Ex-LSU player missing in Lake Pontchartrain after jetski accident

08:26 AM CDT on Monday, May 28, 2007

Former LSU star and current New England player Marquise Hill (DE) is missing in Lake Pontchartrain following a jetski accident Sunday evening, according to his agent Albert Elias.

Hill and a woman were on the jetski when they fell off for an unapparent reason. Elias said the woman, who could not swim, was able to float to safety, but Hill drifted in another direction.

Rescue crews and choppers are on the scene.

Elias said that neither Hill nor the unidentified woman was wearing a life preserver.

“I’m an optimistic guy,” said Elias. “He’s a strong kid and fighter.”

Hill played on LSU’s National Championship team. He prepped at De La Salle and was drafted in the second round in 2004.

“He’s a guy that puts other people in front of himself,” said Elias. “He was worried about trying to get her to safety while he was floating in another direction.”

            Update

Body of ex-LSU star found in Lake Pontchartrain

03:06 PM CDT on Monday, May 28, 2007

            WWLTV.com (New Orleans)

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said Monday afternoon it had found the body of former LSU star Marquise Hill near the area where he was last seen Sunday night following a jet skiing incident.

Hill was jet skiing with a female friend in Lake Pontchartrain when they both went into the water for an as yet undetermined reason. Eyewitnesses said the two were drifting apart in a strong current but that the woman was able to grab hold of a piling until she could be rescued.

Attempts to get to Hill while he was still visible were unsuccessful.

According to Coast Guard officials, a call came in around 9:30 Sunday evening about a woman floating in the water, hanging on to a piling.

Elias said the woman was rescued and rushed to the hospital where she told them that Hill had tried to keep her calm even as the two were drifting away from each other.

Elias said neither Hill nor the woman was wearing a life preserver.

Friends told Eyewitness News reporter Jill Hezeau that Hill was in for the holiday weekend and had gone to Lake Pontchartrain to jet ski.

“I’d never seen him as happy as he was yesterday,” said his uncle Aaron Hill.

A graduate of De La Salle High, Elias said that Hill has spent much of his time since Katrina helping family members rebuild their homes.

Hill played on LSU’s National Championship team and was drafted in the second round by New England in 2004.

It really is sad Bry. He was only 24 years old, and had a great future ahead of him

Stupid question here but if you are not a very good swimmer, why tha fuck would you jet ski in the middle of a lake with no preserver? Seriously, i read reports where she couldn't even swim. Are you kidding me???

That's the first thing I picked up on Wayne. If you can't swim, why are you in the water? And yet, she was the one to survive.

But there is no reason not to have on a life vest when jet skiing.

i dont get it either. my friend growing up had a stand up jet ski. we use to go on the mohawk and hudson river all the time. we always wore the life jacket. i remember one time i was on it and hit a wake from a boat wrong and flipped the ski...i kid you not if i didnt have that jacket on i'd prolly be dead. and i know how to swim. even with it on the impact was so intense i got the wind competely knocked outta me. but was alright and only had minor brusing. how anyone can go on something like that w/o a jacket is beyond me.

                              Great point Bry!

I love the water and i can swim well too but we used to go tubing on the lake and we never went without a vest. I swear, i was thrown off that tube so hard at times that i blacked out after hitting the water more than once.
