Although my avatar suggests otherwise, I'm a big TB fan. If anyone cares to read along, here's my take on today's game.
As a TB fan, 3 things scare me in this game:
1) NY's ability to run the ball especially considering they have a "bruiser" type back in Jacobs. I know TB's defensive numbers are good statistically, but they rank 17th against the run giving up 107.9 yds/game rushing. At the same time, the Giants are ranked 4th in the league running the ball gaining 134.2 yds/game. If TB can keep the Giants in between those numbers on the ground, I think they win this game. That being said, I don't see them doing it. Even though TB defenses have been great for the past 10 years or so, they've always been susceptible to the run due to the fact that their defense is built on speed and quickness which lends itself to smaller guys that wear down in the 4th qtr. Given any sort of lead in the 2nd half, NY will pound, pound, pound.
2) The Giants led the league in sacks with 53 + the fact that TB's o-line is young and nothing to write home about = Jeff Garcia running for his life all day.
3) This one involves my knock on Gruden for the past few years, and until it gets better, I can't back this guy. TB is 26th in the league at converting red zone drives into TDs. They were in the RZ 46 times this season, AND ONLY SCORED 20 TDs for a terrible 44%. I kept saying all year long that if this team makes the playoffs, this would ineptness in the RZ would haunt them. I don't see how a season-long trend gets corrected in 1 week so I look for this to continue.
As a TB fan, 1 thing makes me feel good about today's game:
1) ELI MANNING IS THE GIANTS QB. UNTIL HE PROVES TO ME THAT HE CAN PERFORM WELL IN THE PLAYOFFS, I STILL PUT HIM IN THE SAME CATEGORY AS REX GROSSMAN.
All in all, I refuse to bet against my favorite team in the playoffs, BUT IF I WAS TO WAGER ON THIS GAME, I WOULD HAVE TO GO WITH NY +3. A few weeks ago I was hoping for this match-up because I thought the Bucs D would eat up Eli, but the more I looked at this game, the 1st 3 pts above stuck out like a sore thumb. Take this for what it's worth cuz I'm not "touching" this game. I will be there in person to cheer on TB, and I hope they can overcome the weaknesses I stated above.
GL everyone and GO BUCS!
