    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Baseball trading deadline is 4pm Tuesday; Teixeira went to the Braves Monday, Mets filled their 2B hole with Luis Castillo, will Phils do something to strenghten their team?

-- Phillies are red-hot, winning nine of last ten games, so is it a good idea to change a winning formula right now?

-- Celtics' trade for Kevin Garnett gives them nucelus that is good enough to win East: Garnett-Pierce-Allen.

-- Lakers signed Coby Karl Monday; both George Karl and Phil Jackson once coached the Albany Patroons in CBA, so those of us here got to witness coaching greatness.

-- Terrific pitching duel in Seattle Monday, when Batista got best of Escobar, 2-0, trimming Angels' lead in AL West.

-- Carl Crawford has injured wrist and didn't start Monday; he came in as pinch-runner and had to bat in extra frames, where he took pitches, trying to draw a walk. Count got to 3-1, he fouled pitch off, then homered to win game. Will he learn that taking pictures makes him a better hitter?

Tuesday's List of 13: Notes from the recruiting trail..........

      13) Lot less coaches here Monday, as recruiting is winding down for month, and teams are beginning to focus on kids they've already discovered, rather than identify new ones. It might look like a ghost town here Tuesday.......

      12) Great set of late games Monday night at Milk House, with Alabama Challenge beating Martin Brothers (Iowa), and the West Virginia Select team nipping Philly Renegades in two of the better games. Renegades has especially tough day, with close losses to both Martin Bros and West Virginia.

      11) Where else can you see kids from New Hampshire play a group of kids from New Mexico? Both teams are solid, with New Mexico Lobos beating kids from Granite State. All the Ivy League clubs are looking at jump shooting big guy from New Hampshire named Saunders.

      10) You hear lot of interesting things sitting on baseline here at the Milk House, where the coaches sit. Learned ton about defense listening to one coach Sunday, then heard couple of coaches discussing scheduling a home-and-home series on Monday afternoon. A lot of business gets done here.

      9) The referees working this part of tournament are paying to be here and have their work evaluated by pair of NBA refs, neither of whom is Tim Donaghy. Officials take great pride in their work, so coming here and learning is part of the process of moving up the officiating ladder.

      8) Just about all coaches where gear with their school's name on it; I think the ones with really big letters are more effective, especially for smaller schools. Mercer University has the best of those shirts, t-shirts with huge block letters. Nobody that sees that shirt is going to forget that Mercer was around.

      7) Once teams get into the loser's bracket part of the tourney, they get sent to gyms all over Kissimmee, and it becomes an at art to try and get to see every team you want to. I know bit more about driving in this town that I do about driving in my hometown, where I only go certain places.

      6) We trekked down to Kissimmee Civic Center to see recruit, only the kid didn't play in the game his team won by 17 or so. Not good. Had to ask if the kid was sick or hurt or suspended was told he was hurt, only he went through warmups like he was 100%., so we'll see if he plays in tomorrow's game.

      5) There are so many teams here, it is impossible to see all the teams and all the kids; sometimes, you are watching one kid or one team, and you stumble on to another player you really like, and that is part of the fun of recruiting.

      4) Saw odd thing today, as team was wrapping up a 10-point win in their game; player and coach had a disagreement about how to run a play, and neither would back down, so the two argued on sideline as game wound down, to point where the kid's father came out of stands to try and calm things down. Usually losing teams act like that, not teams that are winning.

      3) The tendency is to think that things will slow down here at Disney once the tournament ends Wednesday, but the 14's come in for their nationals later in week. I get distinct feeling that things are never very slow around Disney World.

      2) Last year I think I saw it rain once here in my 12 days; this year, it has rained more days than not. It also hasn't been as hot this year, and that isn't a complaint.

      1) Tuesday is our last day of basketball here, then at night, it is off to Tropicana Field, for Jays-Rays game, before flying home Wednesday morning. It has been an excellent trip, but when we get home, it'll be time to dive into football, so make sure you log on for Fantasy Football writeups in August.

