What bettors need to know: Ball State vs. Rutgers
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Ball State at Rutgers (-10 ½, 61)

    Teel time

Rutgers quarterback Mike Teel won’t need to fabricate any enthusiasm for playing in Saturday’s International Bowl.

“This will probably be the healthiest I've been since the second game of the year,” Teel told reporters. “I'm excited at the opportunity.”

Teel injured his throwing hand in the first month of the campaign and spent the next two months struggling to restore the strength in his arm.

“There were times I did nothing because I couldn't,” Teel told reporters. “Obviously it affects anyone, even the best quarterbacks in the NFL, to not get the reps. You get the mental reps because you see it, but that's not the same as going out there and going through it. You need to see everything, you need to get your checks, get guys in the right spots at the right times.”

Rutgers, though, isn’t scoffing at Saturday’s meeting with the Ball State Cardinals.

“All the stuff about, 'We could be here, we should be there,' it is what it is,” Teel continued. “It's a great opportunity for me to have a chance to play healthy again, and it gives us the opportunity to get all the young guys an extra 15 or so practices so they can really elevate themselves and really learn the game.”

Teel finished the regular season with 2,844 passing yards with 17 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.

    Britt hurting

Rutgers standout receiver Kenny Britt had his knee scoped at the end of the regular season after injuring it against Louisville.

Britt is probable for the International Bowl.

Doctors initially told Rutgers that it could be without Britt versus Ball State. However, the star receiver said he has healed ahead of schedule.

“I was walking a week before I was supposed to walk and running a week before I was supposed to run,” Britt told the Newark Star-Ledger.

Rutgers quarterback Teel is especially interested in Britt’s status for Saturday.

“I thought he ran around pretty well,” Teel told reporters. “He did more than I thought he would. He's a pretty quick healer.”

Britt accumulated more than 1,100 receiving yards this season. He also led the Scarlet Knights with seven touchdown receptions.

    Rizzi sighting

Scarlet Knights associate head coach Darren Rizzi, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Rhode Island, will remain with Rutgers through Saturday.

Head coach Greg Schiano thinks Rizzi’s participation is important for the Scarlet Knights’ bowl preparation.

“He’s still working really hard with the special teams and defense as well,” Schiano told reporters.

Under coach Rizzi, the Scarlet Knights defense blossomed. Last season Rutgers finished fourth in total defense and fifth in tackles for a loss and sacks.

“I am very happy for Darren and his family,” Schiano continued. “He has done a great job here at Rutgers and I know that he will do a great job as the head football coach at the University of Rhode Island. We will miss him but are very happy for him and his family.”

    Cardinals fly North

Ball State will play its first bowl game in 11 years on Saturday.

Cardinals safety Eddie Burk, though, is treating the International Bowl like a BCS Championship.

“It will be exciting to go to a bowl, and finding out we play Rutgers makes me even more excited to win the game,” Ball State safety Eddie Burk told the Indiana Star-Press. “We're not just going to be satisfied to go to the game. We're going to Toronto to win. It's going to be fun.”

Ball State head coach Brady Hoke thinks his team can compete with the experienced Scarlet Knights.

“It will be interesting to see how these guys respond,” Hoke said. “I like where their attitude has been, and I like how they feel about having the opportunity to play. Their demeanor will be based on my demeanor.”

Ball State, 7-5 straight up (SU) and 7-4 against the spread (ATS), put together its first successful season since finishing 8-4 SU in 1996.

GMAC Bowl preview: Bowling Green vs Tulsa
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Sunday, January 6

      GMAC Bowl
Teams: Bowling Green Falcons vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane
      Date: Sunday, Jan. 6, 8 p.m. ET
      Location: Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Mobile, Alabama
      Line: Tulsa -4, Total 75 ½ points

If the Rose Bowl is the granddaddy of them all, the GMAC Bowl is probably more like the illegitimate half-brother.

Nonetheless, it will be the opening act for the BCS Championship game, taking the prime time slot on Jan. 6, the night before the big game.

There are no big-time programs involved, but for those who like offense, this one will probably be a crowd pleaser. The Tulsa Golden Hurricane and Bowling Green Falcons are two teams that play full-throttle, all-out, shock-and-awe offense. That’s what happens when your defense is terrible.

That’s why this game has the highest over/under of all the bowl games at a whopping 75 ½ points.

