    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs (1:05 PM ET)
San Diego starter Chris Young is a perfect 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA in three career starts against Chicago. He struck out a season-high 10 batters on May 24 against the Cubs, but San Diego eventually lost the game 3-1. EDGE: PADRES
Young is a solid 4-2 with a 3.63 ERA in seven starts away from Petco Park this season, after going a perfect 6-0 with a 2.41 ERA on the road last in 2006. EDGE: PADRES
Chicago's Carlos Zambrano is a perfect 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA in six career starts against San Diego. He's allowed just three home runs in 37 1/3 innings against them. BIG EDGE: CUBS
Zambrano picked up just his second home victory of the season against the Astros last time out, as the right-hander is 2-4 with a 6.34 ERA in seven starts at Wrigley Field. SLIGHT EDGE: PADRES
The OVER is 6-1 in Young's last seven road starts.

New York Mets at New York Yankees (1:05 PM ET)
Mets left-hander Tom Glavine is 5-2 with a 3.79 ERA in nine career starts against the Yankees. He picked up a 10-7 victory over the Bronx Bombers on May 19, after going six innings and allowing three runs on nine hits. EDGE: METS
The Mets have lost four straight games with Glavine on the hill, being outscored 24-10 in the process. EDGE: YANKEES
Yankees rookie starter Tyler Clippard picked up his first Major League victory against the Mets on May 20, allowing just one run and three hits over six innings. Things could be a bit different the second time around now that the Mets hitters have faced him. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES
Clippard is entering off his worst start of the season, allowing six runs and six hits against Pittsburgh. EDGE: METS
The OVER is 4-1 in Glavine's last five starts versus the Yankees.

San Francisco Giants at Boston Red Sox (FOX | 3:55 PM ET)
San Francisco's Matt Cain is a disappointing 1-3 on the road this season despite having a fantastic 2.62 ERA. EDGE: UNDER
The Giants have lost five straight games with Cain on the bump, mainly because of their offensive struggles. San Francisco has managed to score just 10 runs over that span. EDGE: RED SOX & UNDER
Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka is 3-2 with a 5.62 ERA at Fenway Park in 2007. He allowed a season-high 12 hits in his last home outing against the Indians, as the Red Sox lost 8-4. EDGE: OVER
Boston has lost three straight games with its Japanese import on the hill, scoring just five runs against Arizona, Cleveland and Oakland. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS & UNDER
The Giants are 2-14 in Cain's last 16 starts.

Atlanta Braves at Cleveland Indians (FOX | 3:55 PM ET)
Braves veteran starter John Smoltz is a rock-solid 3-1 with a 3.89 ERA on the road this season through seven starts. EDGE: BRAVES
Smoltz should have an added advantage against the Indians this afternoon, since the Tribe has faced him just once in his career. He threw a perfect 1 1/3 innings as a reliever against them. EDGE: BRAVES
Cleveland's Paul Byrd is a disappointing 2-4 with a 4.79 ERA in 12 career games against Atlanta. The Jones duo for Atlanta (Andruw and Chipper) have four career home runs against him in 26 at-bats combined. EDGE: BRAVES
Byrd is a fantastic 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA in three daytime starts this season and 28-16 in his career. BIG EDGE: INDIANS
The OVER is 4-0 in Smoltz's last four starts with 10 days or more of rest.

Los Angeles Angels at Los Angeles Dodgers (FOX | 3:55 PM ET)
Angels second-year starter Jered Weaver has just one career start against the Dodgers, tallying a victory after allowing just two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings. EDGE: ANGELS
Weaver is 5-1 with a 3.26 ERA in eight career daytime starts. EDGE: ANGELS
Dodgers right-hander Jason Schmidt is a dismal 0-3 with a 12.60 ERA in three starts this season at Dodger Stadium. BIG EDGE: ANGELS
The Dodgers have lost four straight games with Schmidt on the hill, getting outscored 25-10 over that span. EDGE: ANGELS
The OVER is 12-3-1 in the last 16 meetings in Los Angeles.

