        National Football League – mismatches

        NFL

        Thursday, December 13

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NFL mismatches: Where to find the edge in Thursday’s game
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three key mismatches in Broncos-Texans game

        Denver Broncos at Houston Texans (- 1 1/2, 47)

Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall vs. Texans’ secondary

Brandon Marshall is developing into one of the best receivers in the NFL. The second-year Broncos star has looked unstoppable recently and should punish the Texans’ secondary this week.

Marshall has 279 receiving yards and three touchdowns in his last three games and has become quarterback Jay Cutler’s favorite target. At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Marshall is dominant in the air, but also has the power and speed to rip through defenses on the run.

The 22-year-old ranks eighth in the league among receivers with 1,029 yards and six TDs.

The Texans have given up 767 yards in the air and four receiving TDs in their last three contests, two of which were losses.

Texans defensive end Mario Williams vs. Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler

Mario Williams is playing so well that his teammates believe he is a lock to make the Pro Bowl. The defensive end, who has 9.5 sacks this season, can further strengthen his case for the honor with a big performance against Denver and Jay Cutler.

The second-year pro has recorded at least one sack in four straight games and ranks ninth overall in the league. Of all the players with four or more sacks, Williams is the only one who also has at least 40 tackles.

He’ll be licking his chops at Thursday’s opposition. The Broncos have allowed their quarterback to be sacked at least once each game this season, for a total of 23 times in 13 contests.

Broncos’ turnovers gained vs. Texans’ turnovers lost

If the Texans learned to take care of the football they would have a much better record than their current 6-7. They are the NFL’s worst offenders for turning over the ball, a weakness the Broncos will be eager to expose.

Houston has given away 31 turnovers this season –16 intercepted passes and 15 fumbles.

Denver, meanwhile, has forced opponents to cough up the ball on 22 occasions, 11 of those interceptions. Cornerback Dre Bly leads the way with 4 INTs this season. He could make life difficult for Houston’s backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels, who is expected to start in place of the injured Matt Schaub.

                (ESPN | 8 PM ET)

Insiders believe this is a classic power conference vs. mid-major “mismatch” where the public will likely assume the bigger, more physical Boilermakers will push the Chippewas around. However, Purdue dropped 3 straight to close out the regular season following a 5-0 start and finished a disappointing 3-5 in Big Ten play. Central Michigan won 4 of 5 before winning the MAC title game.

                (ESPN | 8 PM ET)

                MONDAY, DECEMBER 31ST

Bell Helicoptor Armed Forces Bowl - Fort Worth, TX
                Air Force vs. California
                (ESPN | 12:30 PM ET)

While Air Force has won six of its last seven games, the game they lost, 34-31 to New Mexico, was the only team of the bunch to finish the season with a winning record. Going back even farther, the last win Air Force had over a winning team was on September 13th, when they beat Texas Christian, 20-17.
Although the Bears have lost five of their last six games, it gives the team a chance to finish on an up note, and begin laying the foundation for next season. The game also marks a homecoming for the two Golden Bears from the Dallas area, Justin Forsett and Brock Mansion.
Motivation could again be a huge factor, as Cal lost $10 in slipping from Rose Bowl to Holiday Bowl and got blown out 45-31 by Texas Tech as an 11-point favorite back in 2004.
Cal is 2-12 ATS in its last 14 games on grass.
The OVER is 13-6 in Air Force’s last 19 games as an underdog.

                Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA
                USC vs. Illinois
                (ABC | 4:30 PM ET)

Insiders believe no team will benefit more from the extra time off than the Trojans, who were also beat up at the end of last season before beating Michigan 32-18 in the Rose Bowl. Injuries ultimately hurt USC’s shot at the national championship, as both of the team’s losses happened with backup QB Mark Sanchez under center. Many considered the Trojans the most dangerous team in the country at the end of the season with the early losses costing them a BCS spot.
Illinois is 3-11 ATS in its last 14 games on grass.
Illinois is 10-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
The UNDER is 10-1 in Illinois’ last 11 games on grass.
The UNDER is 16-5 in USC’s last 21 games overall.

Allstate Sugar Bowl - New Orleans, LA
                Hawaii vs. Georgia
                (FOX | 8:30 PM ET)

Oddsmakers opened Hawaii at +8 in this game after Boise State’s stunning win over Oklahoma last year in the Fiesta Bowl, but the public quickly bet this number up to 11 points in favor of Georgia. Many still believe Hawaii’s schedule that produced an unbeaten season was too soft and lacked a legitimate power conference opponent like the Bulldogs.
Georgia likely won’t be overconfident in this game after underestimating West Virginia in the 2006 Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs were blown out by the Mountaineers in the first half before a furious rally came up short. They realize this is a statement game for them, which could lead to a preseason #1 ranking next year with an impressive victory.
Two very different offenses will take the field in New Orleans, as Georgia would love to control the clock with a power running game while Hawaii looks to light up the scoreboard with a pass-happy attack led by Heisman Trophy contender Colt Brennan. Some insiders think the Bulldogs will get a major test defensively since the closest thing to Hawaii’s offense in the SEC is Kentucky.
Hawaii is 17-6 ATS in its last 23 games on turf.
Hawaii is 7-18 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
The OVER is 23-9-1 in Hawaii’s last 33 games on turf.

