Friday's List of 13: Tell your statistics to shut up.............

    13) Patriots have started ten drives 80 or more yards from the end zone; they’ve scored TDs on seven of those ten drives, an amazing percentage. Put it this way; 32 NFL teams have a total of 62 TD drives of 80+ yards, and Patriots have seven.

    12) Dallas has started nine drives in enemy territory, most in NFL, part of why they’ve scored a league-high 18 TDs on 44 drives (41%).

    11) Cowboys also lead league with 22 plays from scrimmage of 20+ yards.

    10) Dallas and Colts, at +7, are tied for league lead in turnover ratio, with New Orleans (-8, in only three games) team with worst ratio.

    9) Detroit may be 3-1, but they have turned ball over 12 times and allowed 21 sacks. 13 takeaways have Lions where they are right now. Martz Madness always has its miscues.

    8) One of big reasons Miami is still winless is their failure on third downs; they’re last in NFL in 3rd down conversions (26.3%) on offense, and defense (55.6%).

    7) League leaders in 3rd down conversions are Oakland on offense (52.5%) and Chiefs on defense (27.8%).

    6) Who is worst team in red zone?: Try the Rams, who have gotten to the opponents’ 20-yard line ten times, with just 33 points to show for it. Terrible. Now we get to see if Frerotte can do better. He could use some healthy linemen.

    5) Panthers, Browns’ opponents have both started 11 drives in enemy territory, most in the league.

    4) 49ers have gone 3/out 47% (23-49) of time, and with Alex Smith still out, that doesn’t figure to approve anytime soon.

    3) Bears (48.9%), Steelers (45.2%) have forced the highest percentage of 3/outs.

    2) Part of Denver’s problem is that they’ve forced opponents to throw only 29 incomplete passes in four games, a very low number. Five teams have already forced 60+ IPs.

    1) If you look at each team’s record on first drive of each half, you see the Patriots have outscored opponents 41-7 on those eight drives; Denver (3-24), Jets (3-21) have done worst on first drives.

Louisville won 29-10 at NC State last week, after allowing total of 120 pts in previous three games, but Wolfpack has lost ten in row vs I-A teams, so not impressed. Utah is 0-2 on road this yr, losing 24-7 at Oregon State (was 7-7 at half), 27-0 at UNLV. Utes scored 44-34 in their two wins, 7-12-0 in their losses. Saturday's college football info
            Top 10 games

Then-unbeaten Rutgers went to Cincinnati LY and came home a 30-11 loser (-6.5), as Bearcats averaged 18.5 pards/pass attempt, a ridiculously high figure (277 yds/15 passes/no sacks). Rutgers got upset by Maryland last week, 34-24, as Terps outrushed the Scarlet Knights, 239-82. UC is playing its third road game in four weeks (Miami, San Diego State were first two) so fatigue could be factor for explosive Bearcats. We have a selection below.

Ron Zook has Illinois 4-1 after win vs Penn State; Illini has run ball for average of 294 yds/game in last three games, but they've lost four in row vs Wisconsin, losing 30-24 in Madison LY, after they had led 21-3 at one point. Badgers are 9-5 vs the spread as road dog, Illini is 2-6 in last eight tries as home favorite. In only other road game this year, Badgers won 20-13 at UNLV, scoring winning TD in last 3:00 of game.

Butch Davis faces his former Miami team as Hurricanes come to town winners of three straight (by 14-17-10); Miami is 1-5 vs the spread in their last six tries as road favorite. UNC is 8-4 vs the spread in last dozen tries as home dog; they're 0-4 vs I-A clubs, with three losses by seven or less pts. Home side won last three series meetings, with 'canes losing 31-28 in last visit here (-22).

Kansas State has already won at Texas, scared Auburn, picking off six passes in those two games; now they face rival Kansas, which is 4-0 against lamest schedule you've seen (two squads from MAC, Fla International and a I-AA). Home side won four in row in series, with Jayhawks (9-13 as recent road dog) losing last two visits here, 42-6/12-3. Kansas had 247 rushing yards in last year's 39-20 win in Lawrence.

