    Six-pack for Tuesday

I am posting the American League East standings, because they are so shocking.
The season will be one-third over in a week; it isn't that early in the season anymore.......

    Team__________________ W-L____ Games Behind
    Boston Red Sox_____________ 35-15______ ---
    Baltimore Orioles____________ 24-27_____ 11.5
    Toronto Blue Jays___________ 23-27_____ 12
Tampa Bay Devil Rays________ 21-28_____ 13.5
    Bronx Bombers ______________21-28_____ 13.5

    A statistic worth considering:
There are 16 teams in the National League. Eight of those 16 teams' entire payrolls are less than the combined salaries of Jeter, Giambi and Rodriguez.

Tuesday's list of 13: Wrapping up a long sports weekend

      13) A's are giving away 15,000 Milton Bradley bobbleheads Tuesday; if the dolls are anything like Bradley, their legs will fall off on Thursday. The guy never plays.

      12) When Kyle Petty finished third in the NASCAR race on Sunday night, it was his first top five finish in over ten years. Thats a long time without a finish that good.

      11) Someone explain to me why six NL teams had Memorial Day off, while the Blue Jays were home? Memorial Day is a national holiday, for Pete's sake. Let teams have Tuesday off.

      10) Appropriate to Memorial Day, 24 Hall of Famers served in World War I, 35 served in the second World War.

      9) Bartolo Colon has been pounded his last two starts; if he isn't healthy, Angels are vulnerable. Seattle is the challenger most likely to overtake the Angels, if King Felix is healthy.

      8) Mariners scored 50 runs in their last five games.

      7) Rangers are 13-2 when they score 7+ runs, 5-30 otherwise.

      6) Texas' starting pitchers had a 6.22 ERA through Sunday; it would be the third-worst ERA for a starting staff since 1957.

      5) Rangers' bench coach Art Howe was once starting QB for the Wyoming Cowboys.

      4) Example #4,123 why it has to be more fun, if less profitable, to play in a smaller market. Eric Chavez' hitting has been poor; he was under .230, but he still got cheered every time he came up to bat Monday, and he responded with a three-run homer. In a bigger city, they would have been booing him for weeks.

After Monday's game, Chavez said when pitcher threw pitch that he hit for the 3-run homer, he heard the catcher say "Oh, no" as the ball was coming in, it was that fat a pitch.

      3) Another reason why handicapping baseball is so difficult; Kyle Lohse threw a 105-pitch complete game shutout against Pirates Monday; he was 0-6, 9.75 in his previous six starts.

      2) Steve Trachsel got a complete game win Monday, without striking out a batter. He got 17 ground ball outs, 10 in the air.

      1) If you had guessed that Chad Gaudin would be second in AL in ERA among starting pitchers, I want you to go to Las Vegas with me, and soon.

Cleveland has led all three games at half ; they scored 26 points in second half Thursday, but hung on for Game 3 win, can even series here. Sub guard Gibson played 29+ minutes Saturday, as Hughes played only 22+, making both shots he took. The home side is now 6-0 in this round of playoffs. Cavaliers' percentage from floor in this series went up from 37.2% to 40% to 49.3%, so maybe they're getting hang or attack Detroit's defense.

#1 Detroit Pistons at #2 Cleveland Cavaliers
              Game 4 - Tuesday, May 29th, 8 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups continues to be a major disappointment in this series, as he has totaled 17 turnovers and 14 assists through the first three games. Billups is averaging just 13 points per game in this series, which is just above his career average of 12.1 points against the Cavs. He was much more aggressive in Game 4 but made just 4-of-14 shots from the field, including only 2-of-8 from 3-point range while still turning the ball over five times. Insiders believe Cleveland owns this matchup and should continue to benefit. EDGE: CAVS
Cleveland star LeBron James clearly felt re-energized at home in Game 3, putting together his best performance of the series with 32 points, nine rebounds and nine assists - including an emphatic dunk on Detroit's Rasheed Wallace. Whether or not that carries over into Game 4 remains to be seen, but James made a serious statement back at home that it will be difficult for any team to beat the Cavs on their home court. Cleveland is 5-1 SU at home in the playoffs but just 3-3 ATS. SLIGHT EDGE: CAVS
The Cavs are just 1-5 in their last six games when scoring 85 points or less and have now won their last 13 games when scoring more than 85. The key for Cleveland in Game 4 is to again push the tempo and play better in the second half, when the Pistons have been known to make their move. EDGE: CAVS & OVER
Cleveland is 9-1 ATS in its last 10 against Central Division opponents.
Detroit is 20-8 ATS in its last 28 road games.
Underdog is 11-2 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
UNDER is 24-4 in the last 28 meetings.