Oklahoma played in this game a year ago and saw an underrated Boise State team pull off a shocking upset. The Sooners have had to listen to how they “let themselves get beat” by the Broncos every day since then and just got done beating a Missouri team that said “they beat themselves” in the first meeting. Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops takes revenge very seriously, so you can bet he will have his team fired up for an explosive West Virginia team with a similar run-oriented attack as Boise.
West Virginia is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games on grass.

BCS National Championship - New Orleans, LA
                Ohio State vs. Louisiana State
                (FOX | 8 PM ET)

Last year, the extended time off (51 days) between games really cooled off the previously unbeaten Buckeyes, and insiders feel that same problem will recur against the SEC’s best team. The Tigers have the most NFL talent on their roster and will be able to make good use of the break to heal their wounds, just like USC did in last year’s Rose Bowl. That’s bad news for the Buckeyes and could very well lead to another ugly title game.
Ohio State is 6-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Ohio State is 23-8 ATS in its last 31 games overall.

LSU is 2-7-1 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
Underdog is 6-3 SU in BCS title games, winning 4 of last 5.

Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Timberwolves at Washington Wizards (-9, 197)

Timberwolves forward Craig Smith is finally fit after a persistent ankle injury limited his playing time for most of the season. The more he has been able to play, the better Minnesota has looked.

Smith helped the Timberwolves snap a five-game losing streak against the Suns on Saturday. In the last two games he’s made 16 of 26 shots and scored 36 points. He also grabbed 17 rebounds – 12 in the offensive end.

Minnesota has failed to cover against Washington in four straight contests going back to February 2006. But with Smith fueling an offense that also features Al Jefferson and Antoine Walker, the Wolves are capable of recording their third straight ATS win.

                    Pick: Timberwolves

Toronto Raptors at Atlanta Hawks (tba)

Chris Bosh returned from injury to help the Raptors to a 93-80 victory over Houston on Sunday. He is clearly capable of leading Toronto to its second straight win when they face the Hawks on Tuesday.

Bosh scored 21 points against the Rockets after missing the previous five games with a groin injury. He also had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots in the game.

The last time the Raptors met the Hawks, Bosh racked up 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 103-91 win. Toronto is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games overall.

                    Pick: Raptors

Indiana Pacers at Cleveland Cavaliers (tba)

The injury crisis that plunged the Cavaliers into a six-game losing streak seems set to end, just in time for the visit of the Indiana Pacers. The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that LeBron James will return to the lineup after he sat out the streak with a sprained finger.

Guard Larry Hughes returned Saturday after an extended absence and the newspaper also reports that forward Anderson Varejao could come back on Tuesday.

That would put Cleveland at full strength for the first time this season and enable the team to cover the spread for a fifth consecutive time against Indiana.

                    Pick: Cavaliers

L.A. Clippers at New Jersey Nets (-7, 184)

The home team has dominated this matchup in recent seasons, winning seven straight games. It has also covered the spread in six of the last seven contests.

That does not bode well for the traveling Clippers. They haven’t managed a win – either straight up or ATS – in five straight contests at the Izod Center. In fact, the Clippers have lost five of their last six road games overall this season, while covering the spread just once.

The Nets, meanwhile, are 6-0 ATS in their last six games against teams from the Pacific Division.

                    Pick: Nets

                    Detroit Pistons at Memphis Grizzlies (+5 1/2, 203 1/2)

Detroit’s defense is second only to Boston’s in the league in terms of points allowed. It is allowing opponents to shoot just 43.8 percent from the field and holding them to 91.8 points per game.

The Pistons’ staunch defense, coupled with an improving offense, has made the team one of the best ATS bets in the league. Detroit has won – and covered – in six of its last seven games, outscoring opponents by an average 17.4 points.

Memphis is 1-3 ATS in its last four overall, and that’s not likely to improve against the in-form Pistons.

                    Pick: Pistons

Seattle SuperSonics at Chicago Bulls (-8, 189)

The Bulls have the worst offense in the NBA and that’s a good reason to back the visiting Sonics on Tuesday.