Georgia won its last three visits to Knoxville, taking 41-14/27-14 verdicts in last two; Vols returned favor between hedges in '06, crushing Dawgs 51-33 in wild comeback, fourth straight series win for road side. Tennessee has been awful home favorite, as 11-27 spread record indicates. Vols had last week off, Georgia is playing for sixth straight Saturday; they're 23-3 SU on road.

Oklahoma, Texas lost on same day last week for first time in last eight years; Longhorns won last two series games, 45-12/28-10, after Sooners had won previous five meetings. Texas gave up a pair of return TDs and a defensive TD last week; they struggled at Central Florida (35-32) in their other road game. Sooners had scored 51+ pts every game before blowing 24-7 lead in Boulder. Both sides have very strong records coming off a loss.

Home side won last five Nebraska-Missouri games, as Huskers lost last two visits to Columbia, both by 41-24 score. Nebraska scored 107 pts in last three games, but shows cracks, trailing at half last week vs Iowa State, week after escaping with 41-40 win at home vs Ball State. Mizzou hasn't played D-I foe in three wks; they've allowed 34-25-24 points in three games vs I-A foes.

Florida lost at home to Auburn 20-17 last week, now visit Death Valley at night, where LSU wins 80% of time. Tigers had sloppy win at Tulane last week (led 10-9 at half). Gators are 6-0 as road dog since '03, but are 4-9-1 vs spread in game after their last 14 losses- they've yet to hold I-A opponent under 20 points. LSU has given up only 32 points in five games, is +11 in turnovers.

Ohio State takes 5-0 record on road; they've already won games at Washington (33-14), Minnesota (30-7) and are averaging cool 262.8 rushing yards/game. Buckeyes covered seven of last ten tries as road favorite. Purdue is also 5-0, having outscored last three opponents 78-3 in first half. Boilers are 4-2 vs spread in its last six tries as home dog. Purdue's schedule hasn't been strong, so we'll see if they're worthy against strong OSU run game.

Arizona State won first road game 41-3 last week, moved to 5-0, now visit another one of Erickson's former homes; home side is 4-1 in last five series games, with ASU winning last visit here in '05, 27-24 (-2). Washington State covered six of last nine as dog at home, ASU covered five of last six as road favorite. Write-up

                    Week 15 CFL games

BC Lions (9-3-1) @ Winnipeg (8-4-1) -- Bombers upset BC 22-21 back in Week 7 (+6), handing Lions second loss in row after the 5-0 start; BC has now won three games in row, scoring 40-37-42 pts-- they're 4-1-1 on road, losing only at Montreal. Winnipeg won last four home games, by 18-2-19-2 points; they snuck by lowly Hamilton last week, for third win last four games. Four of last five BC road games went over the total.

Edmonton (5-7-1) @ Toronto (6-7) -- Argos went to Alberta and upset Eskimos 18-11 last week, winning fourth game in last five tries- they're just 3-3 at home, but won last two at home, by 13,8 points. Edmonton is 2-4 on road, with losses by 20,40,7,11 pts- they played low-scoring games (16-10/11-18) last two weeks, as three of their last four games stayed under total. Toronto is 3-2 vs spread as a favorite this season.

Hamilton (2-11) @ Montreal (6-7) -- Alouettes are 2-0 this year vs TiCats, winning 29-20 in Week 3 at Hamilton (-6), then 27-9 on this field six weeks later (-4), but Als lost last three games in row overall, allowing 32 ppg. Hamilton is 0-7 on road, losing by 28-4-18-2-18-13-2 points. Under is 5-2 in last seven Hamilton games. Montreal won four of their last five home games.

