        Hot Lines

        Wednesday, November 21

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets

Washington Wizards at Charlotte Bobcats (-5, 191)

The Wizards, winners of two consecutive road contests, should have Gilbert Arenas back in their lineup Wednesday after he missed Saturday’s game. Arenas is leading his team in scoring with more than 22 points per contest and is also registering more than two steals per outing.

Washington, 8-3 against the spread (ATS) in its last 11 road outings, has covered the spread in two of its last three road meetings with the Bobcats.

        Pick: Wizards +5

Golden State Warriors at Boston Celtics (-10, 214)

The Celtics, winners of eight of their first nine games, are coming off a narrow setback to the Orlando Magic. Boston fought back from a 19-point deficit but fell short of stealing the victory.

Boston, owner of the league’s most stifling defense, should respond with a strong performance against road-weary Golden State. The Warriors, losers of two of their last three against the Celtics, are 1-4 ATS on the road.

        Pick: Celtics -10

Atlanta Hawks at Miami Heat (-8 ½, 190)

Atlanta, loser of its first four road games, should get the winless monkey off its back against Miami.

Hawks athletic forward Josh Smith registered three blocks and two steals – just under his season average in both categories – in Saturday’s game against Milwaukee. Smith is also scoring more than 19 points per contest and should be a tough matchup for the aging Heat.

Miami, winless at home, is also 1-10 ATS in its last 11 home contests.

        Pick: Hawks +8 ½

Dallas Mavericks at Houston Rockets (N/A)

Houston, loser of four straight, could get a boost versus the Mavs. Rockets star Tracy McGrady, who is averaging more than 26 points per contest, is a game-time decision against Dallas. McGrady, who has missed the last two games, scored 35 points and added eight assists in the Rockets’ first meeting with the Mavericks.

His possible return is key to this game. The Rockets, 2-3 on the road, have lost two straight home outings without McGrady. They are undefeated at the Toyota Center with McGrady in their lineup, including an 89-90 SU and ATS victory over the defending champion Spurs.

        Pick: Rockets

New York Knicks at Detroit Pistons (-12, 193 ½)

The Pistons, following back-to-back road losses, should take out their anger on the struggling Knicks tonight. Detroit, 2-0 at home, is holding opponents to less than 95 points per contest on 43 percent shooting. The Pistons allowed more than 100 points in each of their last two road setbacks, but are limiting opponents to fewer than 85 points at the Palace.

The home team is 12-5 in the last 17 meetings between Detroit and New York.

        Pick: Pistons -12

Los Angeles Lakers at Milwaukee Bucks (N/A)

The Lakers, winners of eight of their last 10 meetings with the Bucks, take their stifling defense to Milwaukee. Los Angeles is forcing opponents to shoot less than 42 percent, something that should disrupt a Bucks offense which centers on jump shots.

L.A. has also covered the spread in three of its last five meetings against Milwaukee.

        Pick: Lakers

Toronto Raptors at Memphis Grizzlies (-2 ½, 213)

The Raptors, 3-1 outside Canada, are winless versus the Western Conference. Toronto has been inconsistent offensively, shooting an NBA second-best 42 percent from the three-point line, compared to a mediocre 44 percent from the field. Raptors star Chris Bosh, who is averaging less than 17 points per outing, is also shooting less than 41 percent, which is nine percent below his average from last year.

Toronto is 1-11-1 ATS in its last 13 meetings with Memphis.

        Pick: Grizzlies -2 ½

Indiana Pacers at New Orleans Hornets (N/A)

The Pacers, 1-3 on the road, could register back-to-back road victories for the first time this season against the potentially shorthanded Hornets. New Orleans could be without integral starters Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler as both players nurse leg ailments.

Indiana, winner of three of its last four games against the Hornets, is also 6-1 ATS in its last seven contests against Southwest Division opponents.

        Pick: Pacers

Cleveland Cavaliers at Minnesota Timberwolves (+4, 192 ½)

Cleveland should dominate the Timberwolves. The Cavaliers, winners of three straight over Minnesota, have covered the spread in two of their last three meetings.

LeBron James, who is leading the league in scoring with more than 29 points per outing, also filled the stat sheet in the Cavs’ last victory against Minnesota.