Detroit Tigers at Philadelphia Phillies (7:05 PM ET)
Detroit's Andrew Miller is a perfect 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA during his rookie campaign, picking up victories over the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals. EDGE: TIGERS
Miller has benefited from 29 runs of support during his two outings this season. BIG EDGE: OVER
Phillies left-hander Jamie Moyer is 1-2 with a 5.58 ERA in five home starts tihs season. He's allowed 16 runs in his last 17 1/3 innings at Citizens Bank. EDGE: TIGERS

      MLB Betting Notes

      Saturday, June 16

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Saturday’s MLB betting notes

      Wrigley reversal?

The wind is often the biggest factor when playing the totals at Wrigley Field, but Saturday’s pitching matchup of Chris Young and Carlos Zambrano steals center stage in the afternoon game between the San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs.

The Padres have played over the total in six of Young’s seven starts away from home, while the Cubs have played over just as often in Zambrano’s seven home starts. There are reasons, however, to look at the under on Saturday afternoon.

Young has been unhittable and has an ERA of 1.34 over his last eight starts. And Zambrano’s flaunted his Cy Young potential in his two starts since a dust-up with catcher Michael Barrett.

Young and Zambrano have each faced their respective Saturday opponents three times since 2004. Five of those six combined games played under the total and the average total in those half-dozen games was 5.5 runs.

      The Yankee Clippard

Tyler Clippard makes his sixth career start for the New York Yankees on Saturday against Tom Glavine, making his 650th start for the visiting New York Mets.

Clippard made his MLB debut against the Mets on May 20 and halted a Yankees losing streak behind six solid innings. His first start remains his best one to date, however, and the rookie was particularly shaky in last Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Yanks won 13-6 as -240 favorites, no thanks to Clippard and his 6 earned runs allowed over just 3 2/3 innings.

With Phil Hughes close to full health and Kei Igawa improving his command in Triple A, Clippard is running out of chances to hold on to the fifth starting slot in the New York rotation.

      No repeat at Rogers

Levale Speigner gave loyal Washington Nationals backers a reason to celebrate last Saturday when he led the Nats to a road win over the Minnesota Twins as +375 underdogs. He’d been hit hard (and often) in his previous four starts.

“Me and the pitching coach worked on stuff to get me back, focused on just throwing strikes,” Speigner told the Thomasville (Ga.) Times-Enterprise, his hometown newspaper. “We changed a couple of grips that really helped a lot. The main thing I changed was my slider grip. It took some miles per hour off the ball and it kind of got hitters more out front.”

Speigner finally pitches again on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, but bettors won’t get similar value no matter how well Speigner pitches. His opponent last Saturday was Johan Santana. This Saturday it’s Shaun Marcum, who won’t command the oddsmakers’ respect like Santana did.

And you’d think “Beantown” would have lots of runs …

The San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox meet this weekend for the first time since 2004 and they’ll likely celebrate their getting-to-know-you phase by playing quick, low-scoring games.

The Giants’ offense is underperforming by its own anemic standards, topping four runs only once in their last nine games through Thursday, playing under the total six times over that span. The Red Sox, surprisingly, are even worse than the Giants at the plate, being held to two or fewer runs in seven of their last nine games before Friday’s series opener.

The fact that Saturday afternoon’s pitching matchup features two of the games best young arms won’t keep bettors away from the under either, as Matt Cain takes on Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Old man take a look at my life, I’m (not) a lot like you

Saturday’s pitching matchup features another pup / greybeard matchup as Andrew Miller and the Detroit Tigers face off against Jamie Moyer and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Miller and Moyer are both left-handed pitchers, but the comparison stops there. Miller is a 6-foot-6 giant with big-time heat, while Moyer barely reaches 6-foot and has made hay with his junkballing ways. Miller just turned 22 and is seen as a can’t-miss kid, while Moyer is going on 45 and didn’t hit his stride as a starter until he moved to the Seattle Mariners in his mid-30s.