              Injuries
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              MLB Infirmary Report

Starting pitchers around the major leagues have been leaving their starts with nagging injuries recently. Here's the latest news in this edition of the MLB Infirmary Report . . .

Arizona - Randy Johnson P 15-Day Disabled List
So much for The Big Unit's chances of returning to the Diamondbacks' rotation this season. The lefthander will have back surgery this week and miss the rest of the year.

Baltimore - Chris Ray P 15-Day Disabled List
Ray's sprained elbow will keep him out of Baltimore's bullpen until at least early September. The O's will now end up with a closer-by-committee for the next five weeks.

Boston - Curt Schilling P 15-Day Disabled List
The latest target date for Schilling to return to the mound for the Red Sox is August 5 versus the Mariners. The righthander is still making rehab appearances in the minors.

Chi Cubs - Carlos Zambrano P Day-to-Day (calf cramps)
The Cubs' ace suffered some calf cramps in his outing on the weekend. However, Zambrano did manage to throw eight innings, and he's expected to make his next start.

Cincinnati - Aaron Harang P Day-to-Day (sore back)
Harang lasted just a single inning in his start on the weekend, leaving the game with a sore lower back. The Reds have now announced he will miss his next scheduled outing.

Detroit - Kenny Rogers P 15-Day Disabled List
The Tigers will be without Rogers' services for at least the next couple of weeks. The lefthander was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday night with a sore left elbow.

LA Dodgers - Derek Lowe P Day-to-Day (hip injury)
Lowe left his start last Wednesday with a hip injury. The righthander, though, wasn't placed on the disabled list, and it's possible he could return to the mound this weekend.

LA Dodgers - Brad Penny P Day-to-Day (strained abdomen)
Penny left his start last Thursday with an abdominal injury. The righthander felt ok during a bullpen session on the weekend and is scheduled to make a start on Tuesday.

NY Mets - Carlos Beltran OF Day-to-Day (strained oblique)
Beltran has been out of the Mets' lineup with a strained oblique. The star outfielder will try to play against the Brewers on Tuesday night before a decision on the DL is made.

NY Mets - Paul Lo Duca C Day-to-Day (sore hamstring)
Lo Duca was forced out of Saturday's game with a leg injury, and he sat out on Sunday. However, the catcher is expected to be back behind the plate for the Mets on Tuesday.

NY Yankees - Derek Jeter SS Day-to-Day (sore shoulder)
Jeter left Sunday's contest against the Orioles early after suffering a shoulder injury. The Yankees, though, were up big at the time, and the SS is expected to play Tuesday.

Philadelphia - Chase Utley 2B 15-Day Disabled List
The Phillies suffered a big blow when star 2B Utley suffered a broken right hand last week. Utley will miss a month with the injury, and the team picked up Tadahito Iguchi.

Pittsburgh - Tom Gorzelanny P Day-to-Day (sore shoulder)
Gorzelanny experienced stiffness in his shoulder during his start last Wednesday, and had to leave the game early. The lefthander might be able to pitch again this weekend.

San Diego - Chris Young P 15-Day Disabled List
Young was ruled out of his weekend start on Friday, and he was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday. The righthander is only expected to miss a couple of outings.

Mark Teixeira could be Atlanta's new cleanup hitter as early as Tuesday night. The Braves reached an agreement on Monday to send rookie catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and three minor leaguers to Texas for the powerful, switch-hitting Teixeira. The official announcement of the deal is expected to come on Tuesday. ... The New York Mets acquired three-time All-Star Luis Castillo from Minnesota for a pair of prospects. ... Philadelphia acquired right-hander Kyle Lohse from Cincinnati for minor league lefty Matt Maloney.

                HEROICS

Carl Crawford, who scored the tying run as a pinch runner in the ninth inning, led off the bottom of the 11th with a homer to give Tampa Bay a 5-4 victory over Toronto on Monday. Crawford, who was out of the starting lineup for three games with a sprained right wrist, hit a 3-2 pitch from Brian Wolfe (2-1) over the wall in center field for Tampa Bay, which had lost eight of nine.

                OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS

Detroit beat Oakland 5-2 on Monday in a matchup of teams headed in opposite directions. Both teams figured to challenge for division titles and on June 15 they were within a game of each other. The A's were at their season high of 37-29, while the Tigers were a game better at 38-28. Detroit has won 23 of 39 games since then, while the A's have lost 28 of 40.

                STRAIGHT A'S

Curtis Granderson and Placido Polanco both had three hits and an RBI as Detroit beat Oakland 5-2 on Monday. Granderson's .353 career average (18-for-51) against the A's is his best against any team except St. Louis, while Polanco's .500 mark (36-for-72) is his best against any team.

                SNAPPED

Ted Lilly had won six straight decisions before allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings and taking the loss in the Chicago Cubs' 4-1 defeat at the hands of Philadelphia on Monday. ... Minnesota topped Kansas City 3-1 to end the Royals' four-game winning streak. ... Detroit snapped a four-game slide with a 5-2 win over Oakland.

                SPEAKING

''You ask yourself, 'When is it going to end?' We just have to keep our fingers crossed and pray that neither of them are out for an extended period of time. That puts a serious dent in what we're trying to accomplish when you lose two guys like that.'' - Philadelphia's Aaron Rowand, on Shane Victorino and Michael Bourn departing a 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday with injuries. Philadelphia already has All-Star Chase Utley and five others on the disabled list.

                    WINNING POINTS
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    *SERIES BEGINNING MONDAY JULY 30*

                    Philadelphia at Chicago Cubs (4) 30th, 31st, 1st, 2nd

Both these teams have turned a tidy profit against righthanders (Phillies +$565, Chicago +$290) but they’ve been dreadful vs. lefthanders so far (Cubs -$1030, Phillies -$610). Both pitching staffs have a mix of righties and lefties, so we’ll wait for the right situation. PREFERRED: Lefthanders vs. righthanders.

                    Toronto at Tampa Bay (3) 30th, 31st, 1st

The Blue Jays have underperformed offensively this season (.258 overall team BA, only 3.4 runs per game last 10 days) and they’ve not fared well outside of Rogers Centre (-$580). But the Devil Rays are floundering (-$1485) and their lack of pitching (5.82 ERA) makes it impossible to back them. PREFERRED: None.

                    Kansas City at Minnesota (4) 30th, 31st, 1st, 2nd

The Twins have a losing record against the Royals in head to head play this year (2-3, -$215) and KC has a terrific record vs. righthanders in road games (+$1260). Minnesota has had a very difficult time with lefthanders at home (-$755), so we’ve got a few angles where we can use the visitor. PREFERRED: Lefthanders vs. the Twins/Royals in night games vs. righthanders.

                    L.A. Angels at Seattle (3) 30th, 31st, 1st

The Angels have dominated the Mariners in head to head play so far (7-2, +$460) but Seattle has outperformed LA in recent weeks, closing to within a couple of games in the AL West. They’ve been very tough at Safeco (+$1115) while the Angels have struggled on the road (-$170 overall). We’ll stick with the hot home team in this key division matchup. PREFERRED: Mariners in all games.

                    Detroit at Oakland (3) 30th, 31st, 1st

The Athletics have produced the fewest runs in the AL this year (only 4.1 per game with a .251 team BA), proving that you need more than great pitching to compete effectively. They’ve lost money here at McAfee

(-$1305) and the Tigers are the best road team in baseball (+$1685). PREFERRED: Tigers in all games.

                    *SERIES BEGINNING TUESDAY JULY 31*

                    Cincinnati at Washington (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

The Reds have had a difficult season and because more was expected of them their money losses are enormous (-$1675 so far). Bobby Livingston has given them a lefty in the starting rotation, and he’s likely to see action. The Nationals have have turned a nice profit vs. southpaws in 2007 (+$910). PREFERRED: Nationals vs. Livingston.