The biggest star of the game is Tulsa quarterback Paul Smith. With 4,753 passing yards and 42 TD tosses this season, Smith was second in the nation to only Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell in passing stats. Smith was the biggest reason the Hurricane put up nearly 40 points per game.

The Tulsa offense is a sight to behold when it really gets humming, like when they went four games in a row in which they scored at least 48 points. That included a 56-7 win over Houston, though most of their games were much closer.

Allowing 469 yards per game meant that Tulsa couldn’t put opponents away. It also meant they weren’t a good bet and only covered the spread in four of 13 games this year.

Bowling Green couldn’t be in a better position coming into this game. They are fresh off a four-game winning streak, including a 37-10 win over Toledo in the final game of the season.

Quarterback Tyler Sheehan didn’t get the kind of press that Smith got this year, but with more than 3,000 passing yards, he was among the best QBs in the country. He has a couple of good receivers in Freddie Barnes and Jermiah Kelly, and running back Anthony Turner is a threat to run, catch, and even throw the ball with 500 yards rushing, 152 receiving yards and three touchdown passes this year.

Unlike Tulsa, Bowling Green was able to cover the spread in their last four games because their defense finally got its act together. After allowing 34 points per game in the first eight games of the season, the Falcons tightened up and held opponents to an average of 20 points per game in the last four contests.

The scary thing for the Bowling Green defense is that they have struggled against strong passing teams. Their worst losses of the season came against Boston College and Miami-Ohio, which are the two best passing teams they saw this season. But even those teams can’t match Tulsa’s aerial attack, which racked up 375 yards per game and ranked third in the country.

This will be the third consecutive bowl game appearance for the Golden Hurricane and 15th overall. This game marks Bowling Green’s eighth bowl appearance. The Falcons defeated Memphis 52-35 in the 2004 GMAC Bowl.

        College Football – Report

        NCAAF

        For Monday’s game (January 7)

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reports: Two OSU cornerbacks suspended for title game
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        12-21-07

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Top-ranked Ohio State will be without two cornerbacks -- one a starter and the other a top reserve -- who have been suspended for the Allstate BCS Championship Game against LSU, according to media reports.

Donald Washington, a sophomore who has started every game this season for the Buckeyes (11-1, 7-4 ATS), and backup Eugene Clifford were suspended for violating team rules, WCMH-TV and The Columbus Dispatch reported Wednesday.

The Buckeyes are 4-point underdogs against the Tigers. The total is set at 49.

Athletic director Gene Smith declined Thursday to confirm the suspensions and said there was "work to be done" before he could confirm them.

Washington, in particular, played a key role in an Ohio State defense ranked among the best in the nation. He had 34 tackles, tied for seventh-best on the team with second-team All-American lineman Vernon Gholston, and also had two tackles for minus yardage, one sack, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Washington, 21, started at nickel back a year ago and moved into the starting spot at field corner this spring. In a 48-3 win over Kent State on Oct. 13, the Indianapolis native returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown and recorded his first career sack.

With him out of the lineup, redshirt freshman Chimdi Chekwa will most likely move into the starting position.

Clifford was a prized recruit last spring after receiving all-state and several national honors during his days at Colerain High School.

He was listed as Malcolm Jenkins' backup at border corner on the Buckeyes' latest two-deep chart.

Clifford had played in four games, totaling eight tackles.

The Buckeyes' final workout before the holidays was on Wednesday. They will be off until returning on Dec. 26, then will practice for a week before flying to New Orleans on Jan. 2.

Pick 'n' roll: Friday's best NBA bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Detroit at Toronto (+4, 187)

The Pistons are arguably the most talented team in the NBA.

Detroit has won 10 straight, including four in a row outside the Motor City.

The Pistons outscored their last four road opponents by an average of 10 points and are 4-0 against the spread (ATS) over that stretch.

Toronto has lost four of its last six and is 2-4 ATS in that span.

              Pick: Pistons -4

              Houston at Orlando (-4 1/2, 192)

The Magic are 2-5 both ATS and straight up (SU) in their last seven home games, including Wednesday’s setback to the Nets.

Houston center Yao Ming, averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds, accumulated 19 points and 17 rebounds in last month’s five-point loss to Orlando.

The Rockets are also an impressive 9-2 ATS in their last 11 tilts with Orlando.

              Pick: Rockets +4 1/2

              Atlanta at Indiana (-2 1/2, 192 1/2)

The Hawks have been soaring in the East recently.

Atlanta has won four of its last five against the Eastern Conference, including last Wednesday’s triumph over the Pacers.

