          Write-up

          ----------------------------------------------------------------------

          Saturday's college football info

          Top 10 games

Iowa has good defense, but they've scored only two TDs in last two games, getting outrushed 329-171, converting just 5-29 on third down. Indiana upset Hawkeyes 31-28 LY; they're 3-1 after Illinois shut them down LW, 27-14. Hoosiers are just 12-24 as a road dog since '00, but coach Hoeppner had them on right track before he passed away. Iowa won its only home game this year 35-0; all four Hawkeye games stayed under the total.

South Carolina changes QBs after 28-16 loss at rainy LSU week ago; Gamecocks scoring just 20 ppg in three games vs I-A foes, 16 ppg in SEC play. Carolina covered five of last seven after loss Miss State covered seven of nine off a win, and they're on three game win streak, including win at Auburn. SC won this game a year ago 15-0 (-7), holding MSU to 8-23/82 passing. Bulldogs do have QB issues; they were just 5-18/41 passing at Auburn.

Air Force underdog for fourth straight week, with two outright wins and 31-6 loss at BYU last week; Flyboys lost four in a row to Navy, with three wins by 3 pts, one by seven Navy gave up 36 points in the first half to Duke last week, rallied for 46-43 win behind backup Bryant, but that is huge red flag- they lost to Ball State week before, but Cards almost beat Nebraska, that looks better now. Middies are 2-7 in last nine tries as home favorite.

Home side won last four Oregon-Cal games, with Bears losing last two visits to Eugene (21-17/27-20ot); Bears had 235 rushing yards and +3 turnover ration in LY’s 45-24 win; they average 219.5 rushing yards/game, are struggling in only road games, giving up 458 yards to Colorado State team that is on 10-game losing skid. Ducks scored 48-39-52-55 points this season, with 21 points the closest win; they have run ball for 301.3 yds/game. Both teams are +7 in turnovers. Oregon has outscored foes 66-17 in second half of games. Cal is 0-3 as road dog the last 2+ yrs.

Alabama is off pair (1-1) of draining SEC home games that were both decided in final seconds, while Florida State had last week off after sluggish 16-6 win at Colorado (two Seminoles players were arrested after bar tight in Tallahassee LW, so they put their bye week to good use). FSU is really-poor 10-44 on third down so far this year, testament to Weatherford’s inability to make plays in passing game- we’ll see what Fisher, who coached for Saban at LSU, changed during bye week. Bama allowed 449 rushing yards in last two games.

UCLA backup QB Cowan hurt his knee LW vs Washington and is out here, meaning starter Olsen is back as the starter, ready or not, after missing LW’s game (concussion); the 3rd-stringer is walk-on, so tough spot for Bruin squad that won last four tilts vs. Beavers, last three by average score of 40-23- they’re 5-1 in last six visits to Corvallis. Bruins allowed 65 2nd half points in last three games, not good. Oregon State had 19-0 lead in first quarter at Tempe last week, still lost by 12; they’ve thrown 13 INTs in three games vs. D-I foes. UCLA ran ball for 671 yards in their two Pac-10 wins.

Illinois lost 26-12 at Penn State LY (+18) but outgained the Lions 358-184, with 202-40 edge in rushing yards, which helps explain low spread here, even though Paterno won last visit here 63-10 (in ‘05). PSU got off to 3-0 start playing stiff teams, lost 14-9 at Michigan LW, scoring nine points vs team that had given up 73 in its first three games. Illinois is scoring 34 ppg vs. I-A foes, putting up 34 vs Missouri in their only loss; they’vs. run ball for 666 yards in last two games. Still question the accuracy of QB Williams, who completed less than half his passes in two of last three games.

Run-happy Wisconsin is 4-0, but has struggled, beating UNLV in last 3:00, going into halftime tied with Citadel, and last week, nipping Iowa 17-13, despite -3 turnover ratio. Michigan State is also 4-0, but in last two games, has completed just 25-52 passes- Spartans outscored last three foes 31-9 in second half. Teams haven’t played last two years- Spartans lost last visit here 56-21 in ’03 (+1.5). State won 31-14 at Notre Dame last week, but this is much tough test-- Badgers won 12 of last 13 Big 11 home games all three of their lined games this season stayed under total.

