Monday's list of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

    13) Dodger-Padre game Saturday had total of 190 pitches in it as only 62 batters came to plate in 3-2 San Diego win. In the Boston-Bronx game Friday night, Red Sox saw 197 pitches in nine innings, an average of 4.02 per batter, 21.9 per inning

    12) Base stealers are 28-30 stealing against Padres this month.

    11) How is Jim Wolf allowed to umpire Dodger games? His brother is a pitcher for Los Angeles; it can't be that hard for baseball to steer his crew away from the Dodgers, and any hints of impropriety.

    10) I don't always enjoy watching NBA ball, but Mavericks- Warriors games Sunday night was excellent entertainment.

    9) Crowd of 20,672 at Oracle Coliseum was biggest to ever watch a basketball game in Callifornia.

    8) Jessica Alba was courtside; her boyfriend played ball with Baron Davis in high school.

    7) Miami Heat got swept, Mavericks are in deep trouble. This is first time defending champ got swept in first round the next season since 1957.

    6) Giants finally drafted an offensive tackle, a kid from Oregon State who started 37 games and played for former NFL coach, so they did address that need. Tackle is 6-5, 3-2, not biggest tackle, but he is said to be a smart player.

    5) Pirates have scored only 12 runs in Ian Snell's five starts, but they're 4-1 in the games, thats how good Snell has been.

    4) I say this every year, but I watched most of Dodger-Padre game Sunday, all 17 innings of it. Vin Scully announced the whole game, by himself. He is still the best play-by-play guy on TV, and I would have no idea who is second.

    3) If baseball playoffs started Monday morning, here is how they would shake out:

NL: NY Mets, Milwaukee, LA Dodgers, Atlanta
AL: Boston, Cleveland, LA Angels, Minnesota

    2) Rumors from NHL indicate a movement to change the way playoff overtime works; under new format, after a 20-minute period of 5-on-5 skating, it would change to 4-on-4, to create more open ice, resulting in more scoring opportunities, and shorter games. Experts say the quality of play is hurt by long overtime games.

    1) Our deepest sympathies go out to the Hancock family; we write this way too much, but life is precious, there aren't any guarantees. Enjoy it while you can.

Cavaliers will probably finish off Washington here; they led by 17 at half in Game 3, holding off late Wizard rally-- Washington forced 16 turnovers (+9), still lost, despite 37 points by Jamison Wizards are 19-63 from arc in series, as playing without Butler, Arenas is impossible. Cavaliers won first three games in series by 15,7,6 points. It probably ends here.

Home team has dominated Houston-Utah series; Rockets won two home games 84-75/98-90, even though they shot less than 40% from floor in both games. Jazz had led at half in each of the four series games, but was outscored by 18,10 points in second half of two games in Houston.

Denver-San Antonio series has been excellent; Spurs took back home court edge with 96-91 win in Game 3 on this floor, as each team shot 43% from floor. Nuggets made only 3-12 from arc in Game 3, as Spurs made Iverson work for his points, and his % was under 40 for game. Denver outscored Spurs by 14 from the foul line in their only win; they might need to do it again.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (7:05 PM ET)
On Monday night, the Cardinals will take the field for the first time after reliever Josh Hancock's death in a car accident. The Cardinals lost their first game after the death of Daryl Kile five years ago and dropped five of seven. EDGE: BREWERS
The Brewers are the only team in the NL Central with a winning record and have won eight of its last 11 and is a perfect 13-0 when they lead after seven innings. EDGE: BREWERS
The OVER is 8-1 in the Brewers last nine home games.

Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers (7:05 PM ET)
Detroit is 1-4 with pitcher Jeremy Bonderman on the mound, but other than his most recent outing - he hasn't pitched poorly. Prior to his start Tuesday against the Angels, he had a 2.25 ERA over 28 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: TIGERS
While Bonderman hopes to rebound from his rough outing when he faces the struggling Orioles, he's 1-3 with a 6.86 ERA in four starts against them. EDGE: ORIOLES
Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera is 3-0 with a 5.34 ERA in five starts against Detroit. Baltimore hasn't lost any of his outings against the Tigers. BIG EDGE: ORIOLES
The Orioles are 3-12 in Cabrera's last 15 starts as a road underdog.
The UNDER is 4-0 in the last four meetings.

Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates (7:05 PM ET)
Pittsburgh's Freddy Sanchez is batting .206 this season. He's 2-for-22 in his last six games, but the Pirates are 4-2 in those contests. SLIGHT EDGE: CUBS
Chicago starter Rich Hill is 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA in two starts against the Pirates last year. EDGE: CUBS
Pittsburgh left-hander Zach Duke is 0-1 in his last two starts versus the Cubs after winning his first four against them. Overall, he has a 1.40 ERA against Chicago. EDGE: PIRATES
The OVER is 7-0 in the last seven meetings.

Florida Marlins at New York Mets (7:10 PM ET)
A sore shoulder could keep New York pitcher Orlando Hernandez from starting Monday night as the Mets look to continue their dominance of the Florida Marlins this season. He flew to New York from Washington on Sunday to have the pain in his pitching shoulder checked out.
New York rested struggling first baseman Carlos Delgado and Paul Lo Duca on Sunday. Both players should be back in the lineup Monday against a Marlins team New York outscored 20-5 en route to wins on April 19 and 20. BIG EDGE: METS
The OVER is 10-2 in the Marlins last 12 games as an underdog.
The Mets are 10-2 in their last 12 during game 1 of a series.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#2 Cleveland Cavaliers at #7 Washington Wizards

                Game 4 - Monday, April 30th, 7 p.m. Eastern (NBATV)

The Cavaliers are trying to become the third Eastern Conference team in as many days to sweep a first-round series. The Pistons and Bulls completed sweeps on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. EDGE: CAVALIERS
Add Antonio Daniels (ankle) and DeShawn Stevenson (hip) to the list of walking wounded for the Wizards. Both are nursing injuries but are expected to play since Washington is already severely short-handed with top scorers Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler already sidelined. EDGE: CAVALIERS
A Cav not named LeBron has stepped up in each of the first three games of the series, scoring at least 24 points to complement King James. This has been the key to Cleveland's ability to build a double-digit lead in all three games so far. EDGE: CAVALIERS
Cleveland is 15-5-1 ATS in its last 21 road games.
The OVER is 9-2 in Cleveland's last 11 road games.

                Head-to-Head Recaps

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Cleveland leads 3-0 SU (2-1 ATS)
                OVER 2-1

                4/28/07 - Game 3: Cleveland 98, WASHINGTON 92 (ATS winner: Cleveland -5 | OVER 189)

SUMMARY: The Wizards rallied back from a 17-point deficit in the second half yet fell short of covering the spread for the second time in three games. LeBron James did not make a shot in the fourth quarter but sank two free throws with five seconds left to give the Cavs an eight-point lead, and all Antonio Daniels' layup four seconds later accomplished was padding an OVER for the second straight game.

                4/25/07 - Game 2: CLEVELAND 109, Washington 102 (ATS winner: Washington +11 | OVER 186)

SUMMARY: The Cavs had this game well in hand until the fourth quarter, when the Wizards outscored them 39-34. This was bad news for both Cleveland backers and UNDER bettors following a defensive-oriented third quarter which saw Washington score just 15 points and trail 75-63 going into the fourth. The Cavs seemed happy just to come away with a win and without risking further injury to star LeBron James, who played well despite a sprained ankle with 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

                4/22/07 - Game 1: CLEVELAND 97, Washington 82 (ATS winner: Cleveland -12.5 | UNDER 188.5)

SUMMARY: The Wizards surprisingly played even with the Cavs in the second and third quarters, but that wasn't enough to cover the spread or push the game OVER the total. Washington scored just 15 points in the fourth, getting outscored by eight despite Cleveland star LeBron James spraining his ankle in the third. James finished with 23 points while Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored seven straight points to help the Cavs extend their lead to 89-74 with five minutes remaining.

