    Six-pack for Monday

-- Peyton Manning threw six INTs Sunday night, as Colts lost 23-21, when Adam Viniatieri missed 29-yard FG in final 1:40, after rallying from a 23-0 deficit on a rainy night.

-- Chargers led this game 16-0 before Rivers completed one pass for San Diego. Darren Sproles ran both kick and punt back for TD in the game's first six minutes.

-- NFL teams are fragile; eight days ago, Colts led by 10 in fourth quarter vs Patriots; now, they've lost two in row and suffered some more injuries, notably Dwight Freeney.

-- Walk-on Jeff Jordan made his debut for Illinois Sunday, playing three minutes late in the Illinois win. Jordan is son of Michael Jordan, who is slightly famous.

-- Miami Heat got their first win Sunday, outscoring Knicks 23-14 in fourth quarter for an ugly three-point win.

-- After watching free preview of NBA League Pass, I gave in and bought the package for this season-- quality of play has gotten better, more teams are pass more, dribble less.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday...........

      13) If Steve McNair starts one more game for Ravens, Brian Billick should be fired immediately; McNair can't run anymore and he can't pass that well either. Boller can at least stretch a defense a little bit, but right now, Ravens are a mess.

      12) By the way, last time Bengals won game without scoring a TD was back in 1994, against the Seahawks. Baltimore made a hideous Bengal defense look like the freakin' '85 Bears.

      11) Back to Billick for a second; he made a brutal, indefensible replay challenge after first play of 2nd quarter; he won it, but gained total of four yards for his trouble. Why? Later, when they lost a fumble on shaky call, Billick couldn't challenge it, because he was out of challenges. Brilliant!!!!!

      10) Why on God's Green Earth would the Giants wear red for their most important game of the season? What happened to making the Cowboys wear blue on the road? At very least, in the most important game of the season, they shouldn't place merchandising over a normal gameday routine.

      9) Watch SportsCenter tonight for Roy Williams' catch that made score 24-14 Arizona; Lions' WR caught ball with right hand, while his left arm was being held by a defender.

      8) Before you want the Raiders to rush JaMarcus Russell in as the starting QB for Oakland, remember he is couple years younger than Hawai'i QB Colt Brennan. Russell has time, and I am convinced it is better to let a kid watch for while, before he gets thrown to the wolves, especially at QB.

      7) Cardinals are still only team in NFL without first quarter TD

      6) Redskins wasted a timeout with 9:23 left in third quarter, as they lined up for very short FG and play clock ran down close to zero. Instead of wasting timeout, why not just take penalty and boot the FG from five yards further back? Timeouts in the second half should be treated like gold, in a close game.

      5) Before Darren Sproles ran kick and punt back for TDs, last player to do this in same game was Dante Hall, five years ago.

      4) Five of the 26 teams that played Sunday didn't score a TD on offense. Quality of QB play is low right now, though there are young guys (Campbell, Anderson, Lemon) who show lot of potential to become stars. Just not yet.

      3) Detroit is now 1-3 when they don't win turnover battle, and game they won was by FG over Vikings, with Jackson at QB.

      2) Favorites went 4-8-1 Sunday, home teams 3-9-1. Under was 6-7 in Sunday's game.

      1) Colt-Charger game was bizarre; am concerned for Charger offense- they've done almost nothing last two games.

49ers (2-6) @ Seahawks (4-4) —Seattle scored 33,30 points in last two games, but couldn’t hold 21-6 lead on Lake Erie last week, but they’re still in good shape in division, since other three teams are bad. 49ers lost last six games, with four losses by 18+ points; they have yet to gain 290 yards in any game this season. Hawks won first meeting 23-3 in Candlestick, holding 49ers to 22 net passing yards (that was with Dilfer under center, not Smith). Seattle lost three of last four games, beating winless Rams; three of their four wins are by 14+ points. 49ers are -9 in turnovers last five games, -15 in sacks; this is their third road game in last four weeks. Potentially ugly Monday night game.

SF 49ers at Seattle Seahawks (ESPN | 8:30 PM ET)

Monday Night football puts two struggling teams together; the San Francisco 49ers against the Seattle Seahawks. Both teams have fallen on hard times thanks to a number of injuries. Seattle’s offense has been solid of late though led by QB Matt Hasselbeck. He has topped the 300-yard mark in two out of his last three contests, along with 6 touchdowns and three inceptions. Hasselbeck threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns in the last meeting against the 49ers and coach Mike holmgren said “Our strength has been passing the ball and we have to go to our strengths.” EDGE: SEAHAWKS
49ers have lost their last six games in-a-row and are only averaging 13.0 points per game during that stretch. Good news is QB Alex Smith is getting healthier and will take some pressure off of injured RB Frank Gore. The 49ers are only two games back of the Seahawks in the division and coach Mike Nolan was quoted “The division race is not over yet.” EDGE: 49ERS
These two division rivals know each other very well, which has led to low scoring games – going UNDER the total in three straight meetings. EDGE: UNDER
49ers are 14-4 ATS in their last 18 Monday games.
49ers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 against the NFC West.
49ers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
Seahawks are 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games as a favorite.
Seahawks are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.