              Head-to-Head Recaps

EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS (HOME team in CAPS)

              RESULTS

Pistons lead 2-1 SU (0-3 ATS)
              UNDER 3-0

              5/27/07 - Game 3 - CLEVELAND 88, Detroit 82 (ATS winner: Cleve -4 | UNDER 173)
              Recap | Boxscore
Summary: This time, LeBron James made sure he didn't have to be involved in a last-second shot, scoring 12 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter to put the Cavs into a more comfortable position down the stretch. James hit a 3-pointer with 2:43 left that put Cleveland up 84-76 and then hit a jumper with 16 seconds remaining to keep his team up four before Drew Gooden's two free throws capped the scoring.

              5/24/07 - Game 2 - DETROIT 79, Cleveland 76 (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | UNDER 174.5)
              Recap | Boxscore
Summary: This game mirrored Game 1 all the way down to the final score. The only difference was that the Cavs exploded for a series-high 34 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 50-38 lead at halftime, and LeBron James took the potential game-winning shot in the final seconds but missed and was not fouled.

              5/20/07 - Game 1 - DETROIT 79, Cleveland 76 (ATS winner: Cleve +6.5 | UNDER 177)
              Recap | Boxscore
Summary: Ugly is just one of many negative words one could use to describe this game - unless you appreciate defense. The Cavs shot just 37 percent from the field but outrebounded the Pistons 49-41 and forced 16 turnovers, including seven by Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups. That allowed Cleveland to stay in this game throughout, as the team managed to take 14 more shots than the home team. LeBron James had a chance to tie the game for the Cavs in the final seconds but instead chose to pass the ball to a wide-open Donyell Marshall, who missed what could have been the game-winning 3-pointer. Could have been is what everybody talked about afterwards and what Detroit backers felt should have been an easy cover.

              SCHEDULE

5/29/07 - Game 4 - Detroit Pistons at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (TNT | 8 PM ET)
5/31/07 - Game 5 - Cleveland Cavaliers at DETROIT PISTONS (TNT | 8 PM ET)
6/2/07 - Game 6 - Detroit Pistons at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (TNT | 8:30 PM ET)
6/4/07 - Game 7 - Cleveland Cavaliers at DETROIT PISTONS (TNT | 8 PM ET)

              REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Detroit wins 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS)
              UNDER 3-1

              4/8/07 - DETROIT 87, Cleveland 82 (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | UNDER 181)
              3/7/07 - Cleveland 101, DETROIT 97 (ATS winner: Cleve +5 | OVER 179)
              2/4/07 - Detroit 90, CLEVELAND 78 (ATS winner: Detroit +2.5 | UNDER 184)
              12/27/06 - Detroit 87, CLEVELAND 71 (ATS winner: Detroit +3 | UNDER 184)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: LeBron James scored a season-high 41 points in the third meeting at Detroit to lead Cleveland to its first win against the Pistons since Game 5 of their second-round series last May. That was the only win in the regular-season series for the Cavs, as Detroit won both meetings in Cleveland by an average of 14 points. That lack of a home-court edge along with the Pistons' dominance on the road - where they were an Eastern Conference-best 27-14 - could be the difference.

                    LA Dodgers at Washington
Despite injuries to much of the starting rotation, the Nationals have continued to get solid pitching. What has improved lately has been the offense. The Nats return home after a 5-2 road trip that saw Washington hit .310 and average 7 runs per contest against St. Louis and Cincinnati. Overall Washington has now won 12 of its last 17 and looks like a dangerous underdog (+165) coming into tonight's game with the Dodgers according to Dunkel, which has the Nats favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                      NBA
                      Dunkel Index

                      Detroit at Cleveland
All three games in the series have come down to the final minute and have been decided by what LeBron James has done or hasn't done. In Detroit, James failed on back-to-back last second opportunities, but came through impressively on his home court with a 32-point, 9-rebound and 9-assist performance in the Game Three win (88-82). Meanwhile Detroit continues to help the Cavs out with a sputtering offense that is typified by Chauncey Billups erratic play (17 turnovers in the series thus far). Much will be made out of Larry Hughes' expected absence (foot injury), but he has not been much of a factor in the series (7.7 ppg, 0-3 from 3-point range) and watched from the bench as Daniel Gibson made a number of big plays in his place in the fourth quarter of Game Three. Even with Hughes out, Game Four should still go down to the wire with the outcome likely in James' hands again. At home, that makes Cleveland the pick (-1) according to Dunkel, which has the Cavaliers favored by 3. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (-1). Here are all of today's games.

