Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) Teams fire coaches too quickly; Bill Walsh was 8-24 in his first two years with 49ers; Dick Vermeil was 9-23 in first two seasons with Rams; both won Super Bowl in their third year. If the Rams pull the plug on Scott Linehan (9-17), they're not giving him a fair chance to succeed, simple as that.

      12) Kentucky is winning with Rich Brooks, after almost firing him; Notre Dame ran Ty Willingham off, but Charlie Weis has the Irish 1-9 and sinking fast. College coaches especially are in need of 4-5 years to establish their program, and win, since most college players redshirt their first year in school.

      11) If you like to read about college football recruiting, then the book Meat Market is right up your alley; it is all about a recruiting season with the Ole Miss Rebels and Ed Orgeron, one of the best recruiters in college football. Good stuff.

      10) Red Sox, A's are opening 2008 regular season in Japan, for some ridiculous reason; despite Red Sox having Matsuzaka, Okajima on their side, two former Japanese stars, games are Oakland home games. If Boston wanted to go over there so freakin' bad, couldn't they have given up a home game too? Like anyone over there is going to root for the A's.

      9) Syracuse hoop fans need to stop crying about being left out of LY's NCAA tournament; the system is fair. If you want to get in the tournament, don't lose home games to Bucknell, Oklahoma State and Drexel, all before New Year's. And while you're at it, Syracuse, how about a road game now and then? When they visit Virginia Dec 5, it'll be their first true road tilt out of conference in ten freakin' years!!!!

      8) That said, gotta love Syracuse freshman Johnny Flynn, a spunky little PG who had the onions to nail 22-footer to win St Joe's game, when he hadn't scored hoop, up to that point. Flynn had been 6-7 from arc the night before.

      7) Atlanta Falcons aren't good, but they have a terrific ratio on turnovers, with 17 takeaways, five giveaways in their last six games. In their last six games, Atlanta had positive ratio in all six, and that doesn't happen for too many NFL teams.

      6) Good news for drug dealers in south Florida- NFL has let Ricky Williams back into the league. Dolphins are 0-9, so it stands they'll take a shot with him, but his odds can't be real good to stay clean. We wish him well in his recovery.

      5) Former 49er RB Roger Craig has son playing hoops for the Texas Tech Red Raiders and fun-loving coach Bobby Knight, whose Red Raiders lost their opener at Sam Houston, 56-54.

      4) Imagine what a fun bus ride that must be, going from Sam Houston back to Lubbock, with Robert M. Knight, after they lost to freakin' Sam Houston State. No thanks.

      3) You could go into any YMCA in America, take three guys off the hoop court, put them in suits, send them on a train to Manhattan, and they could run the Knicks better than nitwit Isiah Thomas. How this guy still has a job is amazing.

      2) Last time Michigan, Ohio State both came into this rivalry game off a loss was back in 1959, right before I was born.

      1) This Saturday used to be one of 10 best sports days of the whole year-- Rivalry Saturday, with almost all rivalry games played-- USC-UCLA, Clemson-South Carolina, Georgia Tech-Georgia, Oregon-Oregon State.......now, with season stretched out and conference tournament games more important than rivalry games, there aren't too many big games being played this weekend. Better or worse? Just the way it is now.

#2 Oregon Ducks at Arizona Wildcats (ESPN | 9:00 PM)

The No. 2 Oregon Ducks travel to Arizona to take on the Wildcats in a PAC-10 showdown. Oregon's QB Dennis Dixon (sprained knee) is expected to start Thursday night, and the Heisman Trophy candidate has thrown for 2.074 yards with 20 touchdowns. Dixon has led this Oregon Ducks team to four straight victories, making them the No. 2 team in the country and a chance at the national title game. "When you start thinking about a national championship, you can get ahead of yourself," Oregon CB Walter Thurmond said. "We don't want to do that as we have to beat Arizona." EDGE: OREGON
Oregon QB Dennis Dixon and the nation's fifth-ranked offense are averaging 41.7 points during their recent four-game winning streak, and 50 points per game overall on the road. Arizona's defense has struggled mightily of late, giving up a combined 68 points in their last two games against the injured UCLA Bruins and the Washington Huskies. BIG EDGE: OREGON
Oregon's defense has played better than its No. 74 ranking in recent weeks. The Ducks have forced five turnovers in their last two games, held USC to its lowest point total of the season and recorded nine sacks against Arizona State."People put aside their defense because of all the stars they have offensively," Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson said. "They're an awfully good defensive team. EDGE: OREGON
As much as Arizona's defense has struggled in its last two games, the offense has shown improvement. Wildcats QB Willie Tuitama has thrown for 851 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception over those two games to combine for 82 points. "You can see our team getting more confident each week," Arizona coach Mike Stoops. EDGE: ARIZONA
The Wildcat defense shutdown this Ducks offense and QB Dennis Dixon last time these teams met. Dixon was 11-for-22 for only 95 yards with 0 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Wildcats QB Willie Tuitama had to leave this game with an unspecified injury, but was 8-for-9 with 120 yards and two touchdowns. EDGE: ARIZONA
Oregon is 13-3 ATS in its last 16 games against a losing team.
Oregon is 11-5 ATS in its last 16 games as a road favorite.
Arizona is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games as a home underdog of 10.5+ points.
Arizona is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games against a winning team.
Road team is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

