    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Pirates-Cubs was last game to end Tuesday night, as the Bucs edged Chicago 4-3 in 15 innings. Jack Wilson hit pair of sac flies, one to tie it in 9th, one a game-winner in 15th.

-- Brewers are now 23-10; naysayers are lining up to bash the Brew Crew, but they pitch well, so they'll last.

-- Chad Gaudin is 2-1, 2.40 in seven starts for Oakland, just another guy coming out of nowhere to help keep the A's in contention, while Rich Harden heals; Billy Beane might not be a genius, but he's the closest thing baseball has to one.

-- You can get Eldrick Woods at -$275 head-to-head over Phil Mickelson (+$215) if you like to invest in such things, this week at the Players' Championship.

-- Chone Figgins is hitting .103 since coming back from the broken fingers he suffered in spring training.

-- If you're running the Blue Jays and you get 41,000+ fans in house on $2 Tuesday, starting freakin' Victor Zambrano is a good way to pop the fans' bubble. Hard to imagine that Zambrano will get another big league start; he is horrible.

      Wednesday's list of 13: Random mid-week thoughts........

      13) If you look at a Phoenix Suns' boxscore, look first at how many assists Steve Nash gets; 12 or more, Suns will win; less than a dozen, Phoenix will struggle.

      12) Last 11 times Detroit Red Wings had to win playoff game to win a series, they won, the longest such streak in history of the NHL. Next longest such streak was eight in a row.

      11) Underrated baseball record: Rickey Henderson scored the most runs in history, 2,295. Isn't scoring runs what the game is all about? This record should be more well-known.

      10) Roy Oswalt has a 19-1 career record against the Reds.

      9) Benjie Molina is first catcher to hit two homers in an inning since John Bocabella did it, way back in 1973.

      8) Looking at pitching stats, we note that Shields of the Devil Rays has recorded one less out than teammate Kazmir in one less start, while throwing 122 less pitches. Shields is a better pitcher because he is more efficient with his pitches.

      7) Brandon Webb has recorded 84 ground ball outs, 19 outs in the air, a 4.42 ratio; closest ratio to that, amongst starting pitchers, is Julian Tavarez of Boston, at 4.18, with 46 ground ball outs, only 11 in the air.

      6) Then there is Chuck James of Atlanta, whose command is so awful this season, he has gotten only one groundball out in last two starts, compared to 15 in air, with nine strikeouts. Everything he throws is either a ball, or up in the zone.

      5) It is a mere 2,886 miles from AT&T Park in San Francisco to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. You can drive it in three days, if you hurry. How long will it take Barry Bonds to get there? I don't think he'll get in the first year he is eligible.

      4) Bronx Bombers are first team to use 10 different starting Ps in their first 30 games, and first team to use six rookie starters in their first 30 games, which is why Clemens was signed.

      3) David Wells, Greg Maddux, Keith Hernandez all came out against the special privileges Mr Clemens is getting this year, once again. Will be interesting to see how much the media is going to cover his "days off".

      2) Quote of the Day:
"If you think its about the money, you're mistaken."
      Roger Clemens.

Memo to Roger; if this is true, then play for minimum salary, and donate what you make to charity. Then we'll believe you.

      1) I have nothing against people making as much as possible, just don't lie about it. We're not stupid; don't insult us.

