Los Angeles Dodgers at Florida Marlins (-119, 9)
Florida Marlins ace Dontrelle Willis’ 5-1 record can be very deceiving. A glance at the left-hander’s season stat sheet tells the real story.
Willis has benefited from the Marlins’ surprising run production this season, receiving almost eight runs in support of each of his seven starts. This has offset his ballooning 5.44 ERA.
In the two games in which the Fish failed to provide more than six runs, Willis is 0-1 with a no decision. At home, Willis is posting a 6.85 ERA and, outside of Tuesday’s late-inning heroics, Florida hasn’t had the same pop in its bats like it did to start the season.
Pick: Dodgers +111
Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays (+156, 9 ½)
Something is rotten north of the border and the stink is coming from Blue Jays front office. In the midst of a seven game losing skid, usually polite Canadian baseball fans are starting to turn on their beloved Blue Jays. And most of the finger-pointing is directed at general manager J.P. Ricciardi.
Ricciardi is catching flack from the Toronto media after bending the truth when it comes to the numerous injuries that have sent Toronto into its current tailspin. The Blue Jays' struggles have also started talk about manager John Gibbons' future with the team.
“I’ve never been a guy to panic and there’s no need to panic,” Gibbons told reporters. “This is our team. I like our team. We’re going through a tough time. You can’t jump ship every time something goes bad. You swim together and sink together.”
Unfortunately for Jays bettors, this is only going to get worse before it gets better. That’s life in the American League East.
Pick: Red Sox -164
Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Angels (-122, 9)
Can Cleveland pitcher Paul Byrd get some love?
Byrd has had a rough start to the season but it isn’t opposing lineups that are wearing the right-hander thin. He started the year having a potential no-hitter wiped off the board by bad weather, was skipped over in the Indians rotation and is now the subject of trade rumors after Fox Sports reported the New York Yankees were interested in the 36-year-old.
Despite all the setbacks and distractions, Byrd has remained focused on pitching. He is 2-1 in his limited starts this season, posting a 2.92 ERA for a Cleveland team that is quickly becoming the best team in baseball.
The Tribe has won seven of their last 10 games and is clubbing their way up the MLB money list, including a 5-1 win over the Angels on Tuesday. Byrd is 3-0 in five starts versus Los Angeles, posting a 4.15 ERA against his former team.
Pick: Indians +113
