Pick 'n' roll: Sunday's best NBA bets

      Golden State at Toronto Raptors (-5 1/2, 218 1/2)

Golden State shooting guard Stephen Jackson, who missed the first seven outings due to a suspension, should be back in the lineup Sunday. The Warriors are 1-7 straight up (SU) and 2-5 against the spread (ATS) without Jackson.

Baron Davis, who is leading the Warriors in scoring (24.9), assists (9.4) and steals (1.7), registered his fifth double-double in Friday’s 122-117 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Golden State also has the league’s most potent offense, averaging more than 109 points per contest on 46 percent shooting.

The Raptors, owners of a meager 2-3 SU home record, are scoring less than 100 points per contest on 44 percent shooting. They are also allowing their opponents to shoot above 44 percent from the field.

The Warriors are also 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings with the Raptors.

      Pick: Golden State +5 1/2

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic (Not yet released)

The undefeated Celtics face their toughest challenge Sunday.

The Celtics, owners of the leagues stingiest defense, are averaging more than 107 points per game on a league-best 50 percent shooting. Boston is also shooting 39 percent from the three-point line.

Kevin Garnett, who is leading the Celtics in three statistical categories, registered his seventh double-double in Friday’s narrow victory over the Miami Heat. Paul Pierce is leading the Celtics in scoring with more than 22 points per outing.

The Magic are 2-2 both SU and ATS at home. Though they are averaging more than 100 points per contest, they are shooting a meager 45 percent from the field. Orlando is also shooting a mediocre 74 percent from the free-throw line.

      Pick: Celtics

Detroit Pistons at Sacramento Kings (Not yet released)

The Pistons, losers of two of their last three, could once again be without starters Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess. Both players missed Friday’s 103-91 setback to the Los Angeles Lakers and are questionable Sunday.

The Pistons, restricting opponents to 43 percent shooting, are averaging 100 points per game on 46 percent shooting from the field. They are also shooting above 36 percent from the three-point line. Richard Hamilton, leading the team in scoring, is also averaging more than five assists per outing.

The Kings, yielding more than 105 points per game, are averaging less than 98 points per contest. Sacramento also let the struggling New York Knicks score 118 points in Friday’s 123-118 victory.

      Pick: Pistons

Chicago Bulls at Los Angeles Lakers (-4 1/2, 195 1/2)

The Bulls are shooting a horrendous 39 percent from the field and less than 30 percent from the three-point line. Fourth-year guard Ben Gordon, the Bulls’ leading scorer, is also shooting an atrocious 37 percent from the field.

The Lakers, winners of two straight outings, are averaging more than 103 points per contest on 46 percent shooting. They are also confining their opponents to less than 43 percent shooting from the field.

      Pick: Lakers

            NHL – Matchup Notes
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Sunday's key NHL matchup notes

            Detroit at Columbus (+120, 5)

The Red Wings hope to avoid losing four straight games in regulation for the first time in nearly nine years when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday night at Nationwide Arena.

            Colorado at Minnesota (-125, 5 1/2)

Minnesota beat the Avalanche 3-2 at home on Oct. 21, but has lost the last two meetings - both on the road. Colorado beat the Wild 4-2 last Sunday behind two goals from Paul Stastny and 25 saves from Peter Budaj.

            Calgary at Vancouver (-145, 5)

Vancouver is 7-0-1 within its division while 2-8-0 against all other teams. The only NHL club yet to lose in regulation to a division opponent, the Canucks' only blemish in those contests is a 1-0 shootout defeat Wednesday to Edmonton.

              Golden State at Toronto (-5 1/2, 218 1/2)
These teams split two meetings last season with the home club winning each game. Chris Bosh had 23 points and 22 rebounds in the one game he played against Golden State.

              Boston at Orlando
The Magic won three of four games against the Celtics last season, including both contests at Amway Arena, where the Celtics have dropped four in a row since Nov. 29, 2004.

              Detroit at Sacramento
The Pistons and Kings (3-6) split two meetings last season, with each winning at home. Detroit has won four of the last five in the series after losing 11 of the previous 12 matchups.