Miller is 2-0 so far as a major-leaguer and will be given every opportunity to prove himself on the postseason-contending Tigers.

"Andrew Miller will either be in this rotation or in the minor leagues," manager Jim Leyland told the Detroit Free-Press. "That, you can take to the bank."

Going Bush-whacking in the Twin Cities

David Bush hasn’t faced the Minnesota Twins very often in his career, but the Milwaukee Brewers right-hander is winless in his three starts against the Twins. The Brew Crew has been favored in Bush’s last two starts against Minnesota, but dropped them both including a 5-2 loss at Miller Park on May 19.

Milwaukee has slowed down considerably after a lightning-fast start to the season and it shows in Bush’s recent starts. The Brewers have lost seven of his last nine starts, costing regular backers 6.10 units in the process.

Minnesota’s Saturday starter, Boof Bonser, showed that he can handle the Brewers the day before Bush’s loss. Bonser struck out 11 in seven innings while allowing only three hits and one walk in an 8-1 Twins win.

      Youngsters with no self-control

The Florida Marlins have lots of talented young batsmen, but the impatience they’ve displayed so far in June should concern backers. Through Thursday’s game, the Marlins’ lineup had struck out 115 times in June while walking only 39 times, a ratio that’ll leave the Fish floundering if something doesn’t change.

Florida fell to the Cleveland Indians on Thursday despite sending ace Dontrelle Willis to the hill against Jason Stanford, who hadn’t started an MLB game since 2004. Willis was fine but the Marlins didn’t make Stanford work at all. He threw only 89 pitches over six innings and struck out seven Florida batters while walking none.

That bodes well for Jorge De La Rosa, who starts for the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night. De La Rosa started the season strong, but has allowed more walks then he’s picked up strikeouts over his last four starts. The free-swinging Floridians might be just what he needs.

        Gameday

        Saturday, June 16

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        MLB Saturday Gameday

Interleague play continues throughout baseball this weekend, but the best pitching matchup on Saturday looks to be in the lone NL series between San Diego and the Cubs. Two other prime matchups on Saturday include the Mets and Yankees clashing in another subway series, while Barry Bonds and the Giants visit Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Red Sox at Fenway.

        San Diego at Chicago Cubs
        Chris Young (6-3, 2.43) vs. Carlos Zambrano (7-5, 4.89)

The Padres hold a slim lead in the NL West in what has become a three-team race between San Diego, Los Angeles and Arizona. San Diego always has a shot at a win when Jake Peavy takes the hill, and it looks like we may be able to say the same about Chris Young soon. The crafty righthander has picked up a pair of no-decisions in his last two starts despite turning in two solid performances. Against the Mariners last week, Young pitched 6 2-3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Five days earlier he tossed seven shutout innings against the Dodgers. Young hasn’t taken a loss since May 12th and if he continues to pitch well, that streak could go beyond June.

Ever since Zambrano got into a fight with catcher Michael Barrett in the Cubs dugout he’s been a different pitcher. Basically he’s been the pitcher everyone expected him to be since the season began. In his last two starts Zambrano is 2-0, after allowing one unearned run in eight innings versus Seattle and holding Milwaukee to two earned runs in 6 2-3 innings a week earlier. In those two starts Zambrano racked up 17 strikeouts, and perhaps he's finally turned the corner on his erratic season.

        N.Y. Mets at N.Y. Yankees
Tom Glavine (5-4) vs. Tyler Clippard (3-1, 5.32)

If you’re looking for a high-scoring Saturday game this might be the one. Both Tom Glavine and Tyler Clippard were shelled in their last starts, and they’ll be facing two of the toughest lineups in all of baseball.

Glavine is 0-3 in his last four starts and it looks like his age may finally be catching up with him. Last week versus Detroit, Glavine was hammered for nine runs on 11 hits in only 4 1-3 innings.