Saskatchewan (8-5) @ Calgary (6-6-1) -- Roughriders waxed the Stampeders 49-8 in Week 2 in Regina (-1) but lost rematch three weeks ago at McMahon, 44-22 (-3). Since that win, Stampeders lost at woeful Hamilton, then got whacked 42-9 at BC; they are 4-1-1 at home, losing only to Lions 42-37. Riders snapped skid at three last week, beating Montreal; they're 3-3 on road, losing last two away games at Winnipeg (34-15), Calgary (44-22).

                      CFL
Makin’ Canadian bacon: Week 15 CFL picks

BC Lions at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+2, 51 ½)
                      Friday, Oct. 5, 8 p.m. ET

The Lions have reclaimed the West Division lead and been the class of the league the last three weeks. BC backers are paying the price for the team’s success, laying points as they visit the East Division leaders.

Kicker / punter Paul McCallum didn’t practice on Tuesday due to a bruised hip. If he can’t go, head coach Wally Buono’s options are a slotback or an untested junior player. In the meantime, there’s a 90 percent chance of rain in Winnipeg on Friday with a northeasterly wind clocking in at 20 km/h. The Bombers might actually have the kicking advantage, which is saying something when you consider their 15 missed field goals this season.

But the Bombers’ offensive line injuries will have a bigger impact on the game than McCallum’s potential absence. There will be new players in new slots on the line and that won’t help Charles Roberts regain the league’s rushing lead.

BC claims the more potent running game these days with Joe Smith grinding out the yards behind a healthy Lions’ line. It makes Jarious Jackson feel more and more comfortable as the starting quarterback and it makes me feel more and more comfortable about backing a team led by, well, Jarious Jackson.

                      Pick: Lions –2

Edmonton Eskimos at Toronto Argonauts (-11, 48 ½)
                      Saturday, Oct. 6, 3 p.m. ET

Toronto played a few games without its No. 1 quarterback and looked pitiful. Is it time for Edmonton to do the same now that Ricky Ray has a long-term injury? Stefan LeFors makes his first CFL start on Saturday at Rogers Centre and won’t have the healthiest Eskimos offense to help him. Fullback Mathieu Bertrand is out while tailback Tyler Ebell and receivers Jason Tucker and Kamau Peterson will play, but are all banged-up.

Edmonton has imported a couple of linemen from south of the 49th parallel to help with the running game on Saturday, but it’s hard to imagine the revamped line being cohesive right from its inception.

There’s also the fact that the Argonauts beat the Eskimos, at Commonwealth Stadium no less, just last weekend. The 11-point spread is problematic. The Boatmen only have one truly lopsided home win this season and that came back in Week 3.

Edmonton’s last two games have both ranked among the league’s lowest-scoring matchups in 2007. Add that to Toronto’s league-leading eight games playing under the total and I have a reason to avoid taking a side.

                      Pick: Under 48 ½

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Montreal Alouettes (-9, 49 ½)
                      Monday, Oct. 8, 1 p.m. ET

Hamilton +9 would look like a bargain if we go by the teams’ performances from the last two weeks. The Tiger Cats beat Calgary in Week 13 as 7 ½-point home underdogs, then easily covered the 10 ½-point spread in Winnipeg last week. The Alouettes, on the other hand, have dropped three games (and paydays) in a row. But there’s more to consider than their recent results on the field. It’s hard to determine, for example, which East Division non-power has the more poisoned atmosphere these days.

New quarterback Casey Printers hasn’t won over his Ticats teammates and head coach Charlie Taaffe openly mused to reporters this week that he can’t decide whether running back Jesse Lumsden is having bad luck with injuries or is simply fragile.

In Montreal, linebacker Timothy Strickland suggests that Jim Popp took on too much responsibility as the Als’ head coach and GM, suggesting that the team no longer has a winning attitude.

Montreal was shafted by CFL schedule-makers this week, as the Als suit up in Toronto on Friday after this holiday Monday game. They’re in danger of choking away what was once a sure playoff spot if they don’t right their ship. Based on their current form, however, I can’t give away more than a touchdown with them, even at home.

