    Six-pack for Sunday

-- Brewers grabbed 7-2 lead in second inning Saturday, and made it stand, as they hammered Cubs 13-4, and got lead in NL Central back up to 7.5 games over Chicago.

-- CC Sabathia is first Indian pitcher with dozen wins before the All-Star Break since Gaylord Perry back in 1974.

-- Padre pitcher Chris Young is married to granddaughter of hockey legend Lester Patrick.

-- 60 of Trevor Hoffman's 505 career saves have come at the expense of the Dodgers, San Diego's arch-rival.

-- Padres are now 20-9 in last 29 games against the Dodgers

-- Rick Ankiel hit his 22nd homer for Memphis Redbirds on Saturday; looks like he'll make it back to majors, this time as an outfielder, after failing as a pitcher. Good for him.

Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) Phillies have already used 24 pitchers this season, nine of whom have started a game; franchise record is 27, back in '00, but this season is only half over.

      12) This weekend's series vs Mets was huge for their chances in 2007; yet three of four games were started by pitchers who, coming into weekend, had started total of four games in MLB. The other game was started by "veteran" Hamels, in his 2nd year in major leagues.

      11) On bright side, Food Network has declared Citizens' Bank Park to have the best food any ballpark in major leagues. Too bad the pitching staff gives the Phillies' fans heartburn.

      10) Mets' manager Willie Randolph was named as a coach for All-Star Game, but will have surgery on his rotator cuff during the three days off instead.

      9) Umpire Cuzzi recently umpired Verlander's no-hitter, after his previous game behind plate was Schilling's one-hitter in Oakland. The last umpire to work no-hitters in consecutive games behind plate was Deegan in '77 (Eckersley/Colborn).

      8) David Ortiz will be starting first baseman for AL, but he is not a first baseman, except when Red Sox play in NL parks. It is ludicrous and absurd not to have the DH in All-Star Game. Who the hell wants to watch pitchers hit in that game?

      7) You can go to Dodger Stadium and buy a family plan for a mere $62; for that, you get four tickets, four Dodger Dogs and four Cokes. A ticket, Coke and hot dog for $15.50. Not bad.

      6) We talked during week about the $50,000-buy in for poker tournament in Vegas, a HORSE tournament that tests players in five different games. Well, the final table was an epic 15-hr marathon, starting at 2pm, ending at 5am, before Freddy Deeb a Danny DeVito-lookalike, won the $2.3M first prize. This will be fun to watch when ESPN shows it later in summer.

      5) It is July 1st, and Devil Rays haven't played Red Sox yet, and they're in same division. That means 34 of Devil Rays' 81 second half games are vs Boston or Bronx, which makes them a favorite to lose 100+ games again this season.

      4) A truck driver from Oklahoma has winning powerball ticket worth $105.8M; he and his wife decided to take lump sum of $33.3M, after taxes, instead of having it paid off over next 29 years (he is 64). You lose $72.5M in taxes? What a country.

      3) Dodger games are only place you're liable to hear about the Balkan Peninsula; Vin Scully was describing how Padre third baseman Kouzmanoff is of Macedonian descent, not Russian so we got a mini-history lesson on the Balkan Peninsula. If it isn't, it should be mandatory for every young announcer to listen to Scully, he is still that good.

      2) Nomar Garciaparra broke a 231-AB homerless streak when he hit one off Peavy Saturday. The Padre ace hadn't tossed a gopher ball in over 80 innings.

      1) By the way, Phillies lost 9,995th game in franchise history Saturday. No pro sports team has lost more than the Phillies. Lets see them use that on ads for their cable broadcasts.

Pro Basketball (women) – Hot Lines

          WNBA
          Hot Lines

          Sunday, July 1

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Sunday’s best WNBA bets

Indiana Fever at Washington Mystics (-1, 153 ½)

Sunday’s early game looks like a mismatch at first glance as 10-4 Indiana visits the nation’s capital to take on the 5-10 Mystics.

All five of Washington’s wins, however, have come in its last seven games and the Mystics most recently beat the defending champion Shock as 2 ½-point home underdogs. Friday’s upset win followed a four-game road trip in which the Mystics, previously winless on the road, went 3-1 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS).

The Mystics overcame a 16-point deficit in the second half against Detroit and scored the game’s final nine points. Alana Beard had her lowest-scoring game since mid-June but still played the hero with her last-minute three-point play.

