      San Francisco at Arizona
It was not vintage Randy Johnson in his first start of the season as the Big Unit was roughed up for six runs and six hits over five innings in a 10-5 loss to the Padres on the 24th. Matt Morris (2.51 ERA) has yet to give up more than 3 earned runs in any of his starts as the Giants are a perfect 4-0 with Morris on the mound. As a team, the Giants are 8-4 as a Vegas underdog and look poised to take advantage of that status (+150) again according to Dunkel, which has San Francisco favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: San Francisco (+150). Here are all of today's games.

        Chicago at Miami
Miami's ability to put aside a season's worth of injuries and suddenly find a rhythm in the postseason hasn't happened. The defending champs have been thoroughly dominated by the young Bulls and face elimination today. While winning on Miami's court will be tough for Chicago, especially for a team that is 18-23 straight up away from home and 16-24-1 against the spread, the Bulls were able to get past those numbers in a 104-96 win on Friday. Instead it is the Heat that appear to be sinking as they are now just 2-7 straight up and 1-8 ATS in their last nine games, including 0-6 at home. Chicago looks like a good underdog pick (+4 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Bulls favored straight up by 4. Dunkel Pick: Chicago (+4 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

            Sunday, April 29

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Oakland Athletics: D-Rays +108

If you want to believe that the A’s have finally found their rhythm at the plate just because they hung 12 runs on Tampa Bay last night, that’s your business. But before you go out and buy an Eric Chavez jersey, remember that outburst came against Casey Fossum, a guy with an ERA that is going up faster than the price of gas. Tonight they’ll face Scott Kazmir, a leftie with All-World stuff who could win a Cy Young one day. For now, he’ll just have to settle for an easy day against the worst hitting team in baseball.

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres: Dodgers +100

It’s not easy for the Dodgers to get wins in Petco Park, but with these odds, you’ve got to think oddsmakers are giving David Wells credit on name-recognition alone. Wells used to be one of the best hurlers in the game, but as with many other pitchers of his vintage, it’s probably time to start fading the fat man. Sure, he’s coming off a win, but other than a couple W’s against the Diamondbacks, Boomer hasn’t earned a victory since last August. L.A.’s Derek Lowe hasn’t been great either, but he pitched a beauty the last time he saw the Padres.

Kansas City Royals at Seattle Mariners: Mariners -141

It’s tempting to take the Royals after a big road win last night, but that would be a mistake. Even in the 8-3 loss, the M’s managed 13 hits and with a few kinder bounces (and maybe a few decent pitches from Jeff Weaver) this would have been a different story. Tonight, the pitching situation is a bit of an unknown because both teams are handing the ball to a young, inexperienced starter. So you have to look at bullpens, and that’s bad news for the Royals, who have the second worst pen in baseball with five blown saves and a 1-8 record.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals: Cubs +110

What is going on in the National League Central? The Cards are in last and the Brewers are on top? Things probably won’t stay this way for long, but St. Louis isn’t doing itself any favors in its current series with the Cubs. They’ve dropped two in a row at home and now, with the Cubs jacked up on confidence and the Cards absolutely hopeless at the dish, a sweep looks inevitable. Cubs starter Rich Hill isn’t exactly an ace in the hole, but his 1.57 ERA in four starts is good enough to take a chance in this situation.

Chicago started its season with 108-66 win on this floor, now it has chance to sweep defedning champs out of playoffs; Shaq and Wade combined to shoot 7-22 from foul line in Game 3 loss, when Bulls came from behind in 4th quarter to win. Bulls turned ball over 21 times, still won. Will be long summer in Miami.

Phoenix led 11-0 in Game 3, later by 17, but blew game, now are facing long series they'll regret later in playoffs. Stoudemire got in foul trouble in Game 3; if he plays normal minutes, don't think Lakrs can hang, but Suns needed seven games to beat Lakers last year, when Amare didn't play.

Nets shot 52.6% in Game 3 win, after making 42.4/40.8% in pair of games north of border; they're still just 22-70 from arc in this series. Toronto has scored 91-89-89 points in series, but gave up 96/102 in their losses, 83 in their win, so they'll have to find a way to keep Nets under 90.

Dallas got whacked in Game 3 in Oakland, trailing 61-48 at half, losing 109-91; now Mavericks are on shaky ground, after being seemingly invincible during regular season. Dallas shot 48.7% fromf loor in their win, but 35.3/38.8% in their losses; they're 14 for 53 from arc in this series. Who would have thought this?

