                  Tips and Trends
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Florida Marlins (7:05 PM ET)

The Cubs have lost the last eight meetings with the Marlins and are now just two games ahead of Milwaukee in the NL Central after Tuesday's 4-2 loss. Florida has outscored them 27-9 in four meetings this year. EDGE: MARLINS
Chicago starter Jason Marquis is just 4-4 lifetime vs. Florida with an inflated 6.85 ERA. Florida slugger Miguel Cabrera is batting .455 with four homers, 11 RBIs and 11 runs in his last 10 games against the Cubs and hitting .417 lifetime vs. Marquis. EDGE: MARLINS
Florida's Daniel Barone has never faced the Cubs and is 0-3 with an 8.31 ERA in five starts this season overall. EDGE: CUBS

Arizona Diamondbacks at Pittsburgh Pirates (7:05 PM ET)

The Diamondbacks now lead the Padres by just 1.5 games in the NL West after a disappointing 6-5 loss to Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The Pirates blew a 5-1 lead but scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning. Look for Arizona to be extra motivated in this game, knowing San Diego just picked up a full game in the standings. EDGE: D-BACKS
Arizona's Livan Hernandez has been hit hard in his last four outings, allowing 16 runs and 31 hits in 23 innings. He is only 3-3 lifetime vs. Pittsburgh with a 5.10 ERA. EDGE: PIRATES
Pittsburgh's Matt Morris has not pitched at home since earning the victory in a 10-5 win over the Cubs back on September 9th. Since then, he has surrendered 13 runs and 17 hits in just 7 1/3 combined innings in road starts at San Diego and Houston. EDGE: D-BACKS

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies (ESPN | 7:05 PM ET)

The Phillies failed to take advantage of another loss by the Mets on Tuesday as they fell to the Braves, 10-6. They remain two games behind New York for the lead in NL East and also trail San Diego in the Wild Card race. Atlanta has won three of the last four meetings with Philly after dropping five of six and is a very dangerous spoiler team the last week of the season. EDGE: BRAVES
Atlanta's Tim Hudson has enjoyed success away from home this season, going 8-3 with a 3.09 ERA in 16 starts. Hudson has been just mediocre against the Phillies though with a 4-4 mark and 4.09 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES
Phillies starter Kyle Lohse has performed well at home this season with a 5-3 record and 3.05 ERA. However, Lohse has struggled mightily against the Braves during his career with a 6.32 ERA in three starts. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES & OVER
The Braves are 8-1 in their last 9 games as favorites.

Baseball – MLB Divisional Title notes

                    MLB

                    Wednesday, September 26

Tale of the tape: MLB divisional title fights

This weekend, middleweight champ Jermain Taylor faces a fierce No. 1 contender and boxing bettors looking to score an edge for this tight matchup will go to the tale of the tape.

But Saturday’s bout isn’t the only battle raging in the world of sports. Major League Baseball has plenty of big swinging action as well. The AL West and Central divisions are decided, but other postseason races are closer than they’ve ever been. Figuring out which teams will come out on top is about as tough as judging two evenly matched boxers.

Like fight fans, we go to the tale of the tape to see which clubs will be left standing when the final bell rings on the 2007 regular season.

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees for the AL East title

The Red Sox are at home in Fenway Park for their final six games of the season, a homestand which should help the offense find its familiar stroke. Boston is hitting .295 at home this season compared to .262 on the road.

The Red Sox start with the Oakland Athletics, who opened a three-game series with the Red Sox on Tuesday. Oakland's taken four of six meeting with the AL East leaders this year and have held the Sox to just .229 batting. Following Oakland, Boston hosts the Minnesota Twins. The BoSox took two out of three games versus the Twins this season and hit .248 against them in the process.

The Yankees were only two games out of the AL East lead as of Tuesday, when they opened a road series against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. New York is 8-7 versus Tampa Bay this season and split the last six games played in Florida.

After the D-Rays, the Bronx Bombers travel to Maryland to face the Baltimore Orioles in the last regular season series of the year. New York hasn’t hit exceptionally well against the O’s this year, batting just .257 on their way to going 7-8 against Baltimore this season. The Yankees staff has an ERA over 5.00 when facing Baltimore, a team batting .296 against New York this season.

New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies for the NL East title

The Mets were only two games up on the Phillies heading into Tuesday's action after losing six of their previous 10 contests. Getting three wins against the Florida Marlins helped them keep their divisional rival at bay this weekend but New York’s woes against the Washington Nationals could be its undoing.