Underdog is 16-2 vs spread in the Clemson-Georgia Tech series; nine of last 11 series games were won by five or less points. The Tigers move ball as well as anyone in country, gaining 219 ypg on ground, 249 in air vs. I-A teams they faced- they held Tech to total of 13 points in their last two visits here. Jackets allowed 52 points in losing last two games; they’ve been positive in turnovers in all four games, mainly because last week was first time this season they coughed ball up. Tigers had 321 rushing yards in LY’s 31-7 home win vs. Tech, and have six INTs in last two games, but they better not look ahead to next week’s home game vs Virgina Tech. Jackets are just 7-40 on third down in last three games.

USC won last five games vs Washington, winning last two trips here, 43-23/51-24, but they struggled LY vs the Huskies, getting outrushed 167-148, while gaining just 22 yards more than U-Dub in 26-20 win (-19). It appears USC is better this year, running ball for 734 yards in three games, including 313 in tough Nebraska stadium. Washington is better with Locker at QB, but they’ve given up 74 points in last three halves, and 596 rushing yards in last two games. Trojans are just 8-10 vs spread in last 18 tries as favorite on road. Huskies been outscored 64-28 in second half of last two games; they allowed UCLA to run kick back for TD last week, as well as giving them defensive score.

          Rest of Card

-- Duke had 35 points at the half last week but still lost 46-43 at Navy (+7); they’ve covered last three weeks as an underdog. Miami is 2-1 as favorite, faces old friend Butch Davis next week, could be looking ahead.

-- Virginia Tech won last three games vs North Carolina by 31-12 average; Hokies had four INTs and blocked a punt LY. Heels allowed 31 ppg in losing last three weeks, 35.5 pg on road.

-- UConn hammered Pitt last week, 34-14 (+8.5); they’re 4-0, with a +9 turnover ratio. Akron lost its two road games by 18,17 points, allowing 30.5 pg, 534 rushing yards.

-- Army scored 13.7 pg in three games vs. I-A foes. Temple lost its last 24 road games; they’re 0-4 this year, with losses by 11,35,5,13 pts. If you put a gun to my head and made me pick one of these teams, I’d probably tell you to shoot.

-- Ball State gained 588 yards at Nebraska last week, lost 41-40, now faces Nebraska alum Gill, whose Buffalo Bulls are 1-3, with losses by 35,21,13 points, with a 42-7 win at Temple.

-- Northern Illinois won its last five games vs Central Michigan, winning last two visits to this site, 40-24/31-28, but Huskies are 1-3, with only win 42-35 at Idaho last week, when they had two defensive TDs and another on special teams.

-- Michigan won its last four games vs Northwestern, winning last two vists to Evanston, 41-10/33-17. Wolverines are 9-3 vs. spread off win, are expected to get QB Henne back. Wildcats lost to Duke two weeks ago, then 58-7 at Ohio State last week, trailing 45-0 at half.

UK goes to South Carolina next week, so they’re human if they don’t let down at least a little here.

-- Arkansas ran ball for 639 yards in last two games and lost both, bad news for undermanned North Texas squad that is 0-3, losing by average score of 51-20; they’ve thrown three INTs in all three games. UNT has been outscored 78-30 in second halves of games.

-- Troy scored 89 points in winning last two games; they were down 14-0 early at ULL last week, still won by 17. Home side won both their games vs ULM, with Warhawks losing 24-19 in last visit here. Monroe is 0-3, allowing 46 pg, but at least they cashed some big checks.

Week 5 betting news & notes

Penn State Nittany Lions at Illinois Fighting Illini (+3, 46)

The Illini are only getting a field goal for Saturday’s game despite the 63-10 thrashing the Nittany Lions laid down in their last trip to Champaign in 2005.

Oddsmakers may be predicating the line on Illinois’ results against schools it has faced both this year and last. The Illini lost to Syracuse and Indiana at home in 2006. However, it beat each school handily as a road favorite this time around, racking up 894 total yards of offense and 68 points in the process.

Penn State’s offense has taken a downturn away from Happy Valley. The Nits have averaged only 13.6 points over their seven games away from Beaver Stadium since the start of 2006 and are 2-4-1 against the spread (ATS) in those games.

Florida Atlantic Owls at Kentucky Wildcats (-24, 67)

Kentucky’s the hottest thing in college football, going 9-1 straight-up (SU) and 8-1 ATS over its last 10 games. That includes a handful of upsets along the way. The tough part for the school’s backers now is to score a payday with the ‘Cats heavily favored.

The Wildcats must maintain their intensity after back-to-back draining wins over Louisville and Arkansas. In addition, SEC East rival South Carolina is looming on the schedule.

