    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs (1:05 PM ET)
Atlanta's Chuck James picked up a victory in his only career start against Chicago, going seven innings and allowing two earned runs and six hits. EDGE: BRAVES
James has been consistent on the road with a 4-2 record and 4.15 ERA in seven starts. He led the Braves to a 2-1 road victory over Milwaukee last time out, allowing just one run over six innings. EDGE: BRAVES
Cubs starter Rich Hill has dominated the Braves in his early career, posting a perfect 2-0 record and 0.66 ERA in two starts. BIG EDGE: CUBS
Chicago has lost six of Hill's last seven starts and have supplied its southpaw starter just 13 runs over that span. EDGE: BRAVES & UNDER

Chicago White Sox at Toronto Blue Jays (1:07 PM ET)
Chicago's Jose Contreras is 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA in nine career outings (four starts) against Toronto. EDGE: WHITE SOX
Contreras enters Saturday's game off one of his worst outings of the season, allowing seven runs and a season-high 10 hits in a 10-4 road loss to Minnesota. EDGE: BLUE JAYS
Blue Jays starter Dustin McGowan has been rocked in two career outings against the White Sox, surrendering eight runs and eight hits in just 7 2/3 innings while issuing seven free passes. EDGE: WHITE SOX & OVER

Arizona Diamondbacks at New York Mets (1:10 PM ET)
Diamondbacks right-hander Livan Hernandez tallied his fourth win of the season against the Mets on May 6, picking up a 3-1 victory at Chase Field. He allowed just a single run over seven solid innings of work. EDGE: D-BACKS
Hernandez has been up and down on the road this season with a 2-2 record and 4.75 ERA. He's fallen into a pattern of throwing one quality outing and then coming back with a bad one. Since he allowed just one run in his last road start, experts anticipate a rocky outing this afternoon. EDGE: METS & OVER
New York's Jorge Sosa is 1-3 with a 5.79 ERA in seven career outings (four starts) against Arizona. He won his last start against the Diamondbacks on May 5, allowing two runs and four hits in a 6-2 road victory. SLIGHT EDGE: D-BACKS
Sosa is a perfect 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in two starts this season at Shea Stadium. EDGE: METS

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (FOX | 3:55 PM ET)
New York starter Mike Mussina was rocked for a season-high seven runs and 10 hits in a 7-3 loss to Boston two starts back. He's 19-15 with a 3.58 ERA in 51 career starts against the Red Sox. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES
The Yankees have lost three straight games with Mussina on the mound and five out of seven on the season. EDGE: RED SOX
Boston's Curt Schilling surrendered a season-high 12 hits in his last start against New York on May 23, as the Yankees picked up an 8-3 victory over the veteran right-hander. EDGE: YANKEES
Schilling is a perfect 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA in six home starts this season. He struck out a season-high 10 batters against a potent Indians lineup in his last start at Fenway. EDGE: RED SOX

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians (7:05 PM ET)
Detroit's Chad Durbin is 3-3 with a 8.07 ERA in six career starts against Cleveland. The right-hander has allowed 29 runs and 41 hits in just 32 1/3 innings against the Tribe. BIG EDGE: INDIANS & OVER
Durbin is a solid 3-1 with a 3.89 ERA in seven road starts this season. EDGE: TIGERS
Indians left-hander Cliff Lee is 3-5 with a 4.92 ERA in 13 career starts against the Tigers. EDGE: TIGERS
Lee has lost two straight starts, allowing 11 runs and 16 hits in just 9 1/3 innings. EDGE: TIGERS & OVER

San Francisco Giants at Philadelphia Phillies (7:05 PM ET)
San Francisco starter Noah Lowry is 2-1 with a 4.94 ERA during his career against Philadelphia. The left-hander led the Giants to a 9-4 victory over the Phillies on May 5, throwing 6 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out a season-high eight batters. EDGE: GIANTS
Lowry is 1-3 with a 3.58 ERA in four starts away from San Francisco this season. The Giants have scored just five runs in thos four outings. EDGE: PHILLIES & UNDER
Philadelphia's Cole Hamels is 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA in five home starts this season. He's won consecutive starts at Citizen Bank Ball Park, mainly because he's fanned 18 batters in his last 15 innings there. EDGE: PHILLIES

Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels (9:05 PM ET)
Baltimore's Steve Trachsel is 2-1 with a 2.97 ERA in four career starts against Los Angeles. EDGE: ORIOLES
Trachsel enters Saturday's game with three consecutive victories, allowing just five runs over his last 20 2/3 innings. EDGE: ORIOLES & UNDER
Los Angeles starter Bartolo Colon is 8-5 with a 3.20 ERA in 16 career starts against Baltimore. EDGE: ANGELS
Plenty of questions are being asked about the health of Colon, since he commented about feeling discomfort in his triceps during his last start. He's been rocked for 14 earned runs and 21 hits over his last two starts. EDGE: ORIOLES & OVER

