    Late Monday night update..................

-- Late night Mondays seldom get better than this; we had a Stanley Cup game, an NBA game, and three National League games from the west coast. Who needs sleep?

-- Big Shot Rob strikes again; 36-year old Robert Horry put a dagger thru the Nuggets' playoff hopes, draining a trey from right corner with 0:30 left, giving Spurs 93-89 lead. Horry has six NBA championship rings, and for good reason.

-- San Jose scored a power play goal with under 7:00 left to take a 2-1 lead over Detroit in their western semifinal series. Red Wings are 0-3 in Shark Tank this season.

-- Dodgers, Padres played 17 innings Sunday; both looked sluggish Monday, losing home games to other teams' aces.

-- Carlos Quentin reached base five times against LA, as the Diamondbacks' ace, Webb, looked sharp again.

-- Giants have lot of good arms; they also have prize rookie Lincecum, who struck out 14 in six IP Sunday, in minor league game against the Rockies' AAA team.

Tuesday's list of 13: What have you done for me lately?

      13) The jackals are circling over Joe Torre, even though he's won four World Championships in the Bronx. No AL titles in last three years, no world titles in last six, so people forget.

      12) My contention has always been that Torre is an average skipper; he had no playoff wins in his 12 years as a manager before getting handed the keys to the Cadillac. Unfortunately for Torre, the Cadillac has gotten old, and the warranty is up.

      11) Torre will be 67 in June, and Americans dislike two things; losing and aging. I have heard more than one person say the game is passing him by, but baseball doesn't move that fast. The problem isn't Torre, its that his pitching staff stinks.

      10) In 23 games this season, the Bronx starting pitcher failed to finish the fifth inning 12 times. While Joe Kerrigan sits out in the bullpen, a proven big league pitching coach, the Bronx pitching coach is former star Ron Guidry. There is no doubt Kerrigan is more qualified, but Guidry is a bigger name.

      9) Did Torre sign Carl Pavano? Farnsworth? Igawa? Randy Johnson? The farm system hasn't developed many pitchers, is that Torre's fault? Managers are like QBs in football, they get too much credit when they win, too much blame if they lose. The old cliche is you can't fire 25 players, but it would be nice if you signed guys who could pitch.

      8) If Torre goes, they better send GM Brian Cashman out the door with him, since Cashman assembled this pitching staff.

      7) Oddity about Torre: He never played in the postseason as a player: he got traded from Atlanta to St Louis before the '69 season, after Cardinals had won NL in '67-'68, just before the Braves made playoffs in '69. Bad timing.

      6) Only once in last eleven years did Bronx win less than 92 games, and they won World Series that year.

      5) Boston has spent a fortune this offseason, as scumweasel agent Boras is seemingly intent on helping them win, handing them JD Drew after they signed Matsuzaka. Fact of matter is, Torre won big when his team had ton more resources than its competition, and now, it is on equal footing with Red Sox.

      4) Bronx has television station (YES) that is starved for good programming in October, as in pre- and post-game shows for playoff games. It is hard to arrogantly proclaim yourself the "winningest franchise in history of sports" when you haven't won a title since Bill Clinton was President.

      3) Another interesting question is this: If Torre goes, who is a manager who comes in and does better?
Girardi-- He couldn't get along with anyone in Miami
Bowa-- The New York media would drive him crazier.
Mattingly-- Has never managed; this isn't entry level job.
Pena-- He quit on the Royals, so I doubt it.

      2) Did Atlanta fire Bobby Cox when they missed playoffs last year? They had had long playoff streak snapped, but stayed the course and are doing better this season.

      1) Firing Joe Torre would satisfy some nitwits, quiet a media that is bored this time of year, but it wouldn't help them win any more games; thats the objective. The ungrateful humans who want Torre to be fired should take a deep breath and be thankful he won them the four titles he did.

Toronto scored 89,81 points in two games at Swamp, now head home trying to stay alive, tough task vs veteran Net squad that is hitting its stride in playoffs, after a lackluster regular season. Jersey hit 14-27 from arc in Game 4. Team with fewest turnovers has won all four series games. Nets scored 96-102-102 in their series wins, 83 in only loss.