The Owls might be the perfect opponent to prevent a Kentucky letdown. Florida Atlantic saves itself for its conference battles and is 1-6 ATS when visiting BCS-conference opponents since joining top-level football in 2004. The average score in those road “payday” games has been 47-9 in favor of FAU’s opponents.

Iowa State Cyclones at Nebraska Cornhuskers (-21 ½, 56 ½)

The line suggests it will be a mismatch in the Midwest, but favored Nebraska has some defensive questions to answer before assuming its third straight win over Big 12 North rival Iowa State.

Conceding 49 points to USC is one thing, but allowing 40 to Ball State is quite another. The Huskers’ recent shootouts with both schools add to a long line of high-scoring games in Lincoln. Twelve of Nebraska’s last 14 home games with a total have gone ‘over’ the closing total, including all three this season.

Iowa State scored 35 points in its only road game this season and has already shocked another big Midwestern rival this year when it toppled Iowa as a 17 ½-point home underdog.

Louisville Cardinals at North Carolina State Wolfpack (+8, 71)

N.C. State might not be in a position to move the ball against Louisville’s porous pass defense. Wolfpack quarterback Harrison Beck has connected on less than 50 percent of his passes in his last three starts, tossing six interceptions without a single touchdown during that span.

Bettors should also keep in mind that N.C. State hasn’t scored more than 24 points against an FBS opponent since its 2004 season finale against East Carolina.

The Wolfpack, 16-30-1 ATS since 2004, gave up 608 total yards of offense to Clemson last week. That’s more than the Cardinals have allowed in any game this year.

Maryland Terrapins at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (-18, 47)

Maryland has suffered consecutive letdowns, failing to truly challenge West Virginia two weeks ago before collapsing at Wake Forest last Saturday. The losses drop the Terps to 4-12 ATS in their last 16 lined games.

Conversely, Rutgers is proving to be as safe a bet as Maryland is hazardous. The Knights are 12-3-1 ATS since the start of last year and 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games as a home favorite.

Rutgers linebackers Ryan D’Imperio and Blair Bines are back in the mix and ready to boost the Knights’ already formidable defense. The Knights have allowed only 60 total points over their last seven non-conference games.

UNLV Rebels at Nevada Wolf Pack (-3 ½, 51 ½)

The total remains high in the battle for the Fremont Cannon despite the recent low scores in this state rivalry. Only one of the teams’ last 10 meetings has exceeded 51 ½ points. UNLV is also one of the nation’s top under bets, with all four of its games this season slipping under the total.

The Rebels have found success on the ground this year, winning both games when they complied more rushing yards than passing yards. UNLV passed for more yards than it rushed in all 12 games last year and went only 2-10 SU in the process.

The loss of incumbent quarterback Rocky Hinds over the summer was expected to cripple the Rebels, but redshirt freshman Travis Dixon has played as well as could have been expected. UNLV is 3-1 ATS this year.

North Texas Mean Green at Arkansas Razorbacks (-35 ½, 67)

The Razorbacks are laying a ton of points for having such a banged-up offense. Star running back Darren McFadden will suit up Saturday, but he skipped Tuesday’s practice to have a precautionary MRI on his sore knee.

Meanwhile, top receiver Marcus Monk is still sidelined and freshman split end Crosby Tuck, who has two of the team’s four receiving touchdowns this year, is out for the season with a broken elbow. Expected starting tight end Ben Cleveland was lost for the season before it even started with a neck injury. Dependable third-string tailback Michael Smith has been suspended by the team.

Arkansas is 0-3 ATS when favored by three touchdowns or more since the start of last season.

UAB Blazers at Tulsa Golden Hurricane (-22 ½, 69 ½)

Saturday marks the third time this season in which the Blazers have been a heavy underdog. UAB’s first-half performance has determined its backers’ fate in the team’s first two games in the role.

The Blazers trailed Michigan State 42-0 midway through the second quarter in the season opener at East Lansing and never had a chance at covering the spread. However, a week later in Tallahassee, UAB jumped to a 17-3 lead in the opening half and lost a close game as a 37-point underdog to Florida State.

This is Tulsa’s first game as an overwhelming favorite with Todd Graham as head coach. Tulsa was 5-5 ATS as a double-digit favorite with Steve Kragthorpe as their head coach.

                College Football Gameday

There’s only one ranked matchup on the Saturday college football schedule, but it should be a good one as No. 6 California takes on No. 11 Oregon in a Pac-10 showdown. Also worth checking out on Saturday is Auburn at No. 4 Florida, and No. 13 Clemson at Georgia Tech.