The Mets’ loss to the Nationals on Monday was their third defeat in the last four games against Washington and the seventh out of 16 meetings this season. New York has a team 4.44 ERA when facing the Nats and is hitting .292 against D.C.’s arms. Following this series, the Mets face the Fish again. New York is 10-5 against the Marlins this year and is averaging almost seven runs per meeting behind a .306 batting average.

The Phillies play one of the hottest teams in the majors this week in the Atlanta Braves, who are only three games out of the NL wild card. Philadelphia has split the previous six meetings with Atlanta heading into Tuesday but is 7-8 versus the Braves on the season.

Philly is having trouble hitting the ball this month but has been able to squeak out wins in tight spots. Following the Braves, the Phillies host the Nationals. The Phillies are 10-5 against Washington this season and have held them to an average of under four runs during those contests. They are hitting .283 at home this year, but just .245 against Washington.

Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central title

Any other team in the bigs would dread finishing the year on the road when they’re in such a tight race – but not the Cubbies. They are 39-36 away from Wrigley Field this season thanks to the Chicago pitching staff’s composure in enemy territory. Cubs pitchers have an MLB-best 3.85 collective road ERA.

Chicago face a team that's had its number this season. It was swept by the Marlins in May, getting outscored 23-7 in three games. However the Cubs are now one of the NL's hottest teams after winning eight of their last 10 contests. Florida has lost three straight and seven of its last 10 games.

Chicago wraps up the regular season with three games against the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs are 7-8 versus the Reds this season including two wins in last weekend’s series in the Windy City.

Milwaukee has been shaky over its last six, winning only two games. It is now hosting the St. Louis Cardinals and took Game 1 of this series with a 13-5 stomping on Monday, the first time the Brewers had beaten the Cardinals in the last seven games.

The Brewers have the benefit of playing at Miller Park for the final lap of the season, where they are 48-27. The Brew Crew hit more than 20 points higher at home and have a home ERA almost a run lower than their road number. They finish up against the Padres who are also neck deep in the postseason mix.

San Diego is three games behind in the NL West. Milwaukee is hitting just .206 against the Padres after running into Jake Peavy, Greg Maddux and Justin Germano during a three-game sweep by San Diego in California.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres for the NL West title

The Diamondbacks spend the rest of the season on the road with their first stop in Steel Town. Arizona's won four of six games against the Pittsburgh Pirates this year despite a 5.43 team ERA against the Bucs and getting outscored 36-37 over those six meetings. The D-Backs have one of the best road ERAs in the NL but can’t get it done at the visitor’s plate, posting a league-worst .239 batting average away from home.

After Pittsburgh, Arizona travels west to face the Colorado Rockies, who could be close in the NL West standings by then. Colorado is 8-7 versus the Diamondbacks after taking two of the last three meetings. Arizona is hitting .253 against the Rockies staff and has held off the Rox with a 3.91 ERA over their 15 meetings this season.

San Diego is fighting for both the division title or the wild-card spot. The Padres are three games behind the Diamondbacks and tied with the Phillies for the last postseason ticket in the NL after Monday’s loss to the San Francisco Giants. They were continuing their series with the Giants this Tuesday, who they’d beaten in eight straight meetings before losing to them Monday. San Diego has a 2.59 ERA against San Francisco thanks in part to Peavy who is 2-0 versus the Giants with a 0.68 ERA against the team.

The Padres face the playoff-hungry Brewers on Thursday for the final series of the regular season. San Diego’s staff dominated Milwaukee during a three-game set in May. It was also able to get to Milwaukee’s pitchers, batting .305 during those games for 17 total runs.

                        Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Brian Giles hit a dramatic homer with two on, two out in last inning, to give Padres 6-4 win at San Francisco, which keeps San Diego game ahead of Phils, Rockies in Wild Card.

-- Down in LA, Ryan Spilborghs made sliding catch to keep Rockies ahead by run in bottom of 8th, then hit RBI double in ninth to lead Colorado to ninth straight win, 9-7.

-- How are the Phillies still in contention, as hideous as the pitching has been? They lost 10-6 Tuesday. Awful.

-- Beermakers won, Cubs lost, Chicago's lead in NL Central is now down to two games over Milwaukee.

-- Manny Ramirez returned to Boston lineup Tuesday, after missing 24 games. Rocco Baldelli is still missing, after not playing in last 134 days of season, after tweaking hammy.

-- Why on God's green earth does billionaire Ross Perot own the freakin' Magna Carta?

Wednesday's List of 13: Our first NFL List of 13............

If you don’t have at least a .500 record, you can’t get ranked here. As always, this list will change from week-to-week; if you disagree with my list, go make your own………..

                          13) Redskins-- Improved QB Campbell plays better now than he did at Auburn. .

                          12) Buccaneers-- Won pair of home games easily, if they win at Carolina this week, they'll control NFC South.