Clippard made only his fifth major league start against Pittsburgh last week, and it turned out to be the worst performance of his young career. The rookie only lasted 3 2-3 innings after allowing six earned runs. Clippard was lucky to escape with a no-decision, after the Yankees’ offense gave him a lift by scoring 13 runs in a 13-6 Yankee win.

        San Francisco at Boston
        Matt Cain (2-6, 4.52) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (7-5, 4.52)

Barry Bonds' first visit to Fenway Park continues Saturday as he gets another opportunity to DH while sitting only nine homers back of all-time home run king Hank Aaron.

The number of runs Bonds and his teammates put up will likely determine whether or not San Francisco gets a win on Saturday with Matt Cain on the mound. Cain has to be the unluckiest starting pitcher in baseball this season. In his last start Cain pitched eight strong innings, allowing only one run on five hits with eight strikeouts, but took the loss in a 2-0 Giants defeat. A lack of run support has been Cain’s Achilles heel all season long. In five of Cain’s six losses this season he’s allowed four or fewer runs. In those five losses the Giants have scored a combined six runs for Cain.

Cain’s opponent on Saturday, Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, has been in the same boat as Cain of late. Matsuzaka is 0-3 in his last three starts, despite pitching rather effectively in two of them. In his last start against Arizona, Matsuzaka allowed only two runs in six innings while striking out nine, but took the loss in a 5-1 defeat. Prior to that Matsuzaka allowed two runs in seven innings versus Oakland, but came out with a loss in a 2-0 Boston setback.

              WNBA Betting Notes

              Saturday, June 16

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              WNBA betting news and notes

Thanks to a break in the Indiana Fever's schedule, Tamika Catchings will spend Father's Day with her dad, former NBA player Harvey Catchings.

After playing at Detroit on Saturday night, Indiana doesn't play again until facing Connecticut the following Friday. Father and daughter planned to fly to Los Angeles on Sunday for a photo shoot, and the four-time WNBA All-Star was looking forward to the time with her childhood basketball role model.

''I didn't really want to be like (Michael) Jordan, I wanted to be like my dad,'' Catchings said. ''Just because of watching him, we thought he was all-world back then.''

Harvey Catchings played in the NBA for 11 seasons before finishing his playing career with a year in Italy.

''I remember watching him play more so overseas after he got done playing here,'' Tamika Catchings said. ''It was cool to be able to talk about living over in Italy, watching our dad play basketball and going to an international school.''

Catchings, her brother Kenyon and sister Tauja were encouraged by their parents to play a wide variety of sports - and there wasn't any pressure to play their father's game. However, all three were basketball stars in high school, and Tauja starred in college at Illinois.

The fatherly advice she receives these days, Catchings said, is to ''Go out there and work hard ... have fun, and if you stop enjoying the game, basically stop playing. If basketball is not fulfilling you at that moment, look at doing something else.''

Catchings won an NCAA championship in 1998 at Tennessee, an Olympic gold medal in 2004, and has finished in the top three in voting for the WNBA MVP award four times. She perennially leads the Fever in points, rebounds, assists and steals, and the two-time defensive player of the year earlier this week became the 17th player in league history to top 3,000 points for her career.

All those accomplishments have helped her gain her own identity, separate from her connection to her father.

''When we were growing up, in high school or even the beginning of college, you'd always read 'Tamika Catchings, daughter of former NBA player Harvey Catchings,''' she said. ''Now, when he comes up or wherever we go, people introduce him as 'Harvey Catchings. You know, Tamika Catchings, her dad.' It's kind of funny, it's like a 360. ... Now you made your own name, people know who you are and it's very rewarding.''

              ---

NEW ENVIRONMENT: After a slow start with her third WNBA team in a little more than a year, Monique Currie is settling in nicely with the Washington Mystics.

Currie averaged 4.8 points in her first four games with Washington before breaking out with strong games against New York and Phoenix - including a career high 25 points in an 86-69 victory over the Mercury on Wednesday night that snapped the Mystics' season-opening eight-game losing streak.

