It's funny because only 8 players who were on the 2004 team played on the 2007 team. I think they were very different and this team (IMO), was much, much, better.
This team is younger, faster and they hit and pitch better than the 04' group. They also won the division for the 1st time in 12 years and had the best record in baseball for the 1st time since 1946. The 04' team can't say that.
If you look at the rosters position by position, this 07' team kicks the 04' teams ass (IMO)!

I agree that this team was better overall, but do you really think this team was a better hitting team than '04? Both teams were patient, ran pitch counts and got on base, but the '04 team had a bit more pop, imo. Manny and Ortiz had monster years, far superior to this year, Damon/Millar and Lowell/Youkilis were a wash Varitek was a better hitter in '04, Pedroia over Bellhorn, Drew and the RF Platoon a wash, Cabrera over Lugo....Interesting comparison.
Then again, I don't know if you ar elooking at just the post season as I am looking at the whole body of work, not just the postseason. The bottom of the order for the majority of this year was the only weak point on this team, imo.

And, if you had the future in mind, this team is head and shoulders above '04 with so much more of a future. This team is going to compete for years.

I do think this team that played in the WS was better. Remember, Jacoby wasn't there most of the year but he was in the WS and will be in CF next year. You don't compare Damon/Millar to Lowell and Youk. You would have to compare the same positions which would be Bill Meuller/Kevin Millar vs Mike Lowell/Kevin Youkilis. Not even close in my opinion. I'll take both guys from the 07' team. In CF it would be Ellsbury or Damon. I was a huge Damon fan but he was getting up there in age and couldn't throw a ball for the life of him. No doubt i would take Ellsbury over Damon for now and the next 10 years. In RF you had Trot Nixon vs JD Drew. Nixon NEVER played against lefties cuz he couldn't hit them and he was often injured and getting old. As tough of a regular season as Drew had, look at his Post Season Success. That tells me alot and i have no problem right now choosing Drew over Nixon. Yes, Manny & Papi put up better numbers that year but Papi was hurt most of this year and after knee surgery he should be back to his old self. After seeing Manny with the best eye in baseball in this post season, i feel great about him as well. Obviously 2nd base is a clear 07' winner with Pedroia over Bellhorn. Not even close. You look at Closer. Who would you take between Keith Foulke and Jonathan Papelbon? Again ... NOT EVEN CLOSE. This year also gave us an All Star setup up guy who was just unbelieveable and left handed. Did the 04' team have a setup guy this good? No way again. Starters? Switch out Lowe and Pedro for Beckett and Dice-K? Give me 07 in a heartbeat!
The 1 position i think the 04' team was better in is SS with Cabrera over Lugo ... and THAT'S IT!

Sorry, I misinterpreted your oroginal post...I wasn't debating who is the better team and whose future is more bright as that, an I agree, is a no brainer. I only disagreed about who was the better offensive team. If you were to just compare teams, the 2004 team versus 2007 from April - Oct and forget about past, future, and injuries just team versus team, I would take the 2004 as an offensive lineup...not for their defense, not for their pitching and certainly not for their future. You have to be an idiot to suggest that Ellsbury doesn't have more of an upside than Damon did in '04...but, as you know, Damon produced huge numbers in '04 and the centerfield position did not produce that this year.
The way I look at it, hitting only and just and what they did for that one year:
'04 Manny versus '07 Manny..............'04 Manny
Damon versus Crisp/Ellsbury..............Damon
Nixon/Millar/Kapler versus Drew.........'04 team
Mueller/Youk versus Lowell...............Lowell
Cabrera/Nomah/Reese versus Lugo....'04 team
Bellhorn versus Pedroia....................Pedroia
Mietkewicz/Millar versus Youk...........Youk
'04 Papi versus '07 Papi....................'04 Papi
'04 Varitek versus '07 Varitek............'04 varitek
'04 Bench versus '07 Bench..............'04 Bench
They had some good hitters off the bench in '04. This years bench was pretty bleak (Cash, Mirabelli, Hinske, Wily Mo, Kielty) but had a couple of huge/timely hits.