Rangers outshot Buffalo 33-18 in Game 2, but couldn't hold 2-1 third period lead, lost 63% of faceoffs, and let chance to seize home ice advantage slip away. There were 24 faceoffs in Sabre zone, 12 in Ranger zone, so NY carried action, but now Buffalo has four third period goals in series, as well as 2-0 series lead.

Vancouver won yet another low-scoring, OT game to even this series and grab home ice edge; Canucks had 40 shots on goal in regulation in Game 2, but are still struggling on power play; they're 0-12 in this series, 3-50 in playoffs. Under is 3-1-3 in the Ducks' playoff games this spring.

Columbus (4-3) @ Tampa Bay (1-6) -- Storm lost three of its four home games, losing by 25,14,7 points;only game they won was only one they held opponent under 52 points. Columbus is 3-1 in last four games (4-0 vs spread); they're 3-0 when they score more than 51 pts, 1-3 when they don't. This is just their second away game since Week 2; they're 1-2 on road this season.

Orlando (4-3) @ Las Vegas (1-7) -- Gladiators lost last six games, with five of the six by 10+ points; they're 0-3 at home, losing by 28,10,34 points, so not much of a home field edge. Orlando is 2-0 since its bye, allowing just 42 ppg; this is just their third game on road this year (1-1). Vegas hasn't had its bye yet; they also have yet to hold a team under 57 points.

Cardinals reliever killed in car crash
Sun, Apr 29, 2007 By Associated Press

ST. LOUIS -- Josh Hancock, a key member of the bullpen that helped the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series last season, was killed in a car crash early Sunday.

The Cardinals said they were told of the 29-year-old reliever's death by the St. Louis Police Department. The team's home game against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night was postponed.

The team said the accident happened in St. Louis, but no other details were disclosed. The Cardinals and police are expected to make a statement this afternoon at Busch Stadium.

Hancock has pitched for four major league clubs. He went 3-3 in 62 regular-season appearances for the Cardinals last season and pitched in three postseason games. He was 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA in eight games this season.

Hancock joined the Cardinals before the 2006 season. He has pitched for Boston, Philadelphia and Cincinnati.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Hot pitchers

Rich Hill (Chicago Cubs) - To be fair, the young Cubs' left-hander has been red-hot since the second half of last season - although his numbers since April 14 this season are pretty impressive. Hill has a miniscule 1.66 ERA since while giving up only two home runs in just over 21 innings pitched. If that's not enough, Hill has put up a .280 OBP against and 1.06 WHIP over that span for the Cubs, who are priced at -116 on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Matt Morris (San Francisco Giants) - It seems as though oddsmakers have made a mistake in pricing the Giants at +115 on the road today in Arizona. Even though Barry Zito and Matt Cain get all the press clippings for the San Fran starters, Morris has been quietly doing his part. Morris is undefeated so far this season, with a 2.79 ERA over his last three outings.

Scott Kazmir (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - The Devil Rays' ace is getting back on track after a tough start, and books have taken notice. Kazmir's recent starts have forced oddsmakers to make tonight's against the Oakland Athletics a close one with the A's at -109. The left-hander is averaging nearly a strikeout an inning while posting a 2.89 ERA over his last three starts.

                          Cold pitchers

Kip Wells (St. Louis Cardinals) - While Wells' 4.70 overall ERA is not exactly horrible, his ERA at home and over his last three trips to the hill certainly are. Wells is sporting a 6.11 ERA at the new Busch Stadium and an even worse 7.13 mark since April 14. It's no surprise that Wells hasn't made a dime for backers in that span, with his only win so far coming on the road. The Cardinals are priced at +105 at home tonight despite Wells' recent track record.

Woody Williams (Houston Astros) - The Astros are -106 home favorites today against the Milwaukee Brewers but Williams' recent string of defeats isn't encouraging. The former Padre seems to miss the pitcher's park in San Diego, because Williams is getting rocked as an Astro. Williams has yet to turn in a payday for Houston backers this season, having surrendered five dingers in his last three starts while putting up a shoddy 6.87 ERA.

                            Six-Pack for Sunday

-- Jeff Weaver gave up six runs on 29 pitches against the Royals Saturday night, as his ugly 2007 gets worse.

-- Gil Meche won that game, beating his old team in process.

-- Marlins have scored 49 runs in Willlis' six starts.

-- Miguel Tejada will play in his 1,105th consecutive game on Sunday, sixth on all-time list.

-- Orioles were awarded a run three innings after it scored Saturday, in bizarre sequence that saw Cleveland protest the game immediately; they actually might win protest.

-- Met announcer Gary Cohen needs to lay off the umpires; he called for Tony Randazzo to be sent to minor leagues on Saturday, after three of four close calls at first base went against the Mets. Randazzo has the plate today.
