      STARS
      Sunday

-Yao Ming, Rockets, scored a season-high 34 points, including a pair of free throws with 20.4 seconds left, and Houston rallied to beat Charlotte 85-82.

-Drew Gooden, Cavaliers, had 18 points and 17 rebounds and Cleveland held on to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 103-95.

-Richard Hamilton, Pistons, scored a season-high 32 points to lead Detroit past Seattle 107-103.

-Antawn Jamison, Wizards, poured in 23 points and had 15 rebounds and Washington beat Atlanta 101-90.

-Jason Williams, Heat, knocked down the go-ahead shot with 19 seconds left and Miami edged New York 75-72.

      WINLESS NO MORE

After trailing by five with 2 1/2 minutes left, Jason Williams hit a go-ahead jumper with 19 seconds left and Miami rallied past New York 75-72 on Sunday for their first win of the season. Even with their 0-5 start, the Heat were a long way from the worst start in franchise history. They lost their first 17 games in 1988, their first season. ... Washington beat Atlanta 101-90 to avoid the first 0-6 start in franchise history. The Baltimore Bullets lost their first five games in the 1966-67 season for the only other 0-5 start in Wizards history.

      WORST START EVER

Detroit topped Seattle 107-103 to drop the SuperSonics to 0-7, the worst start in franchise history. Before this season, the Sonics had previously started 0-6 only once - the 1969-70 season.

      NOT THIS YEAR

David West and Chris Paul each scored 16 points lead New Orleans to a 93-72 win over Philadelphia on Sunday. The 76ers swept the season series from the Hornets last year.

      STRONG IN DEFEAT

Sam Cassell scored 28 points and Corey Maggette chipped in 25 points and 11 rebounds but the Los Angeles Clippers fell to Cleveland 103-95. The Clippers lost their second in a row after opening the season 4-0.

      REASSIGNED

Houston reassigned sharp-shooting forward Steve Novak to Rio Grande, the team's affiliate in the developmental league. The 6-foot-10 Novak has been inactive in the Rockets' first six games this season. Novak appeared in 35 games in 2006-07, his rookie season.

      SPEAKING

''It feels like you got King Kong off your back.'' - Washington's Caron Butler, who scored 24 points on Sunday to help the Wizards avoid the first 0-6 start in franchise history with a 101-90 win over Atlanta.

Paul Stastny scored twice and had an assist in Colorado's 4-2 win over Minnesota on Sunday, giving him 100 points in 99 career games. He's just the sixth player in franchise history to reach 100 points in 100 or fewer contests. Stastny's father, Peter, needed 73 games to reach 100 points. His uncles, Marian and Anton Stastny, took 82 and 95 games, respectively, to reach the mark.

        STREAKING

Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg, the NHL's leading scorer, had an assist in the Red Wings' 3-2 loss to Chicago on Sunday to extend his season-opening points streak to 17 games. ... The Blackhawks' victory was their third straight. ... Joe Sakic had an assist in Colorado's 4-2 win over Minnesota and now has 12 assists in his last 12 games. Sakic only has one goal in that time frame.

        HOME SWEET HOME

Colorado defeated Minnesota 4-2 on Sunday and have the best home record in the Western Conference at 9-1. The Avalanche ran their mark to 7-1-1 in the last nine games.

        SNAPPED

Chicago edged Detroit 3-2 on Sunday, ending the Red Wings' franchise record-tying winning streak at nine games. NHL rookie scoring leader Patrick Kane had a power-play goal and an assist and Jonathan Toews, second in rookie scoring, also had a power-play goal for the Blackhawks.

        ONE MORE GAME

Mark Messier, Ron Francis, Al MacInnis and Scott Stevens teamed up Sunday in the Legends Classic on the eve of their Hockey Hall of Fame inductions. The Hall of Fame newcomers and their Expansion side teammates fell 12-11 to the Original Six team. Claude Lemieux, Steve Shutt and Chris Nilan scored two goals each for the Original Sixers. Glenn Anderson scored four goals for the Expansion team.

        NEW GIG

Eric Lindros became the NHL Players' Association's new ombudsman Sunday, three days after he retired from the sport. As ombudsman, a position created under the recently ratified NHLPA constitution, Lindros will serve as a non-voting member of the executive board and will supervise and coordinate the activities of the divisional player representative program.

        SPEAKING

''They're a complete team now. They don't have to just rely on their goaltender anymore'' - Detroit goalie Chris Osgood, after Chicago beat the Red Wings (13-3-1) for the third time this season, 3-2 on Sunday.

          Sacramento at Utah
Utah has won three straight and is coming off a 118-94 rout of Memphis on Saturday. But the Jazz have struggled against Sacramento recently, dropping four of the last five. And while the Kings are playing without Ron Artest and Mike Bibby, Kevin Martin has stepped up with a 28.0 scoring average. Sacramento completed a 2-1 homestand with a 100-93 win over Minnesota on Saturday and looks capable of keeping this one within the spread (+14) according to Dunkel, which has Utah favored by 10. Dunkel Pick: Sacramento (+14). Here are all of today's games.

