Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Bobcats (off)

LeBron James makes the Cavaliers tick. Without him, they are a shadow of the team that won last season’s Eastern Conference.

James missed the last four games with a sprained finger and Cleveland lost all four. Before his injury, the Cavs were shooting 45 percent from the field and averaging 102 points per game. In their last five games, they have shot 37.9 percent and averaged 78.2 points.

Cleveland refuses to put a timeline on his return, but the latest reports suggest he won't play against Charlotte. That puts the Bobcats in good shape to cover for the fourth time in five meetings with the Cavaliers.

    Pick: Bobcats

Memphis Grizzlies at Atlanta Hawks (off)

The Grizzlies have been struggling on the road and their problems are likely to continue in Atlanta.

Memphis is 1-6 ATS in its last seven games at Philips Arena, including a 106-105 loss on Sept. 3. The Grizzlies are 2-7 straight up on the road this season.

The Hawks enter this game off a 90-89 home win over Minnesota thanks to Joe Johnson’s three-pointer at the buzzer. If Johnson can build on his 21-point performance in that game, Atlanta will cover.

    Pick: Hawks

Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks (off)

The Knicks have won and covered the spread in four of their last six games.

Though New York was without Stephon Marbury and Eddy Curry in Wednesday’s win over the Nets, both are expected to return here against the 76ers. Marbury is producing 14.7 points per game and a team-high 5.2 assists, while Curry is scoring 16.6 points per contest.

The 76ers have lost five of their last six road games, failing to cover the spread on four occasions.

    Pick: Knicks

Phoenix Suns at Minnesota Timberwolves (off)

The Timberwolves have won just twice in 17 games this season, the worst straight-up record in the NBA.

They are being outscored by an average of 9.2 points per game and have broken the 100-point mark just twice in their last 11 contests.

The Suns travel to Minnesota as one of the hottest teams in the league. They boast the top-ranked offense in the NBA (110.5 points per game), and have covered the spread in four of their last five games at the Target Center.

    Pick: Suns

Utah Jazz at Dallas Mavericks (off)

The Mavericks have jumped out to a manageable 12-8 straight up mark, but their 7-13 ATS record is cause for concern.

Dallas’ poor spread record is mainly due to an inability to extend a lead. Three of the Mavericks’ last four contests were decided by five points or less.

Utah has a respectable 10-9 record against the spread and has covered two of its last three games against Dallas.

    Pick: Jazz

Sacramento Kings at Denver Nuggets (off)

The Kings will be without guard Kevin Martin for the trip to Denver. That could hamper their chances of snapping a two-game losing streak against the Nuggets.

Martin, who leads the team with 24.5 points per game, will miss four to five weeks after picking up a groin injury. The Kings are already without point guard Mike Bibby and forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, so their offensive will be seriously diminished.

That’s good news for the Nuggets as they chase their fourth win in five games.

    Pick: Nuggets

Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls (off)

The Celtics have won 15 of their 17 games this season, so it’s difficult to see them losing to the struggling Bulls.

However, Chicago is 7-1 ATS in its last nine meetings against the Celtics and 5-2 in the last seven outings at the United Center.

Boston has not been as dominant against the spread in recent weeks, going 2-3-1 ATS in its last six contests.

    Pick: Bulls

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's key NBA betting matchup notes
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Charlotte Bobcats (off)

The Bobcats won both of their home games against Cleveland last season.

Memphis Grizzlies at Atlanta Hawks (-4 ½, 200)

Pau Gasol struggled in two games against Atlanta in 2006-07, averaging 7.0 points and 3.5 rebounds, although one of the contests was his first game of the season after missing the first 22 with a broken left foot. The Hawks won both of those meetings after losing their previous six games against the Grizzlies.

Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks (off)

The Knicks (6-12) suffered their sixth straight defeat in Philadelphia. New York has dropped two of its last three against the Sixers (6-13) in New York following a six-game winning streak there.

Phoenix Suns at Minneosta Timberwolves (+10, 213)

Phoenix won three of four meetings with Minnesota last season, as Nash averaged 13.8 assists and Marion had a double-doubles in each game.

Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls (+6, 180)

Boston (16-2) lost all three games against Chicago (6-11) last season and recorded its last win against the Bulls on Jan. 29, 2005. Since then, the Celtics haven't beaten the Bulls, but they also didn't have Garnett.

Utah Jazz at Dallas Mavericks (off)

The Mavs have won eight of their last 11 meetings, and seven of the last eight at home.

Sacramento Kings at Denver Nuggets (off)

This is the first of three meetings this season between Denver and Sacramento after the teams split four matchups last season. The Nuggets didn't have both Iverson and Anthony available for the losses, but the duo averaged 50.0 points in their two victories.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        NBA Gameday
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Saturday NBA Gameday

A heavyweight Western Conference clash highlights the Saturday NBA action, as the Utah Jazz take on the Dallas Mavericks. In the Eastern Conference on Saturday, the Boston Celtics take on the bumbling Chicago Bulls, while the Charlotte Hornets will hope to see LeBron James in his street clothes when the Cleveland Cavaliers pay a visit.

        Utah at Dallas

The Jazz had their three-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday after losing to Sacramento 117-107 as a 2.5-point road favorite. Deron Williams led the Jazz with 30 points and seven assists, while Carlos Boozer chipped in with his regular double-double, 19 points and 11 rebounds. Utah could be a bit tired on Saturday night after dealing with San Antonio the night before.

Dallas will be looking to bounce back Saturday night after getting pounded by Denver 122-109 as an 8.5-point favorite on Thursday. Dirk Nowitzki tied his season-high points total with 32 to go along with 12 rebounds, but Dallas could not contain Allen Iverson who dumped 35 points and 12 assists on them. Jerry Stackhouse saw his time on the court exceed 30 minutes for the third straight game as he netted a season-high 23 points for Dallas in the loss.

This the first meeting between Utah and Dallas this season. Last year they faced off three times with Utah taking two of three both SU and ATS.

        Boston at Chicago

The Celtics entered the weekend on a four-game win streak and should be easily favored when they take on the struggling Bulls in Chicago on Saturday. Boston entertained Toronto on Friday night, making Saturday’s contest their third game in four days. Against Philadelphia on Wednesday night, Kevin Garnett poured in 22 points as Boston defeated the 76ers 113-103 as a 10-point favorite. Paul Pierce had 19 points and 12 assists in the win, while Ray Allen had an off-night with 12 points on 3-of-12 shooting.

The Bulls will also be playing their third game in four nights on Saturday, as they clashed with Detroit on Friday night. Chicago may slowly be turning things around after winning three of their last four before heading into Detroit. On Wednesday night, Chicago defeated Charlotte 91-82 as a 1-point favorite behind a season-high 30 points from Luol Deng. Andres Nocioni added 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Chris Duhon continued to make a push for the starting point guard spot with 12 points and nine assists.

This is the first time the Bulls will play the new-look Celtics this season. Last year, when Boston was awful and Chicago was good, the Bulls beat the Celtics three times while going 2-1 ATS.

        Cleveland at Charlotte

Even if LeBron James doesn’t return from an injured finger on Saturday, the Cavaliers may get just what they need to snap their current losing streak when they face the Bobcats. Both Cleveland and Charlotte are riding losing streaks right now. Without LeBron in the lineup the Cavaliers have lost their last four games. The Bobcats are currently on a seven-game losing streak, but they can’t blame an injury to a star player like Cleveland can.

The Cavaliers' latest loss came on Wednesday when they were hammered by Washington 105-86 as a 9.5-point underdog. Daniel Gibson, Drew Gooden and Shannon Brown each scored 13 points for Cleveland.

The Bobcats dropped their seventh straight on Wednesday in a 91-82 loss to Chicago as a 1-point underdog. Gerald Williams led Charlotte with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Raymond Felton and Jason Richardson each had 17 points.

Last season Cleveland and Charlotte hooked up four times with each team winning two games at home. However, the Bobcats won the spread battle with a 3-1 ATS record.

