Pick 'n' roll: Sunday's best NBA bets

        Boston Celtics at Toronto Raptors
The Celtics and the Raptors are both coming off blowout wins Friday. The Celtics easily toppled the Washington Wizards at home, while the Raptors went on the road to rout the New Jersey Nets.
The new-look Celtics put on a clinic Friday against the Wizards with Kevin Garnett tallying 20 points, 22 rebounds and five assists. Ray Allen chipped in with 17 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including 2-for-5 shooting behind the arc. Celtics star Paul Pierce also compiled 28 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Boston's lineup gets another boost Sunday with the return of former Miami Heat defensive specialist James Posey from a one-game suspension. Posey was an exceptional offseason pickup, adding a defensive presence to an offensively charged roster.
The Raptors, fresh off their 106-69 win over the Nets, will be in a tough situation against another conference contender. Toronto shot an impressive 59 percent from the three-point line, compared to New Jersey's 30 percent. The Raptors also had 12 turnovers compared to the Nets' 19 mishaps, which resulted in 24 points for Toronto.
"It added a lot to it," Toronto star Chris Bosh told reporters. "We did lose in this building in the playoffs. It was a significant factor."
Toronto could suffer a letdown against the Celtics after Friday's emotionally charged victory.
        Pick: Celtics

        Cleveland Cavaliers at Phoenix Suns
Cleveland lost Wednesday's home opener to the Dallas Mavericks and followed with Friday's narrow win over the lowly New York Knicks. The Mavs now must travel to Phoenix on Sunday to face the always dangerous Suns.
Cavaliers star LeBron James tallied 47 points, seven rebounds and seven helpers Friday, making up for his disappointing 10-point outing against the Mavs. However, the Cavaliers couldn't cover as 5-point home favorites against the Knicks or as 2 "-point home favorites against the Mavericks.
The Suns have won eight of their last 10 meetings with the Cavs and covered the spread in two meetings last season. The Suns, off Friday's 119-98 setback to Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, are an impressive 7-3 against the spread (ATS) following a double-digit loss.
"For whatever reason, the juice wasn't there and it's got to be," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters. "We can't be small, light and slow, and that's what we were tonight."
Bettors should expect the Suns to respond with more enthusiasm against the struggling Cavaliers at America West Arena. The home team is 5-1 ATS in the last five series meetings between these clubs, while the favorite is 5-0 in the last five overall series matchups.
        Pick: Suns

Seattle Supersonics at Los Angeles Clippers
The Sonics have been competitive in their first two losses this season, falling 120-103 to the Nuggets on Wednesday and then dropping Thursday's 106-99 decision at Seattle.
Kevin Durant seems comfortable playing against NBA competition, scoring 18 points in his debut and notching an impressive 27 points versus the Suns. Supersonics center Chris Wilcox was also outstanding, recording double-digit points in both of his outings and grabbing 19 combined rebounds.
Chris Kaman led the Clippers to a 120-114 win over the shorthanded Golden State Warriors with 26 points and 18 rebounds. Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley chipped in with 20 points and 21 points, respectively. Kaman matches up with Wilcox on Sunday, which should limit his shot attempts and force the other players to carry the scoring load against the Sonics.
The road team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings between the Sonics and the Clippers, while the road team is 5-1 ATS in the last six series meetings.
        Pick: Sonics

          Hockey today - Nov. 4

          SCOREBOARD
          Sunday, Nov. 3

Ottawa at Boston (7 p.m. EST).

The defending East champions look to win seven straight games for the first time in six years as they go for a sweep in a home-and-home series against the Boston Bruins at TD Banknorth Garden on Sunday night.

          STARS
          Friday

          - Shane Doan, Coyotes, had a goal and two assists in leading Phoenix to a 5-0 defeat of Dallas.

          - Mike Cammalleri, Kings, scored a goal and added two assists in Los Angeles' 5-2 victory over San Jose.