''I started to become more comfortable with everything, with the players, with the plays,'' Currie said. ''It's a really big confidence booster. I haven't been playing like I would've liked to since I've gotten here.''

The former Duke star, drafted by Charlotte in 2006 and then selected by Chicago in the dispersal draft in January after the Sting folded, was acquired by the Mystics on May 24 in the trade that sent Chasity Melvin to the Sky.

''It is tough because you can't get comfortable or get a feel for how things go,'' Currie said. ''Every organization is different.''

Washington interim coach Tree Rollins believes part of the problem was matching the plays the team runs to fit Currie's strengths.

''We had to look at different sets for her,'' he said. ''She's an open-court player so now we got to try this set, try this set, and find the set that's good for her to get the ball where she likes.''

Mystics star Alana Beard is glad to be reunited with her former college teammate and wasn't worried by Currie's initial struggles.

''I played with Monique for three years (at Duke) and I know what she can do,'' Beard said. ''It was just transition, a period of adjustment to a new team. Now she understands what we want from her. She's going to continue to do it every night. She's a very consistent player.''

              ---

SURPRISING DECISION: Chamique Holdsclaw's surprising retirement was the talk of the league this week.

The 29-year-old forward, a six-time All Star who retired Monday just five games into her ninth season in the WNBA, was leading the Los Angeles Sparks with a team-high 15.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists this year.

''It was definitely a surprise,'' said Sparks forward Murriel Page, Holdsclaw's closest friend on the team. ''She was excited about getting the opportunity to play for (coach Michael Cooper). Even after our game against Minnesota (Friday night), she was still excited.

''Two days later, she's like, 'Oh, I don't know if I want to play anymore. I just kind of want to do other things.'''

Washington's Nakia Sanford, who played with Holdsclaw and Page when all three were with the Mystics, was shocked when she heard the news.

''She's been playing for a very long time I think sometimes you get burnt out,'' Sanford said. ''I'm imagining maybe that's what that is. That's the only thing I could think of.''

              ---

STATS: Minnesota's Seimone Augustus entered the weekend leading the league in scoring, averaging 22.6 points while shooting 52 percent from the field. ... Detroit's Cheryl Ford was tops in rebounding at 9.5 per game. ... Seattle's Lauren Jackson was second in scoring (22.3) and rebounding (8.9). ... Phoenix's Diana Taurasi was third in scoring (19.3), followed by Houston's Tina Thompson (19.0). ... Chasity Melvin is averaging 12.0 points and 8.3 rebounds in six games with Chicago. ... Houston entered the weekend as the league's only remaining winless team. The Comets (0-8), playing without the injured Sheryl Swoopes, matched Washington for the second-worst start in league history. The Mystics beat Phoenix on Wednesday night for their first win. Detroit set the WNBA record by opening the 2002 season 0-13. ... New York led the league in 3-point shooting (43 percent), despite making only 19 of 61 (31 percent) its last three games. ... Indiana's franchise-best 8-1 start is also the Fever's best nine-game stretch at any time in a season.

              ---

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: ''What did we have to lose? We were already 0-8. That team's the one that's got the pressure on them. They can come into this game and be like 'We don't want to lose to an 0-8 team.' So, what kind of pressure do we have on ourselves?'' - Mystics star Alana Beard, after Washington beat Phoenix on Wednesday night for its first victory of the season.

                  Saturday, June 16

Columbus (6-8) @ Philadelphia (6-8) -- Destroyers lost last four games, by 18,9,21,13 points; they're 2-5 since beating Philly 44-21 in the Week 8 Monday nighter, holding Soul to lowest output of season. Under is 6-1-1 in last eight Columbus games, but last five Philly games all went over total. Philly lost eight of last ten after 4-0 start; they might be tired, after having Week 1 bye, so they haven't had week off in almost four months.