        Pick: Cavaliers -4

Orlando Magic at San Antonio Spurs (-5 ½, 189 ½)

The Magic, owners of a 7-0 road mark, should improve to 8-0 on the road tonight, against the Spurs. Orlando, 13-3 ATS in its last 16 road outings, has covered the spread in four of its last six meetings with San Antonio.

Magic center Dwight Howard, who is averaging more than 22 points and 14 rebounds per contest, holds an athletic edge over the Spurs’ Tim Duncan, which should give Orlando a significant advantage in the paint.

        Pick: Magic + 5 ½

Sacramento Kings at Phoenix Suns (N/A)

Sacramento, winless on the road, is not athletic enough to contain Phoenix’s high-octane assault.

The Kings, conceding more than 104 points per contest on 47 percent shooting, conceded 108 points to the struggling Timberwolves last Wednesday. Sacramento is also 1-4 ATS in its last five meetings with the Suns.

        Pick: Suns

New Jersey Nets at Portland Trail Blazers (N/A)

Portland, winless in its last four road games, should get back on track tonight versus the struggling Nets at the Rose Garden. The Blazers, 4-0 at home, have toppled elite teams such as the Pistons, Mavericks and Hornets in Portland. The Trail Blazers, averaging fewer than 94 points per contest on the season overall, are scoring five more points per outing when at the Rose Garden.

Portland is also perfect at home against the spread this year and 4-0 ATS in its last four games against the Nets in Portland.

        Pick: Blazers

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Clippers (N/A)

The Nuggets, winners of their last two road outings, have covered the spread in three straight contests against the Clippers. The success is thanks to a strong offense. Denver is averaging more than 109 points per contest on 47 percent shooting, and is also shooting the lights out from behind the arc.

The Nuggets are 3-2 ATS outside Colorado and 5-0 ATS in their last five outings overall.

        Pick: Nuggets

              College Basketball – Write up

              NCAAB
              Write-up

              Wednesday, November 21

              ----------------------------------------------------------------------

              Wednesday's College Basketball

Duke has 11-0 record in Maui, winning three times they entered field; they won first two games in this event easily, pounding Princeton, then easing by Illinois Tuesday. Marquette whacked Oklahoma State Tuesday, after struggling with Chaminade in a first round game- they beat Duke 73-62 (+5) on neutral court in Kansas City last season, in finals of that event.

Boston College beat Rhode Island 86-68 LY, but Rams are 5-0 this season, going 3-0 in tourney at Stetson, beating USF and UAB in process. BC is 3-0, winning by 6-10-17 points, but last win was vs Mercer team that won big at USC in their opener. BC is picked to finish 10th in ACC, URI 3rd in the Atlantic-14.

John Thompson III coaches Georgetown; his brother was Ball State's coach, until he quit/fired this summer, after lot of drama involving racism, NCAA violations. Ball State is bad team, 0-2, losing by 16 at home to Butler, then blowing 15-point halftime lead and losing. Hoyas are really good- this could be very ugly

Saint Louis nipped Missouri State 51-50 LY, on controversial finish where Bears should have won- that loss could have kept them out of NCAAs. Billikens are 4-1, beating four cupcakes and losing at Pitt. State routed NC-Greensboro squad that had already beaten Georgia Tech. Figures to be tense game.

Texas A&M has three starters back from 27-7 team, but coach is new; best team they've beaten is UTEP. This is first game out of Texas this season. Washington is also on road for first time and missing 3-point shooter Appleby; best team Huskies have beaten is Utah. Aggies picked #3 in Big12, Huskies #7 in Pac10

              Rest of the Card

-- Dayton lost by 11 at George Mason, after winning its opener by 4 over ETSU. Toledo got crushed by Old Dominion, after its 77-70 home loss to Vanderbilt and beating Missouri State by 4. -- Louisville lost C Padgett, maybe for season (knee); Cards are still loaded, but this hurts them inside. UNLV had good win at San Diego over weekend, is picked fourth in Mountain West.