Minnesota Twins at Oakland Athletics (9:05 PM ET)
Minnesota right-hander Carlos Silva is 2-1 with a 3.35 ERA in six career starts against Oakland. EDGE: TWINS
Silva has been hit hard on the road in five starts, posting a 2-3 record and 6.18 ERA. He's lost his last two starts away from the Metrodome, allowing 12 runs and 16 hits in 10 1/3 innings. EDGE: A'S & OVER

#1 Detroit Pistons at #2 Cleveland Cavaliers
      Game 6 - Saturday, June 2nd, 8:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

Cavs star LeBron James has clearly has clearly taken his game to another level in the last three games of this series, capped by Thursday's monster 48-point performance in which he scored his team's last 25 points. Cleveland improved to 11-0 SU in the playoffs when James scores more than 20 points and is 0-4 when he scores 20 or less. It's hard to imagine him not scoring more than 20 points here at home, where he is averaging 26.3 per gmae in the playoffs. BIG EDGE: CAVS

Cleveland is just 1-5 in its last six games when scoring 85 points or less and has now won 15 straight when scoring more than 85. The key for the Cavs again will be to push the tempo in Game 6 and build on Game 5, when they finally broke through and outscored Detroit in the third quarter for the first time in the series. EDGE: CAVS & OVER

The Pistons were able to win at Cleveland in Game 6 a year ago in the second round and remain one of the best road teams in the NBA at 31-17 ATS. They are a veteran team that has been in similar situations before and certainly capable of extending this series to a seventh game for the second time in as many years. EDGE: PISTONS

Cleveland is 11-1 ATS in its last 11 against Central Division opponents.
Cleveland is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 games on Saturday.
Detroit is 15-5 ATS in its last 20 road games.
Underdog is 13-2 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
UNDER is 24-6 in the last 30 meetings.
UNDER is 7-2 in Cleveland's last 9 games.
UNDER is 7-3 in Detroit's last 10 road games.

      Head-to-Head Recaps

EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS (HOME team in CAPS)

      RESULTS

Cleveland leads 3-2 SU (5-0 ATS)
      UNDER 3-2

      5/31/07 - Game 5 - Cleveland 109, DETROIT 107 2 OT (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | OVER 172)

Summary: LeBron James simply could not have played any better for the Cavs down the stretch, scoring their last 25 points and 29 of their last 30 en route to a thrilling victory. James turned in one of the all-time great postseason performances and helped Cleveland rally back from a seven-point deficit in the last 3:15 of regulation to force overtime. He then scored all of his team's points both OT sessions, capped by the game-winning layup with three seconds left. The first quarter tied for the highest-scoring quarter in the series and kept pace through halftime before slowing down after the break. Still, this ended up being an easy OVER even without either OT.

      5/29/07 - Game 4 - CLEVELAND 91, Detroit 87 (ATS winner: Cleve -1.5 | OVER 172)

Summary: LeBron James put together another outstanding fourth quarter with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists to help the Cavs rebound from another poor third quarter and even the series. Cleveland has been outscored 87-58 in the third over the first four games but has held a scoring advantage in eight of the other quarters in the series. The Cavs led 50-43 at halftime to set the first OVER pace of this series and then a 46-point fourth quarter cashed it in. Cleveland also made 27-of-33 free throws, including 12-of-12 from rookie Daniel Gibson as part of his 21 points.

      5/27/07 - Game 3 - CLEVELAND 88, Detroit 82 (ATS winner: Cleve -4 | UNDER 173)

Summary: This time, LeBron James made sure he didn't have to be involved in a last-second shot, scoring 12 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter to put the Cavs into a more comfortable position down the stretch. James hit a 3-pointer with 2:43 left that put Cleveland up 84-76 and then hit a jumper with 16 seconds remaining to keep his team up four before Drew Gooden's two free throws capped the scoring.

      5/24/07 - Game 2 - DETROIT 79, Cleveland 76 (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | UNDER 174.5)

Summary: This game mirrored Game 1 all the way down to the final score. The only difference was that the Cavs exploded for a series-high 34 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 50-38 lead at halftime, and LeBron James took the potential game-winning shot in the final seconds but missed and was not fouled.

