HOT
Ramon Ortiz (Minnesota Twins) - Ortiz (3-1, 2.48 ERA) has been a wonderful surprise in the Twins rotation so far this season. Picked up on the cheap in the offseason, the veteran righty has gone at least seven innings in each of his four starts and has not allowed more than three runs in a game. He has been particularly efficient (averaging fewer than 13 pitches per inning) and hasn't reached 100 pitches yet in a start despite pitching late into games. He has earned backers 2.11 units and has the potential to increase his earnings as a +142 road dog today in Detroit.
Jason Marquis (Chicago Cubs) - Marquis takes the mound against his old club once again and would love to duplicate the success of his last outing, a 6-0 defeat of the Cardinals. Like Ortiz above, Marquis hasn't allowed more than three runs in any start this season but gives bettors an edge as a road underdog (+103). Including his time with the Atlanta Braves, he is 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA against St. Louis. He has dropped his ERA this season to a miniscule 1.88 entering tonight's matchup.
COLD
Anthony Reyes (St. Louis Cardinals) - The luster of his World Series start has worn off quickly for Reyes. He has compiled an 0-3 record this season thanks in no small part to the Cardinals' bats, receiving a grand total of three runs of support in his three starts. His pitch counts have approached 100 in each start despite pitching into the sixth inning only once. Reyes is 0-3 for his career against the Cubs.
Chuck James (Atlanta Braves) - James began the season with style, winning his first two starts while allowing only one run in 11 innings. But the young lefty has come back down to earth after losing his last two starts in which he allowed nine runs. James has not pitched more than six innings this season and he sports a 9.00 career ERA against the Rockies.
Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) - The other side of today's Coors Field matchup is also struggling, especially at home. Francis has allowed 13 runs and 22 hits in his past two home starts and the Colorado hitters have not been able to keep pass. His ERA has ballooned to 6.46 and he has walked 10 batters on the season. With cold pitchers on both sides of today's game and the thin Denver air thrown into the mix, an over play may be worth while. The 10 1/2-run total is tied for the highest on the board, but the over is 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings between these two teams in Colorado and 11-4-2 overall.