-- New Mexico is playing better defense under Alford, beating stiffs by big margins. Hawai'i lost pair of close games at home to San Diego, Illinois, makes rare November trip to mainland.
-- Long Beach lost top nine scorers from LY; Pepperdine is also rebuilding, putting in a new system. 49ers won 95-90 LY, when they were loaded with athletes to attack Pepperdine's pressure.

-- LSU was trailing Chaminade at half Tuesday, rallied to win, a day after being down 21 to Oklahoma State, cutting lead to sis, but falling short. Arizona State got crushed by Illinois, won its second game by dispatching mediocre Princeton group.

-- Oklahoma State is 1-14 in its last fifteen games away from its home arena, and they almost blew 21-point lead in that win,. It is tough to endorse anyone in consolation game. Illinois really got outclasses by Duke last night; how is their confidence?

-- Ohio State, Syracuse both have lot of significant freshmen. Buckeyes have big guy (Koufos) while Orange has PG Flynn as their new leader. SU won nailbiter vs St Joe's that was helpful in developing a team. Both game on road for both sides.

-- Michigan got crushed by Georgetown in last game, but no Roy Hibbert for Butler squad that had great tournament run in November last year. Bulldogs already have pair of double digit road wins, so they're good again this season.

-- Eastern Washington has been travelling all over west coast, getting beat and cashing checks. Virginia Tech lost lot of its firepower from team that won game in NCAAs last year; tough to lay so many points with team travelling so far.

-- Manhattan lost 65-51 at Eastern Michigan in Bracket Buster game last winter; Jaspers lost in OT at Hofstra in last game, but seem to be improved. EMU is picked to finish 3rd MAC West.

-- Davidson's star G Curry has injured wrist that needs surgery, but he is going to play thru season; Wildcats hung tough in a loss at Chapel Hill. Western won at Detroit, lost close game at Oregon. This figures to be a pretty good game.

-- UAB not only went 0-3 in tourney last weekend, Delaney is lost for year (knee) so rough start for Blazers. Eastern Kentucky plays lot like West Virginia; they're picked 3rd in Ohio Valley.

-- Oklahoma was in New York last week, losing to Memphis and beating Gardner-Webb. Morehead State lost at Bowling Green by 16, at Houston by 29; they're picked in bottom half of OVC.

-- This might be pretty good Northern Arizona team; they hung within 10 points of Arizona in Tucson, but Kansas in Final Four type team. Jayhawks could be looking ahead to Arizona game, which is Sunday.

-- Fresno State lost at home to San Diego State ten days ago, had only one game since; they're picked 5th in mediocre WAC. Montana State lost 76-65 at UNLV in their only road game.

-- Pacific (-3) lost 74-72 in OT at Sacramento State LY; Pacific is better than LY, not sure Hornets are- they lost 94-63 at K-State, then went to San Francisco and lost 93-63 to Dons on Saturday

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL wagers

Atlanta Thrashers at Washington Capitals (-125, 5 ½)

These two Southeast division rivals are going in opposite directions. The underdog Thrashers are riding a three-game winning streak and have outscored their opponents 10-5 in the process. The Capitals have a league-low 13 points this season and have lost four consecutive games overall.

"We have to realize how desperate we are right now," Capitals forward Brooks Laich told the Associated Press. "We have to play every game like it's our last."

                          Pick: Thrashers +105

Florida Panthers at Columbus Blue Jackets (-150, 5 ½)

The Panthers end their three-game road trip in an unfamiliar spot, but a win isn't out of the question for Florida. The Panthers have just three wins in 12 attempts away from the Sunshine State, but they'll head into Columbus for the first time since 2002 and play a Blue Jackets team that has dropped six of its last seven contests.

One member of the Panthers who knows Columbus well is goalie Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun made 26 appearances against the Blue Jackets as a member of the Nashville Predators and earned 18 wins, including in victories in each of his last six outings against them.

                          Pick: Panthers +130

Anaheim Ducks at Dallas Stars (-135, 5)

The Ducks were blanked 5-0 by the Stars earlier this month, but they have certainly turned things around since then. Anaheim has responed by winning four its last five, which includes four wins in a row.

Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf has registered eight points in the last five games and received an added boost on Tuesday as he signed a five-year extension with the team he helped win the Stanley Cup this past June.

                          Pick: Ducks +115
