        Tuesday's College Basketball

        Top Three Games

Illinois came out and led Arizona State 20-0 last night, so they had chance to rest starters, just like Duke did after their win vs Princeton (led 33-7 at one point). Duke has 10-0 record in Maui, winning all three times they entered field. Illinois is picked 7th in Big 11, wit three starters back from LY's 23-win team.

UCLA will be really good when Collison gets healthy and they have a superior PG; last night, they staggered thru 28-18 first half vs Maryland, won game 71-59. Michigan State handled the Missouri pressure well early in game, then hung on for dear life at end, beating spunky Tigers, 86-83. Senior G Neitzel gives the Spartans slight edge, especially with Collison out.

Marquette struggled little bit with Chaminade Monday, taking 74-63; they have three terrific perimeter guys, have five starters back from LY, are picked 10th in country. Oklahoma State got a rare road win yesterday, getting up by 20+ pts over LSU, then holding off late Tiger rally. OSU has nine first-year players.

Tubby Smith takes his Minnesota Gophers on road for the first time, visiting Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum. ISU has freshman PG and thin backcourt. Gophers haven't played for ten days since beating Army in opener- they have almost whole team from LY, but they were lousy last year.

Oregon coach Kent came to Eugene from St Mary's; he brings his Ducks to Moraga here, to face Gael squad that has four of its starters back from LY, but the new starter is the PG, so that is problem vs athletic Duck guards. Oregon has four starters back from 29-win squad that lost in regional final to Florida.

        Rest of the Card

-- Florida State is playing for fourth time in five days after 68-67 loss to South Florida Sunday; State went 1-2 in tourney, losing two games by total of five points.

-- Indiana trailed Chattanooga at half in opener but won by 20; Hoosiers are picked 9th in country. NC-Wilmington won in OT vs Charleston, then lost 89-73 to Illinois State in last game Sun.

-- Northern Illinois is terrible, losing so far by 30-15-10-20 pts-- they were down 43-21 to Salukis at half Saturday. Indiana State has new coach; they come home after losing pair of road tilts.

-- Middle Tennessee got waxed 83-52 by Tennessee LY; Vols could be looking ahead to game vs West Va Friday. MTSU lost two of three in opening tournament, with two losses by 1,2 pts.

-- Dartmouth lost by 15 at home to James Madison Saturday; in only road game, they lost at Air Force 67-38 (+14). Rutgers got spanked by rebuilding Florida team in their last game Saturday.

-- Virginia is back home after big win at Arizona Saturday; Cavs are picked 6th in ACC, with three starters back from 21-11 team. Drexel has lot of talented, but inexperienced newcomers.

-- Valparaiso is picked 6th in first year in 10-team Horizon; they all five starters back from 16-15 club (9-5 in MCC). Vanderbilt is 2-0, beating Austin Peay 81-67, winning 77-70 at Toledo.

-- Rice lost at home to pressing Duquesne squad Saturday, has to face Princeton-style Richmond squad that was down by just point at half in Memphis, then lost next game to Norfolk State.

-- Arkansas State (+9) lost first road game 75-59 at Tulsa squad that had just lost to Hampton; ASU lost 86-60 to Memphis last year. Calipari's biggest problem this season is keeping his guys from getting bored in between big-name opponents.

-- San Francisco lost by 16 at Oklahoma, then beat Sacramento State by 30 Saturday. UCSB went to USF last year and beat the Dons 74-69 (+2). Gauchos have 4 starters back from 18-11 team.

-- Stanford was just back east, losing at Siena Saturday, after a 71-59 win at Northwestern; Cardinals has experienced team,. is hosting Yale, usually a spunky dog. Bulldogs already covered in an 89-80 loss at UMass (+13).

-- Arizona State runs Princeton offense, so this could be one of lowest-scoring games all season; ASU was last D-I team to tip off, and it showed, as Sun Devils fell behind Illinois 20-0 early.

-- Missouri plays hard for 40 minutes; they lack shooting they are going to need to be at highest level of Big 12, but effort is there. Maryland struggled to beat two stiff teams, then looked bad in last night's loss to UCLA.

-- Seton Hall has already needed OT to dispose of Monmouth, Robert Morris, not exactly great harbinger of Big East success. Loyola Md has four starters back from 18-13 club that is picked for second place in fast-paced MAAC.

