    Six-Pack for Saturday

-- Mets are now 16-2 in Maine's last eighteen starts.

-- Mets also have won their last 12 games at Arizona, but are facing Brandon Webb Saturday night.

-- Igawa has made five starts for Bronx Bombers, and has allowed 27 runs in 24.2 IP. Not very good.

-- Thru Wednesday, 22.8% of Ryan Howard's fly balls have gone over the fence; last year, 38% of them did. Not good.

-- Brett Myers is now Phillies' closer; has any pitcher ever gone from Opening Day starter to closer in four weeks?

-- The All-Star Game is in San Francisco this July, reminding us of a pet peeve; the DH was made for All-Star Games, but in NL parks, there is never a DH. Stupid.

Saturday's Den: Our experts analyze the Kentucky Derby

      Danny the Glover
The Kentucky Derby is arguably the most exciting 2 minutes in sports; this year certainly will not disappoint. The morning line favorite has only raced 3 times in his career and you have 8 other horses with very legitimate cases to be wearing roses.

After reviewing how I think the race will be run, I have come to the conclusion that one of the non-contenders will be the key to this race = 17-Stormello: if he can break well and get out on the lead at the first turn, I think this will set the race up for three horses to win. I have no particular favorite at this juncture. All 3 have won graded stakes in their last outings, have shown steady improvement and the key factor: I think they are all sitting on a breakout race. The last factor – each has a possible fatal flaw. Whoever overcomes this the best is your winner.

6-Cowtown Cat. I think he can tuck in within a length of Stormello, letting him do the tough work on the front, breeze along for the first 6 furlongs or so and then dig in for stretch drive with enough gas in his tank to make the wire. Without a pace setter, he could be in trouble.

12-Nobiz Like Shobiz. The model of consistency and solid results in all 6 outings. If you discount the difficult trip in the Fountain of Youth, he is your morning line favorite. I like the path Tagg has picked for him and I think the target from Day 1 has been May 5 for his moment to shine. One troubling thing is does he have the tactical speed to keep him out of trouble into and out of the first turn.

14-Scat Daddy. Has a similar resume as Nobiz. I like that he is coming from the last post of the main gate. This will afford Prado – a master tactician – to move Scat Daddy into a favorable position. I have some worries that he does not have a mile and quarter in him after seeing him lug home in the Hopeful, BC Juvenile and Holy Bull. Others:

2-Curlin. Best on paper and can very well prove that he is the class of three year-olds but I am just not real comfortable with a horse that did not run as a two-year old and only has three starts in his lifetime. The inexperience may very well chew him up in the Derby.

7-Street Sense. I think the race of his lifetime will be at Churchill – unfortunately it was last year in the Breeder’s Cup. He will be in contention but I fear he will get stuck in the middle-front of the pack and have too much traffic to overcome to become the first Juvenile winner to pull off the Derby.

8-Sam P. Ran two solid races at Santa Anita but could not take a win. Has improved to the point that if he takes another step forward, provided he can pick his way through the field, he could surprise on the stretch drive to be in the money for exotic wagering.

      Bets:
      $2 Triples
Cowtown Cat/Nobiz Like Shobiz/Scat Daddy on top
      with Cowtown Cat/Nobiz/Scat/Curlin/Street Sense/Sam P.
      with Cowtown Cat/Nobiz/Scat/Curlin/Street/Sam P.

      Total Bets = $60

      DD Lohaus
It's hard to believe its Derby time again. This officially kicks off my handicapping season and what an interesting renewal. As I write this the weather is questionable at best. Forecast is for thunderstorms off and on and the track was sloppy on Thursday. Therefore, I believe there will be moisture in the track and there is 50/50 chance the track will be less than fast.

This group of horses all have some issues and cases can be made against most. What does this mean? If you like a certain horse stick with it. There will be value throughout the race. As I went through the form I found myself coming back to the same four or five horses. To me each appeared able to stand the rigors of a 20 horse field and all the outside distractions.

Cowtown Cat keeps popping into my sights. I know he had it easy on the way to the Derby and the experts say he is too slow. Here's what I say: he is smartly climbing the ladder of competition while building confidence. His workouts have been excellent and I think the poly workout says he is going to move forward at the right time. He is flying under the radar and he will certainly present some value.

Street Sense won the Breeders Cup Juvenile last year and I put absolutely no stock in the jinx. Each year and each horse is different and Carl Nafzger knows how to train. He romped on this track before and I think he is the one to beat. I think horse move up the next race after a poly track race and this sets up for a huge finish for Street Sense.

Scat Daddy is a working man's horse. He has faced all comers and beat many in this field so he eliminates any questions about if he belongs in this race. I am sure Pletcher will have him ready and I expect him to be a factor. I think when the betting closes he may be shorter than some think.

