Pick 'n' roll: Today's best NBA bets

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks (-3, 186 1/2)

Home or away, the Spurs' focus is on defense.

San Antonio has the stingiest defense in the NBA, allowing less than 90 points per outing. The Spurs held Lakers star Kobe Bryant to a meager 18 points - 12 points under his season average - en route to a 107-92 win over Los Angeles on Tuesday. They are also limiting their opponents to 43 percent shooting from the floor and 31 percent from behind the arc.

Dallas is averaging more than 100 points per contest and is shooting a stunning 47 percent from the field. The Mavericks are also shooting above 36 percent from the three-point line. Dallas has only played against three teams with winning records, including the mediocre Cleveland Cavaliers and Portland Trailblazers.

The Spurs have won four straight games and are 7-1 straight up (SU). They are also 4-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last five games after a SU win. The road club is also 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings between the Spurs and Mavericks.

    Pick: Spurs +3

Chicago Bulls at Phoenix Suns (-7 1/2, 203)

Bulls coach Scott Skiles has hinted at inserting forward Andres Nocioni into his staring lineup against the sizzling Suns.

News flash, Scott: It's not going to make a difference.

Chicago has been atrocious on offense. The Bulls rank second-last in the league in scoring (86.5), field-goal percentage (38.1), and three-point field-goal percentage (26.4). They have also struggled defensively, allowing 95 points per contest on 43 percent shooting. They also allowed more than 100 points in an embarrassing 101-71 setback to the Toronto Raptors on Saturday.

The Suns are averaging more than 100 points per showing and are shooting an exceptional 46 percent. Former MVP Steve Nash is leading the Suns in scoring with 20.6 points per outing. Six other players are also averaging double-figure points, including Leandro Barbosa (19.1), Shawn Marion (17.2) and Amare Stoudamire (15.6).

The favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings between the Bulls and Suns.

    Pick: Suns -7 1/2

            Week 12

            Oregon at Arizona
The Ducks face a tough trip to the desert against a team that knocked them off last year in Eugene. Arizona snapped a six-game losing streak in the series last year and held QB Dennis Dixon to just 88 yards while picking off three of his passes en route to a 37-10 win. But this Oregon team looks to be much better prepared tonight as the Duck offense has averaged 42.8 points and 510.5 yards per game. Dixon's play is a big reason. The Heisman candidate provides a dual threat that has seen him throw for over 2,000 yards and 20 TDs while running for 549 yards and another eight scores. Oregon's defense has risen to the occasion in big games, holding USC to its lowest point total of the season and recording nine sacks against Arizona State. Arizona's offense should test the Ducks with QB Willie Tuitama throwing for 851 yards and eight TDs in his last two outings. But the defense has given up an average of over 27 points per game and has allowed three Pac-10 teams (Washington, Cal and Washington State) to top 40 already. With OU's offense running at full throttle, the Ducks should survive this trip and cover the line (-11) according to Dunkel, which has Oregon favored by 18. Dunkel Pick: Oregon (-11). Here are all of this week's picks.

              Week 11

              Chicago at Seattle
The on-again, off-again saga of Rex Grossman appears to be on again as the much-criticized QB came off the bench last week and led the Bears to a win over the Raiders. It likely saved the Bears season -- at least for the moment -- and set up a showdown for this weekend in Seattle. These two team met twice last year with the Bears winning both times, the first during the regular season at home (37-6) and the second in the divisional playoff (27-24). But it is Seattle that comes in with the better record at this point and in first place in the division, while the Bears are likely scratching for a wild card bid. The difference between the two teams doesn't look to be that great, though. Four of Seattle's five wins have come against losing teams (Cincinnati, St. Louis and San Francisco twice), while the Bears have actually played better ball on the road (3-2 record) than at Soldier Field (1-3) with notable victories at Philadelphia and Green Bay. Lovie Smith is sticking with Grossman this week looking for a little of last season's magic. The should make for a good underdog pick (+6) according to Dunkel, which has Chicago favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Chicago (+ Here are all of this week's picks.