Tampa Bay (7-7) @ Grand Rapids (4-10) -- Storm is 6-1 since its bye, after an 0-5 start; they've won three of last four road games, losing only at 13-2 Georgia. Over is 6-2 in last eight Rampage tilts, 3-1 in Storm's last four games. Tampa's road wins are by 21,3 and 6 points, so not like they crush people, but they are back to .500. Nashville (6-8) @ Kansas City (9-5) -- Surging Brigade won three in row, five of six, eight of last 11 games, but they lost a Week 11 game in Nashville, 49-40 (+3), as they committed dozen penalties for 72 yards, offsetting 30-yard advantage from scrimmage. Kats won last week in Vegas after their bye; they're 5-2 vs spread on road this season, with losses by 17,7,16 points (4-3 SU). Over is 5-2 in Nashville's road games this season.

New York (5-9) @ Dallas (13-1) -- Dallas almost got caught asleep at wheel last week, nipping New Orleans 80-79 at home (-16), as Voodoo averaged over eight yards per play; they opened season by crushing Dragons 60-7 on Long Island (-8), in game that was 33-0 at the half. Dragons had rallied for three-game win streak in Garcia's return, but with Davey at helm last week, New York lost by 21 at home to Orlando. Last five Dragon games went over.

Arizona (4-11) @ San Jose (11-3) -- This is it for Arizona's season, as they have Week 17 bye; they lost 56-49 at home to San Jose in Week 10 (+7), in game that was basically even statistically. San Jose has won seven games in row, five by 14+ points; they're 6-1 as home favorite, winning by 20,28,24,21,27,25,7 points. Rattlers are 1-3 in last five games; they lost ESPN2 home game Monday Under is 8-2 in last ten Arizona games.

                    Six-pack for Saturday

                    - Jose Reyes had an upper deck tater, two other hits, three steals, yet the Mets only scored two runs. The offense has issues, although the flaky Oliver Perez was brilliant.

-- What happened to the White Sox? Their offense stinks.

-- David Ortiz got tossed in first inning for arguing a called third strike, and Red Sox still scored ten runs.

-- Cardinals lost last two games, allowing 31 runs; things are so bad, Speizio pitched last inning in Oakland Friday.

-- Brewers have righted their ship and are winning again; it would be great for baseball if they made the playoffs.

-- How can a Texas-Cincinnati over/under be only 10.5? The game was over in the fifth inning. No pitching, brother......

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

                      13) How hard is Oakmont? I mean, who plays there Monday, after the US Open? Are the members all masochistic? It can't be much fun for Joe Hacker to play that brutal a course....

                      12) Can a pro golfer request not to be in the same foursome as Eldrick Woods? No one ever seems to beat him heads up, so why would you want to be in same group as him?

                      11) The Cavaliers' old arena from the 70's, Richfield Coliseum, was later used as a prison.

                      10) Cavaliers' Donyell Marshall is great nephew of former Colt running back Lenny Moore, a super player in the 60's.

                      9) Sad news from Indiana, where football coach Hoeppner is not going to coach this season; he has had health problems for couple of years, and hasn't been in public since February. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Hoeppner, by the way, was Ben Roethlisberger's college coach, at Miami O.

                      8) Rice's starting pitcher in College World Series wore regular glasses, something you don't see every day.

                      7) I'd like to see the College World Series played with wooden bats. Lot of the kids will be playing pro ball soon anyway, it would be more fair to the pitchers, and quicker for TV people.

                      6) These Nationals-Blue Jays interleague games had little bit of meaning when Nationals were the Montreal Expos, but for the love of Pete, can we stop? They mean nothing now.

                      5) Tigers scored 72 runs in winning Bonderman's last seven starts; he doesn't need that much help.

                      4) Exactly how many Japanese media members are there? The Pirates have a very obscure pitcher named Masumi Kuwata, and there are twenty journalists following him around, more than probably follow the rest of the Pirate team. Why?????

                      3) I'm glad to say that my local Time-Warner cable system is picking up ESPNU in time for football season. Good move.

