Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (+111, 10 ½)

The Angels clinched the AL West title on Sunday, but have since stumbled and lost two in a row to Texas. Today they look to avoid suffering their first sweep against the Rangers in six years.

The return of two veteran hitters should help their cause.

Vladimir Guerrero and Garret Anderson will be in the lineup for this afternoon’s series finale after sitting out the past two games. Guerrero, who is batting .323 this season, will feature as the designated hitter, while Anderson (.303 this season) will return to the outfield.

The pair, along with the rest of the Angels’ lineup, will face Texas rookie Luis Mendoza (1-0, 1.93) today. The 23-year-old righty got his first major league win against Baltimore on Friday, but another strong outing against the hot-hitting Angels is a major ask.

          Pick: Angels -119

Arizona Diamondbacks at Pittsburgh Pirates (+112, 9 ½)

The Diamondbacks look to avoid a third straight loss today when they face the Pirates tonight. Arizona still has a two-game lead in the NL West, but both San Diego and Colorado are closing rapidly.

Despite the D-Backs' recent road struggles (they’ve lost four of the last six away from home) their offense has stayed hot. That could be the key today. Arizona batters have posted a .329 batting average while driving in 30 runs in their last five games.

Tonight they'll face struggling Pirates starter Matt Morris (9-11, 5.02), who is 2-4 with a 6.71 ERA in 10 starts since he arrived from San Francisco at the trade deadline in July. He is 0-2 with a 2.86 ERA in three starts against the Diamondbacks this season.

          Pick: Diamondbacks -125

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers (-130, 8 ½)

The Rockies have won a season-high nine straight games to become serious playoff contenders. They are a game back from the San Diego Padres in the NL wild-card race and are looking for their sixth consecutive victory over the L.A. Dodgers today.

The last time Colorado won nine in a row was September 1997, and the franchise has never won 10 straight.

The Rockies' late surge ruined the Dodgers’ chances of making the playoffs this season. Colorado swept them over four games in Los Angeles just last week, and Tuesday’s 9-7 win officially knocked L.A. out of the postseason.

Today the Dodgers send Derek Lowe (12-13, 3.93) to mound hoping he can solve the red-hot Rox. Lowe gave up six runs in three innings of a 9-4 road loss against them on Thursday, and will not be looking forward to another outing against them today.

          Pick: Rockies +122

            Streaking Pitchers

            Wednesday, September 26

            HOT

Jon Lester (Boston Red Sox) – The 23-year-old left-hander is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four September starts. Lester is coming off a solid outing, going 6 1/3 innings, striking out five and surrendering just three hits. Boston (-162) is 8-2 when Lester is on the mound and looks to continue that trend this evening when they take on Oakland (+154) at Fenway Park. The total for the game is set at 10 ½.

Fausto Carmona (Cleveland Indians) – Carmona has been lights-out in his last three starts. He is 3-0 in that span, posting a ridiculously low 0.86 ERA. The righty hasn’t given up a homer since August 21 and has struck out 29 batters in his six appearances since then. Carmona faces the Mariners in the first game of a double-header tonight as a -177 favorite. Seattle is a big dog at +169 with the total set at 10.

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) – Peavy has been making a strong case for the NL Cy Young Award. He has 23 strikeouts in his last three games with a 1.69 ERA. The ace took a no-hitter into the fifth in his last start and left the game after seven innings with eight K’s, three hits and one earned run. Peavy has gone at least seven innings in three consecutive games and has won nine of his last 12 starts. The Padres (-191) are huge favorites tonight against San Francisco (+180) with the total set at 7 ½.

            COLD

J.P. Howell (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) – The D-Rays have dropped each of Howell’s eight starts since early June. He is coming off a decent outing last week against the Angels, but conceded 21 hits in his last three games, surrendering 13 earned runs in only 11 2/3 innings. Tampa Bay (+224) has split the season series with the Yanks (-242) this year at 8-8, but are still huge dogs at home tonight.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) – Santana is rounding out his worst season as a full-time starter in the league. He is 1-4 in his last five starts with a 5.03 ERA. He has given up dingers all season long (an AL league-leading 33 times) and made no exception last game, conceding three home runs. The Twins (-138) are favored tonight on the road against Detroit (+130), but watch out for line action, as Detroit is raking in 62.37 percent of the consensus picks.

Matt Morris (Pittsburgh Pirates) – Morris was chased in each of his last two starts, lasting only four innings and giving up 13 earned runs. He has just two wins in 10 starts since being traded to the Pirates at the deadline. Morris looks to avoid his third straight loss when Pittsburgh (+112) plays at home tonight against Arizona (-120). The total for the game is set at 9 ½.