          - Richard Zednik, Panthers, scored twice in a three-goal second period to give Florida a 4-2 win over Buffalo.

          - David Legwand, Predators, had a goal and an assist to help Nashville beat Edmonton 4-1.

          - R.J. Umberger, Flyers, scored a goal and added an assist as Philadelphia posted a 3-2 victory against Washington.

          KINGS OF THE ROAD

Los Angeles took over first place in the Pacific Division with a 5-2 victory at San Jose Friday night. It was the Kings' second straight road win and their fifth victory in six games. Goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin made 45 saves and Dustin Brown scored two goals for Los Angeles in the front end of a home-and-home series.

          SHUTOUT

Mikael Tellqvist stopped 35 shots for his fifth career shutout as Phoenix blanked Dallas 5-0 on Friday night. Tellqvist, who was sick with the flu, was also credited with an assist on a second-period Coyotes goal in what turned out to be a very healthy performance.

          SCORING

Washington's Alex Ovechkin scored for the eighth consecutive game against Philadelphia Friday night, but the Capitals star came up short in losing to the Flyers 3-2. Ovechkin has the longest active scoring streak by any player against one team.

          SIGNED

Senators center Jason Spezza agreed to a $49 million, seven-year contract extension Friday that allowed Ottawa to lock up the final member of its potent first line. Spezza, who has a goal and 12 assists in 10 games this season, would have been a restricted free agent after this season but now will be with the team through 2014-15. He joins Daniel Alfredsson, who is signed through 2011-12, and Dany Heatley, who agreed to a six-year extension through 2013-14 last month.

          SPEAKING

''We play the game hard, but within the rules. Other than a couple of minor blips, we just try and outwork the teams. We play a hitting style, a checking style where we try to turn pucks over. I don't think it's 'Bullies.''' - Philadelphia's Mike Richards after the Flyers' 3-2 win over Washington Friday night. There 46 minutes in penalties and no fewer than four outright fights in the game. Richards, who received 12 stitches in and around his nose from a fight, came back to score a goal.

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets

Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks (-125, 5 1/2)

The Nashville Predators have been doing their best to impersonate a yo-yo this season. After a season-high six-game losing skid they have won four out of five. Tonight they will shoot for a third-straight payday in Chicago against the Blackhawks. Chicago is also on a bit of a run. The Blackhawks try for their first three-game winning streak this season. Patrick Lalime could get the start for the Hawks even though his record against the Preds is not much better than Nikolai Khabibulin's. The Bulin Wall has lost his last four starts against Nashville while Lalime is 4-5-1 in his career versus the Preds.

              Pick: Blackhawks -125

Ottawa Senators at Boston Bruins (+130, 5 1/2)

The Ottawa Senators are showing everyone that winning the East last season was no fluke. The favored Sens will try for their seventh straight win when they play the second game of a home-and-home series with the Bruins tonight. If they win it would be the first time they've won seven straight in six years.

Ottawa won four straight games on the road to start this season, outscoring its opponents 14-6. The Senators have also won five of their last six matchups against the Bruins, including the last two meetings in Boston. If the Bruins want to have any chance to steal the payday tonight they will have to do a better job stopping Dany Heatley. Heatley has seven goals and eight assists in his last 11 games against the Bruins.

              Pick: Senators -150

                Utah at LA Lakers
There may be unrest with Kobe in LaLa land, but that wasn't evident when the Lakers knocked off Phoenix on the road by 21 (119-98) on Friday night. Kobe didn't even have one of his better games (16 points) as Vladimir Radmanovic (19) and Andrew Bynum (14) played well off the bench. Bryant did play well against Utah last season as he averaged 38.0 points on 53.8 percent shooting. The Lakers took two of three from Utah in 2006-07, including the only contest at Staples (132-102). As a home underdog (+2) tonight, LA looks like a good pick according to Dunkel, which has the Lakers favored straight up by 6. Dunkel Pick: LA Lakers (+2). Here are all of today's games.