"Our group really, really grew up tonight," interim head coach Tree Rollins told the Washington Post.

Indiana remains one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, but the Fever have dropped three of their last five games despite being favored in all of them.

          Pick: Mystics -1

San Antonio Silver Stars at Detroit Shock (-7, 143)

The Silver Stars and Shock meet for the first time in 2007 on Sunday, with Detroit winning and covering the spread in each of the teams’ two head-to-head meetings last summer.

The Shock want to bounce back from their collapse in Washington on Friday night. The team’s 5-1 SU record at the Palace of Auburn Hills says they’re likely to win at home, but their 2-4 ATS home record says “bettors beware” when the Shock are laying points. Detroit has played only three home games since May and failed to cover the spread in all of them.

Cheryl Ford’s absence continues to hurt. The forward, who would lead the WNBA in rebounding if she’d played enough to satisfy minimum-game requirements, has missed six of the last seven games and is questionable for Sunday. Detroit is 3-3 SU and 1-5 ATS without Ford, compared to 8-0 SU and 5-3 ATS with her in the lineup.

San Antonio is coming off a pair of disappointing losses, but the Silver Stars were road underdogs twice in June and won both contests straight up.

          Pick: Silver Stars +7

Chicago Sky at Los Angeles Sparks (-1 ½, 152)

What happened to Jia Perkins? The guard, who'd scored in double digits only three times in her first 13 games, exploded for 39 points on 17-for-24 shooting in Sacramento on Friday night. She hit 5-of-7 trey attempts and led the Sky to a double-overtime win as a 7 ½-point road underdog, dishing out 10 assists as well to top her season-high tally of four.

"(Perkins) probably could have turned around and threw the ball up and it would have gone in,” Monarchs forward Adrian Williams said after the game.

Perkins now leads the Sky into L.A. for Sunday’s night’s latest tip-off. Chicago is 5-3 SU and ATS on the road in 2007, while the Sparks are 4-3 SU and 2-5 ATS at the Staples Center.

Los Angeles has alternated losses and wins at home since mid-June. After Friday night’s home loss to New York, the pattern says the Sparks are due for a win. Head coach Michael Cooper begs to differ.

"We are not a very good basketball team," Cooper told the Long Beach Press-Telegram after the 80-68 loss as a 5-point favorite. "This was a horrible, horrible exhibition again after playing Sacramento. We played like we didn't even know each other.”

          Pick: Sky +1 ½

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Sunday’s MLB betting notes

                  Tough times ahead for Tampa

Tampa Bay has lost five straight games and are 16 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. MLB.com points out that it’s not going to get any easier for the Devil Rays with 52 of their last 85 games of the season against .500-or-better teams.

That statistic doesn’t include games against the New York Yankees due to the Bronx Bombers' losing record. It also doesn’t tell you that 18 of those 85 games will be against the Red Sox, as Tampa has yet to play them this season.

"It ain't going to be easy," Rays outfielder Carl Crawford told MLB.com. "That's for sure. We're just going to have to keep going out and playing hard. Play hard and play smart. That's all we can do."

Tampa closes out a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians with James Shields (6-3, 3.81 ERA) set to start. The Indians counter with Cliff Lee (4-4, 5.37 ERA) and are –139 favorites to take the game.

                  Eckstein expected to return

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop David Eckstein is due to come off the disabled list on Saturday and could make his first appearance in over two weeks Sunday.

Eckstein went through an extensive workout Friday and would be a welcome addition for the Cards in the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds. The shortstop was batting .312 with 12 RBI and two home runs before back problems put him on the DL.

St. Louis will send Mike Maroth (5-2, 4.73 ERA) to the mound to face the Reds' Homer Bailey (2-1, 6.41 ERA) on Sunday. The Cards are +100 underdogs to take the game with the total set at 10½.

                  Kinsler’s quick recovery

Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler is expected to return to the lineup for Sunday’s series closer against the Boston Red Sox, according to an MLB.com report. He's missed the past two games due to a sprained left foot.

Kinsler was hurt on a swing-and-miss early in Thursday’s game against Detroit, and left the ballpark on crutches that night. But he was seen walking in Boston without them on Friday and is hopeful of a quick recovery.

