Pick 'n' roll: Sunday's best NBA bets

Chicago Bulls at Toronto Raptors (-5, 186)

The Bulls were considered top contenders in the Eastern Conference before the season, but a disastrous circus trip has derailed their year. They have lost four of five on the road since the big top moved in, a streak that has dropped their record to 2-7.

Chicago is averaging only 87.3 points per game and is shooting a NBA-worst 38.6 percent from the field. The Bulls faced the struggling Knicks in New York last night, but shot just 34.5 percent from the floor in an 85-78 loss.

The Bulls’ struggles are likely to continue tonight when they close out their road trip in Toronto. The Raptors have won three straight against Chicago, covering the spread in each of those wins.

    Pick: Raptors -5

Utah Jazz at Detroit Pistons (+1, 186)

The Pistons could be without Rasheed Wallace for Utah’s visit tonight as he tries to recover from a knee injury. They will also be sweating the fitness of guard Richard Hamilton, who has been struggling with flu-like symptoms since a lackluster performance in Friday’s win over the 76ers.

The Jazz have no such injury problems ahead of tonight’s game. Carlos Boozer continues to impress, producing 19 points and 16 rebounds in Friday’s 99-71 win over New Orleans. Utah’s defense, which struggled early in the season, has held its last two opponents to 75 points or less.

Utah is 6-1 against the spread (ATS) in its last seven against the Pistons.

    Pick: Jazz -1

Cleveland Cavaliers at Indiana Pacers (-2, 207 1/2)

LeBron James is hitting his stride and, not surprisingly, the Cavaliers are starting to win. The 22-year-old posted his third triple-double of the season in a 111-108 win over the Raptors on Saturday. James ended the night with 37 points.

James is leading the NBA in scoring with 31.4 points per game and has averaged 39 points in his last five contests. Tonight, Cleveland is chasing its first three-game winning streak of the season.

The Cavs have won six of seven against the Pacers, covering in three straight. James is averaging 24.8 points against them overall, including 27.3 points against them last season.

    Pick: Cavaliers +2

San Antonio Spurs at Seattle SuperSonics (+9, 198 1/2)

The Spurs travel to Seattle looking for a season-high fifth-straight victory. They are also chasing a sixth consecutive win over the Sonics and a third straight in Seattle.

San Antonio is coming off an impressive 101-88 win over Memphis on Friday, in which Tim Duncan had 28 points and nine rebounds. Tony Parker added 21 points and eight assists for the Spurs, who are averaging 99.8 points this season.

The Sonics, meanwhile, are the only remaining NBA team without a home win. They are one of the league’s worst defensive teams (allowing 108 points per game) and are 0-4 ATS in their last four against the Spurs.

    Pick: Spurs -9

New Jersey Nets at L.A. Lakers (-7, 197)

The Nets’ reliance on Vince Carter is plain for all to see. They lost all five games that he missed with an ankle injury, and have won two straight contests since his return to the lineup.

Carter had 15 points in 35 minutes off the bench in Friday's 98-93 win over Seattle and he also seems to be bringing the best out of Richard Jefferson. He’s tallied two straight 30-point games since Carter’s return.

In two games against the Lakers last season, Carter averaged 27 points and Jefferson averaged 16. If they produce similar performances tonight, the Nets should at least cover against a Los Angeles team that has lost two straight.

    Pick: Nets +7

      Sunday's Games

      Top Three Games

Kansas just pounded on Northern Arizona 87-46, leading 44-10 at the half; NAU lost by only 76-69 at Arizona (41-30 at half). It is not helping Wildcats that their coach disappeared just days before the season started- they lost to Virginia at home, 75-72. Jayhawks are rolling at 4-0, with no wins by less than 23 points.

Villanova beat Central Florida 76-68, George Mason 84-76 in the first two rounds at Disney; they're 23-57 (40.4%) from arc in the two games. NC State beat Rider 72-63 (trailed 31-28 at half) and South Carolina 63-61, holding both sides under 37% from floor. Disney teams didn't play Saturday, so they should be rested.

Southern Illinois plays terrific defense; they beat Chattanooga 63-41 in first round, holding Mocs to 29.7% from floor, then in second round, they beat Miss State 63-49- they forced 47 TO's in two games. USC beat San Diego 60-50, Miami 57-53. Mayo is an NBA player; interesting game between younger talent vs an experienced mid-major.

      Rest of the Card

-- Portland beat up on Idaho State 76-52 yesterday, leading by 11 at half, now they face Oregon State squad that beat ISU on Friday by 56-41. Beavers beat Portland 65-48 last season (-7.5).
-- Penn State lost 74-67 to South Carolina, then 82-73 to Rider; they were -22/-11 on boards in two games. Central Florida, the local team, lost 76-68 to Villanova, 73-71 in OT to Kansas State.
-- Rider led NC State at half, lost 72-63, then they beat Penn St. 82-73; they're 17-38 from arc in two games. K-State lost 87-77 to George Mason, then beat UCF in OT 73-71, after blowing lead in second half.
-- South Carolina beat Penn State 74-67 Thursday, lost 63-61 to NC State Friday; SC is just 13-28 from line, going 2-9 in narrow loss to NCS. George Mason beat K-State by 10, then lost by 8 to Villanova, going just 8-23 from arc in second game.

-- Montana lost by 11 to Washington State, then beat Flyboys by hoop last night; they're expected to win Big Sky. MVSU lost by 18 Friday, by 45 last night. Playing third day in row isn't too good for them here.
-- Air Force was down 16 at half to Montana last night, lost by 2; their offense is hard to prepare for in less than 24 hours, but Washington State won first two games of this event by 18,45.

-- San Diego lost 60-50 to USC Thursday (was 27-23 at half) and got squashed 77-55 by South Alabama Friday, shooting 36% in game, -13 on boards. Irvine lost 68-53 to Miss State, then lost to hot-shooting Chattanooga squad 85-80 Friday.
-- South Alabama was just 8-21 from line in 64-59 loss to Miami Thursday; they waxed USD by 22 in next game (23-30 from line) Mocs were down double digits in second half Friday, got hot from arc and beat Irvine by 5, after losing 63-41 to the Salukis.
-- Miami led USC 33-29 at half Friday, but Mayo came through at end for Trojans, in 57-53 game; Red Hawks won opener by 5 over USA. Mississippi State beat Irvine by 15, lost 63-49 in the second round to Southern Illinois- they had 21 turnovers.

-- Siena beat Stanford, lost by just 9 at Syracuse; they like to go up and down, are pretty athletic, but they did lose 100-88 when they went to James Madison. Cornell also likes to run; they lost 102-89 when they went to Ohio U (+11).
-- Duke is back from Maui Classic, where they won for fourth time in row; theyre no match for Eastern Kentucky squad that tries to play like Beilein teams- they lost 76-56 at E. Tennessee, 64-50 at UAB.
-- Rutgers is struggling; they only beat Dartmouth 55-50 in last game, not a good sign for Big East team. St Peter's hasn't been good since Clark gruaduated two years ago; they lost by four to Lehigh, then beata Wagner by three.
-- Santa Clara has new coach, new system; they lost at Nevada by 13 (26-25 at half), then had good 72-57 win at Utah (up 29-27 at half). Sacramento State lost by 31 at K-State, by 13 at Pacific by 30 at San Francisco.
