      Sunday's College Basketball

      Top Five Games
Nevada heads way east to open post-Fazekas era by visiting a Central Florida squad that has three starters back from its 22-9 club from LY. Wolf Pack losing Sessions was a blow, but Kemp has lead talented newcomers early on. Knights are moving into their new arena, which is why they're playing better teams.

Saint Louis, Pitt spent last two days pounding on stiffs, now it is time for best game of weekend in this event, as Majerus gets first real test for his Billiken squad that has four starters back from team that won 20 games LY. Pitt lost three starters from its 26-9 squad; they still have talent, but will miss Gray inside.

UMass scored 90-102 points in first two games this weekend, now faces Northern Iowa squad that allowed 45-55, so battle of styles, on home court where UNI is tough out. UMass has two starters back from 24-9 squad, UNI thre eback from 18-13 group Remember that these teams are playing third time in three days.

Stanford has loaded team, routed Harvard, Northwestern State in first two games, but UCSB won both also, albeit by smaller margins. Cardinal has 10 of top 11 scorers back. Gauchos have five of top six scorers back from LY, but Big West has slipped to point where top-ranked team (UCSB) is 15-point dog here.

Montana crushed Colorado State by 37 in its opener, now goes to Gonzaga, which has Heytfeldt back and is expected to be the top team in WCC again this year. Griz has four starters back in addition to talented newcomers; they pulled away in second half Friday, abut are stepping way up in class here.

      Rest of the Card
-- Michigan opens Beilein era (lost four starters from its 22-13 team) hosting Brown, which has three starters back frrom 11-18 LY and is picked for 5th in Ivy. Michigan is picked 8th in Big 11
-- Illinois has three starters back from 23-12 squad, is picked 8th in Big 11. Northeastern is smallish, quick team; they have two starters back from 13-19 team. Huskies are picked 6th in CAA.

-- Cal Poly scored 64-45 points in first two games here, now is favored to salvage last game vs Northern Illinois squad that lost its first two games under Patton by 75-45/102-87 scores.
-- Portland lost 78-64 to San Diego State Saturday, after losing 75-68 at host Fresno Friday, so they're going for first win here, vs Liberty team, which lost its first two games. 62-50/71-62.
-- Fresno State's talent level is down this year, as McGuire left early for pros, but chemistry level is up; they won first two this weekend, by 7-9 points. Aztecs are 2-0, winning by 12,14 pts.
-- Northwestern State, Harvard both took it on chin at Stanford so far; Demons play lot of guys, seem to need a PG. Harvard is 0-2, losing by 55,18. Demons lost their two games by 21-39 pts.

-- Western Michigan led 33-30 at half last night vs Pacific, got blown away in second half (lost 90-76), so they'll be happy to see very young Pepperdine squad that lost 110-70 on Saturday.
-- Pacific had terrific second half last night, outscoring Western Michigan 60-43 in second half; they go up in class here, facing high-flying Oregon squad that isn't deep, but is very talented.

-- Belmont lost to Bowling Green last night after pulling upset at Cincinnati Friday. Well-coached Western Carolina lost tough one by 2 to Bearcats last night- how much do they have left?
-- Cincinnati beat Western Carolina 66-64 last night, after losing to Belmont night before, so this hasn't been best of weekends for Cronin. Cincy native Orr got first win at Bowling Green as Falcons beat Belmont 78-67 last night.

-- Hampton has all five starters back from 15-16 team that had a 10-8 record in league LY. Tulsa has four starters back from its 20-11 team; it is coached by Wojcik, who played at Navy with David Robinson.
-- Penn lost in OT to Drexel Friday, after rallying fron down 13 at half; they shot just 31.3% for game. Loyola lost to Towson State 83-69; Greyhounds shot a feeble 10-29 from arc, were -12 on boards.
-- Florida beat North Dakota State by 10 in opener, as Calathes had 22 in his college debut. Tennessee Tech lost its opener at Rutgers, 70-64; both teams lost a lot from their teams last year.

-- Samford plays Princeton style; they have three starters back from 16-16 team that was 12-8 in OVC (5th). Their guards don't have much experience. Evansville has new coach and pair of starters back from 14-17 team that got Merfeld fired.
-- Marist lost its terrific PG Jordan along with two other starters from 25-9 team that won an NIT game last spring. Foxes bring in McCroskey, who transferred to Marist after leaving Syracuse.
-- Georgia Tech got upset by NC-Greeensboro in its opener, is on road here, visiting Tennessee State club that lost couple of starters from 12-20 team LY (8-12 in OVC). Tech needs to find a point guard, or will be long season in ACC.

