    Baseball Today - June 4

    SCOREBOARD Monday, June 4

Minnesota at L.A. Angels (10:05 p.m. EDT). Boof Bonser and Jered Weaver square off.

    STARS Sunday

-Vladimir Guerrero, Angels, hit a game-winning, two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift the Los Angeles Angels over Baltimore 4-3.

-Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard, Phillies. Victorino hit a game-ending homer in the ninth inning and Ryan Howard's three-run shot helped Philadelphia beat San Francisco 9-8.

-Alex Rodriguez, Yankees, hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth inning to lead New York past Boston 6-5.

-Garrett Atkins, Rockies, homered and singled in the winning run in the 10th inning to help Colorado rally past the Cincinnati Reds 10-9.

-Albert Pujols, Cardinals, homered twice, including a two-run shot in the 10th inning of St. Louis' 8-6 victory over Houston.

-Josh Bard, Padres, homered and drove in a career-high four runs in a 7-3 win over Washington.

    LATE GAME HEROICS

Shane Victorino hit a game-ending homer in the ninth inning in the Philadelphia Phillies' 9-8 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. ... Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Chris Ray, and the Los Angeles Angels pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. ... Garrett Atkins homered and singled in the winning run in the 10th inning to help the Colorado Rockies rally past the Cincinnati Reds 10-9. ... Alex Rodriguez's solo home run off star closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning gave New York a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

    WINDY CITY BLOWHARDS

Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella was suspended indefinitely and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball on Sunday for his dirt-kicking, hat-tossing tirade against an umpire that got him tossed in the eighth inning of Saturday's 5-3 loss to Atlanta. MLB said Piniella made contact with umpire Mark Wegner during the outburst - which Piniella denied - over Chicago's Angel Pagan being called out trying to steal third base. The Cubs defeated the Braves 10-1 Sunday in Piniella's absence. ... White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was ejected in the third inning of his team's 4-3 loss to Toronto. Guillen was ejected as he continued yelling on his way back to the dugout after arguing that the Blue Jays' Lyle Overbay was swinging at a pitch that hit him and should not have been awarded first base.

    SNAPPED

Brad Penny hadn't allowed a homer in 71 innings dating to Sept. 2006 before surrendering one to Adam LaRoche in the second inning of Los Angeles' 5-4 victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday.

    SWEEPING

Milwaukee won its first series in nearly a month with a 3-0 victory over Florida on Sunday. The Brewers' last sweep was May 7-9 against Washington.

    SPEAKING

''Pretty ironic, isn't it? In the dugout, Wes Helms was saying it would be something if I won the game on the day my bobblehead was given out. It's funny how it happened. I got a good pitch and drove it out.'' - Shane Victorino, who hit a game-ending homer in the ninth inning of the Phillies' 9-8 win over the Giants on Sunday. The crowd of 39,293 received a hula figurine of Victorino, who was born in Hawaii.

    SEASONS June 4

1940 - The Pirates beat the Boston Bees 14-2 in the first night game at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field.

1940 - The St. Louis Cardinals play their first night game at Sportsman's Park, beating the Brooklyn Dodgers 10-1.

1951 - Pittsburgh's Gus Bell hit for the cycle to lead the Pirates to a 12-4 victory over the Phillies at Philadelphia.

1964 - Sandy Koufax pitched his third no-hitter, striking out 12, as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Phillies 3-0 in Philadelphia.

1968 - Don Drysdale of the Dodgers blanked the Pirates 5-0 for his sixth straight shutout en route to a record 58 2-3 scoreless innings.

1974 - The game between the Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium was forfeited to Texas. Umpire Nestor Chylak had problems with the fans throughout the evening - primarily because it was 10-cent beer night. They got out of control when the Tribe tied the score 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth.

1990 - Ramon Martinez struck out 18 and pitched a three-hitter as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 6-0.

1996 - Pamela Davis pitched one inning of scoreless relief and got the win in a minor league exhibition game. She is believed to be the first woman to pitch for a major league farm club under the current structure of the minor league system. Davis, a 21-year-old right-hander, pitched for the Jacksonville Suns, a Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, against the Australian Olympic team.

2000 - Tampa Bay's Esteban Yan became the 77th major leaguer to homer in his first at-bat. Yan was the fourth American League pitcher to do so and the first since California's Don Rose in 1972, the year before the DH rule took the bat out of AL pitchers' hands.

