Pick 'n' roll: Thursday's best NBA bets
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Wizards at Miami Heat (-5 1/2, 205)

Miami has the talent to contend in the Eastern Conference.

Shaquille O’Neal is a shell of his former self but is still averaging more than 14 points on 60 percent shooting. O’Neal is also grabbing eight rebounds per night.

Dwyane Wade is hitting his stride and has scored at least 30 points in each of his last three outings. Wade is averaging 23 points on 46 percent shooting.

Miami also acquired Ricky Davis in an October trade that sent Antoine Walker to Minnesota. Davis gives the Heat another scoring threat, averaging more than 15 points.

Miami has won two straight and has covered the spread in three of its last four. It is also 10-0 straight up (SU) in its last 10 tilts with Washington.

      Pick: Heat -5 1/2

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers (off)

The Tim Duncan-less Spurs couldn’t outlast Golden State on Tuesday.

San Antonio did manage to limit the high-scoring Warriors to 96 points, though. It’s just the second time this campaign that Golden State has failed to top the century mark.

The Spurs also trounced Los Angeles 107-92 on Nov. 13 in the Lone Star State. San Antonio held Kobe Bryant to 18 points in that game, nine points below his season average. It also restricted L.A. to a meager 12 percent shooting from the three-point line.

The road team is 7-3 against the spread (ATS) in the last 10 tilts between the Spurs and Lakers. The Spurs are also 2-1 ATS without Duncan.

      Pick: Spurs

The Heat have picked up their game a little, closing out their recent road trip with back-to-back wins over the Clippers and Suns. Tonight they return home to face a Washington team they have beaten 15 of the last 16 times. Miami (FL) at Mississippi State
Mississippi State is expected to challenge for the SEC Western Division title, but has looked sluggish at times with out-of-conference losses already against Clemson, Southern Illinois and Miami (Ohio). The Hurricanes are a dangerous underdog (+5 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Miami favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Miami (FL) (+5 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL wagers

Calgary Flames at Tampa Bay Lightning (-125, 5 1/2)

The Lightning have been dominant on home ice this year going 11-3-2 thanks, in most part, to star Vincent Lecavalier. He leads the league in scoring with 46 points and 31 of those points have come on the Bolts' home ice. Lecavalier has been held off the scoreboard in just two home games this season. Tampa Bay is averaging 3.50 points per game at home this season while the Flames average just 2.69 goals on the road and enter tonight's contest without scoring more than three goals in their last seven contests overall.

                          Pick: Lightning -125

Edmonton Oilers at Detroit Red Wings (-280, 5 1/2)

In case you haven't noticed yet, Detroit's offense is pretty good. The Wings lead the league with 3.4 goals per game and during their current seven-game winning streak, they have scored four or more goals four times. Combine that with the fact the Oilers have played over the total in five straight games and seven of their last eight and this tilt has all the makings of a high-scoring affair.

                          Pick: over 5 1/2

Ottawa Senators at Pittsburgh Penguins (-110, 6)

The Senators have struggled against the Penguins recently, dropping four straight to them. Three of those losses came via the shootout, however, and while the Sens appear to be back to their winning ways, Pittsburgh continues to struggle with consistency. Ottawa is coming off a 6-0 rout of the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday while the Penguins will try to rebound from an 8-2 lashing by the Flyers. Getting Ottawa as a pick'em is a bargain against pretty well any team and should be taken advantage of.

                          Pick: Senators -110

                            SIDELINED

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, unbeaten the last three weeks, has a sprained ankle that will keep him out of the Pittsburgh Penguins' lineup for up to two months. Penguins forward Maxime Talbot has a similar injury and may be out a month. Both Fleury and Talbot were examined Wednesday by a team doctor after the Penguins returned from an eight-day road trip.

                            STRONG IN DEFEAT

Brendan Shanahan had a goal and two assists in the Rangers' 5-4 overtime loss to Washington.

                            SPEAKING

''I've given guys plenty of opportunities, but patience can only go so long. We're in a business. You have to produce and you have to play hard.'' - Islanders coach Ted Nolan after a 5-3 loss to Buffalo on Wednesday night. Nolan juggled lines and sat defenseman Bryan Berard for the final two periods in an effort to jump-start his club that came in ranked last in the NHL with 63 goals.
