Pick 'n' roll: Monday's best NBA bets
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Indiana at Charlotte (-1, 204 ½)

It could be a long seven days for the Pacers.

Indiana starting point guard Jamaal Tinsley is expected to miss at least a week with a hamstring injury, and that spells trouble for the team.

It is already on a three-game losing streak after Saturday’s 98-92 loss to Detroit, in which its offense looked lost. The Pacers managed just 41 second-half points without Tinlsey, who is averaging 13.8 points, 8.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game this season.

Charlotte has already won and covered the spread at home to Indiana this season, and should repeat that feat against a Pacers team without its top point guard.

      Pick: Bobcats -1

      Orlando at Chicago (+2 ½, 199 ½)

What a difference a coach makes. The Bulls were on a three-game losing streak before Jim Boylan took over last week. Now they have won two straight. They also broke the 100-point mark in both games, something they managed only six times under former coach Scott Skiles.

"I think everybody is playing more relaxed," guard Ben Gordon told the Associated Press. "We are trying to play together more and guys are moving the ball."

Gordon had a team-high 25 points in last night’s win over New York.

Orlando travels to the United Center riding a three-game winning streak, but the Bulls are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 against the Magic.

      Pick: Bulls +2 ½

      Milwaukee at Detroit (-11 ½, 190 ½)

The Pistons are on an eight-game winning streak and will try to continue their dominance over the Bucks tonight.

Detroit has won four straight games and nine of the last eleven against Milwaukee, covering the spread in the last two consecutive meetings. The Bucks have only managed one win in their last eight trips to the Palace of Auburn Hills, where Detroit is 12-2 this season.

The Pistons have outscored the Bucks by an average of 26 points in their last two meetings, and are 20-9-1 ATS overall this season.

      Pick: Pistons -11 ½

Golden State at Houston (-3, 202)

Golden State (18-13) has made a remarkable turnaround from an 0-6 start. The Warriors have gone 10-6 this month, their best December in 15 years.

The Warriors have had great success against Houston in recent seasons. Golden State has won three straight contests against the Rockets, including a 113-94 win at Oracle Arena on Nov. 29.

The Warriors are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games in Houston, and 10-1 ATS in their last 11 against teams from the Southwest Division.

      Pick: Warriors +3

      Toronto at New Orleans (-6, 182 ½)

The Raptors have hit a rough patch, while the Hornets are on the verge of their longest winning streak this season.

This game is the last of a seven-game road stretch for Toronto – and it hasn’t gone well. It has dropped four of its six games on the current trip and has covered the spread just once over that time. The Raptors have shot less than 41 percent from the field in three straight contests.

New Orleans, meanwhile, is on a five-game winning run both straight up and ATS. The Hornets are outscoring opponents by an average of 18 points over that span, and will continue their streak against the road-weary Raptors.

      Pick: Hornets -6

      Portland at Utah (-7, 200)

The Blazers are on an NBA-best 13-game winning streak, during which they’ve beaten the Jazz on two occasions. They will try for a hat trick of wins over Utah tonight.

Remarkably, Portland has covered the spread in all but one of the 13 games, and on both occasions against the Jazz. A lot of the Blazers’ ATS success is down to reserve forward Travis Outlaw, who is averaging 14.9 points per game from the bench.

Conversely, Utah has lost three of its last four games both straight up and ATS. It could be without forward Andrei Kirilenko, who sat out Saturday’s loss to the Celtics with a biceps injury.

      Pick: Trail Blazers +7

      Minnesota at L.A. Clippers (-6 ½, 188)

Persistent injury problems have made this season a constant struggle for the Clippers, leaving them with one of the NBA’s worst records.

Center Aaron Williams and forward Tim Thomas are both doubtful for tonight’s game. Three other players – Paul Davis, Shaun Livingston and Elton Brand – are sidelined with long-term injuries that could see them miss the entire season.

With that list, it’s not surprising that the Clippers have gone into freefall. They have lost six straight games overall and seven consecutive contests at home. They now have one of the worst home records in the league (4-9).

      Pick: Timberwolves +6 ½

      Philadelphia at Seattle (+1 ½, 189 ½)

The Sonics have built their current roster around rookie phenom Kevin Durant. It remains to be seen if they can be successful without their star guard.

Durant left Saturday’s win over Minnesota after just 12 minutes with a sprained left finger. X-rays came back negative, but he is doubtful for tonight’s game. The Rookie is averaging 19.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

To make matters worse, Seattle could also be without second-leading scorer Chris Wilcox (13.6 points per game). He left Saturday’s contest with a sprained left knee and is a game-time decision for tonight.

      Pick: Sixers

National Hockey League – Ice Picks

        NHL
        Previews and Picks

        Monday, December 31

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today’s best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Atlanta at Boston (-122, 5 ½)

The Bruins are hoping to ring in the New Year with a much-needed win. They are losers of their last six, including a 5-0 loss at the hands of the Thrashers on Saturday.

Injuries and inconsistent goaltending have contributed to Boston’s downward spiral. Netminder Tim Thomas has been rusty since returning from a groin injury, and the team is still without center Patrice Bergeron and right wing Glen Murray.

But bettors know to be wary of desperate teams. The boys from Beantown might bring just enough grit to battle it out tonight. Zdeno Chara and the Bruins defense will try to contain Thrashers sniper Ilya Kovalchuk.

Atlanta's goaltending is sharp and Kari Lehtonen will look to continue his dominance over Claude Julien’s side. The Thrashers goalie has a 1.77 goals-against average and has picked up a win in each of his last five outings against Boston.

The Bruins have played under the total in 14 of their last 20 home games.

        Pick: under 5 ½

San Jose at Minnesota (-112, 5)

The road team has won six of the last eight meetings in this series.

Then again, most of the Sharks’ winning is done on the road anyway.

San Jose can credit their stellar away record (15-3-0-2) to the sharp play of goaltender Evgeni Nabokov. He leads the league with 21 wins and is third with a 1.99 goals-against average.

The team is committed to a defense-first mentality. "We're not putting up the offensive production we have had in the past, but at the same time our goals-against average is one of the best in the National Hockey League," defenseman Craig Rivet told reporters.

San Jose has won five of its last six against the Wild, including a 4-1 victory in Minnesota on Dec. 11.

        Pick: Sharks +102

        Colorado at Phoenix (-107, 5 ½)

It’s been over five years – a span including 16 matchups – since the Colorado Avalanche lost in regulation to the Phoenix Coyotes. The Avs have won nine of the last ten meetings and all five of their trips to the desert.

Both teams are slumping, but it appears this home-and-home series will favor the Avalanche. Phoenix is an abysmal 5-10-1 on home ice and has been sinfully bad on the power play. The Coyotes are only 2-for-21 with the man advantage in their last five games.

Phoenix hasn’t fared well against Western Conference competition, going 3-7 in its last 10. Look for the trend to continue tonight.

        Pick: Avalanche -103