                California (6) at Oregon (11)

The Golden Bears remain undefeated on the season after downing Arizona 45-27 as a 14.5-point favorite last week. Quarterback Nate Longshore completed 16-of-30 passes for 235 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Running back Justin Forsett paced the offense, rushing for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 23 carries.

The Ducks are also undefeated this season after they ripped Stanford 55-31 as an 18.5-point favorite last week. Oregon QB Dennis Dixon was unstoppable in the win while completing 27-of-36 passes for 367 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Dixon also ran in for a touchdown. Jonathan Stewart rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Cameron Colvin stepped up in place of injured receiver Brian Paysinger with eight receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown. Jaison Williams also had a big game with seven catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

The Golden Bears crushed the Ducks 45-24 as a 5.5-point favorite when they faced off last season. The Ducks are a 6.5-point favorite in Saturday’s game.

                Auburn at Florida (4)

The Tigers rebounded from two straight losses last week with a 55-20 drubbing of New Mexico State as a 16.5-point favorite. The Tigers' offense got rolling right from the start as quarterback Brandon Cox completed 13-of-19 passes for 135 yards with a touchdown pass and a TD run. The ground game was especially strong for Auburn, as Ben Tate and Mario Fanin both rushed for more than 100 yards. Tate racked up 111 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, while Fanin had three touchdowns and 103 yards on 15 carries.

The Gators got their first scare of the season last week, as they barely got past Mississippi 30-24 as a 24-point favorite. Tim Tebow was practically the entire Florida offense in the win as the Gators’ QB threw for 261 yards with two touchdowns and also ran for 166 yards on 22 carries with two more touchdowns. Percy Harvin led all Gators’ receivers with 11 receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown despite suffering a hip pointer. The hip injury may limit Harvin this week, but he should still play.

Auburn was one of only two teams to defeat the Gators last season. The Tigers defeated the Gators 27-17 as a 2-point home underdog. Florida is a big 17.5-point favorite this time.

                Clemson (13) at Georgia Tech

The Tigers improved to 4-0 last week after blasting N.C. State 42-20 as a 7-point favorite. Cullen Harper completed 25-of-39 passes for 268 yards with two touchdowns, but it was running backs James Davis and C.J. Spiller who truly shined. Davis rushed for 166 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries and also caught a TD pass, while Spiller had 114 rushing yards on 21 carries and also had a touchdown run and a touchdown reception.

The Yellow Jackets are riding a two-game losing streak after falling to Virginia 28-23 as a 3.5-point favorite last week. Quarterback Taylor Bennett completed only 17-of-40 passes for 230 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while running back Jonathan Dwyer had 75 rushing yards on 15 carries.

The Tigers blew out the Yellow Jackets 31-7 as a 6.5-point favorite when they met up last season. Clemson is a slim 3-point road favorite in Saturday’s game.

                      Week 14 CFL games

                      Saturday, September 29

Montreal (6-6) @ Saskatchewan (7-5) -- Alouettes lost three of last four games, with losses by 32,19,6 points. Roughriders beat Als 16-7 in season opener (+3.5), using three picks (+3 turnover ratio) to win, but they've lost last three games, allowing 38.3 pg. Riders are 4-2 at home, with wins by 41,40,7,5 points. Four of last five Saskatchewan games went over the total.

Hamilton (2-10) @ Winnipeg (7-4-1) -- TiCats snapped a 5-game skid last week; their only other win was Week 6 vs Winnipeg, 43-22 (+6), a week after Bombers had beaten them 38-16 on this field (-9.5). Hamilton is 0-6 on road, with losses by 28,4,18,2,18 and 13 points (2-4 as road dog). Bombers are 4-1 at home, 3-2 as home favorite, with wins by 9,18,2 and 19 points.

Calgary (5-6-1) @ BC Lions (8-3-1) -- Lions snuck out 37-34 win at Taylor Field last week, their third win in four games since the bye. BC won 32-27 at Calgary (+2.5) in Week 5, then tied 45-45 at McMahon three weeks later (+2.5). Stampeders are 2-4 away from home, 1-3 as road dog, with losses by 41,33,12 and 4 pts. Lions are 4-2 at home, 3-3 as home favorite, with wins by 20,4, 32 and 33 points.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Montreal Alouettes at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-6 ½, 52 ½)
                        Saturday, Sept. 29, 3 p.m. ET

The Marcus Brady era is over as Anthony Calvillo hopes to return to the quarterback slot for the Alouettes. Montreal needs Calvillo to immediately recapture his form of five years ago, but top target Ben Cahoon is just returning to the field himself and Kerry Watkins is out. If Calvillo can't go, Jason Maas gets the call.