Golden State also has caught fire after struggling just to make playoffs, now they're on verge of huge upset in series. Dallas scored 112 points in only series win, they scored 85-91-99 in its losses. Warriors held them under 44% all three times they won. Game 4 was first time Golden State shot more FTs (37-26), but doubt Warriors can match emotional Game 4 performance.

During season we'll have totals, how teams do on back-to-backs and how teams fare the night after playing certain teams, so log on each and every day of hockey season, all the way until they award Lord Stanley's Cup this spring. .

Home team 3-0 in Buffalo-Ranger series, as Blueshirts scored in second OT to stay within reach of favored Sabres; all three of Buffalo's game at MSG this season went OT. Sabres have a 5-2 third period scoring edge in series, but in last two games, have mustered total of only nine shots; they need to start faster.

Vancouver outshot Anaheim 13-2 in first period Sunday, then faded, as Ducks scored goa in each period, outshot Canucks in last two stanzas, 22-13, and grabbed home ice back. Anaheim won 16 of 23 neutral zone faceoffs in Game 3; they've won 43 of 66 faceoffs in their offensive zone this series.

#6 New Jersey Nets at #3 Toronto Raptors
                Game 5 - Tuesday, May 1st, 7 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

New Jersey outscored the Raptors 49-25 on the fast break through the first three games and then bombed away from 3-point range in Game 4, making a franchise-record 14. This just proves how well-rounded the Nets are and how many different ways they can beat you. BIG EDGE: NETS
Toronto's Chris Bosh played sub-par in New Jersey and should be looking forward to returning home for Game 4. Bosh has averaged just 12 points on the road in this series compared to 23.5 at home. EDGE: RAPTORS
The home team is 8-1-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
UNDER is 13-4 in Toronto's last 17 vs. Atlantic Division opponents.
UNDER is 8-2 in New Jersey's last 10 vs. Atlantic Division opponents.
UNDER is 23-7 in the last 30 meetings.

                Head-to-Head Recaps
FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

New Jersey leads 3-1 SU & ATS
                UNDER 3-1

                4/29/07 - Game 4: NEW JERSEY 102, Toronto 81 (ATS winner: New Jersey -4 | OVER 190.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nets jumped out to another huge lead, outscoring the Raptors 32-15 in the first quarter. New Jersey by as many as 33 in a complete rout, and Toronto's best quarter of 25 points in the fourth wasn't nearly enough to save the OVER.

                4/24/07 - Game 3: NEW JERSEY 102, Toronto 89 (ATS winner: New Jersey -4 | OVER 190)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nets got off to a strong start, leading 31-19 at the end of the first quarter and 58-39 at halftime. While the Raptors outscored them 29-21 in the third, they never really threatened the spread. Vince Carter scored a game-high 37 points for New Jersey while Jason Kidd had a monster triple double with 16 points, 16 rebounds and 19 assists despite playing with a knee injury. The total went OVER on a T.J. Ford jumper with 1:41 remaining, which turned out to be the last scoring play of the game.

                4/24/07 - Game 2: TORONTO 89, New Jersey 83 (ATS winner: Toronto -5.5 | UNDER 193.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The OVER in this game was virtually killed at the end of the first quarter with Toronto up 14-12. The Nets held an 83-82 lead with 46 seconds left and then Bostjan Nachbar missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds left that would have tied it. Anthony Parker then sealed the deal for the Ratpors and their backers by making three straight free throws to earn a win and cover, tying up the series at a game apiece.

                4/21/07 - Game 1: New Jersey 96, TORONTO 91 (ATS winner: New Jersey +4.5 | UNDER 194)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nets came out firing on all cylinders and took advantage of some first-half foul trouble by Toronto's Chris Bosh. Experience definitely looked to be the difference early on as New Jersey built a 51-41 halftime lead. T.J. Ford kept the Raptors in the game with 21 points and then backup Jose Calderon ignited a 17-5 run to open the fourth quarter and pull Toronto within 84-83. However, former Raptor Vince Carter overcame a poor 5-for-19 shooting day by making some key free throws down the stretch as the Nets held off the home team.