#8 Golden State Warriors at #4 Utah Jazz
              Game 2 - Wednesday, May 9th, 9 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The Warriors outplayed the Jazz for most of Game 1 and fell a Stephen Jackson 3-pointer short of pulling off yet another upset. Their goal going in was to win one of the first two games, stealing home-court advantage from Utah. That goal is still very much alive but will take a better closing effort to head back to Oakland tied 1-1. SLIGHT EDGE: WARRIORS
The Jazz showed they have a significant advantage inside in this series with no play exemplifying it more than Carlos Boozer's 20th rebound and putback to break a late tie and put them in position for the Game 1 victory. Utah outrebounded Golden State 54-36, including 20 on the offensive glass, the last of which was grabbed by Boozer. EDGE: JAZZ
Golden State's Baron Davis met his match in Utah's Deron Williams, as both point guards combined for 55 points. But one player who came out of the shadows for the Warriors was Al Harrington, who scoreed 21 points off the bench after seeing very limited action against Dallas at center. Harrington hit 4-of-7 3-pointers but will need to do a better job on the boards because Golden State will need his size. He totaled just 27 points combined in six games against the Mavs while averaging a little over 5 rebounds per game. EDGE: WARRIORS
Golden State is 22-6-1 ATS in its last 29 games overall.
Golden State is 9-2-1 ATS in its last 12 road games.
Golden State is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
Utah is 5-0-1 ATS in its last 6 games overall.
Favorite is 11-5-4 in the last 20 meetings.
OVER is 11-5 in Utah's last 16 games.

              Head-to-Head Recaps

SECOND-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Utah leads 1-0 SU (0-0-1 ATS)

              5/7/07 - Game 1: UTAH 116, Golden State 112 (ATS winner: PUSH -4 | OVER 209)
              Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Surprisingly, the Jazz came out running and gunning, which almost cost them against the high-scoring Warriors. Utah bolted out to an early 17-7 lead and then fought off a flurry by Golden State to stay ahead 37-35 after the first quarter. The Warriors outscored the Jazz 31-26 to take a 66-63 halftime lead, and then Utah needed a strong comeback in the final minutes to pull off the victory. In fact, Golden State let a cover slip away when Matt Harpring hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to force a push. Otherwise, the fast pace forced an easy OVER from the beginning.

5/20/07 - Game 7: Golden State at UTAH (TBD)

              REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Series tied 2-2 SU (Golden State 3-1 ATS)
              UNDER 3-1

              4/9/07 - GOLDEN STATE 126, Utah 102 (ATS winner: GS -5 | OVER 216)
              3/20/07 - UTAH 104, Golden State 100 (ATS winner: GS +7.5 | UNDER 205.5)
              11/25/06 - GOLDEN STATE 91, Utah 78 (ATS winner: GS +1 | UNDER 214)
              11/4/06 - UTAH 106, Golden State 82 (ATS winner: Utah -6 | UNDER 207)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Only the third meeting had meaning for both teams and included the current roster of the Warriors, who made a midseason trade and had to win every game down the stretch just to get into the playoffs. The host won each time, and both were among the best home teams in the NBA during the regular season. This makes for another exciting series that could go the distance depending on whether or not one loses the momentum gained from the first round.

I wonder if Mets brass is second guessing decision to trade lefty phenom Scott Kazmir for late season run with V Zam.

Uh, every hour of every day, I am guessing

                      Oakland at Kansas City
A good pitching matchup in KC as the Royals' Gil Meche takes on Oakland's Dan Haren. Meche has been solid since coming over as a free agent and enters the game with the third best ERA in the A.L. (2.23). But he has struggled against Oakland in his career with a 2-7 record and 4.56 ERA. The A's haven't had those kind of struggles in Kansas City, where they have won 20 of their last 23, including last night's 6-1 win. And Haren has been lights out recently with a 3-0 mark and 1.59 ERA in his last four starts. Oakland looks like a good pick (-120) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the A's favored straight up by 4. Dunkel Pick: Oakland (-120). Here are all of today's games.

                        Golden State at Utah
While Golden State may have suffered a letdown after the Dallas series, the Warriors were right there in Game One with a chance to pull it out before losing 116-112. Utah looks to be a tougher matchup for Don Nelson's team with Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer playing at a high level and the Jazz showing an ability to keep up with the quick pace of the Warriors. The Jazz also kept their record at home against the spread perfect in the postseason (3-0-1) with the push. But Golden State was able to bounce back from both losses to the Mavs by winning the next game and hasn't lost back-to-back contests since the last week of March. This one is a close call, but the Warriors still look like a decent underdog pick (+3 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Utah favored by only 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Golden State (+3 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
