  • Nobody asked me, but............................

    1) I get tired of hearing the talking heads on TV and radio saying that the Yankees cannot catch the Sox, that their only hope is for the Wild Card? Uh, come again? With 98 and 97 games left for the two division rivals, and it is June 15th, they are separated by 7.5 games.

I should say I am not a fan of either team, but with Yanks on 10-game win streak, and Boston off of two losses to Colorado at Fenway, by a cumulative score of 19-3, I think it would be insane, and irrational, at best, to award the division crown to Red Sox nation in mid-June.

    2) Why isn't Guy V Lewis in the Basketball Hall of Fame? He took 5 teams to the Final Four, placed 3 players on the NBA's "50 Greatest of All-Time Team" ( only Dean Smith can make the same claim), and helped put cbb on the sports map by hosting top-ranked UCLa and Lew Alcindor in the Astrodome in 1968 before 52,000 + fans. Yes , I know he blew the '83 title game v Valvano & Co, but should that exclude him from the overdue recognition for his contributions to the sport? Anyone who saw Olajuwon play as a freshman can attest that Lewis was a fine teacher.

    3) It drives me absolutely crazy when sports bettors cry "fix" everytime their bet loses on a late shot, foul, turnover, or misssed shot, whatever. Has it ever occurred to these delusional degenerates that maybe, just maybe these linesmakers who make their living at setting a line on every game on the board, are actually very good at what they do? And how much collusion would it take for these players, coaches, and officials to make or miss shots, which is hard enough to do w/o the interference? And how much money would it take to coerce guys making 5-10 mil per to take a dive? Puh-leeze. And my favorite is the amount of credit these losing bettors give these players for being star mathematicians, not to mention being able to calculate 2H #s and totals, especially given that long 15-minute halftime that takes a couple of minutes to establish the #, then a frenzied negotiating period with the "fixers."

    =============================
I hope nobody minds, but I like to toss out random sports-related topics, specifically on silly nonsensical things that get under my skin. More tomorrow.

Regarding #1 they have to talk about something in order for viewers to view in

Regarding #3 it doesn't happen as often as people think a fix I mean.

#3 -- The other point I forgot to make is that for every losing side, there is a winning side opposite, and while human nature points us to remember when the ball bounces against us, sometimes the break works in our favor. And for those who really think so many of these games are rigged, why in the world wopuld you continue to wager on them?

It was well put and laid out......Also can put some peoples time to reading debatable things on Sports, and allowing less time to question a Cappers Picks and Record keeping....

#1 Let's do some simple math here. Yanks have 98 games left, Sox 97.

Is Yankees(33-31) 60-38 out of the question? Probably pretty close to the actual closing kick. So if Boston(41-24) goes 52-45, that would leave them tied at 93-69.

If you held a gun to my head and forced me to pick a div winner, I would take Boston. But the idea that the race is over is A-B-S-U-R-D.

Yankees are unstoppable. Finally playing like they should have been. I haven't heard any of the broadcasters saying that this week. In fact, you would think the race was dead even right now....

                As for #3...I agree!!!!

You should have your on show on ESPN, like the one where they throw out certain topics and debate them for about a min per person....

I actually heard some goofball on ESPN ( I think it was Steve Phillips, but not positive) on Wednesday. I am just glad my Astros didn't concede the race in '05, when on this date they were 12 games under .500. As most of you know, they turned it on to make the playoffs as a WC, and eventually made it to the World Series.

Main point is, it is ludicrous to pronounce any race over in June. I think Milwaukee thought the Central was won in May, yet they are on a horrible run, struggling to hang on to the lead in MLBs softest division.

                    It's a 162 game marathon, not a 60-game sprint.

I LOVE to debate sports. Other topics too, but not in this forum.

Good thing I am always right! LOL

Nobody commented on #2 yet. Its OK, you can't hurt my feelings. I just want someone to explain how John Chaney deserves to be in ( he is) and Lewis not.
The 74-year-old Chaney guided Temple to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances, including five NCAA regional finals -- where he went 0-5 and never made the Final Four. He was twice named national coach of the year and entered the Hall of Fame in 2001.

                          Grandpa:

As always, your points are well taken and thought out. I am not a Yankees fan (or Bosox for that matter); however, you can never call them out. They are too loaded with too much money. I think the race will be interesting down the wire. Boston should be getting their act together as they have lost 7 games in their lead over 2 or 3 weeks.

I can't comment on number 2 as I am not well versed enough but you make some interesting points. It was a little before my time, sorry to say.

Number three is so damn true. I know I have spilled the beans at time due to frustration, but I concur about stating it as a fix. In reality, I do believe it occurs but not as much as people think, especially now with the internet age. The linesmakers are getting sharper and the information is spreading faster.

Thanks for the great post as it created some thought in my little brain. Sorry about your bad beat the other, I felt your pain when we talked. But on the flip side, great job as just chalking it up to just another bad beat rather than a fix!

I did hear Phillips make those comments now that I think about it. He likes to stir the pot and throw some wild stuff out there. I agree with ya...it's never over until Dimer sings!

As for Guy Lewis, I just don't think there are enough people here than know enough about him to give you a good debate or opinion....

I think that is the problem. If he coached in the East, he would have been in already. I think he gets in eventually, hopefully while still alive.

                              Some more Lewis info:

His résumé is one of the most impressive in all of basketball history. 592 wins. Five Final Fours. One lay-up away from the 1983 NCAA Championship.

He coached 15 All-Americans, 29 NBA players, and three of the NBA's 50 all-time greatest. He had 27 consecutive winning seasons. He re-invented the way championship basketball was played in the NCAA.

Oh yeah, and he was the first coach in the South to, gasp, integrate his team

The man did as much for college basketball as peach baskets did in the 1890s. He is a god in the sport, but the sport is not intelligent enough to recognize him for who he is.

As if his on-court achievements were not enough, he single-handedly integrated a sport that saw no signs of easing the racial tensions in the South. In 1964, he went into the swamps of Louisiana and came back with two men named Elvin Hayes and Don Cheaney.

He literally put his job on the line for two reasons: to bring in better talent and, more importantly, to challenge the idea that white is better. The Big E went on to score 27,000 points in the NBA after he tore apart Lew Alcindor in "The Game of the Century."

In the late 1960s he approached John Wooden, the king of all of college basketball, about a UH-UCLA series that would put college basketball on the map. In the Dome. In front of 50,000-plus fans. Wooden laughed. The NCAA laughed.

Well, on Monday, Jan. 20, 1968, Lewis coached his team past UCLA and Wooden on national television. Oh yeah, college basketball on national TV: That was his idea too.

People watched the game and loved sports on Mondays. In fact, Monday Night Football got its start because of this Guy in Houston who didn't know a thing. Guy's idea was a gem for yet another reason: Playing in huge arenas made the NCAA serious cash.

When all interested parties agreed to play the UH-UCLA games, they thought the Astrodome idea was a joke. How could they fill a stadium meant for football? It would be impossible, they thought. But 52,693 showed up for this little pick-up game, and they saw Guy V. Lewis outcoach and UH outplay UCLA. And they all went home happy - except for those UCLA people.
