Lady luck: Tuesday’s best WNBA bets

Washington Mystics at Indiana Fever (-3 ½, 145)

We can definitively say who the league’s most valuable player is this season. Some may prefer the sexy numbers Lauren Jackson is putting up (league-leading 24.2 points per game) but the Fever are a completely different team without Tamika Catchings.

Catchings leads the Fever in points (16.6), rebounds (9.0), assists (4.7) and steals (3.1). Indiana was the class of the WNBA until Catchings partially tore her plantar fascia in her left foot. Since she went down the Fever have lost five straight and gone 1-4 against the spread.

“We don’t have (Tamika) but we’ve got enough players in here to fill the void,” Indiana’s Tully Bevilaqua said after falling 89-75 to the Seattle Storm on Friday. “There’s no excuse for why we can’t be winning these games without her.”

        We disagree.

        Pick: Mystics +3 ½

Detroit Shock at San Antonio Silver Stars (-1, 147)

If you were expecting the Silver Stars to drop off some after jumping out to a surprising 3-1 start, think again. San Antonio has proved several times this season it is a legitimate championship contender, making tonight’s matchup against the Shock a possible Finals preview.

Offseason acquisition Becky Hammon – another MVP candidate to some – has instilled a winning attitude for a franchise that hasn’t won anything. The Silver Stars beat the Shock at the start of the month (in Detroit no less) and there’s no reason to think they won’t be able to win the rematch on their home floor.

        Pick: Silver Stars -1
