Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

      13) Tennessee makes the playoffs, with Kerry Collins leading game-winning drive; he also led game-winning drive in 38-36 win at Houston.. Have to have depth to win NFL games.

      12) Houston's Andre Davis had to set an NFL record when he ran back two kickoffs for TDs, in a 0:28 span of elapsed game time (end of second quarter, opening kickoff of second half).

      11) I coached against Davis' Little League team when he was 12; we had a bad team- he scored just about every time he got to bat against us. Apple Home Improvements was his team.

      10) I'd be curious to know whether coach Dungy or Manning decides when the QB gets taken out of the game.

      9) Todd Collins doesn't start a game for a decade, then leads Redskins to the playoffs, after one of their star players dies in a murder. If it was a movie, no one would believe it.

      8) Memo to nitwits who run NFL telecasts: number of plays is more important than time of possession.

      7) The last five NFC South champs had losing records in the season before they won the title.

      6) Jerry Rice caught 448 more passes than anyone else that played the game; thats an underrated stat.

      5) Tampa Bay's Luke McCown is pretty good; he's going to make himself a lot of money when the time comes, either from the Buccaneers or someone else.

      4) Domenik Hixon ran kick back for TD Saturday night for the Giants; he is same guy who collided with Kevin Everett back in in Buffalo in September, back when was playing for Denver that caused Everett to be temporarily paralyzed.

      3) Gutty effort by Colorado Buffaloes, who trailed Alabama in Independence Bowl 27-0 with 12:20 left in first half, but were gritty and gutty, rallying to get within 30-24. Win was first for the Crimson Tide since late October.

      2) Speaking of Colorado, Buffs' freshman QB Cody Hawkins gave his dad Dan, the Buffs' head coach, a samurai sword as a Christmas present. I never gave my dad a sword for XMas.

      1) It didn't matter because the Redskins won, but Minnesota lost in OT at Denver, after Peterson fumbled on half-yd line, and Williamson dropped pass for easy TD when he was 20 or 25 yards ahead of any Bronco defender. I am believer that the young QB Jackson is going to be a very good player.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.........

      13) Central Florida's Kevin Smith has carried ball 440+ times in 14 games; he is coming back to UCF next season; will he have anything left when he gets to the NFL? 440 carries in college season means he took an awful lot of wear and tear.

      12) UCLA named Rick Neuheisel as head coach; when they show highlights on Rose Bowl of Illinois' last appearance in Rose Bowl ('84), they'll show Neuheisel playing QB at UCLA.

      11) San Diego had unlikely win at Kentucky; freshman named Ginty, a walk-on had 18 points for Toreros; prior to Saturday, he had taken eight shots all season.

      10) NFL Network should hire the great Harry Kalas to work on its NFL primetime games; Bryant Gumbel just isn't good. Kalas is a distinctive voice, a superior play-by-play guy.

      9) Florida International led 16-0 at Purdue Saturday, but then Boilermakers went on 21-2 run to end half, and Purdue wound up winning game, 59-44.

      8) Credit to Giants for solid effort vs Patriots Saturday, but at end of the day, did they increase or decrease their chances of winning playoff game in Tampa next week?

      7) Giants are facing Jeff Garcia in playoffs next week; they've already lost to him in playoffs when he played for 49ers and Eagles. Garcia is taking this week off to get ready for playoffs.

      6) Visiting team went 4-0 in Missouri Valley games Saturday.

      5) Tennessee-Gonzaga was excellent game; credit to Bruce Pearl for going all over playing teams he could lose to. This will help them in March- they could be a Final Four team.

      4) Not only did Pitt get hammered at Dayton Saturday, they lost PF Fields with injured foot; it didn't look good when they carried him off the court.

      3) Penn State hasn't lost a non-Florida bowl game in almost thirty years, a streak that covers eleven games. Weird streak.

      2) Looks like Mike Martz is going to get canned in Detroit as offensive coordinator; marriage of him working for Marinelli, who was a line coach, never made sense to begin with. Line coaches want to run ball; Martz blew his chance to win world title as head coach because he wouldn't run ball vs Patriots.

      1) Bo Ryan's Wisconsin Badgers won at Texas Saturday, in a game they played without their PG, who hurt his ankle during Friday's practice. Ryan might be the best coach in country; in his career as a D-III coach, he won four national titles.

Golden State's Baron Davis had 27 points, eight assists, five rebounds and five steals to lead the Warriors to a 113-94 home win in that game - their third straight victory over the Rockets.

New Orleans has lost seven of its last nine games against Toronto, including four of five at home.

                      Monday's key NHL matchup notes

                      Atlanta at Boston (-125, 5 ½)

Boston lost seven of the last eight meetings against Atltanta. The Bruins have always had trouble containing Kovalchuk, who has six goals and two assists in his last five games against them.

                      Edmonton at Columbus (-160, 5)

Edmonton has won the last three meetings by a combined 12-3 score, including a 3-1 home win on Nov. 26 in the only matchup this season, to improve to 17-3-2 with three ties all-time against Columbus.

San Jose at Minnesota (-110, 5)

Nabokov has been in net for each of San Jose's last four games against the Wild - all wins - and has posted a 0.75 GAA. The Sharks have won their last three in Minnesota.

                      St. Louis at Detroit (off)

Detroit has at least one point in seven straight home games (5-0-2) against St. Louis.

                      Colorado at Phoenix (+105, 5 ½)

The Avalanche have won nine of the last 10 meetings and have not lost in regulation in 16 straight matchups with the Coyotes (17-18-1), dating to a 5-3 loss in Phoenix on March 30, 2002. Since that game, Colorado has won all five of its visits to Arizona.

                      N.Y. Islanders at Carolina (off)

The Hurricanes have won three straight against the Isles, outscoring them 17-6.

                      Vancouver at Calgary (-139, 5)

The Flames are just 4-8-4 in their last 16 games against the Canucks - a stretch which includes three different four-game winless streaks. Calgary hasn't gone five games against Vancouver without a victory since 1995. It was 0-3-0 with two ties in that drought, which spanned parts of two seasons.