            Write-up

            Saturday, December 8

            ----------------------------------------------------------------------

            Saturday's College Basketball

            Top Ten Games

First Lute Olson announced he wasn't coaching this year, then came word he is getting divorced, so lot of distractions for the Wildcats, as they head east to play Illinois squad they beat by 12 in Phoenix LY, using big second half. Arizona is 4-2 after win over Texas A&M. Illini are 5-2, playing pretty good schedule.

Kent State won 68-62 at George Mason LY (+4); Patriots are 7-2 but this is their first true road game after five neutral court tilts. Kent won four in row, seven of last eight (lost 78-65 to Xavier); they beat Saint Louis by 41 at home ten days ago.

Dayton upset Louisville 68-64 LY (+5.5); Flyers won last five in a row since 67-56 loss at George Mason- they have road wins at Miami, Holy Cross by a combined total of three points. Only second game in two weeks for Cardinals, who snuck by Miami OH last week, 47-44 (-11). Flyers are 1-1 as underdog this year.

Missouri lost 79-62 at Purdue LY (+5); Boilers lost at Clemson 61-58, in only road game so far. Talented freshmen have made Purdue deeper this season. Tigers allowed 90 ppg in losing last two games, at Arkansas, at Cal- can Mizzou pressure force the younger, more talented Boilers into turnovers?

BYU lost 76-61 at Michigan State LY (+7); Cougars are 7-1, with win over Louisville and 10-point loss to North Carolina out on a neutral floor in Vegas. Spartans are 7-1, losing only to UCLA in game they led by 11 at half; they had solid 66-61 win at Bradley during week, in game they trailed 28-27 at halftime.

Wisconsin beat Marquette 70-66 LY (+3.5); Badgers are 3-0 vs spread as favorite this year, 6-1 SU overall, with only loss 82-58 at Duke. First true road game for Marquette team that lost 77-73 to Duke in Maui, their only loss- best team they've beaten so far is Oklahoma State by 30, also in Maui.

Now that Syracuse played its one out-of-state game, its back to friendly confines of Carrier Dome, but Rhode Island is a strong foe, having beaten Providence 77-60 during week, their seventh win in eight games. Rams have win at South Florida, lost 76-72 at BC. Orange are 4-1 at home, losing only to UMass 107-100.

Wright State beat Butler 60-55 in Horizon tourney last year, as Raiders were surprise winners, made NCAAs; home side won both series meetings LY, with Butler losing 77-65 at the Nutter Center, after winning by 31 at home. Bulldogs won 53-46 in the Horizon opener at Detroit Thursday. Wright lost to Valparaiso, at Marist in their last two games.

Duquesne lost by 5 to Pitt during week, while West Virginia did number on Auburn (88-59 in Birmingham); Dukes are improved, will press whole game, but will have trouble scoring, making it harder to press. The way WVa moves ball, and they way they get after it on defense, this could be bad matchup for the Dukes

Ole Miss takes its unbeaten record on road for first time; they are 6-0, with wins over South Alabama, New Mexico, Monroe, but all were at home. Central Florida has beaten Nevada (63-60) at home, lost by two in OT to Kansas State, by 8 to Villanova at Disney (also beat Penn State by 11 at Disney).

            Highlights of rest of card

-- Michigan fired Duke alum Amaker to hire Beilien; Wolverines lost last four games, dropping last game by 11 at Harvard, so it is Michigan team that hasn't caught on to Beilien's teaching.

-- Western Michigan lost 77-75 in OT at Northwestern LY (+5.5) This is first home game for Broncos.

-- DePaul beat Kansas LY 64-57 (+10) so be sure Blue Demons have Jayhawks' full attention here. Kansas is 8-0, covering four of their last five games.

-- Iowa is 6-3, 1-1 on road after solid 62-55 win at Northern Iowa during week; Hawkeyes beat Iowa State 77-59 at home last yr. Cyclones lost last game by 35 at Drake; not good.

-- Georgia won 87-86 at Wake Forest LY (+1); Deacons are 1-2 on road, winning at Iowa, losing by 3 at Vandy, 4 at Charlotte.