Hawks leading scorer Joe Johnson, averaging 22 points, registered a team-high 26 points and 11 assists against the Indiana. Josh Smith chipped in with 16 points.

The Hawks are 5-0 ATS in their last five versus the East.

              Pick: Hawks +2 1/2

              Memphis at Boston (-13, 197)

The Celtics are a league-leading 15-1 SU and 11-5 ATS at home.

Boston has won nine of its last 10 and is 7-3 ATS in that stretch. It is also 9-0 SU against the Western Conference.

The Celtics outlasted Houston on Wednesday thanks to five players scoring in double figures. That included a game-high 26 points from Kevin Garnett.

Memphis, meanwhile, is 2-5 ATS in its last seven versus the Eastern Conference.

              Pick: Celtics -13

              Charlotte at New Jersey (-6 1/2, 192 1/2)

The road team has dominated this matchup recently, winning eight of the last 10 meetings. It is also a remarkable 8-2 ATS in that stretch.

That does not bode well for the Nets, who are a dismal 4-13-1 ATS in the Swamp. They are also a shaky 2-4 ATS in their last six at the Izod Center.

Charlotte, though, is 4-2 ATS in its last six meetings with the Nets.

              Pick: Bobcats +6 1/2

              Sacramento at Cleveland (-8, 193)

Sacramento lost to the Cavaliers 93-91 on Nov. 9 at Arco Arena. Bettors should expect a different outcome on Friday.

Cleveland is 3-7 ATS in its last 10, including Wednesday’s victory over the Hawks. It is 2-4 ATS in its last six in the Forest City.

The Kings have covered the spread in two of their last three trips to Ohio.

              Pick: Kings +8

              Denver at Minnesota (+6 1/2, 208)

              Don’t underestimate the rebuilding Timberwolves.

Minnesota forward Al Jefferson is averaging career-highs in points (20) and rebounds (12). Former second round pick Craig Smith is also having a strong sophomore season, averaging 11 points and four rebounds.

The Timberwolves covered the spread as 14-point road underdogs in their first meeting with Denver. ****** tallied 15 points and 14 rebounds in the triumph.

Minnesota is 2-0 ATS in two meetings this season with the Nuggets.

              Pick: Timberwolves -6 1/2

              Washington at Milwaukee (off)

The Wizards are 3-1 ATS in their last four outside D.C.

Washington veteran Caron Butler accumulated 72 points and 23 rebounds in his last three road games. Butler is shooting a career-high 49 percent from the field.

Wizards point guard Antonio Daniels, who missed the last seven contests with a sore knee, returned to the lineup on Wednesday. Daniels scored 18 points in a 106-93 setback to the surging Pistons.

Washington is 5-2 ATS in its last seven visits to Wisconsin.

              Pick: Wizards

              New York at San Antonio (-12 1/2, 186 1/2)

New York has lost nine of its last 10, including Wednesday’s 10-point setback to the shorthanded Kings.

The Knicks are also a miserable 1-11 SU outside MSG. San Antonio, on the other hand, is 13-2 SU and 11-6-1 ATS at home.

Spurs reserve Manu Ginobili, out three straight with a sprained finger, will also likely suit up against the Knicks. Ginobili is averaging 19 points and four rebounds.

              Pick: Spurs -12 1/2

              Miami at Dallas (off)

Miami is a respectable 9-8 ATS outside South Beach.

However, with center Shaquille O’Neal and guard Jason Williams sidelined with injuries, it’s unlikely that the Heat can compete with the surging Mavericks.

Dallas is 7-3 SU in its last 10 and has won two straight over the Heat going back to last January.

              Pick: Mavericks

              Philadelphia at L.A. Lakers (-7, 199 1/2)

Philadelphia native Kobe Bryant loves playing the 76ers.

Bryant has averaged 35 points in his last four meetings with the Sixers. He also ranks second in the league in scoring, averaging 27 points.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, has struggled against the Lakers. It is 1-4 both SU and ATS in its last five visits to L.A. dating back to 2003.

              Pick: Lakers -7

New Orleans at Golden State (-3 1/2, 206)

The Hornets love road trips. They are 12-5 SU and 11-5-1 ATS outside the Big Easy.

New Orleans has won four of its last five road outings, outscoring its last two road opponents by a combined 28 points.

Golden State, meanwhile, is 2-5 ATS in its last seven outside Oakland.

              Pick: Warriors -3 1/2