                  NFL Preview
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Monday Night Football Preview

Matt Hasselbeck and his Seahawks will be looking to extend their lead in the NFC West when they get a visit from the rival (and floundering) Niners on Monday Night Football.

Seattle's record fell to 4-4 on the season with a 33-30 overtime loss to the Browns in Cleveland last weekend. Hasselbeck completed 30-of-47 pass attempts for 318 yards in that game, with two touchdown passes and one INT. Bobby Engram had 14 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown, while D.J. Hackett had six catches for 58 yards and a TD.

Shaun Alexander rushed for just 32 yards on 14 carries for Seattle in their loss to Cleveland, with knee and ankle injuries greatly limiting his effectiveness. Alexander missed some practice time this week, and he could very well see a reduced workload again Monday. Maurice Morris had nine carries for 55 yards Sunday versus the Browns.

The Seahawks were also tagged with their fourth against-the-spread loss of the season last weekend, dropping their ATS mark to 3-4-1 in 2007. Seattle has only managed to cover once in their past four games - when they beat the Rams 33-6 two weeks ago. Sunday's result was also an easy OVER result; the Seahawks are 3-5 OU this season.

San Francisco lost last weekend (20-16 to the Falcons) as well, but for them it was their sixth defeat in a row and it dropped their record to 2-6 on the season. Alex Smith had a difficult day behind center for the Niners, completing just 17-of-38 pass attempts for 149 yards, with no touchdowns and three interceptions. Smith's QB rating is now only 57.6.

Maurice Hicks scored San Francisco's only touchdown in that loss to Atlanta, rumbling into the end zone from nine yards out in the first quarter. Michael Robinson ran for 67 yards on 17 carries in that contest, while Frank Gore missed the game with an ankle injury. Gore has just 435 yards rushing and three touchdowns in seven games this year.

The Niners also lost against-the-spread versus the Falcons, which ran their ATS losing streak to three games. San Francisco hasn't covered since losing just 9-7 to the Ravens back on October 7, and they're 2-5-1 ATS on the season. Sunday's result was yet another UNDER play for the Niners; they're 3-5 on the OVER/UNDER in the '07 season.

The Seahawks and Niners have already met once this season, with Seattle rolling to a 23-3 road win back on September 30. Hasselbeck went 23-of-31 for 281 yards in that victory, with two touchdown passes and one interception. Alexander ran for 78 yards on 25 carries, and Engram had a TD catch. Trent Dilfer was good on 12-of-33 pass attempts for 128 yards on that day for San Francisco. Gore managed to run for 79 yards.

Seattle had been listed as a 1.5-point road favorite in that September matchup, and they easily covered that spread. The combined score fell UNDER the day's posted total of 40.5 points. Last season the Niners managed to beat the Seahawks twice - 24-14 on the road in December, and 20-14 at home in November. Those were both against-the spread wins for San Francisco too, while only the November game was an UNDER play.

Vegas oddsmakers have the Seahawks listed as big home favorites for this primetime matchup - they're giving 10 points to the Niners. The OVER/UNDER is pegged at 39.5.

Here are the official injury reports for both San Francisco and Seattle for Monday night:

                  San Francisco Injuries

Rocky Bernard DT Probable Week 10 (groin)

The Niners play against another divisional opponent in Week 11 - they'll get a visit from the lowly Rams at Monster Park. The Seahawks will play host to the Bears next Sunday.

                    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

What bettors need to know about the Monday nighter

                    San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks (-9 ½, 38)

                    MNF feature’s disappointing duo

Seattle, with its 4-4 record, is leading the NFC West in spite of itself, while San Francisco is on a six-game losing streak. Together they are two of the league’s most disappointing clubs this season.

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren says even though his team looks to be on its way to a fourth-straight NFC West title, he is not happy with the current situation. Seattle has lost three of its last four.
"No, I am not comfortable," he told The Associated Press. "Now that it's an eight-game season, if there wasn't a sense of urgency before – which there should be all the time – there certainly is now."
The 49ers, meanwhile, were many people’s pick to challenge the Seahawks for the division title this season. Instead, they have lost every game after winning their first two, and have the lowest ranked offense in the league (224.2 total yards per game).

Remarkably, they could still win the division.

"Yeah, maybe we just all ought to shut up and play," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said when asked about the state of his team and the division.

San Francisco has won, and covered, in two of its last three games against the Seahawks.

                    Hawks playing to their strengths

With its running game averaging just 95.1 yards per game, Seattle is likely to use a pass-first offense on Monday. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-3 win over San Francisco in September, which seems to have made Holmgren rethink his game plan this week.