-- San Diego State won 74-73 at St Mary's LY (+1); Aztecs won seven of first eight games, are 5-1 vs spread as favorite already this season. First road game for Gaels squad that beat Oregon and Seton Hall at home.

National Hockey League - Matchup Notes

                NHL

                Saturday, December 8

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's key NHL betting matchup notes
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs (-170, 5 ½)

The Leafs have dropped seven of their last nine overall meetings against Boston, going 1-4-0 at home while being outscored 14-4 in those defeats.

Carolina Hurricanes at Montreal Canadiens (-140, 5 ½)

Though they've dropped two of three to the Canadiens this season, Carolina is 12-4-1 against Montreal since the 2004-05 lockout, including four wins in the first round of the 2006 playoffs en route to winning the Stanley Cup.

Atlanta Thrashers at Washington Capitals (-120, 5 ½)

Ovechkin has registered three multi-goal and four multi-point games in his last seven games against the Thrashers. Overall, he has nine goals - six on the power play and two game-winners - with two assists in that span.

Minnesota Wild at Columbus Blue Jackets (-140, 5)

Minnesota will head to Columbus, where it has lost eight straight since a 3-1 victory on Jan. 18, 2002. The Blue Jackets (13-10-5) have been tough at home this season, going 8-3-3.

New York Islanders at Tampa Bay Lightning (-180, 5 ½)

Strong goaltending from Rick DiPietro has kept the Islanders in most games, but he has had limited success in his career against the Lightning, going 3-5-3 with a 2.57 GAA in 12 appearances.

He did, however, help the Islanders end an eight-game losing streak in the series by making 28 saves in a 4-0 victory at Nassau Coliseum on Nov. 1.

Anaheim Ducks at Nashville Predators (-160, 5)

The Ducks (14-12-4) will be trying to keep their resurgent offense going in Nashville, where they lost twice last season. Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who made 39 saves against Chicago last night, stopped 28 shots in the win over the Predators earlier this season.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Vancouver Canucks (-160, 5 ½)

Crosby - the NHL's reigning scoring champ and MVP - was 13 years old when the Penguins last defeated the Canucks on Nov. 3, 2000, Vancouver has since won five straight from Pittsburgh following a 16-game stretch in which the Canucks managed one win and one tie.

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-160, 5 ½)

Bryzgalov looks to lead the Coyotes look to their fourth win in as many games this season against their Pacific Division rivals on Saturday night when the teams meet at Staples Center.

Buffalo Sabres at San Jose Sharks (-150, 5 ½)

The Sabres are 0-4-1 with four ties in their last nine games at San Jose since a 7-1 victory in their first visit there on Nov. 12, 1991.

                  Southern Illinois at Charlotte
How good the Salukis are isn't a surprise anymore, which might explain the back-to-back double digit losses to major conference USC (70-45) and Indiana (64-51). The latter snapped SIU's 15-game home winning streak. Now it's the Salukis who have the bullseye on their backs as they hit the road to face an improving Charlotte team that knocked off Davidson (75-68) on Wednesday behind Leemire Goldwire's 21 second-half points. The 49ers look like a dangerous home underdog (+5) according to Dunkel, which has SIU favored by only 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Charlotte (+5). Here are all of today's games.

                        Dunkel

                        Utah at Dallas
The Mavericks look to take advantage of a Utah team that lost a tough road game last night at San Antonio (104-98) for its second straight loss. But Dallas has had a hard time taking advantage of anything lately as the Mavs have dropped three of their last four and six of their last nine straight up. Avery Johnson's team doesn't look like a very comfortable favorite (-6) according to Dunkel, which has Dallas favored by only 3 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Utah (+6). Here are all of today's games.

                          Buffalo at San Jose
It's been a rough start to the road trip for Buffalo, which lost the first two games to Anaheim and L.A. by the combined margin of 12-3. Hoping to bounce back, the Sabres don't catch much of a break facing a San Jose team that returns home after sweeping a three-game road trip behind the hot goaltending of Evgeni Nabokov, who shut out the Coyotes last night and allowed only four goals total on the trip. San Jose looks like a good pick (-150) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Sharks favored by 2. Dunkel Pick: San Jose (-150). Here are all of today's games.
