  • Let's hold off on crowning the Celtics just yet, OK?

I know the Celtics bandwagon is filled to the brim, although they have yet to play a game.
I know they have been given an A+ for their offseason acquistions of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, perennial All-Stars.
I know they have three superstars now as their nucleus.
I know they have noone else on the team, including no bench at all, especially in the frontcourt.
I know that history has not been kind to teams in these situations, because the rules still only allow one ball on the floor at a time.
I know the Houston Rockets had Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Charles Barkley, all members of the NBA 's 50 Greatest of All-Time Team, assembled on the same team, and failed to reach the conference Finals.

Quite simply, this sport is more about team chemistry than any other team sport, in part due to the smaller size of the roster, and in part due to the smaller number of players on the floor at the same time. As the long season drags on, age is a factor, and the number of minutes distributed is key. I feel that the sum of the parts will not equate to an Atlantic Division title, or an Eastern Conference flag either, as the role players and bench players will be insufficient to support the 3 studs. They will make the playoffs, and there will be some highlights to be sure, but this experiment rarely works. Ask the Yankees.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try some time, you might find, you get what you need.

I love the 2 young guys in the starting lineup. PG Rondo is going to be a good one and i love C Perkins as well. They are really liking Big Baby Davis and his bulk in the middle and Tony Allen is a hell of a spark plug off the bench to go with James Posey and Eddie House. Scot Pollard will also eat up some good defensive minutes off the bench in the middle as well.

I agree, i don't think they are winning any title either but i think you will be surprised with how good their "Supporting Cast" will be.

I'm not so sure I agree with ya Gramps.

I think Rondo is an excellent point guard to put on the floor with these stars. James Posey is a guy that has been around a long time. Throw in Tony Allen and Eddie House and I think those are some guys that can play some minutes as well. They are weak in the middle, but I think Pollard, Scalabrine, and their draft pick Big Baby Glen Davis will do what they need to do to have their Big 3 carry them. Just my 2 cents

i don't think anyone is 'crowning' them yet.

they will be one of the best teams in the east, and in a league like the nba, 3 allstars in a starting 5 go a pretty far way.

The real problem is that all three of these guys like to shoot.

If Doc Rivers (who I think is a good coach) can manage this, they'll be very good.

The key on teams with three or four big scorers is a good point guard. THat'll be a big key for Boston.

They, however, are not better than the Bulls, especially if the Bulls get Kobe

Gris, Watching these guys in preseason, the big 3 were flowing very well together. Every report i've seen has said they have already become very good friends with each other and none of them have ever been a guy to have a me 1st attitude. They have 22 combined All Star appearances and they all want one thing and that is to win. I'm telling ya', they have all said and i've seen nothing from them in the past to believe otherwise, that all they care about is wins. They know they will take turns and they are 3 guys desperate for a playoff run. I see no problems at all with chemistry. The preseason they looked like they had been playing together forever.

As far as Rondo goes, he is a perfect fit for this team. He is great at pushing the ball (And they want to), and he is a really good defender. He is not a good shooter or scorer but that fits in perfectly. He has the speed and defense to counter the other PG and he is an excellent passer. The Center Perkins isn't a big time scorer yet either. He is great at eating up the paint, getting rebounds and blocking shots. Having 2 guys starting with the big 3 who don't need the ball is a big plus. I think the big 3 all get their 20 plus a night. You can also keep rotating 1 of the big 3 out and get them all some rest fairly easily. Leaving 2 on the court during most times will be big.

By "everyone crowning them already", I am referring to the mulletheads on talk-radio and all of the talking heads on TV sports. It is rare that these consensus early crownings work out, and if it were really this simple, every team would try to do this.

I submit as evidence, again, the '96-97 Houston Rockets, who were trying to get know-it-all Charles Barkley the elusive ring ( and he is the poster boy for talking it up and underachieving), and failed miserably as two of the three ended up hating each other. Three is an odd number, leaving one extra on the outside looking in. It may be harmonious now, when they are 0-0, but Barkley got MVP in '93 ( over MJ and Hakeem--a fucking j-o-k-e!) as the leader of a Suns team that had 9 current or former All-Stars, proving it is a team sport, and all of the hype and self-promotion and self-congratulation and self-adulation ends up in the bridesmaid slot.

The last team to pull this off was the 71-72 Lakers, who won 33 in a row, in a league half the size of the current one, with Wilt, Elgin Baylor, and the Logo all sharing the rock. This ain't no '72 Lakeshow, fo sho!

Garnett is so unselfish and Pierce learned how to pass. Ray Allen only being able to score is not going to bother them at all. Garnett is happy with 15 pts, 15 boards and 7 assists a game. Those are insane numbers and he will put them up nightly.

If you Celtic fans don't mind...I'm going to get me a Celtics hat until the Sonics move to OKC

The leadership KG brings to this team is priceless.

No NBA team has ever won a title with 3 20 point scorers over 30 years old. It is age and fatigue and lack of depth that will do them in.
