) use a big paycheck?

11) The BCS folks could put a quick end to this by declaring that any game against a I-AA opponent would count same as a loss vs a I-A team. Then we'd see some better scheduling.

10) For example, Hawai'i had to play two games against I-AA teams in '07, because they couldn't get any I-A teams to play against them; the gutless bastards didn't want to risk losing to a WAC team. Who doesn't want to go to Hawai'i? Geez.......

9) Looks like ESPN fired Suzy Kolber and Michelle Tafoya in a shakeup of their Monday Night Football crew; amazingly, the annoying Tony Kornheiser keeps his job. He's going to be added to the Matt Millen/Isiah Thomas plateau of people who stay employed, despite being terrible at their jobs.

8) Underrated stat from '07 baseball season: at age 35, Jorge Posada had an on-base percentage of .426, for a catcher who is in his mid-30's, thats a an incredibly good season.

7) Bought my first baseball magazine of the season last week; here are first six guys taken in a Seattle-area fantasy draft, not a keeper league. Interesting how people think: 1) ARodriguez 2) Pujols 3) HRamirez 4) Holliday 5) Fielder and 6) Jose Reyes. No pitchers in the group.

6) NBA must be thrilled they scheduled the Heat on so many national TV games, although with the Marion-Wade-Wright nucleus, they run a lot now and are more fun to watch. Still, they've lost 22 of last 23 games, and are 9 and freakin' 40.

5) Imagine travelling with a 9-40 team and realizing that there is still more than thirty games to playin the season? There's always the Draft Lottery to look forward to.

4) Steve Lowery was ranked 305th in world golf rankings as he teed off Thursday; he is now 148th after winning for first time in seven years, beating Vijay Singh in a playoff. Lowery hadn't won in seven years, now has three career wins, all of which came in playoffs.

3) High drama in Chapel Hill, as Clemson led by 15, then by 11 at the half, as they tried to end an 0-52 skid at North Carolina. Sadly, Heels won in double OT, extending the Tigers' misery. Thats right, Clemson has never won in Chapel Hill (0-53).

2) Free throw stats for the game: Clemson 1-7, UNC 31-36, in a game Heels never led until overtime. It is easy to say Tigers got hosed, but if they make the seven they took, they still win the game, so they're to blame there, too.

1) Clemson lost in OT to North Carolina at home, too; will be interesting to see how Coach Purnell gets his team to recover after what had to be a traumatic loss. Tigers shoot the 3 well, but are horrible at the foul line, but they're a formidable team.