"That might be the way we have to go now, play to our strengths just a little bit, how we're going right now," Holmgren told AP. "And instead of striving for balance, maybe we have to tip the scales just a little bit to be at our most productive, we'll see."
Hasselbeck has been particularly impressive in his last three games, throwing for six TDs and three interceptions. He’s topped the 300-yard mark in two of his last three contests, picking up the slack for Seattle’s lackluster running game.

“We have tried any number of things that I don't want to talk about necessarily," Holmgren said of his rush offense in the Seattle Times. "We've met for endless hours. And it's not happening. That part is not happening."

The Seahawks’ inability to get things going on the ground has a lot to do with a series of injuries for running back Shaun Alexander. The former MVP has rushed for just 492 on 149 carries this season. In 2005, his last injury-free year, he ran for 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Alexander missed most of last week’s practices because of a knee problem, but is expected to play Monday.

                    Alex Smith can’t forge success

This season has not gone well for San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith. He has completed less than 50 percent of his throws and is the lowest-rated passer in the league. He has just two TD passes in six starts and the 49ers’ pass offense is last in the NFL with 132.8 yards per game with him at the helm.

Nolan didn’t pull any punches when he spoke of Smith, but did blame some of the QB’s problems on a persistent injury.

"Coming into the season I thought he was ahead of where he has been right now. I thought he would do a better job up to this point," he told AP. "His accuracy has been a little off. I think that's somewhat due to the soreness he has in the shoulder.

"But at the same time if you can play, you know the quarterbacks are expected to perform at a high level."

The 49ers haven’t scored more than 20 points in a game since a 20-7 win over Arizona on opening day. Smith insists he is still improving, even if his numbers say otherwise.

"I think as far as my progression, I look from my rookie year to last year, and last year to even this year – as far as how I feel, how comfortable I am back there, my decision making, my ability to play this game in this league – I do feel like I have made strides every year. And I can see it every week."

                    Seattle’s game-time decisions

The Seahawks have six starters listed at questionable ahead of Monday’s matchup, and most of them will be game-time decisions. The list includes running back Shaun Alexander, who sprained his knee last week, and wide receiver Deion Branch who has a sprained foot.

Branch missed the past three games with that injury, but insists he will not rush his return.

"I'm not going to risk further injuring myself just because it's Monday night," Branch told the Seattle Post Intelligencer. "If it's ready to go, I'm going to play. If it's not ready to go, then I may not play."

Also listed as questionable are tight end Marcus Pollard (knee), defensive end Patrick Kerney (oblique), defensive tackle Rocky Bernard (groin) and linebacker Niko Koutouvides.

Asked what he needs to see from the injured in the build-up to the game, Holmgren said, "Just that they can run without hurting, that they can do what they have to do in the game. Branch, as an example, his game is quickness and speed, and he's got to be able to do that.

"Otherwise, I'd be doing him a disservice, and really the team. As much as I want him back, I have to be smart with him."

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      San Francisco at Seattle (-10)

Why 49ers cover: Are 14-4 ATS in their last 18 Monday Night Football games. Frank Gore is expected to return from an ankle injury and has averaged 110 rushing yards per game against the Seahawks in his career.

Why Seahawks cover: In his last five games against the Niners, Matt Hasselbeck has thrown 11 touchdown passes while averaging 249 yards per game. Could have receiver Deion Branch back from injury. The 49ers sport the NFL’s worst offense and are only averaging 13 points per game.

Total (39 ½): Under is 7-1 in San Francisco’s last eight versus NFC West.

San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks under 39

The 49ers couldn't gain 10 yards even if you gave their offense six cracks. Star back Frank Gore is banged up and the offensive line is in shambles. Throw in a quarterback with a bum shoulder and you've got the formula for a great under club.

The Seahawks are now one-dimensional with the football. If anyone knows where the real Shaun Alexander is could you please page him? The guy is killing my fantasy team. My crystal ball says there should be an abundance of kicking and punting on Monday night. Hope you’re a fan of special teams.

                        Last week's record: 1-2

                        Season record: 15-12

Carolina's only touchdown came on Ken Lucas' 27-yard fumble return in the Panthers' 20-13 loss to Atlanta. Vinny Testaverde, struggling to move at times, was just 13-of-28 for 153 yards and the Panthers only got 59 yards rushing from DeShaun Foster.

                            ---

''It really felt strange, being in the dome, period, after everything the dome went through and after everything the city went through. To be honest with you, I didn't think I'd ever come back here. I've kind of avoided the city, not the people, but the city. I was hoping we wouldn't play the Saints, so I wouldn't have to come back.'' - St. Louis defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, the Saints' head coach until the end of the 2005 season, after the Rams' first win of the season came at New Orleans 37-29.