There was a minor brouhaha in Montreal this week after head coach Jim Popp publicly lambasted his offensive coordinator's play-calling, but Popp gets no sympathy from the Riders. Saskatchewan is in a three-game losing streak and has had its own share of dirty laundry aired during the skid.

The Riders, owners of the league's top defense for most of the summer, have allowed 34.6 points per game over their last five overall but just put out their best effort in weeks against the Lions. Kerry Joseph also spread the ball well against a good BC defense.

The Als have conceded 47 and 46 points in each of their last two road games and their pass blocking is back to its old tricks, making an unspectacular Edmonton pass rush look nearly unstoppable last week.

                        Pick: Roughriders -6 ½

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-10 ½, 50 ½)
                        Saturday, Sept. 29, 7 p.m. ET

Winnipeg welcomes back receiver Milt Stegall and cornerback Juran Bolden this weekend after its Week 13 loss in Toronto, but still has questions, the chief of which is "Who'll be the placekicker?" Troy Westwood's continued struggles dug a deeper hole for the Bombers last week and a kicker with a 56 percent success rate on field goal attempts isn't encouraging for bettors laying double-digit points on the home team this week.

Of course, taking the points with the visitors might not look too encouraging either with the potential absence of Printers and his strained hamstring. But Richie Williams has looked comfortable at the reins of the Tabbies' offense if he's, in fact, called upon to start at quarterback on Saturday.

The key to this game, however, is the Hamilton defense. When stirred, the Ticats defenders can go sideline-to-sideline with the best of them. If Winnipeg grabs a lead as expected, Charles Roberts will get a ton of carries and the Hamilton defense can keep the game reasonably close.

The Bombers smoked the Ticats 34-4 at Ivor Wynne two weeks ago, but that final result was injury- and turnover-fuelled. Hamilton, despite being winless on the road, should put forth a much better effort on Saturday.

                        Pick: Tiger Cats +10 ½

Calgary Stampeders at BC Lions (-11, 54 ½)
                        Saturday, Sept. 29, 10 p.m. ET

The 2007 season changed on one harmless-looking play last week when Hamilton's Zeke Moreno landed on top of Henry Burris as the quarterback fell out of bounds. One separated shoulder later, Calgary's leaning on Akili Smith to resurrect the Stampeders' momentum.

The team's beat writers have written about how comfortable Smith looked running the offense in practice this week, but they can't deny how godawful he's looked in his limited game action this year. Yes, he's a former No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft, but he's also been hawking real estate in the U.S. more recently than tossing touchdowns down there.

Smith has tossed five intercetions in just 26 passes this year, a horrible ratio with the league's top turnover team on tap. BC leads the CFL with 18 interceptions and has picked off opposing QBs at will to win its last two home games by lopsided margins.

Jarious Jackson makes his fifth straight start at quarterback for the Lions and while his passing numbers won't recall Dave Dickenson at his prime, Jackson's rally in Regina last week displayed his increased comfort at the helm of the Lions offense.

                        Pick: Lions -11

                        Last week: 1-3

                        Year to date: 20-28

                          Dunkel Index

                          Denver at Indianapolis
The Colts know how to get out of the gate quickly as their 3-0 start has pushed their record to 17-2 in September under Tony Dungy. The wins haven't been easy, though, as the last two have come on the road against a pair of improving teams: Tennessee (22-20) and Houston (30-24). Home will look pretty good to the Colts where they are 10-0 in the regular season since the start of last season and have won 21 of 22 overall. What may look even better is a Denver team that fell flat at home last week in a loss to Jacksonville (23-14). The Broncos allowed the Jaguars to run through their defense (186 rushing yards), which should help Joseph Addai get going. Meanwhile the Bronco offense managed just 265 total yards against the Jag defense with Travis Henry being held to 35 yards on 11 carries. Those numbers should look good to a Colt defense that has carried over the momentum from last year's postseason and held the Texans to 40 rushing yards, the lowest total against an Indy defense since 2005. The Colts have dominated the Broncos the last two times Denver has come to town, outscoring them 90-34 in back-to-back playoff games. This game looks like it could be more of the same and makes the Colts a good pick to cover (-9 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Indianapolis favored by 18. Dunkel Pick: Indianapolis (-9 1/2). Here are all of this week's picks.