      5/20/07 - Game 1 - DETROIT 79, Cleveland 76 (ATS winner: Cleve +6.5 | UNDER 177)

Summary: Ugly is just one of many negative words one could use to describe this game - unless you appreciate defense. The Cavs shot just 37 percent from the field but outrebounded the Pistons 49-41 and forced 16 turnovers, including seven by Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups. That allowed Cleveland to stay in this game throughout, as the team managed to take 14 more shots than the home team. LeBron James had a chance to tie the game for the Cavs in the final seconds but instead chose to pass the ball to a wide-open Donyell Marshall, who missed what could have been the game-winning 3-pointer. Could have been is what everybody talked about afterwards and what Detroit backers felt should have been an easy cover.

      SCHEDULE

6/2/07 - Game 6 - Detroit Pistons at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (TNT | 8:30 PM ET)
6/4/07 - Game 7 - Cleveland Cavaliers at DETROIT PISTONS (TNT | 8 PM ET)

      REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Detroit wins 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS)
      UNDER 3-1

      4/8/07 - DETROIT 87, Cleveland 82 (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | UNDER 181)
      3/7/07 - Cleveland 101, DETROIT 97 (ATS winner: Cleve +5 | OVER 179)
      2/4/07 - Detroit 90, CLEVELAND 78 (ATS winner: Detroit +2.5 | UNDER 184)
      12/27/06 - Detroit 87, CLEVELAND 71 (ATS winner: Detroit +3 | UNDER 184)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: LeBron James scored a season-high 41 points in the third meeting at Detroit to lead Cleveland to its first win against the Pistons since Game 5 of their second-round series last May. That was the only win in the regular-season series for the Cavs, as Detroit won both meetings in Cleveland by an average of 14 points. That lack of a home-court edge along with the Pistons' dominance on the road - where they were an Eastern Conference-best 27-14 - could be the difference.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ice picks: Game 3 preview and pick

Anaheim Ducks at Ottawa Senators (-170, 5 1/2)

Home-ice advantage had better make a world of difference to the Senators.

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle made the most of his last-change privileges in Anaheim to keep his top checking unit of Samuel Pahlsson, Travis Moen and Rob Niedermayer glued to Ottawa’s sniper line. The end result was a disappearing act by Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley, and a couple of the most lopsided one-goal victories you’re going to see in any Stanley Cup final series.

Now the big question is whether Brian Murray will get anything out of his No. 1 line on even strength when he has the chance to keep it away from Pahlsson’s line. Truth is home ice would probably be a lot more of a factor for Ottawa if it weren’t for Chris Pronger, Scott Niedermayer and Francois Beauchemin.

Murray may be able to keep his superstars away from Carlyle’s checking line, but at least one of the Ducks’ top three defensemen is always on the ice, and Carlyle’s added a new wrinkle by pairing Pronger and Niedermayer together on occasion.

Anaheim is also sucking Ottawa into its kind of game already. The Senators can’t let Anaheim’s tough play and persistent forecheck get under their skin if they want to get back in the series. Mike Fisher flipped his lid near the end of the first period of Game 2 and the Ducks dominated from then on, holding the Senators to single-digit shots in all three periods. The Sens are a tougher team than in the past, but still can’t match Anaheim in this department. Nobody can, so playing angry isn’t going to get them anywhere.

Ottawa needs to start getting more pucks to the net immediately. You’re not going to put three or four behind Jean-Sebastien Giguere on most nights without at least 30 shots. Plus, Ray Emery is only going to keep the Sens in it for so long before the floodgates open, so Ottawa had better come out firing in Game 3.

Desperation and home ice are the main factors weighing in on the pricey -170 line oddsmakers have pegged on the Senators, but is it really worth it? Right now Ottawa looks hopelessly outclassed at even strength, which is heaping pressure on a pass-happy power play. If you’re going to bet the Sens, this is probably the spot despite the price. But a Ducks puckline wager makes more sense if you’re looking for a side and willing to stomach the -223 tag. Still, the under probably remains the best bet on the board.

                  Pick: under 5 ½ goals (-145)

Lady luck: Saturday's best WNBA bets

Phoenix Mercury at Connecticut Sun (Sun -2 1/2)

                    Don’t get Diana Taurasi mad.

After getting ejected for the first time in her career on Tuesday, she bounced back to lead the Mercury to a 97-85 upset over San Antonio on Thursday with 18 points in the second half.

Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter are combining for nearly 40 points a game and should give Connecticut all it can handle. The Sun needed overtime to snap a two-game slide on the road against the Chicago Sky on Thursday, but couldn’t cover the 7 ½ points. They’re now 1-3 against the number.

Phoenix and Connecticut have both played over in three of four games this season.

                    Pick: Phoenix

Detroit Shock at Houston Comets (Shock -5 1/2)

It’s not all bad for the winless Comets. At least they have Ashley Shields on their side.