Hard Spun is a horse I thought would be my big play until he went out and put up a .57 workout. He may have tipped his hand and gone over the top. His last was a cake walk and I though he would be the freshest and tightest of everyone. Now I think he still has a shot and his trainer was down-playing the workout (what's he supposed to say) but I think the edge may be off Hard Spun.

Great Hunter is an interesting horse. He seems to do well when he stays out of trouble and gets some racing room. However, his jockey is prone to getting into trouble and I would think a rider change might improve his chances but what do I know? He is nearly dead from post 20, but he can rate a little as seen in the RB Lewis and maybe he can find the daylight at the end and make the winning move. He should prove some value.

      Derby Quick Takes:
Sedgefield: better on turf, some trouble in Lanes End: Toss

Curlin: Very good, short odds, not enough experience for me. Toss

Zanjero: Deep closer doesn't get enough pace. Toss

      Storm in May: Toss

      Imawildandcrazyguy: Toss

Liquidity: Distance a question. No quality wins. Toss

Teuflesberg: Toss Bwana Bull: May like wet. Toss

Nobiz Like Shobiz: Can't bet Tagg. Funny Cide was a fluke! Toss

Sam P.: Under the radar, may have a shot, too unknown to me. Toss

Tiago: Another deep closer may not get pace. Peaked too early. Toss

Circular Quay: Last was awesome. Peaked too early? Who did he beat? Toss

Stormello: Runs hard but going the wrong way lately. May need a break. Toss

Any Given Saturday: Another Pletcher. Wise Guy Horse. Just can't. Toss

Dominican: Last took it all out him. Toss

      The Bets:
      $22WP Cowtown Cat
      $13WP Street Sense
      $5WP Hard Spun
      $2 TriBox
      Cowtown Cat/Street Sense/Hard Spun/Scat Daddy/Great Hunter

      Total Bets: $200.00
Good luck; see you in Maryland!

      Capper Zeke
      1. Scat Daddy - Pletcher runner has improved in each start as 3 year old and I'm looking for another forward move today. Should not be far from pace and take the lead in stretch and get the roses with Edgar Prado.

      2. Street Sense - BC Juvy champ making 3rd start of year should be fit as fiddle and making run at Scat Daddy deep stretch only to fall 1 length short.

      3. Hard Spun - Could find himself on lead and take this field a long way. Was originally this prognosticator's top pick but I'm concerned he left his race on the surface during Monday's blistering :57 3/5 work. Could be gasping for air inside 8th pole.

      4. Circular Quay - Late running chestnut colt will be looking to pick up the pieces in deep stretch but fall short. Include him in your triples and superfecta's. mmm

St. Louis right-hander Kip Wells has picked up four straight losses since picking up a 10-1 victory over Houston on April 8th. He's allowed 15 runs and 15 hits over his last two starts. EDGE: ASTROS & OVER
Wells hasn't had any success at Busch Stadium on the year, posting an 0-3 record and 6.11 ERA. EDGE: ASTROS

The Mariners have been outscored 39-9 in Weaver's four starts this season. BIG EDGE: YANKEES
Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang will make his third start of the season and it comes against a perfect opponent, as he's a perfect 4-0 with a 3.25 ERA in four career starts against the Mariners. BIG EDGE: YANKEES
The Yankees are 21-7 in Wang's last 28 home starts.

Philadelphia Phillies at San Francisco Giants (FOX | 3:55 PM ET)
Philadelphia right-hander Jon Lieber has no wins on the road this season in three appearances (two starts), but certainly has pitched well with a 2.03 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES
Lieber has held San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds in check during his career. Bonds is hitting just .179 against Lieber in 39 plate appearances. EDGE: PHILLIES
San Francisco starter Noah Lowry enters this game with three straight victories and is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three home starts this season. EDGE: GIANTS
Lowry is an even 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA in three starts against the Phillies. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES

Baltimore right-hander Daniel Cabrera pitched seven shutout innings against Cleveland in his only career start against them. EDGE: ORIOLES
Cabrera has been fighting control problems in his last two starts, issuing 11 walks in his last two starts - picking up losses in both. EDGE: INDIANS
The OVER is 11-2-1 in Cabrera's last 14 Saturday starts.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves (7:05 PM ET)

Atlanta's Tim Hudson has arguably been baseball's best pitcher this season, registering a perfect 3-0 record with a 1.40 ERA. The Braves have won five out of his six starts this season, including all three at Turner Field. EDGE: BRAVES
The OVER is 10-4 in Hudson's last 14 road starts.
The Braves are 4-0 in Hudson's last four starts versus the Dodgers.

