    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- UCLA never led until last 0:40 of game, but rallied to beat Michigan State 68-63 on neutral floor in Kansas City.

-- Freshman named Mills scored 37 points, as St Mary's got big upset win, knocking Oregon off 99-87 in Moraga.

-- Canisius lost by 11 to Navy last night; they lost previous game by 50+ points. Could be a long year for the Griffs.

-- Duke, Marquette both won impressively Tuesday, setting up excellent final in Maui Classic Wednesday night.

-- Tubby Smith's Minnesota Gophers won their first game on foreign soil. winning 68-58 at Iowa State. Good win.

-- Saturday here in Albany, they drew 6,700+ for Siena's win over Stanford in the afternoon, then another 4,200+ for the UAlbany-Columbia game. Two pretty good home teams.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13..........

If you don’t have at least a .500 record, you can’t get ranked.

      13) Cardinals-- Two-time MVP Warner has Cardinals at .500, which hasn't happened much to Big Red recently.

      12) Seahawks-- Hasselbeck is banged up, Alexander hasn't been playing, but Seattle still leads NFC West.

      11) Titans-- When Haynesworth comes back from his injury, Titans move way up this list. But until then.......

      10) Buccaneers-- Playing superior defense, and Garcia is not turning ball over much. Especially tough at home.

      9) Chargers-- Can beat anyone, including Patriots, but could lose to anyone, including Dolphins.

      8) Giants-- 7-3 is a very good record. They don't always look pretty, but they're more of team now than in recent years.

      7) Steelers-- Very shaky on road, which will keep them away from home in mid/late-January.

      6) Browns-- By far, most fun team in NFL to watch; their last three games were all decided by three points. Over is 9-1 in their games so far this season.

      5) Packers-- Were squeaking out wins early on, but now are pounding teams, and Favre is playing brilliantly. Playing now to get home field and bye in first round.

      4) Jaguars-- Underrated because they play in a small market, but this team defends well, runs ball and Garrard's return lifts them. Will be very tough out in first round of AFC playoffs.

      3) Cowboys-- Very explosive, especially in second half; they got waxed by Patriots, but were miles ahead of all their other opponents in second halves this season. Have to think that, at some point, Owens will get frsutrated and blow this up.

      2) Colts-- Health of their players will determine if they have a realistic shot at Patriots in January. If they're healthy, they'll have as good a shot as anyone.

      1) Patriots-- Very dominant team right now.

        College Football - Dunkel Index

        NCAAF
        Dunkel Index

        USC at Arizona State
Oregon's loss last week to Arizona has opened a lot of doors for both these teams. On the line is a shot at the Pac-10 title and for Arizona State at least, an outside shot at the BCS championship. ASU coach Dennis Erickson has led an impressive turnaround in a program that was just 7-6 (4-5 in conference play) last year and hasn't been to a Rose Bowl since 1997. The Sun Devils are coming off a much-needed bye week that has given QB Rudy Carpenter's thumb some time to heal. When healthy, Carpenter has put up big numbers, completing 63 percent of his passes for 2,528 yards and 20 TDs against only eight INTs. His injury has also forced ASU to look to its running game and Keegan Herring responded with 116 yards, including a 71-yard TD run, against UCLA two weeks ago. The comeback win over the Bruins on the road showed Arizona State hadn't thrown in the towel after losing an emotional game to Oregon. Now the emotion should be on their side in front of a home crowd on Thanksgiving against the reigning Pac-10 champs. ASU looks like a good underdog pick (+3) according to Dunkel ,which has the Sun Devils favored straight up by 4. Dunkel Pick: Arizona State (+3). Here are all of Thursday and Friday's games.

What bettors need to know: Southern California at Arizona State
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Southern California Trojans at Arizona State Sun Devils (+3 1/2)

                ASU smelling roses

Arizona State hasn't been to a Rose Bowl since 1997, but with two games to go they are in pole position to get there. The Sun Devils face defending Pac-10 champions USC on Thursday knowing that a win will guarantee them at least a share of the conference title and a bowl berth.

"I told them that I hoped that I could take them to places like this, where they would have this opportunity, and it's here," first-year head coach Dennis Erickson told The Associated Press. "It's going to be fun for them, and it's fun for me to watch them react to where they're at right now.

"Now, playing USC, I don't know how much fun that's going to be."

A win would not only put ASU in the Rose Bowl, but also keep it in the running for the national championship game. The Sun Devils are currently sixth in the BCS standings; a victory over USC could see them move up the list.

Arizona State's players are excited at the prospect.

"Fortunately for us, we're going to get a chance to be the national game on TV that day and play in front of pretty much the world, really, or the United States, actually," quarterback Rudy Carpenter said.

A loss wouldn't eliminate the Sun Devils from the Pac-10 title race, but they would need both USC and Oregon to lose again to keep them in contention.