                      Pick: Tiger Cats +9

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Calgary Stampeders (+7 ½, 53)
                      Monday, Oct. 8, 4 p.m. ET

Calgary smoked the Riders 44-22 as recently as Week 12 but a couple of changes have since gone down in Cowtown. Most importantly is the injury to Henry Burris.

Edmonton bettors haven’t seen much of Ricky Ray’s backups, so they can always rely on optimism. Calgary bettors, however, have seen Burris’ backups in action and it hasn’t been pretty. Akili Smith? Barrick Nealy? It doesn’t really matter, especially with Eddie Davis finally back in the Riders’ secondary. Saskatchewan shut down Montreal’s ground game last week and can do the same on Monday by loading the defensive front and daring Calgary to pass.

This week also represents a unique defensive challenge for the Stamps. Head coach Tom Higgins and GM Jim Barker canned defensive coordinator Denny Creehan shortly after last week’s 42-9 loss to BC.

Creehan’s sudden departure reminds the players how easily they can be dropped if they don’t get their act together. This is a dangerous call considering their results this year, but I’m counting on the Stampeders to tighten up on ‘D’ and make this a reasonably tight game.

                      Pick: Under 53

                      Last week: 4-0
                      Year to date: 24-28

                        Dunkel Index

                        Atlanta at Tennessee
Tennessee finished last season by winning six of its last seven and has carried that momentum into this year. The Titans (2-1) are off to their best start since 2003 -- the last time they made the playoffs. They have the second best rushing offense in the NFL (173.7 ypg) and QB Vince Young continues to improve. Young ran his record to 10-6 as a starter by throwing for two TDs in a Monday night win at New Orleans (31-14) in Tennessee's last game. Jeff Fisher's defense was the story of that game, though, as the Titans forced five turnovers, including three Keith Bulluck interceptions. Atlanta did show some offense in a 26-16 win over Houston at home last weekend. But on the road, Bobby Petrino's club has been outscored 37-10. And the Falcons have struggled against Tennessee in recent years, dropping the last four contests. Warrick Dunn has been held to just 79 yards on 38 attempts in his last three games against the Titans. Tennessee comes into this game fresh off a bye week and looks like a good pick to cover (-8) according to Dunkel, which has the Titans favored by 15. Dunkel Pick: Tennessee (-8). Here are all of this week's picks.

                              Week 5 2007 NFL season

                              Sunday, October 7

Panthers (2-2) @ Saints (0-3) —NO off to horrible start, allowing 103 points in losses by 31,28,17 points; they’ve covered just one of last seven as favorite coming off a bye and are already -8 in turnovers, with ten giveaways in only three games, as well as no sacks yet and a -21 IP ratio (47-26). Loss of McAllister makes Saints more of a passing team. Carolina hurting with backup QB Carr; he averaged 2.7 yds/pass attempt in dismal 20-7 loss to Bucs last week (they averaged 3.6/4.4/2.7 in last three games). Road team is 4-0 in Panther games this year with Carolina scoring 27 points each in wins at St Louis, Atlanta (combined 1-7 record).

Jaguars (2-1) @ Chiefs (2-2) — Herm’s Chiefs are playing solid defense, allowing four TDs on 44 drives, zero points on 14 drives that started 80+ yards from goal line (only NFL team at 0.00); they have 11 sacks, 10 takeaways and lead league allowing just 27.8% of third downs to be converted- they outscored last three foes 37-3 in second half. Jax lost five of last seven post-bye games, even though they were favored in six of those games. Jaguars allowed just 21 points in winning last two games before the bye, including win at Denver where they outrushed Broncos 186-47 (Broncos ran just 41 plays the whole game).