            Appalachian State at Charlotte
Appalachian State is coming off a 25-win season that included victories over Wichita State, Vanderbilt and Virginia as well as an NIT bid. That may be hard to replicate this season as the Mountaineers have lost their starting backcourt to graduation. But coach Houston Fancher does have the starting frontcourt duo of Davis Bowne and Jeremy Clayton returning along with some key reserves who will step into the fold. Tonight App State opens at Charlotte, and while it wouldn't be as dramatic as the football team winning at Michigan, the Mountaineers look capable of taking advantage of the underdog role (+2 1/2) and pulling off the upset according to Dunkel, which has the Mountaineers favored straight up by 1 1/2. Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets

New York Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers (-140, 5 1/2)

After an eight-game road trip during which they alternated wins and losses, the Flyers returned home on Saturday and picked up where they had left off. Philly beat the Penguins 5-2 to extend its undefeated home record to 5-0.

The Islanders ride their own winning streak. However, like the Flyers, New York's streak was built at home. The Isles have only played four games away from Nassau Coliseum, compiling a 2-2 record.

New York is 5-1 in the last six meetings between these clubs, but the Flyers won the only matchup this season 3-1 in Philadelphia on Oct. 13.

              Pick: Flyers -140

Nashville Predators at Columbus Blue Jackets (-140, 5 1/2)

The Predators play their second consecutive game against Columbus. They won the first game of the home-and-home series on Saturday night in a shootout as -163 favorites.

Nashville has now beaten the Jackets nine straight times. The Blue Jackets haven't beaten Nashville since April 3, 2006, and have lost five in a row at home in the series.

Columbus goalie Pascal Leclaire has been hot this season, but is only 1-4-0 for his career in starts against Nashville.

              Pick: Predators +120

Phoenix Coyotes at San Jose Sharks (-200, 5 1/2)

The Sharks have won back-to-back games once this season. They will try to accomplish the feat tonight when they host Phoenix for the second time in three days.

San Jose won 4-1 Saturday for its fifth straight victory against the Coyotes.

Phoenix entered Saturday's game on a five-game road winning streak. They jumped out to a one-goal lead in the first period, but couldn't add any more.

Despite the loss, the Coyotes are a respectable 5-2 on the road. The Sharks have only two wins at home this season.

              Pick: Coyotes +170

Pick 'n' roll: Monday's best NBA bets

                            Cleveland Cavaliers at Denver Nuggets (-6 1/2, 205 1/2)

Two of the league?s brightest young stars square off tonight in Denver. Both were drafted in 2003, but so far Carmelo Anthony (the No. 3 pick) has had the better of LeBron James (No. 1) in head-to-head meetings.

Anthony has led Denver to a 6-2 record in his eight games against Cleveland, helping his team win ? and cover the spread ? in both contests last season. He has 32 points in each of the Nuggets' last two games this season, including a 113-106 come-from-behind win over Indiana on Saturday.

Despite that record, James has had his fair share of success against the Nuggets. He is averaging 22 points and 7.4 rebounds in eight meetings, including a triple-double last January.

LeBron is starting to find his form this season, leading Cleveland to consecutive wins over the Clippers and the Kings. He is fourth in the league in scoring with 26.6 points per game, and put up 22 in last night?s 103-95 win over Los Angeles.

Both teams have won consecutive games behind strong outings from their young stars, but Denver has had the better of Cleveland recent seasons and that is likely to continue tonight.

                            Pick: Denver -6 1/2

New Orleans Hornets at New Jersey Nets (odds TBA)

The Nets could be without star forward Vince Carter for tonight?s game after he sprained his ankle in Saturday?s 112-101 loss to the Celtics.

"I don't know, we'll see what happens," he told The Associated Press when asked if he would play against New Orleans. "I don't want to put a timetable on it."

Carter is second on the Nets in scoring with 17 points per game and scored that many in the loss to Boston. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for New Jersey. The Nets were held without a basket for a large chunk of the third quarter, with Boston controlling the game from start to finish.

New Jersey is now 4-2 despite having one of the worst offenses in the league. The Nets average just 91.5 points per game and have only one starter shooting over 40 percent ? Richard Jefferson (49 percent).

The Hornets, meanwhile, are off to a quick start. They are 5-2 for the season and snapped a two-game losing run with a 93-72 win over Philadelphia yesterday. The Hornets did a good job of resting players for tonight?s game, with four of their starters playing fewer than 30 minutes.

New Orleans is 10-1 against the spread in its last 11 road games.

                            Pick: Hornets

Sacramento Kings at Utah Jazz (-13, 203 1/2)

The Jazz chase their fourth straight win tonight behind a powerful offense that shows no signs of letting up. Utah (5-2) is averaging 111.1 points per game, with Carlos Boozer and Andrei Kirilenko leading the way.

Boozer has team highs in points (25.4) and rebounds (12.6), while Kirilenko seems to have settled down after reportedly asking for a move away from Utah in the offseason. He had 15 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists in Saturday?s 118-94 win over Memphis.

"AK's got a great attitude," Boozer said of his fellow forward. "He's been working hard and it feels like he's everywhere on the court."
The Kings travel to Utah in search of their first road win of the season. They continue to struggle in the absence of forward Ron Artest, who serves the final game of seven-game suspension for getting involved in a domestic dispute in the offseason.

Sacramento has struggled defensively, allowing more than 101 points per game while allowing its opponents to shoot 47.3 percent from the field.

                            Pick: Jazz -13