#5 Chicago Bulls at #1 Detroit Pistons
          Game 1 - Saturday, May 5th, 7 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

Ben Wallace is the obvious storyline here after leaving the Pistons for the Bulls in the offseason. Wallace was outstanding in the first-round sweep of Miami, even making 7-of-8 free throws in Game 4. He didn't fit into the plans of Detroit head coach Flip Saunders but has been exactly what Chicago needed, a defensive stopper in the middle who can also grab offensive rebounds for the team's mainly perimeter offense. Wallace's matchup with replacement Chris Webber is one of the keys to the series. SLIGHT EDGE: BULLS
Another key matchup is Detroit's Tayshaun Prince vs. Chicago's Luol Deng, who enjoyed a breakthrough series against the Heat by averaging 26.3 points on 58 percent shooting. Prince is an all-defensive team selection who will have a tough time staying with Deng because of his ability to play both inside and outside. Prince does have tons of experience though after going against Miami's Dwyane Wade last year and Kobe Bryant in the 2004 NBA Finals. SLIGHT EDGE: PISTONS
Insiders are concerned with Detroit's sometimes lackadaisical approach to games. The Pistons seem to think they can turn it on and off whenever needed without much concern. Some believe this is a confident bunch who won the 2004 NBA title while others feel head coach Flip Saunders lacks the instinct to go for the kill when ahead and could be the downfall in this series. SLIGHT EDGE: BULLS
Chicago is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 road games.
Chicago is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games vs. Central Division opponents.
Detroit is 17-7-3 ATS in its last 27 games overall.
OVER is 8-2 in Detroit's last 10 home games.
          First-round Results: Chicago | Detroit

          Head-to-Head Recaps

          FIRST-ROUND SCHEDULE

          5/5/07 - Game 1: Chicago at DETROIT (TNT | 7 PM ET)
5/7/07 - Game 2: Chicago at DETROIT (TNT | TBD)

          REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Chicago wins 3-1 SU & ATS
          OVER 3-1

          4/4/07 - Chicago 106, DETROIT 88 (ATS winner: Chicago +6 | OVER 186)
          3/29/07 - CHICAGO 83, Detroit 81 (ATS winner: Det +4.5 | UNDER 181)
          2/25/07 - DETROIT 95, Chicago 93 (ATS winner: Chicago +6 | OVER 182.5)
          1/6/07 - CHICAGO 106, Detroit 89 (ATS winner: Chicago -4.5 | OVER 189.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The Pistons won just one of the regular-season meetings between the teams, and that was a struggle as they had to rally back from down 16 points at home to win by two. The Bulls actually had a chance to win that meeting too, but Ben Gordon's 3-pointer fell short at the buzzer. Chicago then left a very bad taste in Detroit's mouth with a 106-88 beating at The Palace on April 4th. Of course there is the massive sub-plot of this series involving Bulls center Ben Wallace, who left the Pistons for more money and got the best of his former team during the regular season. Only one of these teams will look like a genius after their playoff matchup though, emerging as the favorite to get to the 2007 NBA Finals.

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#4 Utah Jazz at #5 Houston Rockets
          Game 7 - Saturday, May 5th, 9:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)
The home team has won every game of this series so far and is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings overall. Houston made just 6-of-21 shots from 3-point range in Game 5 after sinking 12-of-24 in Game 4. Insiders expect the Rockets - especially the role players - to be much more comfortable at home in Game 7. EDGE: ROCKETS
Houston star Tracy McGrady still has not had a monster offensive game in this series even though he had 26 points and a career-high 16 assists in Game 5. McGrady got his teammates going early on in Game 5 and may need to do the same thing in Game 7 at home. EDGE: ROCKETS
McGrady has played in two Game 7s, and neither has obviously resulted in a win since he has never won a playoff series. In fact, McGrady's two previous Game 7 losses have been decided by a combined 55 points. EDGE: JAZZ
Utah is 3-11 ATS in its last 14 road games.
Houston is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 home games.
Utah is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games vs. Southwest Division opponents.
UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

          Head-to-Head Recaps

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Series tied 3-3 SU (Utah 4-2 ATS)
          UNDER 4-2

          5/3/07 - Game 6: UTAH 94, Houston 82 (ATS winner: Utah -4.5 | UNDER 183)
          Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Jazz continued their trend of leading at halftime in every game of the series and then played outstanding defense in the third quarter to take a 68-62 lead into the fourth. The Rockets then cut an 11-point lead to one twice before Utah went on a final run to close out the game and cover the spread. Houston committed 19 turnovers, and star Tracy Grady made just 1-of-8 shots from the field in the second half to contribute to a disappointing offensive performance and help cash the UNDER.

