      Friday's College Basketball

      Game of the Day

NC State has been disappointment, losing to New Orleans at home, losing at East Carolina and getting crused at Michigan State; they're 1-4 vs spread as favorite. Davidson lost by 4 to North Carolina, 6 to Duke, 12 at UCLKA, so they've played lot of good teams, just haven't beaten any of them- they're 3-0 vs spread as an underdog.

      Rest of card

-- George Mason has been off for 13 days since losing 73-55 at Kent State; they're 7-3 overall, with Kent loss their only actual road game. Fla Int'l lost six of last seven games, dropping pair of Sun Belt games, 75-67 at Little Rock, 72-63 at Middle Tenn.

-- Akron won 70-61 (-6) at Youngstown State LY; Zips won last three games, are 7-2, but just 1-3 vs spread as fave. Penguins lost last three games, at East Ky (61-50), Kent State (59-52) and Robert Morris (74-71).

-- Clemson crushed host team 90-73 yesterday, should be ready to go here, vs DePaul team that led unbeaten Ole Miss 31-27 at half Thursday, lost to Rebels 69-63 (+7), fourth straight loss for Blue Demons.

-- Ole Miss came from behind to beat DePaul 69-63 Thursday, just their second game away from Oxford. LaSalle is 3-4 so far vs D-I teams, but their schedule has been so lame that this is their first game this season out of nine with a pointspread.

-- St John's lost 71-69 to Ohio in first round of Rainbow, after it led 28-25 at half, Storm's third straight loss after 4-0 start-- now they get road game at Hawai'i squad that had awful 61-59 loss to UL-Lafayette, a game they should never lose.

-- Georgia got upset by East Tennessee last night, trailing 32-23 at half; Dawgs are 6-2, but lost their two games away from their home. Tulane fell behind 32-20 at half, lost 64-57 to St Mary's in the first round last night; Green Wave is 1-3 away from home.

-- St Mary's is 4-1 after beating Tulane 64-57 Thursday; they're facing East Tennessee State club that upset Georgia last night after losing previous game 125-75 at Syracuse. Gaels are 2-1 vs spread as a favorite this season.

-- UL-Lafayette won last two games by combined total of three points, rallying in second half to nip UL-Monroe in its Sun Belt opener, then upsetting Hawai'i in opener here. Ohio is 7-3 after nipping St John's; they also have win at Maryland this season.

-- Buffalo is 4-0 at home, 0-4 on road, losing by 25 at UConn by 17 at Niagara, 47 at Pitt, 13 at Fla Int'l. Wyoming is 4-4 after bad loss to Montana State in last game; they're 1-2 vs spread when favored this season.

-- Pepperdine started 0-4, then won four in row, now lost four of last five; 10 of their 13 games have been on road. Waves lost at Little Rock 70-65 Tuesday; they're 6-1-1 vs spread as underdog. Manhattan won three of last four games, is 0-2 as favorite.

-- Rider is 2-2 on road this season, winning last two at Canisius, Monmouth; they're 3-2 vs spread as underdog. Rutgers lost to North Carolina in last game; they're 0-4 vs spread as a favorite this season.

-- St Joe's has been off for 12 days since OT loss at Creighton in last game; they're 4-3, with last two losses in OT. Fairfield is 1-6, losing last five games by 5-4-12-4-13 points. Hawks are 2-1 as a favorite so far this season.

-- Portland lost five of its last six games but gave Washington good game last week; they're 1-1 as a favorite. No. Colorado is playing third road game in five nights after losing at Gonzaga 77-57, at Oregon State 65-56.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today's key NHL betting matchup notes

          Friday's key NHL matchup notes

          Los Angeles at Columbus (-167, 5 1/2)

Columbus has already exploited Los Angeles' poor defensive play once this season, winning 4-1 at Staples Center on Oct. 31. The Blue Jackets have also dominated the series on home ice, winning seven of the last eight meetings.

          Philadelphia at Buffalo (-139, 6)

Philadelphia is 1-8-0 with one tie in its last 10 games at Buffalo. These teams meet again in Philadelphia on Saturday night.

          N.Y. Islanders at Pittsburgh (-141, 5 1/2)

The Penguins have won two of three against the Islanders this season, with all three games ending 3-2.

          N.Y. Rangers at Colorado (-135, 5 1/2)

The Avs have played the Rangers (17-14-3) just once since 2003, winning 2-1 at Madison Square Garden in December 2005. Colorado has won six straight against New York since January 2002.

New Jersey at Edmonton (+121, 5)

This will be New Jersey's first game at Edmonton since a 2-1 victory on Dec. 30, 2001. They are 4-0-0 with one tie in their last five visits, last losing there on Oct. 31, 1995.

          Dallas at Calgary (-152, 5)

Dallas, which is concluding a four-game road trip, has dropped three straight in Calgary.

Ice picks: Friday's best hockey bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Buffalo Sabres (-139, 6)

There will be at least a few Sabres backers reflecting on better days tonight at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo. The reason for the trip down memory lane is the return of Daniel Briere, a big reason why the Sabres were the best regular-season team in 2006-07.

