      Streaking Pitchers

      Monday, April 30

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today we bring you a special 'chicken wing' edition of Streaking Pitchers. The 'suicide', 'hot' and 'bbq' pitchers are what we typically identify as 'hot' pitchers, while the 'mild' and 'honey garlic' pitchers are the 'cold' pitchers.

      Suicide

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) - Talk about lights out. Outside of Mark Buerhle's no-hitter, Peavy turned in the performance of the young season his last time out. Peavy gave up only two hits while blanking the Arizona Diamondbacks over seven innings in a 3-2 Padres loss (yeah, the bullpen blew it) on April 25. You also might have heard something about the 16 strikeouts he had in the game including nine batters in a row. Overall, Peavy is 3-0 on the season with a 1.95 ERA for the Padres, who are -245 favorites tonight against the Washington Nationals.

      Hot

Tim Hudson (Atlanta Braves) - Hudson is the hottest starting pitcher in baseball at the moment at 3-0 with a miniscule 1.22 ERA for the Braves. Hudson hasn't given up a home run in three starts and has only given up one dinger on the season. The sinkerballer has also been very tough to hit at home, where he's 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA at Turner Field in Atlanta, where the Braves host the Philadelphia Phillies tonight as -157 favorites.

      BBQ

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - The doctor is in and he's on fire. While pitching well is nothing new for Halladay, it has to be pointed out just how incredible he's been for Blue Jays backers to date. Halladay is undefeated (3-0) with a 2.13 ERA, .215 OBP and an insane 0.79 WHIP over his last three trips to the hill. Most notable for baseball bettors is the 2003 Cy Young award winner's strong 1.56 ERA at home this year because the Jays host the Texas Rangers tonight. Books have Toronto as a -218 favorite.

      Mild

Josh Fogg (Colorado Rockies) - The Rockies right-hander has put up a gaudy 7.80 ERA since April 14, due to his inability to keep runners off the base paths. With a .411 OBP against and 2.00 WHIP, Fogg has sucked all the value out of the Rockies on the road tonight in San Francisco, where oddsmakers have Colorado as a +134 underdogs. To make matters worse, Fogg has posted a 6.61 ERA away from Coors Field while failing to pick up a win.

      Honey Garlic

John Patterson (Washington Nationals) - The fact that Patterson is the ace of the Nationals rotation says all you need to know about betting on Washington tonight. Throw in a winless season and 7.71 ERA and you get the picture as clear as a late-90s MLB locker room ointment. If Patterson puts in a good performance tonight against the Padres, he'll surprise anyone paying attention to the Nats as well as books. Washington is priced as a +227 underdog for their matchup with San Diego.

        News Update

Braves' Hudson in mourning, but will start
        Mon, Apr 30, 2007

Tim Hudson is the Atlanta Braves scheduled starter for today’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies but he may have other matters on his mind.

Hudson received two rounds of bad news Sunday morning after learning his grandmother and former teammate had died. His grandmother, Vera Mickle, died early Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock was a teammate of Hudson’s at the University of Auburn. Hancock died in a car accident yesterday.

“I don’t know what to say,” Hudson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It’s like being punched in the gut. It’s such a shock right now, I don’t know what to say.”

Hudson and Hancock won a College World Series together at Auburn in 1997. The two stayed in contact after college and spent time together in the offseason.

“He’ll be missed, that’s for sure,” Hudson told reporters.

Hudson is 3-0 with a 1.22 ERA in five starts this season.

          Hot Lines

          Monday, April 30

Florida Marlins at New York Mets

Orlando Hernandez is today’s scheduled starter for the New York Mets but the 41-year-old is complaining of tightness in his shoulder. Mets general manager Omar Minaya told the New York Post that Hernandez underwent tests on his shoulder yesterday but also said the right-hander should still pitch today.

The Mets’ offense has been struggling lately. The team scored only 10 runs in a three-game series against the Washington Nationals, Carlos Delgado is in a 1-for-17 slump and Carlos Beltran elected to bunt with runners on first and second on Sunday. Both runners moved up but neither came in to score.

“He occasionally does that on his own,” Mets manager Willie Randolph said of Beltran’s bunt. “If that’s part of what he wants to do, then that’s fine.”

It’s not fine when your No. 3 hitter is bunting with a runner in scoring position.

          Pick: Marlins +154

Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers

If the Dodgers are to be successful tonight, they will need starter Randy Wolf to eat some innings. Los Angeles won yesterday but needed 17 innings to dispose of the San Diego Padres. The bullpen pitched 10 2/3 innings of scoreless ball but will it have any gas left for today?

The Dodgers used six different relievers including setup man Jonathan Broxton and closer Takashi Saito.

The Diamondbacks, winners of five in a row, should be able to take advantage of a tired Dodgers team.

          Pick: Diamondbacks –108

          Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers

Jeremy Bonderman has been the Tigers' most consistent starter but after five starts this season, he still hasn’t earned a decision. He owns a 3.18 ERA and has 29 strikeouts against only four walks.

The Tigers won in dramatic fashion yesterday. Third baseman Brandon Inge hit a homer in the ninth inning to seal a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins. It was the sixth time the Tigers scored the winning run on their final at-bat.

The Orioles have lost six of their last seven games and are struggling to get long outings from their starting pitchers. Yesterday's starter Jaret Wright left after only three innings because of pain in his throwing arm.

          Pick: Tigers -151