              Chicago at L.A. Lakers (-4 1/2, 195 1/2)
Bryant is averaging 25 points in 18 career games against the Bulls, but has averaged just 20 in his last three since scoring 43 in a 96-93 home loss against them on Nov. 20, 2005. The Lakers have won eight of 10 against the Bulls in Los Angeles.

Sunday's key NCAAB Top 25 matchup notes

Jackson State at No. 6 Louisville
This is the second of five games in eight days for Louisville (1-0), which began its season - and the invitational - with a 104-69 rout of Hartford at home on Saturday.

                Longwood at No. 8 Indiana
Longwood is 0-4 against ranked opponents, but hasn't played one since losing 90-77 to then-No. 4 Villanova on Dec. 10, 2005.

                Bucknell at No. 23 Villanova
The 23th-ranked Wildcats look to make it seven straight wins over the Bison when the teams meet Sunday at the Pavilion.

VCU vs No. 18 Arkansas (-7)
The 18th-ranked Razorbacks look to bounce back from a sloppy upset loss when they face Virginia Commonwealth in the consolation game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Sunday.

Iona at No. 1 North Carolina (-34)
North Carolina leads 2-1 in the all-time series with Iona, but the Gaels won 65-56 on Dec. 27, 2002 in the most recent meeting. That was the last time Iona defeated a ranked opponent, having since lost its only three tries.

                Arkansas-Monticello at No. 16 Texas
Texas held its first two opponents under 50 points for the first time since 1952, and has not opened a season allowing 50 or less in three straight games since 1947 when the team did it five straight times.

New Orleans at No. 22 N.C. State
The Privateers, who are opening their season with three straight road games, lost 92-58 to N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. on Nov. 17, 2004, in the only other meeting between the teams.

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL wagers

Detroit Red Wings at Columbus Blue Jackets (+120, 5)

The Wings are expected to turn to backup Chris Osgood tonight against Columbus. Starting goalie Dominik Hasek is struggling and Osgood has been spectacular this year, going 8-1-0 with a 1.58 goals against average. Osgood is 11-5-3 with a 2.21 goals-against average in his career against the Blue Jackets. Detroit has won three straight and five of its last six against the Jackets.

                  Pick: Red Wings -140

Colorado Avalanche at Minnesota Wild (-125, 5 1/2)

The Avalanche have been dominant within their division this season, going 7-3 with two victories against the Wild. Peter Budaj should be back between the pipes tonight after Jose Theodore allowed five goals on 15 shots before being replaced in a 6-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Friday. Budaj is 7-3 on the season and was in nets for both victories against Minnesota this year.

                  Pick: Avalanche +105

Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks (-145, 5)

Tonight’s matchup between the Flames and Canucks features two of the world’s best goalies in Miikka Kiprusoff and Roberto Luongo. Both stoppers got off to slow starts this season but seem to be turning things around. Their play has led to profits for under bettors. Calgary has played over the total just once in its last seven games while Vancouver has busted the total just twice in its last 11.

                  Pick: under 5

                        Winthrop vs. Georgia Tech
Few teams suffered more losses than Winthrop in the off-season. Gone are head coach Gregg Marshall, who left for Wichita State, and three starters as well as back-up point guard De'Andre Adams, who was tragically killed in an auto accident. The expectation is that the Eagles will be down this year, but that could prove erroneous for a team that will start four seniors. That experience looked solid in a 72-58 win over Illinois-Chicago in the opening round of the Paradise Jam. The Eagles are back on the court today against a Georgia Tech team that hasn't looked too sharp at the outset, including an ugly 83-74 loss to UNC Greensboro at home. Winthrop looks like a good underdog pick (+3 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Eagles favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Winthrop (+3 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                              Chicago at LA Lakers
The Bulls finally got a win last night against the sliding Clippers, but should face a stiffer challenge from the Lakers tonight. LA handed Detroit a 103-91 defeat on Friday night despite getting only 19 points from Kobe Bryant. It was a nice sign for Phil Jackson's club that they can win even when they aren't getting the typical output from Bryant, who is averaging 27.4 points per game. The return of Lamar Odom certainly has helped as he has averaged 16.3 points over four games with the Lakers going 3-1 over that span. Los Angeles looks like the pick to cover (-4 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Lakers favored by 10 1/2. Dunkel Pick: LA Lakers (-4 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
