Los Angeles Dodgers at Florida Marlins (-119, 9)

Florida Marlins ace Dontrelle Willis’ 5-1 record can be very deceiving. A glance at the left-hander’s season stat sheet tells the real story.

Willis has benefited from the Marlins’ surprising run production this season, receiving almost eight runs in support of each of his seven starts. This has offset his ballooning 5.44 ERA.

In the two games in which the Fish failed to provide more than six runs, Willis is 0-1 with a no decision. At home, Willis is posting a 6.85 ERA and, outside of Tuesday’s late-inning heroics, Florida hasn’t had the same pop in its bats like it did to start the season.

    Pick: Dodgers +111

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays (+156, 9 ½)

Something is rotten north of the border and the stink is coming from Blue Jays front office. In the midst of a seven game losing skid, usually polite Canadian baseball fans are starting to turn on their beloved Blue Jays. And most of the finger-pointing is directed at general manager J.P. Ricciardi.

Ricciardi is catching flack from the Toronto media after bending the truth when it comes to the numerous injuries that have sent Toronto into its current tailspin. The Blue Jays' struggles have also started talk about manager John Gibbons' future with the team.

“I’ve never been a guy to panic and there’s no need to panic,” Gibbons told reporters. “This is our team. I like our team. We’re going through a tough time. You can’t jump ship every time something goes bad. You swim together and sink together.”

Unfortunately for Jays bettors, this is only going to get worse before it gets better. That’s life in the American League East.

    Pick: Red Sox -164

Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Angels (-122, 9)

Can Cleveland pitcher Paul Byrd get some love?

Byrd has had a rough start to the season but it isn’t opposing lineups that are wearing the right-hander thin. He started the year having a potential no-hitter wiped off the board by bad weather, was skipped over in the Indians rotation and is now the subject of trade rumors after Fox Sports reported the New York Yankees were interested in the 36-year-old.

Despite all the setbacks and distractions, Byrd has remained focused on pitching. He is 2-1 in his limited starts this season, posting a 2.92 ERA for a Cleveland team that is quickly becoming the best team in baseball.

The Tribe has won seven of their last 10 games and is clubbing their way up the MLB money list, including a 5-1 win over the Angels on Tuesday. Byrd is 3-0 in five starts versus Los Angeles, posting a 4.15 ERA against his former team.

    Pick: Indians +113

      Streaking Pitchers

      Wednesday, May 9

      HOT

James Shields (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) – Yet another bright spot for the young Devils Rays, Shields has been solid this season. He is 3-0 with a respectable 3.74 ERA. In his last three starts he has given up just six earned runs while pitching into at least the seventh inning. Shields and the D-Rays take on the Baltimore Orioles as +120 underdogs.

Jason Marquis (Chicago Cubs) – Marquis is proving to be quite the acquisition for the Cubs this season. The former Cardinal is off to a blazing start going 4-1 and posting a sparkling 2.09 ERA. In his last trip to the hill he pitched eight innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits in a 7-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He'll face the Pirates again today with oddsmakers setting the Cubs as –143 faves.

John Maine (New York Mets) – Maine is the early frontrunner for the NL Cy Young award this season. Starting the season 5-0 with a league-best 1.37 ERA, Maine is just one of many bright spots for the co-division leading Mets. Maine comes with a –133 price tag tonight with New York in San Francisco to take on the Giants.

      COLD

Woody Williams (Houston Astros) – Williams will be searching for his first victory of the season when he and the Astros take on the Cincinnati Reds as +117 underdogs tonight. The start will mark his sixth road start in eight outings this season. He is 0-3 with a 5.64 ERA away from home this season.

Brett Tomko (Los Angeles Dodgers) – Tomko has been shuttled back and forth between the bullpen and the starting rotation this season. He hasn't found success in either. He has yet to record a victory and is carrying a hefty 4.40 ERA and a .374 OBP. Tomko has lost his last three starts, allowing three or more earned runs in each and lasting no longer than the sixth inning. Books have him listed as a +111 underdog against Dontrelle Willis and the Marlins tonight. Tomko is 6-1 in his career versus Florida.