Houston made Shields the first junior-college player to be picked in the first round of the entry draft and she’s proving she belongs, averaging about 20 points a night off the bench.

"Ashley has been thrown into the fire," Comets coach Karleen Thompson told reporters. "There are small things that she needs to work on — decision-making at certain times. It's going to come and she's going to get better.”

Shields is fitting in nicely, but she’ll need a lot of help to get Houston its first cover of the season against the unbeaten Shock.

                    Pick: Detroit

San Antonio Silver Stars at Seattle Storm (Storm -6 1/2)

Seattle hasn’t taken the court since dropping an 82-71 decision to San Antonio eight days ago as a 3 ½-point favorites. Now the Storm get a second crack at the Silver Stars.

"That can work in our favor, or it could work against it," Seattle coach Anne Donovan told reporters. "Hopefully, it works in our favor."

Lauren Jackson was just 4-for-15 from the floor and needed to hit 7-of-8 from the line to finish with 16 points, well down from her 23.3 season average, but she did grab 11 boards in the losing effort.

The Storm plan to tighten up defensively after San Antonio turned 14 steals and 19 turnovers into 29 points last Friday.

"The running team in that game was San Antonio, it wasn't Seattle," Donovan said. "We weren't focused in transition to get back and guard the ball and then filter out."

Eight days should be enough for Seattle to work the kinks out.

                    Pick: Seattle

                      Saturday, June 2

                      HOT

Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) – After a sub-par start to his season, Francis has really turned it on lately. He is 2-0 in his last three starts, allowing just three earned runs over those outings. His solid pitching has under bettors cashing in on his last five trips to the mound. He'll face the Cincinnati Reds tonight with books setting Colorado as a –168 favorite and the total at 9 ½.

Steve Trachsel (Baltimore Orioles) – The old veteran has baffled batters in his last three starts going 3-0 with a 2.18 ERA. In Trachsel’s last contest he threw a complete-game five-hitter while allowing just one earned run against the Kansas City Royals. He takes on the Los Angeles Angels tonight, a team he's 2-1 with a 2.97 ERA against in his career. Oddsmakers have the O’s listed as +142 underdogs.

Justin Germano (San Diego Padres) – Germano has emerged out of nowhere as a star for the Padres. In four starts this season he has yet to allow more than two earned runs in any of his outings. He is 3-0 with a remarkable 1.08 ERA. Books are starting to recognize his name, however, as he comes with a hefty –169 price tag against the Washington Nationals tonight.

                      COLD

Mike Mussina (New York Yankees) – To find the issues behind the Yanks' struggles look no further than Mussina. The veteran of the staff is in a major slump, losing two of his last three starts while allowing 12 combined runs in the two losses. He has yet to make it past the sixth inning in any of his outings this season. Surprisingly, as bad as he’s been, the under is 6-0 in his last six starts. New York is a +124 underdog in Boston tonight with the total set at 10 ½.

Chris Capuano (Milwaukee Brewers) – Capuano’s season has taken a nosedive. Since starting the year 5-0, he has dropped his last four games in ugly fashions. In those four games, he's allowed a total of 16 earned runs while averaging just 3 ½ strikeouts per game. Books don’t seem to care about his struggles as they have the Brewers listed as –162 favorites against the Florida Marlins tonight.

                          Florida at Milwaukee
Byung-Hyun Kim has paid immediate dividends for the Marlins since acquiring the journeyman in mid-May. Kim is coming off his best outing of the season as he pitched six shutout innings against the Cubs on Monday to run his record to 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA for Florida. Milwaukee's Chris Capuano has watched a spectacular start (5-0, 2.31 ERA in first seven starts) come crashing back to earth. In his last four outings, Capuano is 0-4 with a 7.08 ERA, while allowing opponents to hit a robust .345 against him. After dropping back-to-back games to the Brewers, Florida looks like a good underdog pick (+175) to get back into the win column today according to Dunkel, which has the Marlins favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Florida (+175). Here are all of today's games.

                              Detroit at Cleveland
LeBron James' performance in Game Five is one for the record books after he single-handedly carried the Cavaliers to a 109-107 double-overtime victory that put the defending Eastern Conference champs on the ropes. But this series has been too close to say its over with the average margin of victory through the first five games being a slim 3.6 points. And Detroit was in the exact same position last year coming off a two-point loss in Game Five and facing a close-out game in Cleveland. The Pistons responded with a two-point win of their own (84-82) and went on to win the series in seven. Detroit has looked more comfortable on the road all season with a 31-17 record straight up and 31-16-1 record against the spread (compared to 19-29-0 ATS at home). And their best game of the postseason came in Chicago when the Pistons were able to snuff out the Bulls attempt to get back into the series with a 95-85 win in Game Six.