Chicago is shooting just 39.7 percent from the field and averaging a lowly 89.3 points per game. The Bulls have broken the 100-point mark just once this season – a major reason why they are 6-12 against the spread.

Seattle rolls into town having won two of its last three on the back of some strong Kevin Durant outings. The Sonics guard has a combined 76 points and 19 rebounds in his last three, including a 35-point effort in the win over Milwaukee.

                    Pick: SuperSonics

Portland Trail Blazers at Utah Jazz (-12 1/2, 205)

Deron Williams had 41 points against Dallas on Saturday, his third straight game with 28 points or more.

Williams made 13-of-20 field goals, 3-of-4 three-pointers and 12-of-13 free throws against Dallas – in addition to three rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Carlos Boozer added another 24 points and five rebounds.

Boozer and Williams should be able to help Utah cover the spread against a defensively weak Portland team. The Blazers are allowing opponents to put up 98.4 points per game, while shooting 45.6 percent from the field.

                    Pick: Jazz

San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors (tba)

To be a top team you have to be able to cope when key players pick up injuries. That’s exactly what the Spurs did last week when they went 3-0 without All-Star forward Tim Duncan.

Duncan was sidelined with knee and ankle ailments, but Manu Ginobili did a remarkable job of picking up the slack. He scored a season-high 37 points against the Mavericks on Wednesday and followed it with another 37 on Friday against the Jazz. He also averaged six rebounds and six assists in those two games.

It’s unclear if Duncan will return to face the Warriors, but it almost seems a moot point. The Spurs are more than capable of covering the spread against Golden State for the fourth straight time in his absence.

                    Pick: Spurs

Portland Trail Blazers at Utah Jazz (-12 1/2, 205)

These teams split their season series in 2006-07, but the Blazers lost both of their road games. They've dropped 11 of 12 in Utah since the 2001-02 season, including six straight since an 87-73 victory on Feb. 6, 2004.

                        Tuesday NBA Gameday

Danny Granger and the Indiana Pacers will be gunning for a divisional win over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena on Tuesday. Here is your NBA Gameday:

Indiana Pacers at Cleveland Cavaliers, 7:00pm ET

The Pacers will be looking to improve on their poor conference record when they take on the Cavs on Tuesday night. Indiana has won two of their past three and six of their past 10 games, and they're coming off a 115-109 road victory over the Magic. Granger led the way with 27 points against Orlando, while Jamaal Tinsley contributed 20 points.

Cleveland is hoping that LeBron James is able to return from his finger injury for this contest. The Cavs have lost five straight games with James out of the lineup, and they've fallen below the .500 mark on the season. Against the Bobcats on the road last time out the Cavaliers fell 96-93, with Larry Hughes contributing a team-high 22 points.

Los Angeles Clippers at New Jersey Nets, 7:30pm ET

The Clippers have lost eight of their past 10 games to sink to the bottom of the Pacific Division standings. Los Angeles has also lost four of their five games in the month of December, with their only win coming last Friday versus the Kings. Corey Maggette tossed in a team-high 24 points in the Clippers' 100-94 home loss to Miami on Sunday.

The Nets had Jason Kidd in the lineup on Sunday night, but they still fell 104-89 on the road to the Wizards. New Jersey has now lost three games in a row to sit at 9-12 on the season. Vince Carter led the Nets with a 30-point performance against Washington, while Bostjan Nachbar picked up 19 points and Kidd kicked in 13 points and 13 assists.

Detroit Pistons at Memphis Grizzlies, 8:00pm ET

Detroit continued their hot December with a 104-85 win over the Bobcats on Sunday night. The Pistons have won five of their six contests this month, and they're now 14-6 and in first place in the Central Division. Chauncey Billups picked up 20 points for the Pistons against Charlotte, while Antonio McDyess added 19 points and nine rebounds.

The Grizzlies have lost each of their past four games to sit with a 6-13 record on the season. Memphis last won on December 1, when they got past the lowly Timberwolves by a final score of 109-80. Last time out the Grizzlies got 17 points and 11 rebounds from Rudy Gay and a 13-10 effort from Pau Gasol in a 96-78 road loss to the Hawks.

San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors, 10:30pm ET

The Spurs haven't had much trouble winning without Tim Duncan on the floor; the Western Conference's top team has won five straight games and nine of their past 10 contests. Duncan could return from his ankle injury on Tuesday. Manu Ginobili exploded for 37 points on Friday night as the Spurs rallied to a 104-98 home victory over the Jazz.

Golden State has been on a roll lately as well, climbing back over the .500 mark after slumping in the beginning of November. The Warriors, though, are coming off a 123-113 loss to the Lakers on the road on Sunday night. Baron Davis led the Warriors' attack with 20 points and seven assists in that defeat, while Stephen Jackson added 18 points.