"It shouldn't be too long," Kinsler told MLB.com. "I'm hoping it won't be too long. We did treatment when I got to the ballpark and it felt better than when I left the hotel."

Kinsler is batting .241 with 35 RBIs and 14 home runs for the season. Sunday’s game at Fenway features a pitching duel between Kameron Loe (4-6, 6.02 ERA) and Julian Tavarez (5-5, 4.60 ERA), with Boston the –174 favorites.

Third base a charm for Nomar?

L.A. Dodgers slugger Nomar Garciaparra looks set to continue at third base for the foreseeable future. He was moved there on Tuesday to accommodate the hot-hitting James Looney and says he has no problem with the change.

"This team has been like this since last year," Garciaparra told reporters in a press conference on Thursday. "I'm going to go out there and do whatever they ask me to do to help the team."

Nomar is not a stranger to the position – he has played 36 games as a third baseman managing a .249 average with 22 RBIs and seven homers. In his first two games since this week's change he failed to get a hit in nine at bats, but on Friday night he managed one RBI and 3 hits in 4 at bats. So far this season he's batting .273 with 39 RBIs and one home run.

With Garciaparra at third, the Dodgers will close out a three-game series at San Diego on Sunday. San Diego's Justin Germano (5-1, 2.67 ERA) will face Chad Billingsley (4-0, 4.01 ERA) on the mound. L.A. is –110 favorites.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Sunday MLB Gameday

Jeremy Bonderman, Dan Haren, and John Lackey will all be looking to add to their impressive win totals when they take the mound on Sunday. Here's your MLB Gameday …

Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees, 1:05pm ET
Dan Haren (9-2, 1.91 ERA) vs. Andy Pettitte (4-5, 3.24 ERA)

Haren went 3-0 with two no-decisions for the Athletics in the month of June, allowing no more than three earned runs in any of those five outings. The righthander boosted his season mark to 9-2 with that strong stretch, and lowered his ERA to a miniscule 1.91. Haren has also managed to strike out 93 batters over 117.2 innings of work this season.

Pettitte's season mark has sunk to 4-5, but his ERA is still a respectable 3.24. In the month of June the Yankees lefthander went 1-1 with three no-decisions, giving up four, five, and six earned runs in three of those outings. Last time out, on the road against the Orioles, Pettitte bounced back with seven strong innings, allowing just two earned runs.

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles, 1:35pm ET
John Lackey (10-5, 2.99 ERA) vs. Jeremy Guthrie (4-1, 2.45 ERA)

Lackey managed to go just 2-2 (with one no-decision) in the month of June, but overall he's 10-5 on the season with a 2.99 ERA. In his five June starts the Angels righthander allowed three or fewer earned runs three times, but gave up four runs to the Twins and was knocked around for six runs by the Astros. Lackey has fanned 82 batters this year.

Guthrie continues to pitch well for the Orioles. The righthander went just 1-0 with four no-decisions for Baltimore in the month of June, but he allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of those five outings. Guthrie is now 4-1 on the season, and his ERA is at 2.45. Last time out, against New York, Guthrie allowed two earned runs in 6 1-3 innings.

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers, 4:10pm ET
Justin Germano (5-1, 2.67 ERA) vs. Chad Billingsley (4-0, 4.01 ERA)

Germano went 2-1 with two no-decisions for the Padres in June, beating the Nationals and the Devil Rays but losing to the Orioles. The righthander surrendered three or fewer earned runs in four of those five outings, giving up five to the Mariners on June 8. Last time out, against the Giants, Germano allowed two earned runs over six innings pitched.

Billingsley has taken over Jason Schmidt's spot in the Dodgers' rotation, and he'll be looking to keep his 4-0 season record unblemished. In his last appearance, against the Diamondbacks on June 26, the righthander surrendered five earned runs on four hits over four innings, but came away with a no-decision. Billingsley's ERA sits at 4.01 now.

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers, 8:05pm ET
Scott Baker (2-2, 5.77 ERA) vs. Jeremy Bonderman (8-1, 3.90 ERA)

Baker made four starts in June, with mixed results. In his first two outings of the month the righthander allowed five and six earned runs to the Angels and Brewers, and picked up two losses. In his two most recent starts, though, Baker has held the Mets to only two earned runs and the Blue Jays to a single earned run, going 1-0 with a no-decision.