                REMAINING SCHEDULE

                4/30/07 - Game 4: Cleveland at WASHINGTON (NBATV | 7 PM ET)
5/2/07 - Game 5: Washington at CLEVELAND (IF NECESSARY, TBD)
5/4/07 - Game 6: Cleveland at WASHINGTON (IF NECESSARY, TBD)
5/6/07 - Game 7: Washington at CLEVELAND (IF NECESSARY, TBD)

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Cleveland wins 2-1 SU (Washington 2-0-1 ATS)
                UNDER 2-1

                4/6/07 - Cleveland 99, WASHINGTON 94 (ATS winner: PUSH +5 | UNDER 197.5)
                11/18/06 - WASHINGTON 111, Cleveland 99 (ATS winner: Wash -4 | OVER 196.5)
                11/1/06 - CLEVELAND 97, Washington 94 (ATS winner: Wash +6 | UNDER 194)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: This is a very tough spot for the Wizards, who are severely depleted offensively without All-Stars Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas. The duo averaged a combined 47.6 points per game, and Arenas scored a game-high 45 points in Washington's only win over the Cavs this season. Antawn Jamison will be counted on as the main offensive option and averaged 21 points against Cleveland in three games. LeBron James averaged nearly 24 points for the Cavs in the season series, and he will likely be too much for the Wizards to handle in what should be a clean sweep.

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#4 Utah Jazz at #5 Houston Rockets

                Game 5 - Monday, April 30th, 8 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The home team has won and covered each game of this series so far, with the third quarter being the difference. The Jazz were outscored by a combined 22 points in the third quarter of the two games at Houston and will face another tough battle here in Game 5. EDGE: ROCKETS
Houston star Tracy McGrady called himself out before the series, saying it would be his fault if the Rockets don't advance past the first round. McGrady had his best performance in Game 2 at home, and insiders expect him to put the team on his shoulders in this spot. EDGE: ROCKETS
Utah center Memhet Okur has done a better job of defending Houston's Yao Ming in each game, as Yao's scoring production has fallen from 28 points in Game 1 to 20 in Game 4. EDGE: JAZZ
Houston is 3-10 ATS in its last 13 games overall.
Utah is 2-11 ATS in its last 13 road games.

                Head-to-Head Recaps

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Series tied 2-2 SU & ATS
                UNDER 3-1

                4/28/07 - Game 4: UTAH 98, Houston 85 (ATS winner: Utah -2.5 | UNDER 184)

SUMMARY: Utah built a 50-45 lead at halftime and pulled away with a 33-17 edge in the third quarter to rout the Rockets for the second straight game. Houston outscored the Jazz 23-15 in a low-scoring fourth quarter to make the final score a bit more respectable and force the total UNDER for the third time in the series.

                4/26/07 - Game 3: UTAH 81, Houston 67 (ATS winner: Utah -4.5 | UNDER 188)

SUMMARY: The Rockets scored just 25 points in the second half after scoring the same amount in the second quarter alone. That ensured an easy UNDER and sent the Rockets to a franchise-low 67 points in a playoff game. The Jazz shut down everybody other than Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming, who combined for 50 points.

                4/23/07 - Game 2: HOUSTON 98, Utah 90 (ATS winner: Houston -5 | OVER 188)

SUMMARY: The Rockets didn't wait until the second half to take off in this one. Instead, they rallied back in the second quarter after trailing by nine points at the end of a quarter for the second straight game. Each team failed to score more than 17 points in one of the first two quarters, but the second half turned what looked like a sure UNDER into an OVER. Houston scored 59 points after the break, including 31 in the fourth quarter, the highest total for either team through the first two games.

                4/21/07 - Game 1: HOUSTON 84, Utah 75 (ATS winner: Houston -6.5 | UNDER 188.5)

SUMMARY: The story of this game was Houston star Tracy McGrady, who scored just 1 point by halftime but erupted for 16 in the third quarter to turn a 9-point halftime deficit into a 6-point lead going into the fourth quarter. The Rockets outscored Utah 26-11 in the third after trailing 42-33 at the break. A couple missed 3-pointers by the Jazz in the final seconds kept them from covering. Each team also failed to score more than 20 points in two of the four quarters to force the total UNDER.