                    Colorado at Florida (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

The Rockies are having a solid, if not spectacular season, but 2007 has been a big disappointment for the Marlins, The visitor should fare well in righty vs. righty matchups. Florida is only 10-18 vs. righties in night games here at Dolphin Stadium (-$1125) while Colorado is in the black vs. righties in all settings (+$945 with 5.0 runs per game. Play this series accordingly. PREFERRED: Rockies when righty meets righty.

                    St. Louis at Pittsburgh (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

We haven’t had many situations where we can use the Cardinals this year, but we may get some opportunities at PNC Park in this series. St. Louis has turned a profit vs. lefties in road games (+$540) and the Pirates rotation s loaded with southpaws. Pittsburgh is slumping since the break (1-8, -$740 last 10 days) and they’ve lost money at home this year (-$845). PREFERRED: Cardinals vs. lefthanders.

                    Houston at Atlanta (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

Logic suggests the Braves should win at least 2 out of 3, given Houston’s lousy record in 2007 (42-56,

-$1860) and the fact that Atlanta has been playing well since June. But Atlanta still has lost money here at Turner Field (-$780) so it’s difficult to give them a wholehearted recommendation. PREFERRED: None.

                    N.Y. Mets at Milwaukee (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

The Brewers have been a sensational home team (+$1290) but the Mets are 18-8 in road games vs. righthanders at night (+$1105) so a degree of caution is advised. They’ve had much more difficulty in day games vs. righthanders (-$720) so perhaps we’ll have an opportunity to use the home team in Thursday’s afternoon contest. PREFERRED: Righthanders vs. the Mets in day games.

                    Arizona at San Diego (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

The Padres had a terrible weekend hosting the Phillies at Petco Park, and their inability to score runs is taking its toll (only 4.1 per game, .242 team BA, lowest in the league). They’ve fared poorly vs. righthanders at home (-$995) and the D’Backs have already won 5 of 8 in head to head play (+$160). Take a shot vs. David Wells (4.57 ERA) who is set to make a start in this series, if the matchup permits. PREFERRED: Righthanders vs. D. Wells.

                    San Francisco at L.A. Dodgers (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

The Dodgers are a much better team than the Giants and should win at least 2 out of 3 games in this series, having prevailed in 6 of the first 9 head to head meetings. But prices tend to be high on LA when they play here at Chavez Ravine, so we’ll limit ourselves to playing against the Giants’ lefthanders, given LA’ 18-10 (+$645) record vs. southpaws. PREFERRED: Dodgers vs. lefthanders.

                    Chicago W. Sox at N.Y. Yankees (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

The Yankees are clicking offensively, and even though their overall numbers money-wise are horrible

(-$1970) this looks like a bad time to go against them, especially with a lackluster Chicago team with the worst stats in the league (.243 team BA, 4.73 ERA). But prices on the home team will be prohibitive. PREFERRED: None.

                    Baltimore at Boston (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

The Red hot have been pitiful against righthanders in night games at Fenway (10-13, -$1275) but they are 21-5 in day games against righties (+$1525). It’s also worth noting that Boston has lost money vs. lefthanders (-$620) and it appears they’ll be facing Eric Bedard (3.12 in 21 starts) at some point. PREFERRED: Bedard/Red Sox vs. righties in day games/Righthanders vs. the Red Sox in night games.

                    Texas at Cleveland (3) 31st, 1st, 2nd

The Tribe checks in with a 5-1 record vs. the Rangers in head to head play (+$375) and their numbers at Jacobs Field are spectacular (34-15, +$1065). Prices could be high, but if the number is not to unreasonable, we’ll consider taking a shot with the superior home team. PREFERRED: Indians at -170 or less.