                REMAINING SCHEDULE

5/1/07 - Game 5: New Jersey at TORONTO (TNT | 7 PM ET)
5/4/07 - Game 6: Toronto at NEW JERSEY (IF NECESSARY, TBD)
5/6/07 - Game 7: New Jersey at TORONTO (IF NECESSARY, TBD)

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Series tied 2-2 SU & ATS
                UNDER 3-1

                2/14/07 - TORONTO 120, New Jersey 109 (ATS winner: Toronto -9.5 | OVER 190)
                1/9/07 - NEW JERSEY 101, Toronto 86 (ATS winner: New Jersey -3.5 | UNDER 194.5)
                12/15/06 - TORONTO 90, New Jersey 78 (ATS winner: Toronto +2.5 | UNDER 193)
                11/1/06 - NEW JERSEY 102, Toronto 92 (ATS winner: New Jersey -7 | UNDER 202)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: This could very well be the best matchup in the first round since each team won two home games en route to splitting the season series. Both meetings in Toronto had players missing for each team, as Chris Bosh missed the first meeting there and Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd sat out the second. The key could very well be former Raptor Vince Carter, who is a free agent at the end of the year and would love nothing more than to stick it to his former team. However, Carter averaged just 14.5 points in Toronto this season on poor 28 percent shooting. Bosh gives the Raptors a serious advantage inside though and could have a coming-out party in his first playoffs similar to Amare Stoudemire a couple years ago.

8 Golden State Warriors #1 Dallas Mavericks
                Game 5 - Tuesday, May 1st, 9:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

Ironically, Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki feels his team still has heart despite coming into this series as a heavy favorite and playing against a team attempting to become the first #8 seed to upset a #1 in a best-of-seven series and third all-time. "Look in the locker room right now, and everybody is very disappointed," Nowitzki said. "We know this team won't give up. We've got a lot of heart. We'll still come out swinging. That's the only thing we've got." SLIGHT EDGE: MAVS
If Nowitzki is going to prove himself as the anticipated NBA MVP, this must be the game. He had his best overall game of the series in Game 4 with 23 points, a game-high 15 rebounds and four steals and needs another strong effort here at home in Game 5. EDGE: MAVS
Mavs head coach Avery Johnson got a good game from center DeSagana Diop in Game 4, as the 7-footer used his size to grab 13 rebounds and block four shots. This was Johnson's third lineup change in the series and paid off against Golden State's Andris Biedrins and Al Harrington, who totaled just five points and six rebounds between them. EDGE: MAVS
The Warriors have shown great poise in this series and believe they can win this series. The Mavs have never rallied back from a 3-1 series deficit with no answer for Golden State point guard Baron Davis, who scored 33 points for the second time in the series in Game 4. EDGE: WARRIORS
Golden State is 20-6-2 ATS in its last 28 meetings.
Golden State is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 road games.
UNDER is 10-3 in Dallas' last 13 games.

                Head-to-Head Recaps
FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Golden State leads 3-1 SU & ATS
                UNDER 3-1

                4/29/07 - Game 4: GOLDEN STATE 103, Dallas 99 (ATS winner: GS +3.5 | UNDER 206.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Mavs blew a seven-point lead with 6:30 left and fell to the Warriors for the eighth time in nine meetings. Golden State had every answer for the defending Western Conference champs, rallying back to tie the game at halftime after trailing by six at the end of the first quarter. Josh Howard scored 20 of his 22 points for the Mavs in the first half, and two 3-pointers by Dirk Nowitzki in the last 14 seconds obviously weren't enough to cover as a road favorite or push the total OVER.

                4/27/07 - Game 3: GOLDEN STATE 109, Dallas 91 (ATS winner: GS +3.5 | UNDER 210.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Warriors got off to a hot 29-20 start and were never really challenged by the Mavs, who struggled to score for the second time in three games. Dallas shot just 39 percent from the field with star Dirk Nowitzki also making less than half his shots for the second time in the series. Golden State took an 18-point lead into the fourth quarter, when both teams slowed the pace with the outcome already decided.

