Pick 'n' roll: Sunday's best NBA bets

Cleveland Cavaliers at Los Angeles Clippers (+1, 195)

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been much more consistent since falling to the Dallas Mavericks in their opener and narrowly defeating the New York Knicks the following night at Quicken Loans Arena.

Cleveland has won two of its first four road contests versus the Western Conference, including Friday's 93-91 victory over the Sacramento Kings. The Cavaliers are averaging more than 98 points per contest on this western trip, two points more than their season average. LeBron James is leading the team in three statistical categories, including points (27.3), assists (7.5) and blocks (1.8).

Veteran center Zydrunas Ilgauskas is leading the Cavaliers in rebounding with more than 14 per contest. Cleveland is one of the top rebounding clubs in the league this season, registering more than 13 offensive rebounds and 32 defensive boards per outing.

The Clippers are coming off their first loss of the season Friday against the Detroit Pistons. The Clippers shot a meager 35 percent from the field and less than 25 percent from the three-point line. They were also out-rebounded, 40-26, including 13-7 on the offensive glass.

Clippers guard Cuttino Mobley missed Friday's game and is questionable Sunday. Mobley is shooting a team-best 46 percent and is second in scoring with more than 18 points per contest.

      Pick: Clippers +1

Detroit Pistons at Seattle SuperSonics (+6 1/2, 199)

Seattle rookie sensation Kevin Durant must wait at least one more night to experience his first victory as a professional. The SuperSonics won?t hang with the Pistons on Sunday at the Key Arena.

Detroit (4-1) handed the Clippers their first loss of the season Friday. The Pistons own the NBA's stingiest defense, limiting opponents to less than 88 points per contest. They are also one of the leagues most efficient offensive clubs, shooting 47 percent and averaging more than 99 points per outing. Four Pistons are averaging more than 14 points per contest, with veteran point guard Chauncey Billups leading the way at more than 19 points per contest.

The Sonics are a decent offensive club, averaging 100 points per game. However, they are a terrible defensive team, allowing more than 108 points per contest. Seattle is also allowing its opponents to shoot above 46 percent from the field and 35 percent from behind the arc. Durant leads the Sonics by averaging more than 22 points per contest despite shooting below 40 percent this season.

      Pick: Pistons -6 1/2

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks (+150, 5 1/2)

The Red Wings are on the brink of a franchise record after winning nine straight games dating back to Oct. 15. Detroit is building another streak in the process, reeling off four straight unders. The Wings have allowed only five goals in those four games and an average of only 1.5 goals per game during their win streak.

Chicago and Detroit have faced each other twice this season. Their last meeting, on Oct. 12, was a 3-2 win for the Blackhawks that resulted in a push. The first matchup played over the 5-goal total, but had to be decided in a shootout. (Chicago won 4-3.)

        Pick: Under 5 1/2 goals

Minnesota Wild at Colorado Avalanche (-190, 5 1/2)

With an 8-1 record at Pepsi Center and six wins in its last eight games, Colorado doesn't present great value at home. The Avs don't play again for five days after tonight's contest, when they'll begin a four-game road trip. Look for them to make the most of the fan support.

The Wild have strung together two wins after a five-game slide, but both those wins came at home. They have lost their last three on the road including a 3-1 loss in Colorado on Oct. 28.

Minnesota has won just four times out of 16 games in the mile-high air, and the home team is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the teams.

        Pick: Avalanche -190

          Washington at Atlanta
As Gilbert Arenas goes, so go the Wizards. And so far neither is going at all. Washington is hoping to avoid its first 0-6 start in franchise history, but will need a better performance out of Agent Zero than he has delivered so far (36.0 percent shooting from the field; 15.6 percent from three-point range). Today the Wiz will travel to Atlanta to face an improving Hawks team. While the Hawks were soundly beaten at Boston (106-83) on Friday, they have been tough at home (2-0) where they're averaging 103.0 points and shooting 45.6 percent. Those numbers look too good against a struggling Wizards club and makes Atlanta the pick (-4) according to Dunkel, which has the Hawks favored by 11 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Atlanta (-4). Here are all of today's games.

              Brown at Michigan
The Wolverines welcomed new coach John Beilein with an 82-55 win over Radford in the opener. The lone returning starter, point guard Jerret Smith, was suspended for the game after violating a team policy. Beilein looks to be asserting control early, which is not a bad thing considering he led West Virginia to the Elite Eight and Sweet 16 in back-to-back seasons before finishing with an NIT championship last year. Michigan looks like a good pick to make it two straight today against Brown and cover the line (-13 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Wolverines favored by 19. Dunkel Pick: Michigan (-13 1/2). Detroit at Chicago
Detroit comes into tonight's contest in Chicago looking for its franchise-record 10th straight win. The road hasn't posed much of a problem for the Red Wings, either, as they are 6-1-1 away from Joe Louis Arena. The Blackhawks have beaten the Wings in the last two contests, but have not done a great job of protecting the home ice (5-5-0), including losses in three of their last five. Detroit looks like a good pick (-165) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Red Wings favored by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Detroit (-165). Here are all of today's games.