          4/30/07 - Game 5: HOUSTON 96, Utah 92 (ATS winner: Utah +6 | OVER 188)
          Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Jazz again started out strong, leading at halftime for the fifth time in as many games of the series. They also outscored the Rockets in the third quarter 28-25 to take a four-point lead into the fourth. That's when Houston came alive though, taking a seven-point lead late until Utah battled back with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to one. The Rockets then closed out the game by when Yao Ming hit two free throws with 11 seconds left. Yao seemed to be fouled again with five seconds left after Utah's Deron Williams missed a 3-pointer, but the refs let the clock run out to cost Houston backers and hand Jazz supporters a victory against the spread.

          4/28/07 - Game 4: UTAH 98, Houston 85 (ATS winner: Utah -2.5 | UNDER 184)
          Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Utah built a 50-45 lead at halftime and pulled away with a 33-17 edge in the third quarter to rout the Rockets for the second straight game. Houston outscored the Jazz 23-15 in a low-scoring fourth quarter to make the final score a bit more respectable and force the total UNDER for the third time in the series.

          4/26/07 - Game 3: UTAH 81, Houston 67 (ATS winner: Utah -4.5 | UNDER 188)
          Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Rockets scored just 25 points in the second half after scoring the same amount in the second quarter alone. That ensured an easy UNDER and sent the Rockets to a franchise-low 67 points in a playoff game. The Jazz shut down everybody other than Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming, who combined for 50 points.

          4/23/07 - Game 2: HOUSTON 98, Utah 90 (ATS winner: Houston -5 | OVER 188)
          Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Rockets didn't wait until the second half to take off in this one. Instead, they rallied back in the second quarter after trailing by nine points at the end of a quarter for the second straight game. Each team failed to score more than 17 points in one of the first two quarters, but the second half turned what looked like a sure UNDER into an OVER. Houston scored 59 points after the break, including 31 in the fourth quarter, the highest total for either team through the first two games.

          4/21/07 - Game 1: HOUSTON 84, Utah 75 (ATS winner: Houston -6.5 | UNDER 188.5)
          Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The story of this game was Houston star Tracy McGrady, who scored just 1 point by halftime but erupted for 16 in the third quarter to turn a 9-point halftime deficit into a 6-point lead going into the fourth quarter. The Rockets outscored Utah 26-11 in the third after trailing 42-33 at the break. A couple missed 3-pointers by the Jazz in the final seconds kept them from covering. Each team also failed to score more than 20 points in two of the four quarters to force the total UNDER.

          REMAINING SCHEDULE

          5/3/07 - Game 6: Houston at UTAH (TNT | 8 PM ET)
5/5/07 - Game 7: Utah at HOUSTON (IF NECESSARY, TBD)

          REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Utah wins 3-1 SU & ATS
          OVER/UNDER 2-2

          4/18/07 - UTAH 101, Houston 91 (ATS winner: Utah -8.5 | UNDER 192.5)
          4/1/07 - Utah 86, HOUSTON 83 (ATS winner: Utah +5.5 | UNDER 189.5)
          1/5/07 - HOUSTON 100, Utah 86 (ATS winner: Houston -3 | OVER 184.5)
          11/1/06 - UTAH 107, Houston 97 (ATS winner: Utah +1.5 | OVER 182.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: You can throw out the last meeting between the teams on the last day of the regular season, as Houston stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady sat out to rest for the playoffs. Yao also missed Houston's lone win in the season series with a broken leg, so Utah won both meetings when the teams were at full strength. Utah has a slightly better home record, so the home-court edge could be the key in this series for the Rockets even though the Jazz have proven they can win at Houston. This should be one of the most competitve matchups of the first round.

                            San Diego at Florida
San Diego looks to bounce back from yesterday's loss in the series opener behind veteran David Wells. Wells has looked sloppy in the early going (6.23 ERA) as the Padres are just 2-3 in his five starts. But those three losses came against Derek Lowe (twice) and Brandon Webb, opposition that is significantly tougher than Florida starter Sergio Mitre. Mitre has a better ERA than Wells (4.05), but has failed to lead the team to a win in any of his three starts. In fact, the Marlins have lost those games by an average margin of 4 1/2 runs. The Padres look like a good underdog pick (+115) in this one according to Dunkel, which has San Diego favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: San Diego (+115). Here are all of today's games.

                              Chicago at Detroit
The Bulls are coming off a sweep of the defending champion Heat, including winning the last two on the road by an average margin of 10 1/2 points. The Pistons also had a sweep in the first round, although it was against a lower-rated Orlando team. And once again Detroit was not that impressive at home, going 1-1 against the spread versus Orlando to give the Pistons a lackluster 17-26-0 ATS home record on the season. That won't get it done against the improving Bulls, who look like a good underdog pick (+5 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Chicago favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Chicago (+5 1/2).