                REMAINING SCHEDULE

                4/30/07 - Game 5: Utah at HOUSTON (TNT | 8 PM ET)
5/3/07 - Game 6: Houston at UTAH (IF NECESSARY, TBD)
5/5/07 - Game 7: Utah at HOUSTON (IF NECESSARY, TBD)

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Utah wins 3-1 SU & ATS
                OVER/UNDER 2-2

                4/18/07 - UTAH 101, Houston 91 (ATS winner: Utah -8.5 | UNDER 192.5)
                4/1/07 - Utah 86, HOUSTON 83 (ATS winner: Utah +5.5 | UNDER 189.5)
                1/5/07 - HOUSTON 100, Utah 86 (ATS winner: Houston -3 | OVER 184.5)
                11/1/06 - UTAH 107, Houston 97 (ATS winner: Utah +1.5 | OVER 182.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: You can throw out the last meeting between the teams on the last day of the regular season, as Houston stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady sat out to rest for the playoffs. Yao also missed Houston's lone win in the season series with a broken leg, so Utah won both meetings when the teams were at full strength. Utah has a slightly better home record, so the home-court edge could be the key in this series for the Rockets even though the Jazz have proven they can win at Houston. This should be one of the most competitve matchups of the first round.

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#3 San Antonio Spurs at #6 Denver Nuggets

                Game 4 - Monday, April 30th, 10:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The Spurs showed why they have been so successful in the playoffs recently, continuing their road success with a solid victory in Game 3. They owned one of the best road records in the NBA during the regular season and won at Denver for the second straight time and third time in four visits. EDGE: SPURS
Insiders are calling San Antonio's Game 3 win the "Big Game Bob" game and don't expect a repeat performance in Game 4. Robert Horry has been known throughout his career for these signature games, as he hit two big 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. However, it's rare for Horry to have more than one of these games in a series, and it likely won't happen here on the road again. SLIGHT EDGE: NUGGETS
Denver's Allen Iverson had a poor Game 3, making just 7-of-20 shots and 6-of-9 free throws to finish with 20 points. Experts look for Iverson to come up big for the Nuggets in Game 4 with a loss likely meaning elimination in Game 5. EDGE: NUGGETS
Denver is 17-8 ATS in its last 25 games.
UNDER is 22-7-1 in the last 30 meetings between the teams.

                Head-to-Head Recaps

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

San Antonio leads 2-1 SU & ATS
                UNDER 3-0

                4/28/07 - Game 3: San Antonio 96, DENVER 91 (ATS winner: San Antonio -1.5 | UNDER 193)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Spurs took control of this game in the second quarter, outscoring the Nuggets 21-15 to take a 43-40 halftime lead. San Antonio then scored a series-high 32 points in the third and held off a late Denver rally for the second straight game to pull off the victory. Besides the high-scoring third, neither team scored more than 25 points in any of the other quarters to push the total UNDER.

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The only regular-season meeting when both teams were at full strength came on February 20th. Denver's duo of Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson had a rough shooting night, making a combined 9-of-26 shots and totaling 24 points between them as the Spurs returned home for the first time in more than three weeks. San Antonio outscored the Nuggets 30-10 in the third quarter to take a 31-point lead into the fourth quarter. Neither team played their starters in the season finale, and Anthony missed the first meeting due to his highly-publicized suspension for fighting at Madison Square Garden. Denver averaged 108.5 points in winning 10 of 11 to close out the regular season, but whether or not this team can play with discipline against the defensive-minded Spurs remains to be seen.

                              MONDAY, APRIL 30

                              Detroit at San Jose
San Jose was close to taking a commanding 2-0 series lead when the Red Wings woke up with two third-period goals. The game was reminiscent of San Jose's collapse last year against Edmonton after the Sharks had won six of their first seven postseason games. Now the Wings have a little momentum as the venue shifts to San Jose and look like a decent underdog pick according to Dunkel, which has the game even. Dunkel Pick: Detroit (+1 1/2).