2005 - Rafael Palmeiro and Melvin Mora each hit grand slams to help Baltimore rally for a 14-7 win over Detroit.

    Today's birthdays: Cla Meredith, 24; J.C. Romero, 31; Darin Erstad, 33.

      Monday, June 4

Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics

On the back of a series loss to their arch-rival Yankees on Sunday, the Red Sox boarded a plane headed west to take on the Oakland Athletics' ace Danny Haren on Monday night.

Between traveling and long innings against the Yanks, fatigue has to be a factor for the Sox as they send Julian Taverez to the mound to open the four-game series. Taverez has been solid in May going 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in five outings but in his last start he surrendered a 3-0 lead by giving up four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Oakland’s starter Haren is the American League ERA leader and has won his past six decisions after starting the year 0-2. He is now unbeaten in 10 starts and held the Rangers to a run on four hits over eight innings.

Facing the team with the best record in baseball will certainly be a tougher task for Haren, but with the possibility of a weekend hangover for the Red Sox and one of their weaker starters on the mound he has a good chance of extending his streak.

      Pick: Oakland -146

      Baltimore Orioles at Seattle Mariners

Felix Hernandez has struggled to find form since returning from the DL. He's 1-2 with a 6.30 ERA in four starts since returning on May 15, but went 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA in three starts before straining his right forearm.

Hernandez is 2-1 with a lofty 5.82 ERA in three starts against the Orioles, but Baltimore's lineup scored just nine total runs while losing the final three of a four-game weekend series versus the Los Angeles Angels.

The Seattle pitcher will be getting stronger with every start and faces Orioles starter Erik Bedard, who was winless in seven starts before dropping Kansas City last week.

      Pick: Seattle –126

Minnesota Twins at Los Angeles Angels

After a disappointing series loss to Oakland, the Minnesota Twins send Boof Bonser to the mound for the first of three games against Los Angeles.

In his last four starts, Bonser is 4-0 with a 3.04 ERA and pitched 6 2/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, allowing only two runs in a 9-2 win.

Bonser will face the Angels' Jered Weaver, who is 4-3 with a 4.25 ERA and has started to look shaky in recent games. Weaver gave up nine hits and walked three in just under five innings while giving up five runs in his last outing against Seattle. It could have been even worse if not for some excellent fielding behind him.

      Pick: Minnesota +146

        Hockey Today - June 4

        SCOREBOARD Monday, June 4

Anaheim at Ottawa (8 p.m. EST). The Senators can get even with the Ducks with a win at home in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals.

        BAD BEHAVIOR

Anaheim defenseman Chris Pronger became the third player to be suspended in the finals, receiving a one-game suspension Sunday by NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell. Campbell had previously suspended Detroit defensmen Jiri Fischer one game in 2002 for cross-checking Carolina forward Tommy Westlund and Calgary forward Ville Nieminen one game for a hit from behind on Tampa Bay center Vincent Lecavalier in 2004. Pronger is also the third to be banished twice in one playoff year.

        SEARCH COMMITTEE

The NHL Players' Association named Dallas center Eric Lindros, Edmonton forward Shawn Horcoff and Washington defensman Bryan Muir to an advisory committee to begin the search for a leader to replace the fired Ted Saskin. The players will meet with heads of unions and corporations for ideas on the qualities they should look for in candidates for the union's top job and then present their findings at an executive board meeting in June.

        SPEAKING

''You can't get this far unless you're able to take a game - whether it's a win or a loss - and just shove it aside. We'll be OK.'' - Anaheim defenseman Sean O'Donnell. The Ducks, who have yet to lose consecutive games this postseason, look to rebound following a 5-3 loss to Ottawa in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals Saturday night. Anaheim holds a 2-1 series lead.

          Anaheim at Ottawa
The Senators rode the momentum of the home crowd to get back into the series with a 5-3 win in Game Three. The moribund offense finally came to life as Ottawa outshot the Ducks (29-22) and outhustled them (16 takeaways to 7), while Anaheim once again racked up more penalty minutes (24-16). The one that really hurts was Chris Pronger's elbow to the head of Dean McAmmond, which will cause Pronger to miss tonight's Game Four with a suspension. Without Pronger, the Ducks have been a very ordinary team this year (7-7-3). With another vocal crowd cheering them on, the Sens should tie this one up tonight according to Dunkel, which has Ottawa favored straight up by 1. Here are all of today's games.