Lions (3-1) @ Redskins (2-1) — Erratic Lions either implode (they trailed 42-21 at half in Philly) or explode (they scored 34 points in fourth quarter last week). Detroit is 0-20 in DC, but Lions have 13 takeaways in four games, but Kitna making enough plays to make up for 21 sacks and 12 giveaways, typical Martz Madness stats. Martz first made his name as QB coach here with Skins, where he coached Trent Green. Redskins won nine of their last 11 post-bye games, winning last two years, by FG each; they’ve allowed 5.2/ 4.3/5.4 ypa in their three games. Lions lost eight of last ten pre-bye games, allowing 30,38 pts last two years.

Falcons (1-3) @ Titans (2-1) —Atlanta scored 10 points in two road losses, then scored 46 pts at home last two weeks; they’re hopeful Harrington (54-73/546 passing last two weeks) getting knack of offense, but Falcons are 29th in red zone offense (3.58), even when they’ve moved ball well. Falcons are only NFL club that has yet to start a drive in opponents’ territory. Road team won all three Titan games, with Tennessee losing 22-20 at home to Colts—they scored 28+ points in four of last five post-bye games. Titans are only NFL team that has yet to score point on drive that started 80+ yards from opponents’ end zone (7 drives).

Dolphins (0-4) @ Texans (2-2) — Miami playing better on road, losing both games by FG, but they’ve allowed 37-31-35 points in last three games (12 TDs on 28 drives) and are last in NFL on third down, both on offense (26.3%) and defense (55.6%), which results in lot of short fields for opponents (already yielded four TD drives of 40 yards or less). Fish have just three takeaways, five sacks in four games. Houston fading with Johnson/Green hurt, but they also have zero takeaways in last two games, after having seven in their two wins. Texans averaged 7.4+ ypa in three of four games. Last three games for both sides all went over the total.

Seahawks (3-1) @ Steelers (3-1) — Pittsburgh been dominant at home (26-3/27-16), but were held to 77 rushing yards last week, after averaging 198.3 ypg in three wins; they had 11 penalties last week, after total of 11 in the three wins. Steelers have 14 sacks, eight takeaways, but Seattle has 13/10; Hawks have allowed just four TDs on 42 drives, while forcing 42 3/outs. Seattle is fumbled snap away from 4-0 start; they have seven takeaways in last two games, are 5-7 as road dog last 3+ years. Steelers lost four of last five pre-bye games, with only win by four points. Both these teams lost at Arizona for only loss. NFC West road dogs are 2-5 vs. spread out of their division.

Browns (2-2) @ Patriots (4-0) — Old friends from Parcells’ Giant staff meet here; only two teams in NFL have more TDs than spunky Browns (14). New England playing with chip on its shoulder, winning games by 24-24-31-21 points, scoring 37 pg- they’ve had ten drives start 80+ yards from goal line, and scored seven TD’s, with five of those drives 90+ yards; the entire NFL has 62 TD drives of 80+ yds this season. Cleveland scored 51-24-27 pts in last three games; only blocked FG off skin infield at Oakland is keeping them from 3-1 record. Patriots playing on short week after thrashing Bengals. Both sides have had three of four games go over total.

Cardinals (2-2) @ Rams (0-4) — Redbirds been juggling QB’s successfully, using Leinart in running spots, former Ram (and still a St Louis icon) Warner in passing spots. Must-win game for 2-2 Arizona team, with two last-minute losses, vs. dysfunctional Ram squad starting Frerotte at QB for first time, with RB Jackson and five guys on OL all out injured. Arizona lost both its road games in last minute, but Rams been outscored 72-9 in second half of games this season, and are probably worst team in NFL, although they do get CB Brown (suspension) back here. Will be interesting to see if Leinart spouting off about juggling QB’s will change anything for Cardinals.

