    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    SCOREBOARD

    Tuesday, May 29

Florida at Chicago (8:05 p.m. EDT). Dontrelle Willis squares off against Jason Marquis.

    STARS

    Monday

-Kyle Lohse, Reds, threw a complete-game six-hitter and Cincinnati topped Pittsburgh 4-0.

-Byung-Hyun Kim, Marlins, pitched six scoreless innings in Florida's 5-3 win over Chicago.

-Curt Schilling, Red Sox, gave up one run and struck out 10 in Boston's 5-3 defeat of Cleveland.

-Elijah Dukes, Devil Rays, hit a game-winning, two-run single to push Tampa Bay past Detroit 6-5.

-Adrian Beltre, Mariners, tied a franchise record with four extra-base hits, including two homers, and Seattle pounded the Los Angeles Angels 12-5.

    ROCKET RELAUNCH

Roger Clemens appears ready to rejoin the New York Yankees' starting rotation. Clemens pitched six shutout innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a 2-0 victory over Toledo on Monday. He struck out six and gave up two hits and two walks and is on track to pitch for the Yankees this weekend at Boston or next week at Chicago.

    HOT SOX

At 35-15, Boston leads the AL East by 11 1/2 games over second-place Baltimore. The Red Sox have never had a bigger lead through 50 games. A 5-3 win over AL Central-leading Cleveland on Monday stretched their lead over the rival New York Yankees to 13 1/2-games. The Yankees were defeated 7-2 by Toronto.

    HR THE HARD WAY

Kevin Youkilis hit a stand-up inside-the-park homer to help Boston defeat Cleveland 5-3 on Monday. Youkilis hit a high fly ball to the deepest part of Fenway Park that hit the side of the Red Sox bullpen before center fielder Grady Sizemore could get to it. The ball kicked toward left field, where right fielder Trot Nixon ran it down. Nixon - who happened to hit the last inside-the-park homer for the Red Sox, on July 15, 2005, against the Yankees - made a throw to the cutoff man but Youkilis was already coasting across the plate.

    STREAKS

Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 21 games in Seattle's 12-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. ... Kevin Youkilis extended his hitting streak to 20 games in Boston's 5-3 win over Cleveland. ... The Rockies beat St. Louis 6-2 Monday to win their sixth straight game for the first time since May 2002.

    SNAPPED

Robinson Cano's hitting streak was stopped at 11 games in the Yankee's 7-2 loss to Toronto on Monday. ... Justin Morneau had his 10-game hitting streak snapped in Minnesota's 10-4 win over the White Sox. ... Cincinnati snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over Pittsburgh. Reds starter Kyle Lohse stopped a personal six-game skid with the victory.

    SPEAKING

''In the end, all the guys in here believe that we can make the playoffs. When we start walking around with our heads down, that's when we need to start worrying. We know we have an uphill climb, there's no question about it, but there's no quit. We're going to battle. Hopefully, in the end, there's going to be a nice prize.'' - Yankees center fielder Johnny Damon, on his team falling 13 1/2 games back of AL East-leading Boston after a 7-2 loss to Toronto on Monday. New York is also 7 1/2 games back of Detroit, the AL wild-card leader.

    SEASONS

    May 29

1916 - Christy Mathewson defeated the Boston Braves 3-0 for the New York Giants' 17th consecutive road win.

1922 - The Supreme Court ruled organized baseball was primarily a sport and not a business, and therefore not subject to antitrust laws and interstate commerce regulations.

1956 - Dale Long went hitless for the Pirates, ending his major league record streak of home runs in eight consecutive games. The Brooklyn Dodgers beat Pittsburgh, 10-1. 1965 - Philadelphia's Richie Allen hit a 529-foot home run over the roof of Connie Mack Stadium off Chicago's Larry Jackson in the Phillies' 4-2 victory.

1976 - Houston's Joe Niekro was the winning pitcher and hit a home run off his brother, Phil Niekro. The Astros beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1. It was the only home run hit by Joe in his 22-year major league career.

1990 - Oakland's Rickey Henderson broke Ty Cobb's 62-year-old American League stolen base record, but the Toronto Blue Jays still beat the Athletics 2-1. Henderson's 893rd steal came in the sixth inning.

2000 - Oakland second baseman Randy Velarde turned the 10th unassisted triple play in regular-season history during a 4-1 loss to the New York Yankees. With runners on first and second in motion, Shane Spencer hit a line drive to Velarde who caught the ball, tagged out Jorge Posada (running from first) and stepped on second to beat Tino Martinez.

2002 - Roger Clemens recorded the 100th double-digit strikeout game of his career, fanning 11 in seven innings against Chicago. Nolan Ryan (215) and Randy Johnson (175) are the others to have 100 double-digit strikeout games.

    Today's birthdays:
John Rheinecker, 28; Jerry Hairston, Jr. 31; Trever Miller, 34.

      Tuesday, May 29

Detroit at Cleveland (8 p.m. EDT). The Cavaliers look to pull even with the Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals.

      STAR

      Monday

      - Tim Duncan, Spurs, had 19 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots as San Antonio took a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference finals with a 91-79 victory over Utah.

      STRONG IN DEFEAT

Utah point guard Deron Williams had 27 points, 10 assists and three steals playing with a stomach flu, but the Jazz fell one game away from elimination with a 91-79 Game 4 loss to San Antonio on Monday night in the Western Conference finals.

      SCORING

      IN DOUBT

Cleveland's starting point guard Larry Hughes is listed as doubtful for Game 4 against Detroit on Tuesday night after spraining his left foot in the first quarter of the Cavaliers' 88-82 win on Sunday. Hughes' injury has been diagnosed as a strain of the left foot plantar fascia.

      SNAPPED

San Antonio got its first playoff win in Salt Lake City, 91-79 Monday night to take a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference finals. The Spurs had been 0-9 counting losses in 1994, '96, '98 and Saturday night. They also were 0-3 in Salt Lake City this season.

      SPEAKING

''We just couldn't keep them off the free-throw line. I don't want to talk about those (technical fouls) because all that does is give me more trouble.'' - Utah coach Jerry Sloan after being ejected with two technicals from Monday night's 91-79 loss to San Antonio in the Western Conference finals.