                    LONG TIME COMING

It took 44 years and three overtimes for Navy to beat Notre Dame. The Midshipmen snapped an NCAA-record 43-game losing streak to the Fighting Irish with a 46-44 victory in triple overtime. It was the first time Navy (5-4) beat Notre Dame since a 35-14 win in 1963 when Roger Staubach was quarterback for the Midshipmen.

                    DYNAMIC DUO

Tim Tebow accounted for five touchdowns, Percy Harvin became the first player in school history with 100 yards rushing and receiving in the same game, and No. 18 Florida rebounded from its third loss in four outings with a 49-22 drubbing of Vanderbilt. Tebow was 22-of-27 passing for 281 yards with three touchdowns and he added 35 yards and two scores on the ground. Harvin ran 11 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns and caught nine passes for 110 yards.

                    STARBUCKS

The Buckeyes' defense stiffened and Chris Wells ran for three second-half scores to help Ohio State overcome a third-quarter deficit and beat Wisconsin 38-17. The Buckeyes are off to a 10-0 start (6-0 in the Big Ten). The victory was also Ohio State's 20th consecutive Big Ten win, eclipsing the mark it shared with Michigan (1990-92).

                    DOMINATED

Todd Reesing threw a school-record six touchdown passes and No. 8 Kansas battered Nebraska 76-39. Kansas swamped Nebraska 48-24 in the first half, setting a record for points scored against the hapless Huskers in the first two quarters. The Jayhawks (9-0, 5-0 Big 12) scored touchdowns on 10 straight possessions and rolled up the most points ever scored against Nebraska in its 117-year football history. Reesing was 30-of-41 for 354 yards, and his 23 touchdown passes also set a school single-season record. Brandon McAnderson ran for 119 yards and tied a school-record with four rushing TDs.

                    IN GOOD COMPANY

Georgia's Knowshon Moreno ran for 196 yards and three touchdowns and the No. 10 Bulldogs beat Troy 44-34. Moreno ended the day with 1,003 yards rushing this season to become only the second Georgia freshman to rush for 1,000 yards. Herschel Walker rushed for 1,616 yards as a freshman in 1980.

                    EIGHT IS ENOUGH

Chase Clement threw for six touchdowns and ran for two more and Rice scored the final 28 points in a 56-48 victory against Texas-El Paso. Clement, who set a Conference USA record by accounting for eight touchdowns, completed 32 of 58 passes for 395 yards and ran for 103 yards. The six passing touchdowns set a Rice record and tied the conference mark, and his 498 total yards were a school record.

                    STREAKS

Michigan beat Michigan State 28-24. The Wolverines have won eight straight, and have beaten the Spartans six straight times for the first time since the 1970s. ... Max Hall passed for 355 yards and three touchdowns and Brigham Young won its 12th straight Mountain West Conference game by beating Colorado State 35-16.

                    STRONG IN DEFEAT

Oklahoma State's Zac Robinson finished with a school-record 486 yards and three touchdowns in the Cowboys' 38-35 loss to Texas. ... Nebraska's Joe Ganz, was 25-of-50 for 405 yards and four touchdowns but the Cornhuskers lost to Kansas 76-39.

                    SLUMPING

Notre Dame lost to Navy 46-44 in triple overtime. It was school-record fifth straight home loss for the Irish. ... Michigan beat Michigan State 28-24. The Spartans have lost five of six. ... Arkansas State beat Florida International 27-24. FIU has the nation's longest Division I losing streak at 21 games.

                    SPEAKING

''A low point is when you get beat 38-0. That's a low point. A low point is when the game is going OK and one team is pulling away from you and making plays when you're not making plays. The low point for me is we didn't win the game.''- Notre Dame's Charlie Weis after Navy's 46-44 victory over the Irish. It was Notre Dame's school-record fifth straight home loss, and snapped a 43-game winning streak over the Midshipmen.