                4/25/07 - Game 2: DALLAS 112, Golden State 99 (ATS winner: Dallas -9.5 | OVER 210)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Mavs weren't able to pull away in this one until the Warriors were without starters Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson, who were both ejected late in the game. Davis was assessed his second technical at the end of the third quarter and tossed for arguing with an official while Jackson was booted with 4:34 left in the game. Golden State again played Dallas tough, leading by two at the end of the first quarter and trailing by two at halftime. The game was fast-paced in the first and third quarters and did not go OVER the total until Kelenna Azubuike made two free throws with eight seconds left. Azubuike helped the Warriors go on a 7-0 run to end the game, but it wasn't enough to cover the spread.

                4/22/07 - Game 1: Golden State 97, DALLAS 85 (ATS winner: Golden State +10.5 | UNDER 213.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Golden State held Dallas to just 17 points in the first quarter and held MVP candidate Dirk Nowitzki to one of his worst playoff games ever to fuel a low-scoring yet dominant victory. Nowitzki totaled just 14 points on 4-of-16 shooting, and the Mavs shot just 35 percent as a team. Dallas did rally to tie the game at halftime by holding the Warriors to 15 points in the second quarter, but Golden State's Baron Davis scored 19 of his game-high 33 points in the third to re-establish the lead. Another sub 20-point quarter in the fourth ensured the total would go UNDER and secured a Warriors win.

                REMAINING SCHEDULE

5/1/07 - Game 5: Golden State at DALLAS (TNT | 9:30 PM ET)

5/5/07 - Game 7: Golden State at DALLAS (IF NECESSARY, TBD)

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Golden State wins 3-0 SU & ATS
                OVER 3-1

                4/17/07 - GOLDEN STATE 111, Dallas 82 (ATS winner: GS -10 | UNDER 215)
                3/12/07 - GOLDEN STATE 117, Dallas 100 (ATS winner: GS +7.5 | OVER 206)
                11/6/06 - Golden State 107, DALLAS 104 (ATS winner: GS +9.5 | OVER 197)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Not to make excuses for the league's best team during the regular season, but the first meeting came during a four-game losing streak to start the 2006-07 campaign. The Mavs then proceeded to win 12 straight games after that loss and went on a 61-8 run, including a 17-game winning streak that was snapped by Golden State. The final meeting was meaningless for Dallas and very meaningful for the the Warriors, who needed to win to hold off the Clippers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Needless to say, Dallas will have no excuses here and will need to show up against a hungry but inexperienced Golden State team that is making its first playoff appearance since 1994.

                            Washington at San Diego
The Nationals took advantage of San Diego's offensive slump by opening their series with a road win over Jake Peavy. The Padres have now dropped five of their last six, batting just .198 and scoring 20 runs in those games. Tonight San Diego will face one of the hottest pitchers around in Shawn Hill, who gave up just two runs on four hits over eight-plus innings in a 4-2 win over Philadelphia his last time out. Padres' starter Chris Young has struggled since beating the Giants 1-0 on April 9 and has given up 12 runs in 14 1/3 innings over his last three starts. The Nats look like a good underdog pick (+148) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Washington favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+148). Here are all of today's games.

                              New Jersey at Toronto
The Raptors were able to win at home in Game Two, but that was two double-digit losses ago as New Jersey thoroughly dominated Sam Mitchell's club in games three and four. Chris Bosh seems to be especially affected by the Nets' defense as he scored just 24 points total in the back-to-back losses. Meanwhile, New Jersey's trio of Vince Carter, Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson have been clicking on all cylinders. And the Nets have been historically tough in close-out games as they have compiled an 8-1 record with Kidd at the point. New Jersey looks like a good underdog pick (+4) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Nets favored straight up by 5 1/2. Dunkel Pick: New Jersey (+4). Here are all of today's games.