                          Tuesday, May 29

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at Pittsburgh Pirates (-131, 8 ½)

David Wells can’t pitch on the road anymore. The 44-year-old left-hander is 1-2 with an 8.84 ERA in three road starts this season, allowing 18 runs and 33 hits in just 18 innings.

Wells’ legendary control also suffers away from home. He has eight strikeouts and nine walks on the road compared to 21 strikeouts and four walks at home.

His opponent, Tom Gorzelanny, can pitch anywhere. The second year starter has an ERA in 2.60 both at home and one the road. He’s easily been the ace of the Pirates staff this season, going 5-3 with a 2.51 ERA overall.

This is also a bad spot for the Padres. They are heading east after taking five of six in their latest homestand, including all three games from the Milwaukee Brewers just before their series in Pittsburgh.

                          Pick: Pirates -131

Los Angeles Dodgers at Washington Nationals (+148, 8)

Don’t look now, but few teams are hitting hotter than the Nationals. They're averaging seven runs per game over their last six and batting .317 over that time. Washington has also been an unbelievable bet over the last three weeks, going 12-5 in their last 17 despite being an underdog in every game.

Washington is up against Dodgers starter Brad Penny, who struggled in his last road start. The Los Angeles right-hander allowed eight runs, all earned, in his last road start against the Angels. He is 3-1 with a 3.46 ERA in four road starts this season.

The Dodgers are also being outscored by an average of 3.87 to 3.96 on the road this year despite a 12-11 record. Jason Simontacchi will start for the Nationals.

                          Pick: Nationals +148

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels (-143, 9 ½)

The only thing better than fading Ervin Santana on the road is backing him at home.

The Angels’ starter is 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in four home starts this season. He is 0-5 with a 9.30 ERA in six road starts.

Because his road starts outweigh his home starts, Santana’s overall numbers hide just how well he pitches at Angel Stadium. His overall numbers show a 6.00 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP.

The Angels are also in a great rebound spot. They are obviously playing well after sweeping the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, but got pounded by the Angels last night in a classic letdown situation. Look for them to rebound today against Triple-A call-up Ryan Feierabend.

                          Pick: Angels -143

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            HOT

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - There's a ton of value in the Braves tonight with Smoltz taking the hill in Milwaukee at Miller Park against the Brewers. Smoltz is 7-2 on the season with a sparkling 0.87 ERA over his last three starts. During that span, the 200-game winner has only walked three batters in over 20 innings pitched while sporting a 0.82 WHIP. Most importantly, Smoltz has kept the ball in the park for the Braves, who are +107 underdogs tonight. The 1996 NL Cy Young award winner hasn't given up a dinger since May 9.

Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants) - Believe the hype on the Giants' 2006 No. 1 draft pick. Lincecum is undefeated in four starts on the year with a 1.64 ERA since May 7. Much like the aforementioned Smoltz, Lincecum has thrived by keeping runners off the bases. With a .210 OBP against and 0.77 WHIP in three trips to the mound, Lincecum is a sharp pick for baseball bettors tonight as the Giants take on the New York Mets. Oddsmakers have San Fran as +138 road underdogs at Shea Stadium.

                            Cold

Ervin Santana (Los Angeles Angels) - Santana has been brutal this season, especially over the month of May. His 1.72 WHIP has contributed to an 8.04 ERA since May 9, which has contributed to some bad times for Angels backers. The right-hander is also a shaky 1-4 during night games this season with a 5.22 ERA. With the Angels hosting the Seattle Mariners tonight under the lights of Anaheim, it's a gamble to take the Angels as -147 favorites.

Matt Belisle (Cincinnati Reds) - Belisle is enduring a tough stretch after a promising start for the Reds, +122 underdogs tonight against the Houston Astros. In his second year as a starter in Cincinnati, the Reds might be wishing they would have kept this guy in the bullpen. Belisle is 1-2 over his last three outings with a 7.64 ERA and stiff .427 OBP against. It hasn't helped Reds bettors that Belisle is allowing nearly every second batter to reach base during the skid.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