-- Iona got crushed at North Carolina Sunday; Old Dominion lost by 13 at Clemson, after crushing Toledo Friday. Monarchs lost three starters from LY, still expected to contend in CAA.

-- Buffalo (-9) beat Niagara 74-62 LY; these are local schools, so rivalry is building. Bulls just beat South Florida at home, a good win for Buffalo. Eagles lost four starters from LY, but did beat Central Michigan in opener.

-- Georgia has four starters back from 19-14 team, is expected to make NCAAs this year. Elon hammered Georgia State by 21 at home Saturday, after losing 69-64 in opener at Virginia Tech.

-- Citadel has been getting crushed by USC and South Carolina, now they get closer to own level vs Penn squad that lost in OT to Drexel, then lost 89-68 at Loyola, 80-65 to Howard.

-- Samford runs Princeton stuff, Towson likes to play fast, so it is an interesting contrast; first road game for 1-1 Towson squad that beat Loyola by lost by 14 at home to Bucknell last week.

-- Evansville has new coach, is 0-2 after losing 50-49 at home to Samford, then 60-47 at home to Butler. SE Missouri lost 65-45 a year ago at Evansville; they lost 90-59 to Xavier, 90-71 at Ill. State, MVC rival of Evansville's.

-- This is already sixth game for Utah State club that lost 83-69 at Cal Poly, 70-51 at Irvine, couple of its former Big West rivals. Austin Peay is long way from home after beating Belmont, the same team that won at Alabama Monday night.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL wagers

Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs (-160, 6)

Toronto looks to ride the momentum to another win against a reeling Bruins team following a victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Boston has lost five of its last seven games and four straight on the road. The Bruins are coming off a heated 7-4 loss to the Montreal Canadiens in which Boston allowed 52 shots on net.

                  Pick: Leafs –160

Vancouver Canucks at Edmonton Oilers (+110, 5)

The Canucks are on a roll and quickly moving up the Northwest Division standings. They have won five of their last six games and are now 8-0-1 in divisional play. They owe a lot of thanks to All-Star goalie Roberto Luongo who is 5-0-1 with a sparkling 1.47 goals against average in his last six starts. That one loss did, however, come at the hands of the Oilers in a 1-0 shootout loss. Edmonton has lost six of its last eight games overall and four straight at home.

                  Pick: Canucks –130

Colorado Avalanche at Calgary Flames (-130, 5 1/2)

After starting the year as one of the more potent offenses in the league, Calgary has come back to Earth. The normally low-scoring Flames have been just that recently, failing to score more than three goals in the last eight games. In six of those eight games they scored just two goals or fewer. Colorado is having trouble finding the back of the net lately too, losing three of its last four while producing just one goal in each of the losses.

                  Pick: Under 5 1/2

                    Austin Peay at Utah State
Utah State returns only four lettermen this season and the inexperience was showing on its recent road trip as the Aggies dropped all three games (at Weber State, Cal Poly and UC-Irvine) by an average margin of 13.33 points. They return home tonight, but face a tricky opponent in Austin Peay. The Governors return all five starters from a team that went 21-12 last season and came within a basket of making the NCAAs. They looked strong in beating Belmont by 15 (71-56) their last time out with Ohio Valley offensive player of the year Drake Reed leading the way with 18 points and 11 boards. The underdog Governors (+3) look primed to pull the upset according to Dunkel, which has Austin Peay favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Austin Peay (+3). Here are all of today's games.

                      Middle Tennessee State at Troy
The Trojans are in control of their own destiny in the Sun Belt as they host Middle Tennessee State tonight. A win over MTS and Florida Atlantic the following week will send Troy back to the New Orleans Bowl for the second consecutive year. The Trojans have had a 10-day layoff since their last game, which will help senior QB Omar Haugabook (oblique) get healthy. Haugabook has lived up to his preseason offensive player of the year hype by accounting for 25 of the team's 36 TDs. The Trojans showed how tough they can be at home when they beat Oklahoma State by 18 (41-23) in Week 3. Against at Middle Tennessee team coming off a home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette (34-24), Troy looks like a good pick to cover (-11 1/2) the line according to Dunkel, which has the Trojans favored by 20. Dunkel Pick: Troy (-11 1/2).