                      2) Last time the second round leader of US Open won event was Jim Furyk, four years ago.

                      1) In his career, Eldrick Woods is 10-19 in majors, on courses that are par 72; he is 2-22 on par 70-71 courses. Oakmont is 70

                          Milwaukee at Minnesota
The Brewers' bats came alive last night as they pounded out 15 hits and scored 11 runs against the Twins. The win was Milwaukee's third straight and fourth in its last five in interleague play. Milwaukee starter Dave Bush has struggled lately and has never beat the Twins (0-3), but does have a respectable ERA (4.50) against them. The Brewers were able to win in Bush's last appearance on Sunday (9-6 over Texas in 12 innings) thanks to the offense and look like a good underdog pick (+140) to do that again according to Dunkel, which has Milwaukee favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Milwaukee (+140). Here are all of today's games.

Atlanta Braves at Cleveland Indians (-104, 9 ½)

The visiting Braves bring the better starter to the hill today, but bettors should ask how long John Smoltz will go in his first start in 10 days. He skipped a start due to a sore right shoulder and has pitched only 9 1/3 innings over the last three weeks. Smoltz also hasn’t topped seven innings pitched since early April.

That virtually guarantees that the Braves bullpen will come into play this afternoon at Jacobs Field. Relief pitching had been a welcome Atlanta strength in the early parts of the season, but the Braves' recent sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins brought back memories of 2006

Cleveland, on the other hand, has gained confidence in its pen as the season has worn on. Indians relievers have a combined 1.54 ERA over the past week.

There’s also the fact that Cleveland is 21-9 at home, thanks to an average offensive output of 6.1 runs per game at Jacobs. No other MLB team can claim as potent a home-field punch.

                              Pick: Indians -104

Detroit Tigers at Philadelphia Phillies (-104, 10 ½)

Tigers starter Andrew Miller is a fan of his opponent today, but when it comes to the "Wow!" factor from the mound, Miller’s got it in spades while Philadelphia’s Jamie Moyer is more reliant on savvy over stuff.

"Like I used to say about Doc Gooden, it's pretty easy to be poised when you've got that kind of talent," an impressed Detroit manager Jim Leyland told local reporters about Miller.

Moyer has strong career numbers against the Tigers (10-7 W-L, 3.08 ERA), but considering how long as he’s been around, it’s dangerous from a betting perspective to read too much into career stats. Of more importance is Moyer’s recent form, which has been poor.

"I didn't throw the ball well at all. I stunk," he told the Phillies' team website after allowing six runs in less than four innings of work in a 17-5 loss to the Kansas City Royals in his last start. "I made a lot of mistakes in the middle of the plate, got behind hitters, walked too many people. I didn't help the cause at all."

If Moyer’s giving that up to the Royals then he might be in trouble against the Tigers, MLB’s hottest offense.

                              Pick: Tigers -104

Chicago White Sox at Pittsburgh Pirates (+125, 8 ½)

It’s hard to believe that the White Sox won the World Series as recently as 2005. The relatively recent memories of ChiSox players dousing each other with champagne, however, obscures how lost at the plate Ozzie Guillen’s boys are.

How bad is Chicago’s offense? So bad that we’re fading them against the Pirates’ John Van Benschoten, making his first MLB pitching appearance since 2004. Van Benschoten missed the last two seasons with a serious shoulder injury and couldn’t be happier to be back in the bigs.

"I've never been happier for any player I've had than I am today," his agent Joe Bick told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "People can't fathom what it's like for an athlete to be out for that period of time, to wonder if you're going to recover, to think, 'Can I ever be what I'm supposed to be?'"

Maybe there’s some sentimentality creeping into the pick. Hold the phone: the White Sox have an MLB-worst .647 OPS away from home? And they’re hitting only .226 over their last 10 games? Scratch that, there’s no sentimentality with this pick, we're just seeing potential value due to an overrated team on the road.

                              Pick: Pirates +125