                        Streaking Pitchers

                        Tuesday, July 31

                        Hot

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) - Bedard tries to keep his outstanding hot streak going tonight when the Orioles face the AL East-leading Red Sox. The Orioles are currently playing some of their best ball of the season and Bedard is a big part of it. The left-hander is 6-0 with a 1.89 ERA and a .149 opponent batting average over his last seven starts. This will be Bedard's first start against the favored Sox this year and he is 3-4 with a 5.44 ERA lifetime in nine appearances. The under is 7-1-1 in Bedard's last nine starts as a road underdog.

Fausto Carmona (Cleveland Indians) - Cleveland bettors are expected to get rich when the Tribe host the last-place Rangers for three games at Jacobs field starting tonight. Carmona, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his last start will take the hill for the Indians. The right-hander has matched his career high by winning his fifth straight start and has a 1.57 ERA in July. Carmona comes into this game with an 18-inning scoreless streak and has already beaten Texas once this season.

Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) - All eyes will be on Barry Bonds tonight but if Brad Penny has his say the seven-time NL MVP will go homerless once again. Penny will try to become the first Dodgers pitcher to start 14-1 since Phil Regan in 1966 and keep Major League history on hold for one more night. The right-hander won his third start in a row and eighth straight decision on Thursday against the Rockies. Penny is 6-0 with a 2.35 ERA in 11 home starts against NL opponents this season.

                        Cold

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - The slumping Contreras allowed nine runs and 12 hits in 4 2-3 innings of a 13-9 defeat to Detroit on Wednesday, dropping him to 0-6 with a 9.41 ERA since June 18. The former Yankee will attempt to keep Alex Rodriguez sitting at 499 homers and improve on a 2-3 career record against the Yankees. Contreras has lost both his starts versus New York this season, but has a 3.21 ERA in those outings. The over is 5-0 in the right-handers last five starts as an underdog.

Jeff Weaver (Seattle Mariners) - Weaver hopes to stop a personal three-game skid tonight, hoping for his first victory in over a month. The right-hander has only two victories since returning from a month on the DL and is looking for more run support from the Mariners. Weaver has only allowed three runs or less eight times in his last nine starts. He is 5-5 with a 2.72 ERA in 11 career starts against the favored L.A. Angels.

                              Tuesday, July 31

Colorado Rockies at Florida Marlins: (-104, 9)

Colorado begins its six-game East Coast road swing in Florida with right-hander Aaron Cook charged with the duty of getting the team off on the right foot.

Cook was impressive over his last six starts, outside a shaky five-run effort against the Phillies. He's notched a 2.51 ERA during this stretch. Cook has also kept his pitch counts down mostly due to his improving sinker. He threw only 74 pitches in his last start and averages just over 14 pitches per inning this season.

                              Pick: Rockies -104

New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers: (+104, 9)

The Brewers' road woes continued this past week during their eight-game road trip, which they finished 2-6.

Milwaukee returns home to Miller Park today after a day off to lick its wounds. The Brewers are the National League’s best home team over the past three seasons (130-85) including a 36-17 home record this year.

"The only thing I can come up with is that it's a mindset," manager Ned Yost told MLB.com. "That's the only thing it can be."

Today’s starter, Jeff Suppan, has reflected the team’s black-and-white play. The right-hander is 5-2 inside Miller Park with a 4.23 ERA, compared to 3-7 on the road with an ERA just under 6.00.

                              Pick: Brewers +104

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres: (+106, 7)

An eight-game winning streak has put Arizona a half game up on the Padres at the top of the National League West standings. The two teams start a crucial three-game set today in San Diego.

D-Backs ace Brandon Webb is hunting for the elusive win against San Diego this season after going 0-1 with a 2.49 ERA in three starts against the Padres. Webb is 9-8 overall with a 3.23 ERA this season.

"We go into San Diego with Brandon Webb on the mound, so we'll feel confident going out there," manager Bob Melvin told reporters.

Webb snapped a three-game slump in his last start, throwing seven shutout innings against the Marlins. Webb finally received run support from Arizona’s lineup in the win after getting an average of just over two runs in his previous nine appearances.

                              Pick: Diamondbacks -114