Sunday night football: SMU at Houston

SMU Mustangs at Houston Cougars (-19, 68 1/2)

Though I normally prefer game-specific matchups over betting statistics when choosing a side in college football, some numbers just shouldn't be ignored.

For example, the fact that the Houston Cougars were never favored by this many points during the Kevin Kolb era is an eye-opener, right?

But, here is a quick refresher. Kolb was the quarterback who started as a true freshman, shattered David Klinger's school passing records and scared the hell out of Houston's BCS-conference opponents in recent years.

Kolb threw for 30 touchdowns last season while being intercepted only four times en route to becoming a second-round selection in last spring's NFL Draft.

For all his heroics, however, Kolb never lifted the Cougars beyond a 17-point favorite. When the best quarterback in school history is nowhere near campus, I get a little antsy when I'm supposed to lay 19 points on the Cougars.

I'm not suggesting that Houston has suffered a dramatic letdown since Kolb went pro. The Cougars lead C-USA West and they've out-gained all eight opponents this year in total yards. That latter stat takes on greater significance when you realize Houston out-yarded both Oregon and Alabama this season.

I'm simply saying it's a lot of points to lay against an opponent like Southern Methodist, whose 0-4 C-USA record belies its close losses in recent weeks.

SMU pushed both UTEP and Tulane to overtime in recent weeks before falling short in the extra period. The Mustangs' toughest loss, though, came last week in Tulsa when they led the heavily-favored Golden Hurricane after 59 minutes of play.

The Mustangs had a fourth-and-goal scenario late in the fourth that could have cemented the upset if converted. They came up short, and Tulsa drove 99 yards in nine plays for the win. SMU backers were left to console themselves with their school's payout as a 13 1/2-point underdog.

In fact, the narrow loss in Tulsa was the second instance this season where SMU had been a double-digit underdog. The Mustangs also covered the spread as a 23-point dog in TCU.

Phil Bennett's team now travels to Robertson Stadium. SMU beat the Cougars as 11 1/2-point underdogs at Houston two seasons ago, 29-24, as Kolb suffered a rare sub-par start.

Of course, SMU's defense was respectable against all its 2005 opponents, not just Kolb and the Cougars. The Mustangs allowed an average of just 25.5 points per game that season, far superior to the 36.5 points per game they're conceding to opponents during the current campaign.

SMU may be hard-pressed to keep the Cougars below that average tally. Running back Anthony Alridge has flourished in his increased role this season, racking up a trio of 200-plus yard games on the ground. And, while this year's Cougars don't have Kolb, they have a QB tandem that's done well at the helm of a balanced offense.

Blake Joseph and Case Keenum have shared the workload in all eight games this season, so Cougars head coach Art Briles doesn't see any reason to change. The stronger-armed Joseph has made five starts, while the fleeter-footed Keenum has made three. Bettors won't know who'll start on Sunday, but they can count on both quarterbacks seeing significant action.

"Honestly, I'm not surprised it's worked out," Joseph told the Houston Chronicle this week. "Florida won the national championship last season and they had a two-quarterback system with Tim Tebow and Chris Leak. That worked pretty well for them, so why can't it work for someone else?"

Houston is scoring 37.1 points per game this season, so I won't suggest the two-headed QB experiment is a failure.

But compare the Cougars' scoring average to the total for Sunday's game. Oddmakers hung a 68 1/2-point total, which suggests they expect SMU to get its share of points. I agree.

The last time Houston played at home, the Cougars laid 22 1/2 points to Rice, which was 1-4 at the time. The Owls managed to score 48 points in a shootout loss and easily covered the spread.

It should be a Sunday night shootout in Houston. Justin Willis and the Mustangs have showed enough offensive force in recent weeks to make me believe they can keep up with their hosts. I'll take SMU with the points.