                Trojans' recovery

An ugly five-game stretch in the middle of USC's season threatened to put it out of contention, but the Trojans have since bounced back to win two straight. The program now has a shot at a record sixth-consecutive Pac-10 title.

USC's problems started with a loss to 40-point underdog Stanford and continued with narrow wins over Washington and Arizona , teams the Trojans were expected to dominate. Then, a 24-17 loss to conference rivals Oregon seemed to signal the end of their season.

Injuries played a big part in both losses. As soon as the Trojans started to get fit, their performances improved. They got starting quarterback John David Booty back from a broken finger to play in the last two games (both wins), and four of their five starting offensive linemen also returned.

"We look better," USC coach Pete Carroll told The Oregonian. "We look more confident. We look stronger. We're playing faster. It's clear. We can see it. Where that might have happened in the middle of the year, that we kind of get going, it's happened a little later."

While that turnaround has come too late for USC to have full control over its destiny, it has come in time to leave it a chance at the title. The Trojans need to win their final two games over Arizona State and UCLA, and hope that Oregon drops one of its last two contests.

"I think we have had a lot of missed opportunities, a lot of turnovers and we haven't capitalized in certain positions," cornerback Terrell Thomas said. "But we're still the same football team. We're trying to finish out, so the world will know we're still USC. I think we will be the best team when it's all said and done."

                Hard hitter

USC tailback Chauncey Washington had the best outing of his career in the Trojans' last game, a 24-17 victory over California. He led his team with a career-high 220 yards and a touchdown, doubling his previous high of 119 yards set last year.

USC coach Pete Carroll says he will continue to give Washington the ball.

"We've been wanting Chauncey to be the energy of the offense," he told AP. "The last couple weeks, he's been feeling it. You could just tell he was on fire, and there's no way we should take the ball out of his hands."

Washington, who leads the team with 748 rushing yards and nine TDs, loves to wear down defenses with his physical play.

"I go out there and punish people," he told the Daily Trojan, USC's student paper. "I make people feel my pain without getting in trouble."

Washington says that hitting people with the force he does outside the stadium would probably get him arrested.

Last season, Washington was the difference in USC's 28-21 win over Arizona State. He gained 64 yards on 10 carries in the fourth quarter and provided the game-winning touchdown in an extremely close game. Carroll expects more of the same this week.

"He's in great shape for this late in the season," the coach said in the L.A. Times. "He's physically fit and really fast. It's not too much to expect him to play a big role in this game and do the same kinds of things."

                Head to head

The Trojans have won the last seven meetings against the Sun Devils by a combined score of 274-141, covering the spread in five of those games. But USC has struggled against ranked Arizona State teams, posting a 2-4 record against ASU squads inside the Top 25.

The over is 4-1 in the last five games between these teams in Arizona.

                  Dunkel Index

                  Green Bay at Detroit
The Lions have had chances to put themselves in a better position for the NFC wild card race, but have failed to capitalize in the last two weeks. Detroit suffered an ugly loss at Arizona in which the offense committed five turnovers (four by QB Jon Kitna) and had minus-18 yards rushing. They followed that up with an equally anemic effort at home last weekend against the Giants in which Kitna threw three more INTs. Now Detroit faces a Green Bay team that ranks fifth in the league in points allowed (15.9) and has ridden the arm of Brett Favre to the fourth-ranked offense (370.3 ypg). The Packers look like the pick to cover (-3) according to Dunkel, which has Green Bay favored by 6 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Green Bay (-3). Here are all of this week's picks.

Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions (FOX | 12:30 PM ET)
League insiders remain impressed with a very stout Green Bay defense that is only giving up 15 points per game but will be tested against the Lions offense that ranks 14th in the league. SLIGHT EDGE: PACKERS
League insiders believe that Green Bay’s fundamental matchup advantage on offense will be too much for Detroit to overcome. Detroit comes into this contest with one of the worst passing defenses in the league (ranked 30th in the NFL, allowing 258 yards per game), which will be a big problem against the NFL's second-ranked passing attack. EDGE: PACKERS
One team insider is classifying this contest as a must win for the Lions if they hope to make the playoffs. Detroit comes into this contest at 6-4 and cannot afford to lose because Arizona is right behind at 5-5, as the Lions have lost to both of their nearest Wild Card competitors. EDGE: LIONS
Green Bay has failed to cover in 11 of the past 12 times it has been favored against the Lions in Detroit.
Green Bay has been outscoring their opponents by a 27-15 average on the road this season where they are 4-0 SU & ATS.
Lions are 4-1 SU & 3-1-1 ATS at home this season
Packers are 13-1 SU & 11-2-1 ATS their last 14 games

New York Jets at Dallas Cowboys (CBS | 4:15 PM ET)
One league insider believes that this game could get very ugly as the Jets defense ranks 28th in the league, and they must try to find any way to stop the NFL's second-ranked offense. Although New York was able to stack the line to stop the run last weekend (allowing Pittsburgh 112 yards on just 3.4 yards per carry), Dallas has a very balanced attack, so the Jets won’t have the luxury of keying in on any particular run or pass. EDGE: COWBOYS
This is a very tough situational setting for Jets rookie quarterback Kellen Clemens to be making his road debut. BIG EDGE: COWBOYS
The Jets are 0-4 SU & 1-3 ATS on the road this season, giving up 27 points per game.
The OVER is 8-2 in the last 10 home games for Dallas.