Bonderman went 4-1 for the Tigers in June, boosting his season mark to 8-1 and keeping his ERA steady at 3.90. The righthander has also struck out 82 batters in 90 innings of work in 2007. Bonderman's one loss in the month of June came last time out, when he allowed two earned runs on seven hits over seven innings against the Rangers.

                          Sunday, July 1

                          HOT

Buddy Carlyle (Atlanta Braves) - Carlyle has been a real pal to Braves backers recently. The right-hander has won four of the last five times he's taken the mound for Atlanta. He'll face the Marlins as a +114 road underdog today.

Cliff Lee (Cleveland Indians) - The former Arkansas Razorback has allowed three runs or less in his last three outings with his team winning each of those contests. The Tribe have helped out their lefty in a big way by scoring a total of 25 runs during those starts. Cleveland is listed as a -139 favorite against lowly Tampa Bay (see below) today.

Kyle Kendrick (Philadelphia Phillies) - Philadelphia sports fans are arguably the toughest on their hometown teams. You'd be upset too if your city hasn't won a major sports championship since the Sixers won the Larry O'Brien trophy back in 1983. But Philly sports fan can't be upset with Kendrick. He has made three starts in his rookie season and the Phillies have tasted victory each time. The righty puts his streak on the line today at home as a +111 underdog against the Mets.

                          COLD

James Shields (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - Tampa Bay hasn't been able to shield itself from losses when the California native has pitched recently. The Rays have scored less than seven runs total in his last three appearances, while his team has allowed the opposition to score a combined 25 runs during those three defeats. Tampa Bay enters its game in Cleveland as a +131 underdog.

Mike Bacsik (Washington Nationals) - Bacsik has made eight starts in a Nationals uniform this season and the team has a 1-7 record in those outings. He faces the Pirates for the second time in less than a month, but this time he goes in as an underdog. In fact, his previous outing against the Bucs was the only game he's been favored in all year. Bettors have since learned that it pays to bet against the southpaw. Pittsburgh's listed as a -145 favorite against Bacsik today.

                              Sunday, July 1

Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees (-133, 8 ½)

The great thing about the overwhelming public appeal of the New York Yankees is that it gives baseball bettors situations like today. With the Yankee Nation backing the Bronx at home, oddsmakers have hung an enticing dog tag on Oakland and star pitcher Danny Haren.

Haren, who leads the majors with a 1.91 ERA, usually raises the price on the A’s. His starts get an average moneyline of around -180, but today Oakland is a +130 road pup. The right-hander hasn’t given up more than three earned runs in a single start this season and is facing a lineup that mustered only one hit during Saturday’s contest.

Although he stumbled a bit against New York back on April 13, Haren is 3-0 with a 3.11 ERA in six career starts versus the Yankees.

                              Pick: Athletics +130

Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners (+106, 9 ½)

In honor of our Canadian readers, who are celebrating their nation’s 140th birthday today, we are taking a look at the Toronto Blue Jays’ matchup with the Mariners this afternoon.

Toronto is 4-4 on July 1 since 1999 and has won the last three games played on the national holiday. During these three contests the Blue Jays have outscored opponents 34-4. Before this winning stretch they were shut out for three straight years on Canada Day.

Toronto sends Shaun Marcum to the bump today hoping to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners. The right-hander has yet to record a loss in his nine starts this season but has six no-decisions. Toronto is 6-3 during Marcum’s appearances, who is 3-0 with a 2.26 ERA since taking a starting role in mid May.

                              Pick: Blue Jays -111

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (-164, 9 ½)

Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman no longer has to throw with a monkey on his back.

Bonderman was flirting with franchise history as well as being mentioned in the same breath as “undefeated season” after starting the year 8-0 in his first 14 starts. Monday’s 8-3 loss to the Texas Rangers this past Monday was his first defeat in his last 21 starts carrying over from 2006.

The righty didn’t pitch all that badly, allowing only two earned runs in seven innings which included a season-high nine strikeouts. However, Bonderman did make a costly throwing error which led to two unearned scores by the Rangers.

He tries to get back on track today against the Twins, who despite scoring 27 total runs in their last three games haven’t been hitting the ball that well. During those contests, Minnesota batted only .245 at the plate, but Twins batters also hit six home runs and walked 14 times.

                              Pick: Tigers -164