Jets (1-3) @ Giants (2-2) — Both teams at home here, although it is GIANTS Stadium; Big Blue defense awakened in last two weeks, allowing just 20 points, keeping both foes under 50% passing and sacking McNabb 12 times last week. Manning is moving chains (Giants 48.1% on 3rd down) but fading in red zone (3.86, 26th) partly because they’re struggling to run ball (94-96-83 yards last three games). Jets allowed 33 pg in pair of Swamp games; their lack of sacks, takeaways (three of each) has hurt their field position (Jets, Saints are only teams not to start drive in enemy territory). These teams are 2nd, 3rd in NFL in penalty yard ratio (Giants +129, Jets +89).

Bucs (3-1) @ Colts (4-0) — Indy has 16 plays of 20+ yards this year, will be tested by Buc defense that has allowed five. The last time these teams met was on Monday night in ’03 when Bucs led by 19 at home with 5:00 left but somehow lost in OT, as Dungy beat his former team on his birthday. Bucs come in here on three-game win streak, where they’ve allowed 14-3-7 points. Obviously, both teams run same defense—Bucs allowed only one TD in last two games, and that came with 0:23 left in Carolina last week, in garbage time of 20-7 win. Bucs had 182-189 rushing yards last two games, but are without star RB Williams now (knee). Oft-travelled Garcia enjoying another good start to season.

Chargers (1-3) @ Broncos (2-2) — Two floundering sides meet here; Denver allowed 200-186-226 rushing yards in their last three games losing last two by 9,18 pts. San Diego imploded at home vs Chiefs last week, outscored 24-0 in second half; in their last three games, they’ve allowed 38-31-30 points and gave up 7+ ypa in each loss. Denver has seven TD’s, 13 FGA’s, while allowing 11 TD’s, four FGA, so that’s problem. Tomlinson had 100+ rushing yards at half last week, then had 20 in second half, so they need to keep feeding him ball. Denver’s two wins are by combined total of four points; they’ve been -13/-18 in field position last two games, making it even harder on young QB Cutler.

Ravens (2-2) @ 49ers (2-2) — Injury to Alex Smith leaves former Raven Dilfer facing former mates, week after Niners had 22 net passing yards in ugly 23-3 home loss to Seattle. Baltimore is 0-2 on road, giving up 27 points in both games (at Bengals, Browns); they have eight giveaways in two losses, one in two wins, both of which came at home. 49ers been outscored 40-13 in first half of last three games; they’ve converted just 27.3% of 3rd down plays (31st) and went 3/out on 23 of 49 drives (46.9%, 32nd). As usual, offense is an issue for Ravens, who scored five TDs with 13 FGA’s, second-worst ratio in NFL- they also are last in league with 267 penalty yards. This could be an ugly game.

Bears (1-3) @ Packers (4-0) — Desperate times for NFC champion Bears, who are searching for a QB; they’ve turned ball over 14 times (-5, 30th) averaged 2.8/3.7/2.8 ypa in last three games, and thrown 32 more IPs than their opponents (32nd). They gave up 34 points in 4th quarter last week, after giving up 31 points in second half vs Dallas the week before. Meanwhile, its all good for Packer squad that is 4-0 despite not running ball for more than 83 yards in any game this season—they scored 29 pg, averaged 7.2+ ypa in last three weeks, and have won battle of field position in all four games. In last two games, Bears threw 91 passes, been sacked nine times and run ball only 45 times, as it continues to be dreadful fall for Turner family.

                              Monday, October 8

Cowboys (4-0) @ Bills (1-3) — Dallas off to red-hot start, winning by 10-17-24-28 points; Pokes have outscored opponents 107-40 in second half, and already have NFL-high 18 TD’s (six FGA)- they have big game in six days, hosting Patriots, but national TV spotlight should keep their attention here. Bills got first win over Jets last week; their two home games were decided by total of four points- they’ve allowed 14.5 pg at home, 32 on road. Bills need better defense on 3rd down; they’ve allowed 50% of 3rd plays to convert, bad news vs. mobile Romo and Dallas offense that is 24-49 (49%) on 3rd down. Given success Dallas has had in second half, Bills need to keep their defense off field as much as possible.