Hawaii Warriors at Nevada Wolf Pack (11 PM ET | ESPN2)

Friday night’s WAC meeting has the No. 12 Hawaii Warriors taking on the Nevada Wolf Pack. Hawaii is in the middle of a dream season, going 9-0 on the year and being led by Heisman candidate QB Colt Brennan. Brennan has thrown for 3,216 yards and 28 touchdowns on year, and needs just one more TD through the air to tie another NCAA record by throwing a TD in 35 straight games. He suffered a concussion last week, but has declared he’d be ready to face Nevada. The Wolf Pack defense are fresh off a horrible performance, allowing 407 passing yards to New Mexico State’s QB Chase Holbrook, which translates to a very long night for them against this Warriors passing offense. EDGE: HAWAII
Hawaii QB Colt Brennan has put up outstanding numbers in two career games versus the Wolf Pack, completing 65-of-90 passes for 828 yards, seven TDs and one interception. In last year's meeting, a 41-34 Warriors win at Hawaii, Brennan went 36-for-47 with four TDs and no picks. EDGE: HAWAII
Nevada’s redshirt freshman QB Colin Kaepernick has stepped in for the injured Nick Graziano and completed 81-of-145 passes for 1,248 yards, 13 TDs and only two interceptions, giving him a 155.0 passer rating that ranks 10th in the nation. His excellent play has Nevada in contention for a third consecutive bowl bid, but Wolf Pack coach Chris Ault said "We have Hawaii first." Kaepernick should be in line for another nice game, as the Hawaii passing defense has been shredded to the tone of 296 passing yards over their last three games. EDGE: NEVADA
The Wolf Pack has won all three meetings between these schools in Reno, and holds a 6-5 edge in the series. Since Nevada joined the WAC in 2000, it has alternated wins and losses in its annual match-up with Hawaii as the home team has won every year. EDGE: NEVADA
Nevada boasts one of the few offenses that may be able to keep up with Hawaii's. The Warriors lead the nation with 50.2 points per game, but the Wolf Pack rank 15th with 37.3. In four full games quarterback Colin Kaepernick has started, Nevada has averaged 43.8 points. BIG EDGE: OVER
Hawaii is 10-3 ATS in its last 13 games following an ATS loss.
Hawaii is 6-2-1 ATS in its last 9 road games.
Hawaii is 1-5 in its last 6 Friday games.
Nevada is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games against a winning team.
Nevada is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games following a bye week.
Nevada is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 conference games.

What bettors need to know: Oregon at Arizona

Oregon Ducks at Arizona Wildcats (+12 1/2, 67)

                Ducks' revenge

The Oregon football team travels to Arizona seeking not only to cement its No. 2 ranking, but also to glean revenge for an embarrassing defeat last season. The Ducks' only home loss in 2006 came against the Wildcats and they haven't forgotten it.

"It was at our house," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said of the 37-10 defeat in the Oregon Daily Emerald. "It won't mean anything unless our players take note of it and it affects them and they are either frustrated by it or motivated by it."

Arizona forced Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon into three interceptions in that game, the same amount he has through nine contests this season. Dixon is now a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy and believes the current Oregon team is ready for Arizona.

"We had a lot of finger-pointing on the team," Dixon said of last season's group. "It is hard to win games when you have finger-pointing. Now we have a lot of team unity. We are not looking ahead. This team is different. The attitude is to take one game at a time. The only game that matters to us is playing against Arizona."

The Ducks are first in the Pac-10 in several offensive categories, including scoring (43 points per contest), total offense (511 yards), and rushing yards (271). They had won seven straight games against Arizona before last season?s loss, and have covered the spread in four of the last six meetings with the Wildcats.

                Arizona wants to play spoiler

The Wildcats have upset a Top 25 team in each of their last three seasons and they see Oregon's visit as a chance to keep that streak going.

"We don't have anything to lose," coach Mike Stoops told the Arizona Republic. "That is how we look at it. We are going to go out and play hard and play loose and do what we have to do.

"You look at all the ranked teams we have beaten in the last three years. There are some big wins."

Arizona beat No. 18 Arizona State in 2004, No. 7 UCLA the following year, and last season they stunned No. 9 California with a 24-20 win.

The Wildcats lost six of their first eight games to start this season, but have bounced back with two straight wins.