                          11) Panthers-- Would a switch from Delhomme to Carr hurt?

                          10) Ravens-- Still don’t have a quality QB who can stay healthy.

                          9) Seahawks-- One fumbled handoff away from a 3-0 start.

                          8) Jaguars-- Most obscure team in NFL; win at Denver was impressive.

                          7) Titans-- Lost 22-20 to Colts, drilled Jacksonville, won by 17 in New Orleans. If they played in bigger city, they'd be a lot more well-known.

                          6) Texans-- Need Johnson, Green to stay healthy, but I like them. Schaub is lessening effect of passing up Vince Young.

                          5) Packers-- Beat Eagles, Chargers, won at Giants. Ol‘ #4 can still play. Defense is stingy.

                          4) Cowboys-- Scored 86 points in three second halves; didn‘t hit hardly at all this summer, could this be start of a trend?

                          3) Steelers-- Won their first three games by 27-23-21 points.

                          2) Patriots-- Won their first three games by 24-24-31 points.

                          1) Colts- Defending champ; are kings of hill until they lose.

-Brian Giles, Padres, hit a go-ahead three-run homer with two outs in the ninth, and San Diego ended a four-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over San Francisco.

-Frank Thomas, Blue Jays, had four hits, including his 513th home run, to lead Toronto past Baltimore 11-4.

-Jorge Velandia, Devil Rays, hit a grand slam for his first career homer and Tampa Bay prevented the Yankees from clinching a playoff berth with a 7-6, 10-inning victory.

-Mark Teixeira and Chipper Jones, Braves. Teixeira hit a three-run homer and Jones added a two-run shot, helping Atlanta keep its slim playoff hopes alive with a 10-6 win over Philadelphia.

                            FAST 50

Prince Fielder became the youngest major league player ever to hit 50 home runs in a season, connecting twice in Milwaukee's 9-1 rout of St. Louis on Tuesday night. Fielder and his father, Cecil, became the only father-son tandem with 50-homer seasons. The elder Fielder hit 51 with the Detroit Tigers in 1990. It was the eighth multihomer game of the younger Fielder's career, and the fifth this season.

                            ONE MORE DAY

Detroit remained in the playoff race when it beat Minnesota 8-0 and the Yankees lost 7-6 in 10 innings to Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. To stay in contention, the defending AL champion Tigers need to win the rest of their games this week and have the Yankees lose all of theirs to force a one-game playoff for the AL wild card.

                            ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH

Colorado tied its franchise record for the longest winning streak and eliminated the Dodgers from postseason contention with a 9-7 win over Los Angeles on Tuesday night. The Rockies, who are a season-high 13 games over .500 (85-72), won their ninth straight, matching the mark set from Aug. 26-Sept. 5, 1997.

                            WHIFFED BY WILLIS

Dontrelle Willis struck out seven to set a Marlins record for career strikeouts in Florida's 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. Willis (10-15) increased his career total to 755, breaking A.J. Burnett's club record of 753. He allowed two hits and two runs over eight innings, winning for only the third time in 15 decisions since May 29.

                            SLUMP'S OVER

Alex Rodriguez ended his longest homerless drought in more than a year, hitting his major league-leading 53rd in the Yankees' 7-6, 10-inning loss at Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. A-Rod, who had gone 55 at bats since last homering on Sept. 9 a Kansas City, circled the bases to a standing ovation after connecting on an 0-1 pitch off Jason Hammel for a grand slam. The stretch was A-Rod's longest since he also went 55 at bats without a homer from May 27-June 15, 2006.

                            SPEAKING

"It's not easy, but we're going to get the job done before too long. We're going to get back to the postseason, and we're going to be going on all cylinders.'' - Johnny Damon, who was 5-for-5 and scored two runs in the Yankees' 7-6 loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. New York is 8-8 this year against the Devil Rays, who have baseball's worst record.

                              Minnesota at Detroit
Detroit's second-half mastery over the Twins continued last night as the Tigers' 8-0 win ran their record to 8-1 in their last nine contests against Minnesota. Jim Leyland's club will go for another win today behind rookie pitcher Jair Jurrjens, who is making a claim for a spot in next season's rotation with a 3-1 record and 3.90 ERA since being called up. He'll face reigning Cy Young winner Johan Santana, who has pitched well against the Tigers in his career (11-5, 2.95), but is just 1-3 this season. That decline has mirrored Santana's struggles down the stretch as he is 1-4 with a 5.03 ERA in his last five starts and has now given up a AL-leading 33 HRs this season. The Tigers look like a good home underdog pick (+134) according to Dunkel, which has Detroit favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Detroit (+134). Here are all of today's games.