        CFL Playoffs

Montreal (8-10) @ Winnipeg (10-7-1) -- Alouettes limp into the playoffs, losing six of last eight games; they were 0-3 this year vs Winnipeg, losing 32-23 here in Week 2 (+4.5), then 20-18 at home two weeks later (-3) and 20-17 here last week (+8.5). This is their third straight week travelling out west. Bombers was 3-4 in its last seven games; seven of their last nine stayed under.

Calgary (7-10-1) @ Saskatchewan (12-6) -- Stamps lost three in row, six of last seven games; they lost two of three vs Riders in '07, with Calgary losing 49-8 (+1), back in Week 2, its only visit to Regina all season (won 44-22 in Week 12, lost 33-21 in Week 15). Riders knocked Stamps out of playoffs at McMahon in '06, 30-21 as 7-point dogs, so they're looking to return favor here, but Saskatchewan is hot, winning five of last six games.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up college football Saturday

            13) Oregon State 29, Washington 23, one of stranger games we've seen this season; horrible officiating, with OSU fumble allowed to stand, when they should have had ball on Huskie 2-yard line, leading 29-23 late. Washington drove inside OSU 30-yard line, but mercifully was stopped, or else it wouldn't have been a fair outcome, it was that bad a call.

            12) Indiana led 14-3 at Northwestern, when QB Lewis was out for one play, after getting wind knocked out. They put in new QB, a freshman, who you figure would hand off, but no, they have him throw ball, it gets picked off for TD, and Indiana is on its way to a damaging 31-28 loss in Evanston.

            11) When interim coach Lynch gets passed over for the job on a permanent basis, he can think about that play, especially if Hoosiers wind up missing out on a bowl game.

            10) When did the Heisman Trophy become an award for the guys on winning teams? When voters got so lazy that they don't have to know much, just who is in top three of the polls. McFadden is the best player in the country, no matter what Arkansas does. Voting for anyone else is being contrarian.

            9) How about ABC? They have Ohio State-Michigan rivalry game next week, with Buckeyes #1 and Wolverines on long win streak. Until yesterday. Now, for only second time since 1935, both sides come into the game off a loss, with winner going to the Rose Bowl.

            8) The one thing that will stick with me about this season in college football is the amazing inconsistency of teams; last week, Nebraska gave up 76 points. This week, they scored 73. UCLA is totally bizarre- they used their #4 QB last week, and still almost beat Arizona State.

            7) Colorado led 21-0 at half at Iowa State, but lost 31-28; that is likely to cost the Buffaloes a bowl bid.

            6) Think about it: 11 of 12 SEC teams are going to be eligible for bowls, and maybe 10 of the Big 12 teams. Now, 6-6 clubs cannot get in a bowl in front of 7-5 teams, but still. having 11 of your teams bowl eligible is pretty good.

            5) Alabama led Mississippi State 9-3 in last 30 seconds of the first half, had ball in MSU red zone, when Wilson threw bad pick in end zone, which got run back 104 or so yards for a TD that made Croom's team bowl eligible. That is three years in a row Bama hasn't scored offensive TD against the Bulldogs.

            4) How pathetic did Miami look last night? Losing 48-0 in the Orange Bowl finale was just awful. Looking at some of rules coach Shannon has established for his players, he is going to have hard time recruiting. No driving after dark?. How do the players get home from practice late in the season?

            3) Superior coaching job by Tom O'Brien, who has NC State 5-5, with four wins in row; they held off Tar Heels when UNC had ball on Wolfpack 12-yard line with 0:33 left.

            2) Navy scored 74 points and didn't cover; they trailed at the half, 49-45 at woeful North Texas, after beating Notre Dame for first time in 44 years. North Texas scored 62, lost. Wow.

All of which reminds me of a story a friend of mine tells me; he was a high school basketball coach, whose team just lost a key game for the league championship. By one point. As he is walking off the court, one of the locals pats him on back and says, "Don't worry coach, you covered."

            1) Notre Dame, with its NBC contract and arrogance that lets it stay an independent in football but a member of Big East in basketball (they aren't even in eastern Indiana, much less the eastern part of America) is 1 and freakin' 9.
