Thursday's Games
Top Three Games
Kansas State lost seven guys from LY and its coach, but has a pair of super freshmen in Beasley/Walker (played in few games LY, but blew out his knee, is still considered a freshman). So far they beat on three stiffs, so well-drilled George Mason will be a big step up in competition. Patriots have all five starters back from 18-15 team that almost won CAA title game.
San Diego won by hoop at Hawai'i, lost by 11 to UNLV, and by five to San Diego State, both at home. USC lost to Mercer, but then went east and won 85-75 at South Carolina, as OJ Mayo is showing why his reputation preceded him to LA. Trojans have had injury issues, but are slowly getting healthier.
Western Kentucky will be team to follow come March, NCAAs time; Hilltoppers traveled lot farther than Gonzaga to get to this event, but Heytfeldt being hurt sets Bulldogs back. WKU has four starters back from LY's 22-win team. Gonzaga has just one senior on roster, but 6-10 freshman Daye is drawing raves. This could easily be preview of first round NCAA matchup.
Rest of the Card
-- South Carolina lost 85-75 at home to USC, after beating up on couple of stiff teams; Gamecocks have talented new transfers in backcourt. Penn State also beat two cupcakes; they're picked 6th in Big 11, lot higher than usual for them.
-- NC State just lost at home to New Orleans, as 17-point fave. Rider's Thompson is one of most unheralded players in nation. Broncs are picked 3rd in MAAC, have three starters back from LY, but only true PG is a freshman.
-- Central Florida is home team for this event; they're picked 7th in improved C-USA; Knights already beat Nevada, opening its new arena in Orlando, about 20 miles from this gym. Villanova has to get contributions from its incoming freshmen.
-- Mississippi State lost at home to Clemson last week, but they are picked 2nd in SEC West; they have four starters back from LY. Cal-Irvine upset Utah State at home last week, but lost to Nevada by 9- they're picked to finish sixth in Big West.
-- Southern Illinois won Disney event in Orlando this weekend last year; Salukis have three starters back from 29-7 team, are a favorite to win MVC. Chattanooga led 50-46 at halftime when it played at Indiana, but lost 99-79- they want to play fast.
-- South Alabama has new coach in Ronnie Arrow; they've got a senior backcourt like the one Arrow had last time he coached USA, back in early 90's. Miami, OH has three starters back from 18-13 team that made NCAAs last spring.