Now Briere is providing the same strong play in Philly, where he ranks second on the team with 35 points.

The Sabres have moved on and seem to be finding life after losing the highly sought-after center. Buffalo is 11-4-0 in its last 15 games, including wins in four straight.

Philadelphia has lost four straight overall and has allowed 17 goals during its season-high skid. The Flyers are 1-8-0 with one tie in its last 10 games at Buffalo.

            Pick: Sabres

New York Islanders at Pittsburgh Penguins (-141, 5 1/2)

Sidney Crosby picked up his first Gordie Howe hat trick Thursday night when he had a goal, an assist and fought Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference. That might light a spark under Crosby just in time to play a team he has dominated since joining the league.

The Penguins captain has 34 points in 18 career games against the Islanders, scoring at least one point in each of his nine home games against them. Another trend worth mentioning is the Pens have won two of three against the Islanders so far this season, with all three games ending with the same 3-2 score.

A lack of scoring has hurt the Islanders all season. Their 71 goals are fewest in the league, they are the only team that doesn't have a player with at least 11 goals.

            Pick: Under

Dallas Stars at Calgary Flames (-152, 5)

Usually a team is more than happy to return home after a long road trip. For the Calgary Flames that may not be the case.

After sweeping a six-game road trip the Flames will try and keep the hot streak going at the Pengrowth Saddledome against the Dallas Stars. Calgary has not lost a game in regulation in December, going 7-0-2. A big reason for this was a line shuffling at the start of the month. The new line of Jarome Iginla, Daymond Langkow and Kristian Huselius have combined for 22 goals and 20 assists in nine games.

The Stars, who had a four-game win streak snapped on Thursday night, have dropped three straight games in Calgary.

            Pick: Flames

Philadelphia at Buffalo (7:30 p.m. EST).

Daniel Briere returns to Buffalo for the first time since signing an eight-year, $52 million contract with the Flyers last summer.

              STARS
              Thursday

-Marian Gaborik, Wild, scored five goals and added an assist to lead Minnesota to a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers.

-Guilliaume Latendresse, Canadiens, scored two goals to give Montreal a 5-2 win at Washington.

-Daniel Sedin, Canucks, scored twice in the third period, leading Vancouver to a 3-2 win over Dallas.

              WILD MAN

Marian Gaborik scored five goals, the most in the NHL since Sergei Federov scored five for Detroit on December 26, 1996, to lead Minnesota to a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday night. No Wild player had scored more than three goals in a game in team history, and Gaborik's six points tied his career high set previously on October 26, 2002, at Phoenix.

              SID THE KID

Sidney Crosby scored a goal, assisted on two by Evgeni Malkin, and dropped the gloves for the first time in the NHL to spur the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-4 shootout victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night.

The 20-year-old Penguins captain helped set up Malkin's first of the game 55 seconds in, scored his 16th of the season at 8:26, and then assisted on Malkin's 13th as Pittsburgh jumped to a 3-0 lead. Crosby fought Andrew Ference in the second period.

              CLIPPED

St. Louis snapped its four-game slide and ended Detroit's 12-game point streak by beating the Red Wings 3-2. Detroit lost in regulation for the first time in 13 contests. The Red Wings had picked up at least a point in 12 straight games (10-0-2) since dropping a 3-2 decision at Nashville Nov. 22.

              REDEMPTION

Guilliaume Latendresse scored two goals in his return from a benching, and Montreal beat Washington 5-2 Thursday night. Latendresse, scratched by coach Guy Carbonneau for the Canadiens' 3-2 loss to Florida on Tuesday, notched the fourth two-goal game of his NHL career - the second this month.

              SNAPPED

The Atlanta Thrashers ended the Ottawa Senators' winning streak at six, with a 3-2 victory Thursday night. ... Phoenix snapped an eight-game losing streak to the San Jose Sharks with a 3-2 victory.

              SPEAKING

''One time I got five goals when I was playing back home for a pro club back there, but this is just totally different. You score five goals in the NHL it's just a totally different experience. To reach it here with these guys in front of our fans is just unbelievable.'' - Marian Gaborik after the Wild's 6-3 victory over the Rangers on Thursday night. Gaborik became the first player since Sergei Federov to score five goals in a game.

                      New York at Charlotte
The Knicks haven't been able to point to many positive things this season, but Wednesday was one of them as New York shot a season-best 56.2 percent from the field in a 108-90 win over Cleveland. The Knicks have a good shot at building on that effort tonight against a Charlotte team that has won just three of its last 13 games after starting the season 6-4. New York looks like a good underdog pick (+6) according to Dunkel, which has the Knicks favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: New York (+6). Here are all of today's games.

It wasn't an auspicious start for the Devils' Western Canada road trip when they opened up with a 5-0 loss at Vancouver on Tuesday. New Jersey will try to bounce back, but could face a difficult time against an Oilers' team that has collected a point in eight of its last 10 games (6-2-2 record). Edmonton looks like a good home underdog pick (+115) according to Dunkel, which has the Oilers favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Edmonton (+115). Here are all of today's games.