NBA today - Thursday, November 15

                SCOREBOARD
                Thursday, Nov. 15
San Antonio at Dallas (8 p.m. EST). The Spurs, winners of four straight, take on the Mavericks, who are unbeaten at home.

                STARS
                Wednesday

-Dwight Howard, Magic, had 35 points and 16 rebounds in Orlando's 117-116 overtime victory over Cleveland.

-Joe Johnson, Hawks, scored 34 points, had 10 assists and five rebounds in Atlanta's 117-109 victory over Charlotte.

-Gilbert Arenas, Wizards, had 30 points, 11 assists and six rebounds to lead Washington to a 103-90 win over Indiana.

-Rashad McCants, Timberwolves, scored a career-high 33 points on 13-for-22 shooting in Minnesota's first victory this season, 108-103 over Sacramento.

                CRUISING

Boston routed the New Jersey Nets 91-69 Wednesday night to improve to 7-0, their best start since they opened 10-0 in 1972-73. The Celtics' best start was 14-0 in 1957-58.

                SNAPPED

Chris Wilcox scored 20 points, Damien Wilkins added 19 and the SuperSonics spoiled Dwyane Wade's return to the Heat lineup by beating Miami 104-95 Wednesday night - Seattle's first win in nine games this season.

                DEBUTS

Dwyane Wade scored 15 points in 25 minutes on 5-for-9 shooting in his season debut, in Miami's 104-95 loss to Seattle on Wednesday night. The Heat were down by 23 early in the fourth quarter, before an 18-3 run led by Wade made things interesting. Miami is now 0-4 at home for the second time in franchise history. ... Ron Artest returned from his seven-game suspension with 17 points and six assists in Sacramento's 108-103 loss to Minnesota. The Kings have lost all five of their road games.

                WINLESS

The Detroit Pistons improbably came back from a 22-point deficit to beat the winless Golden State Warriors 111-104 Wednesday night. The Warriors remained the NBA's only winless team at 0-6.

                INJURED

Houston guard Tracy McGrady is expected to miss about a week after straining his right elbow in a 93-90 loss to the Lakers on Wednesday night. The 6-foot-8 McGrady, taken to a hospital for tests, was hurt trying to swat the ball away from Luke Walton in the final minute of the second quarter. McGrady's arm hit Walton's arm and snapped backward. McGrady was the NBA's leading scorer coming into the game, has been plagued by injuries the last two seasons, mostly to his back. He missed 11 games last season, seven because of back spasms.

                FINED

The New York Knicks fined Stephon Marbury more than $180,000 after he blew off Tuesday night's game against Phoenix. According to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, players are docked 1/110th of their salaries for a missed game without a reasonable excuse. With Marbury scheduled to earn $20.1 million this season, that would be about $182,800. Marbury didn't start in the Knicks' 84-81 loss to the Clippers on Wednesday night, but he entered the game late in the first quarter and finished with 13 points.

                STRONG IN DEFEAT

LeBron James scored 39 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and dished out 14 assists in Cleveland's 117-116 loss to Orlando. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, James is the first player to record that many points, assists and rebounds in a game since Wilt Chamberlain in 1968. ... Yao Ming had 26 points and 13 rebounds in Houston's 93-90 loss to the Lakers. ... Gerald Wallace and Jason Richardson each scored 27 points but Charlotte fell to Atlanta 117-109. ... Baron Davis had 29 points and 10 assists for Golden State, in a 111-104 loss to Detroit.

                SPEAKING

''Unless you feel like you have something at stake or something to lose as a player, then things won't change. If you don't feel like the Heat mean something to you ... you have to have a real meeting with yourself about what you care about. I don't see a team that really feels like they have anything at stake here. They come in, they play, they get beat, they go home, they go out into the night.'' - Miami coach Pat Riley after the Heat's 104-95 loss to Seattle on Wednesday. Miami is now 0-4 at home for the second time in franchise history.