Indianapolis Colts at Atlanta Falcons (NFL | 8:15 PM ET)
Some team insiders believe that the Colt’ might be in some trouble this season. The injury bug has hit Indianapolis hard this season as the team played without five starters last weekend: WR Marvin Harrison (knee), LT Tony Ugoh (neck), DT Raheem Brock (neck) and LBs Freddy Keiaho (ear) and Tyjuan Hagler (neck). The Colts also lost All-Pro DE Dwight Freeney (ankle) for the season the week before at San Diego. EDGE: FALCONS
Atlanta's search for a respectable quarterback will be the story again this weekend. The Falcons are off an embarrassing 31-7 home loss to Tampa Bay, and QB Byron Leftwich was nothing short of terrible, completing just 15 of 28 passes for 106 yards with two interceptions and two fumbles. Again Joey Harrington came off the bench to finish and will get the call as the starter this week. EDGE: COLTS
Similar to the Colts, the Falcons are also nursing many injuries, as DT Trey Lewis appeared to sustain a season-ending knee injury, and OT Todd Weiner aggravated his left knee, which already needed surgery this season. TE Dwayne Blakley (neck, head) and DT Rod Coleman (arm, hand) also went down. EDGE: COLTS
The UNDER is 5-0 in Indy's last 5 games.

NFL mismatches: Where to find the edge in Thursday’s games

If you are trying to find an edge for your Thanksgiving bets, look no further. The following is a selection of Thursday’s NFL games where mismatches in key areas could have a major impact on the outcome.

Packers QB Brett Favre vs. Lions’ pass defense

Brett Favre has sliced through every team he has faced this season and is second only to Tom Brady in passing yards (2,975) this season. The veteran QB seems certain to have another bumper day when he faces a Lions pass defense that ranks among the worst in the league.

Favre has rolled back the clock, throwing for more than 300 yards in six different games this season. In his most recent outing, the 38-year-old racked up 218 passing yards and three touchdowns in a 31-17 win over Carolina – Green Bay’s fifth straight victory.

The Lions’ biggest struggle this season has been defending the pass. They are giving up more than 257 yards per game in the air and their secondary shows no signs of improvement. Detroit has dropped its last two games, yielding 544 passing yards and five passing TDs in the process.

Green Bay is an 3 ½-point road favorite on Thursday.

Cowboys running back Marion Barber vs. Jets’ rush defense

Marion Barber leads the Cowboys with 610 rushing yards and six TDs this season. A Jets rush defense that is allowing more than 148 yards per game is unlikely to be able to deal with Barber’s strength and speed.

Barber’s best attribute is his versatility. As well as leading the team in rushing, he has clocked up 189 receiving yards and a receiving TD. He’s also returned three kicks for 58 yards and is averaging 4.84 yards per carry.

The Jets have the NFL’s 28th-ranked rush defense, a big reason they have lost nine of their 11 games this season. Their defense against the run has been severely weakened by season-ending injuries to starting linebackers Jonathan Vilma and Cody Spencer.

Despite a strong showing in its upset win over the Steelers on Sunday, New York has allowed six different running backs to rush for more than 100 yards this season.

Dallas is a 13 ½-point home favorite in his contest.

Colts receiver Reggie Wayne vs. Falcons’ pass defense

Reggie Wayne has been on fire in recent weeks, catching 35 passes for 576 yards and two touchdowns in the past five games. The All-Pro receiver is the main target of quarterback Peyton Manning and should continue to produce against the struggling Falcons this week.

Wayne is the third-ranked receiver in the league, with 945 yards and six touchdowns in 10 games. He has hit the century mark in passing yards in four games this season and is averaging more than 15 yards per reception.

The Falcons secondary did a decent job against the pass early in the season, but has since struggled. In the past five games Atlanta has allowed an average of 197 passing yards per game.

Indianapolis is an 11 ½-point favorite on the road.

                              New York at Detroit
The Knicks look bad both on the court and off right now. Stephon Marbury was back in the starting lineup last night, but that didn't add much value at all as New York was pounded at home by Golden State (108-82). The Knicks may actually welcome getting out of New York after listening to the boos rain down on them during the game. But Detroit will probably welcome them even more as the Pistons look to get back on track after dropping three of their last four on a five-game western road trip. This looks like a good opportunity for Detroit to get healthy and cover the line (-11) according to Dunkel, which has the Pistons favored by 18. Dunkel Pick: Detroit (-11). Here are all of today's games.