"Playing Oregon, where they are at, it gives you a big stage," Stoops said. "The national hype you get because of Dixon being a Heisman Trophy candidate and they are pushing for a championship. I think it gives us a chance to show what we are all about, too."

Arizona is all about offense, and boasts the strongest pass offense in the Pac-10, led by quarterback Willie Tuitama. The junior has 3,145 yards and 24 touchdowns for the season as part of a Wildcats' offense that is averaging 316.4 yards per game in the air.

That could cause serious problems for a Ducks' pass defense that ranks last in the conference (269.9 yards per contest in the air).

                Wildcats worried about Dixon

Arizona has struggled against quarterbacks that are quick on their feet this season. That's something they need to address before Oregon, and its star quarterback Dennis Dixon, arrive in Tucson this week.

"Mobile quarterbacks always give us trouble. We know that," linebacker Spencer Larsen told the Arizona Republic. "It is frustrating. We have to learn how to anchor that down and really stop him (Dixon)."

Earlier in the season, Arizona struggled against Washington quarterback Jake Locker, who is also very mobile. He rushed for 157 yards, passed for 336 yards and had two passing TDs in what was the best game of his career so far.

"We have to play a lot better than we did at Washington," Larsen added. "We learned what not to do and what to do to be successful. We played Dixon great last year, so we can do it. We have to have 11 guys on board and play assignment-focused football."

Dixon threw for only 88 yards and was intercepted three times in last year's meeting, but is a much more accomplished quarterback this time around. He has thrown for 2,067 yards and 20 TDs, and has rushed for further 556 yards and 8 touchdowns, this season.

                Head to head

Arizona's win over Oregon last season was its first since 1998, but it was the second straight game in which it covered against the Ducks. This meeting has been under the total twice in the last three games.

Oregon has won and covered in four straight games and is 8-2 ATS for the season.

                  College Football Gameday

The important college football games won’t all be played on Saturday this week as No. 2 Oregon takes their BCS hopes up against Arizona, and undefeated Hawaii takes their perfect record into Nevada.

Thursday – Oregon (2) at Arizona

The Ducks are coming off a bye and they definitely needed it to make sure quarterback Dennis Dixon was ready to play on Thursday. Dixon suffered a sprained left knee in the Ducks' last game, but is expected to play against Arizona after looking good in practice earlier in the week. The Ducks last took the field on November 3, when they defeated then-No. 6 Arizona State 35-23 as a 7.5-point favorite. Dixon completed 13-of-22 passes for 189 yards with four touchdowns in the win and also rushed for 57 yards on 11 carries. Running back Jonathan Stewart just missed hitting the 100-yard mark, as he rushed for 99 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown. Jaison Williams led all Ducks’ receivers with five receptions for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Oregon defense also played their part in the win, as they slowed down the Sun Devils’ offense while recording nine sacks.

The Wildcats are also coming off their bye and last played on Nov. 3 when they knocked off UCLA 34-27 as a 1-point home underdog to post their third straight win. Arizona quarterback Willie Tuitama threw for 341 yards on 21-of-36 passing with three touchdowns in the win, while running back Nicholas Grigsby rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

Arizona will be looking for a repeat of last year’s matchup with Oregon when they upset the Ducks 37-10 as a 14-point road underdog. The Arizona defense hounded Dixon in the win as he passed for only 88 yards with three touchdowns. Tuitama passed for 120 yards with a pair of touchdowns for Arizona. Oregon committed six turnovers that were a deciding factor in the loss. The Ducks are heavily favored again in Thursday’s clash with Arizona, as they opened as a 12.5-point favorite.

Friday – Hawaii (13) at Nevada

The Warriors defeated Fresno State 37-30 as a 19-point favorite last week, but may have suffered a huge injury setback in the victory. Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan was knocked out cold and suffered a concussion in the win, which leaves his status for Friday up in the air. Hawaii head coach June Jones said Brennan will be a game-time decision on Friday night.

Before getting knocked out Brennan completed 28-of-39 passes for 396 yards with two touchdown passes, an interception and a rushing TD against Fresno State. Running back Leon Wright-Jackson provided the rest of the Warriors’ offense with 65 yards and a touchdown on six carries. If Brennan can’t play on Friday, backup QB Tyler Graunke would get the call. Graunke has seen some action this season and has completed 44-of-72 passes for 734 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

The Wolf Pack were off last week and played their last game on Nov. 2 when they edged New Mexico State 40-38 as a 6.5-point underdog. Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick had a monster game while completing 15-of-28 passes for 237 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, while also rushing for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Luke Lippincott was also strong on the ground with 143 rushing yards on 30 carries, and Marko Mitchell led all receivers with six receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown.

When Hawaii faced Nevada last season the Warriors defeated the Wolf Pack 41-34 as a 13.5-point favorite. Brennan threw four touchdowns passes and also ran in for a score in the won.