                        Hot Lines

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets

Buffalo Sabres at Ottawa Senators (-200, 6)

Jason Spezza will return to the Senators lineup tonight after missing six games with a groin injury. His addition can only bolster an already powerful Ottawa offense.

The Senators, in terms of goals scored, rank in the top five of the league on both offense and defense. They are tied with Colorado for the most wins on home ice and will go for their league-leading 15th win tonight against Buffalo.

The Sabres find themselves in the NHL cellar with only 13 points and tied with the Washington Capitals for last place.

                        Pick: Senators -200

San Jose Sharks at Phoenix Coyotes (+105, 5 1/2)

The Sharks have beaten up on the Coyotes this year, outscoring them a combined total of 9-1 in their last two meetings.

But that doesn't mean tonight's game will be a high-scoring affair. The Sharks should be tired after coming off a 4-3 overtime victory against Dallas late last night.

The under is 4-0 in San Jose's last four games when it has played the night before and 4-1-1 in its last six games overall.

These two teams have also played under the total in seven of the last 11 meetings.

                        Pick: under 5 1/2

Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers (+130, 5 1/2)

As if the Oilers didn't already have trouble scoring goals.

Tonight they face Niklas Backstrom. The Minnesota goalie owns a daunting 6-0-0 record against them, with three shutouts and a stingy 0.67 goals against average.

Backstrom should keep the Oilers at the bottom of the league. Edmonton is second-to-last in scoring and averaging just over two goals per game.

The Wild have won seven of their last eight games against the Oilers and eight of 12 at Rexall Place. These two teams have played under a total of five goals in four of their last six meetings. Tonight's total of 5 1/2 is the highest they've faced in 10 meetings.

                        Pick: Wild -150, under 5 1/2

                          Chicago at Phoenix
While Steve Nash remains the focus of the Suns' lineup, it was the absence of Amare Stoudemire early that led to Phoenix' shaky start. But Stoudemire looks to be healthy again after off-season knee surgery and the result has the Suns on a three-game winning streak. Stoudemire was his old self in their most recent win over New York (113-102), finishing with 26 points and 12 boards. Grant Hill also had his best game (21 points) since coming over from Orlando. That Phoenix is rounding into shape is not good news for the struggling Bulls. Perhaps the weight of expectations is weighing on Scott Skiles' young club, but Chicago has looked bad in dropping five of its first six. The Bulls are coming off their worst game of the season in a 101-71 home loss to Toronto on Saturday. It doesn't look to get any better in Phoenix, making the Suns a good pick (-8) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Phoenix favored by 12. Dunkel Pick: Phoenix (-8). Here are all of today's games.

                              Gardner-Webb vs. Connecticut
Gardner-Webb became the Appalachian State of the college basketball season with its 16-point win at Kentucky on November 7. While the Bulldogs were only 9-21 last year, they did return four starters, including guard Grayson Flittner, who is leading the team along with forward Thomas Sanders in scoring (18.0 ppg). The win propelled Gardner-Webb to the semifinals of 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in New York tonight against UConn. The Huskies looked sloppy in an opening-night win over lower-rated Morgan State (69-65) before bouncing back with a more-convincing win over Buffalo (82-57). Much like last year, Jim Calhoun's team looks to be up and down this year and could have trouble with an experienced club that is playing with some confidence right now. The Bulldogs look like a good underdog pick (+14) according to Dunkel, which has UConn favored by only 10. Dunkel Pick: Gardner-Webb (+14). Here are all of today's games.

                                Minnesota at Edmonton
Injuries to Minnesota's top line of Marian Gaborik, Wes Walz, and Pavol Demitra have hamstrung the Wild, who are only 2-6-1 since the trio was sidelined. The road has been especially hard as the Wild have gone five straight road contests without a win. Even Edmonton (7-10-1) doesn't look easy right now, especially after the Oilers won their second straight in a shootout at Vancouver on Wednesday. Edmonton looks like a good home underdog pick (+130) tonight according to Dunkel, which has the Oilers favored straight up by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: Edmonton (+130). Here are all of today's games.
